COLWYN BAY DH \.TH.—We regret to note the death, after a short illness, of Mrs William Thomas, which occurred on* Fi 'day last, at her residence, Argyle 'House, 'Bay Vlew-road. The deceased lady was 54 years'< f age, and had lived in the town for upwards of i>0 years. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Llandrillo Church- yard, the ;R.pov Canoii Robert. aind the Rev F. Jones officiating. The chief mourners were Mr William Thomas (husoand), Miss Thomas, Miss Ethel Thomas, and Miss Emily Tnomas (dau'chc-ers), Mrs Roberts. Eglwysbach (sister), Mr W. Jones, Llangerniew (brother). Numer- ous floral tributes from friends and relatives were seint. Messrs Di,v les and Jones, Hope •Bank carried, out the funeral arrangements. ENGEDI AND RfllW LITERARY AND DEBATING SOCIETY.—The opening meeting of the session was held at Engedi Schoolroom on Monday, under the presidency of the pastor, the Rev Robert [Roberts. There was a very large attendance, the room being packed. Mr So Glyn-Jones, B.A., L.G.P., of the Higher Grade School, gave a lecture, the subject being A Drop of Water." Mr Glyn-Jones traced the, life history of a drop of water, which he illustrated by experiments with oxygen and hydrogen, and he touched briefly upon the power of water. The Chairman proposed, and Sir T. R. Williams seconded, a vote of thanks to Mr Glyn Jones, which was unanimously accorded, the felling of the meeting being that all present had spent a pleasant and profitable evening. CONCERT FOR. WAI'FS AND STRAYS— On Friday evening, n concert was held in St. Pa.ul's :Ciiurchroorii, in aid of the Church of England Incorporated Society for providing homes lor waifs and strays. There was a good attendance, and' an address on the work of the society, illustrated by limelignt views, was given by the Rev Philip !Re_es, L.D., clerical Oirganising secretary of the society. The follow- ing: programme of vocal and instrumental music was also gone through: —Part-songs, by the pupils of the Misses 'Everett; pianoforte solo, "Rainbow Sketches" tHo H.echle), by Miss Hechle; song, "Tatters" (Gerald Lake), by Miss Roberts; violin solo. "Pastourelle" (Elgar) by Miss Benson song, "The River of Years" (T. Marzials), by Mrs Ross; auto- harp, 'Harmonious Discords" (H. Hechle), by Miss Hechle; song, "Serenata" (Braga), with violin obligate. by Mrs Ross. Y.M.C.A.—.The Colwyn iBay branch of the Y.M.C.A., on Friday evening, held a mock Parliament in the rooms of the association, which was very successful from an en- tertaining and educational point of view, though ° the legislation resulting ifrianot the efforts, of the members was nil. It was also gratfying to find that in addition to the members, there were present a large number of non-members. The pro- ceedings were opened by the putting of ques- tions Iby the "Opposition." After question time three Bills were introduced—a Licensing Bill, a Motor Bill, and a Plural Voting Bill. A vigorous discussion ensued, in which many of the members distinguished themselves. The promoters of the Bills were beaten on a divi- sion of the House, and it was decided that the "Bills be read at a date siix months hence." SUNDAY SCHOOL MEETING—Under the auspices of the Colwyn Bay and District C.M. Sunday Schools, a meeting was held at .'Bethle- hem Cnapel, on Sunday, when a number of dele- gates from the various schools were in attend- ance. Mr William Hughes, Colwyn, was in the chair. A paper was read by Mr Morris Ellis, Pennant, on "The Sunday Schools as a means of grace." The subject was discussed by those present, and the 'Rev John Williams, of Holy- nead, took part in the discussion. The chil- dren were catechised by Mr J. O. Davies. The statistics affecting Bethlehem School were gone into, and it was found that there was a slight increase in the attendance on the previous year. It was also noted that, in regard to the at- tendance of teachers at Bethlehem, there had been practically no absentees during the year, which is a. fact upon which the school and the teachers are to be congratulated. ENGLISH BAPTIST 'CHURCH SOCIAL.— On 'October 24th, a musical and social evening was held in connection with the English Bap- tist Church, Colwvn Bay, when the choir ren- dered sever? 1 anthems in good style. (During the evening, Mrs 'Cousins, the wife of the pastor, on b-half of the Sunday School, pre- semted to Mr T. Brackstone an illuminated address, prepared bv Mr W. F. Booth, in re- cognition of his seri e as superintendent from the commencement of the church fiff-oen years ago. The Rev Dr H. T. Cousins, in supple- menting the rema.rl" of his wife, referred in eulogistic terms to t "e good and faithful ser- vice rendered by M-. Drackstone. and they all regretted tlat he w?s about to relinquish the work he ha-d dor: so well. The opportunity was also ta.ken to present to Mr A. H. Sum- mers, the org ;ist, t'vo volumes of music Mr Ernest Rowe, in making the presentation on behalf of the rfioir, referred to the high esteem in which Mr Summers was held bv e mem- bers of the choir, and Dr Cousins r1 > spoke of the effi- nt manner in which Mr Summers j performed his duties. MN WOMEN'S TElM'PEiRANCE UNION.—On ;i jMonday evening the opening meeting of the session in connection with the Colwyn Bay Branch of the -North Wales Womens' Temper- ance Union was held at Engedi. Prior to the meeting tea was provided in the schoolroom, to which all Welsh women in Colwyn Bay were invited, and aboub100 women responded to the invitation. Mr Griffiths, Llys Cynfelyn, occu- pied the chair at the evening meeting, when there was a good attendance to listen to Dr 1 Owen, of Llanrwst, who lectured on the subject < of temperance from a scientific point of view, and also from his own personal experience of the evil effeots of drink. The lecture was lis- tened to with rapt attention throughout, and was muoh appreciated. (Referring to the popular belief in the efficiency of brandy as a stimulant in cases of faintness, Dr Owen stated tihat recently he calJed at a house after a hard day's work with little or no food, and he felt j very ill and faint. The lady of the house, per- eeiving hilS condition, offered to get him some < brandy, but he said "No, if you have a cup ) of hot milk it will do me more good than brandy, as it will act as a. stimulant and will be nutritious also." He had the hot milk, and felt much better for it, and iDr Owen assured 1 those present that hot milk was the best pos- I Bible thing to give to anyone in a fainting condition through fatigue or lack of food.—'At the conclusion of the lecture Mrs T. M. Jones, president of the Union, proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Dr Owen. and put the claims of the branch before the meeting.—The Rev Ro- bert Roberta. Engedi, seconded, and the thanks of the meeting were accorded with enthusiasm. —It 18 interesting to note that. the Colwyn Bay ¡ branch of the North Wales Temperance Union has a membersip of 120, and is the only active j Welsh temperance society in the town. Mrs IPrvce Williams, Penrhvn-road, is the secretary and Miss Williams, Cartref, is the treasurer, Mrs T. M. Jones, wife of the Rev T. M. Jones, pastor of Bethlehem C.M. Church, being the president. WELSH BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL president. UNION.—The Abergele and district branch of the Welsh Baptist Sunday School Union held •j its annual meetings at Taibernacle Welsh Bap- J tist Chaipel, Colwyn Bay, on Tuesday evening and all day on Wednesday. The Rev P. Wil- j liams (tPedr Hir), Bootle, and the Rev E. K. Jones, Brymbo, delivered two powerful ser- I j mons oil Tuesday evening. Public meetings 4, were held on Wednesday, presided over by the Rev T. Roberts, Llanelian, and the Rev Peter Jbnee, pastor of Tabernacle Church. At the afternoon meeting two papers were read by Mr Samuel, B.Sc., Abergele County (School, on pi "The Means of Perfecting Teaching in Sun- ||S day Schools," and by the Rev E. K. Jones, jj.il Brymbo, on "The Organisation in the Sunday ij| School."
