Well, I am glad, real glad, to see you crying I "0 Donald!" cried Jean reproachfully. Then the old brown shawl slipped back from her head, leaving it bare and beautiful in the white moonlight. Donald replaced it tenderly, and his hand lingered for a moment caressingly. "This time to-morrow," he said presently, MI shall be miles away from you, lassie. Jean, promise me to look after the old folks. They'll miss me sore, I'm thinking, when I'm away." MI promise," said Jean. "I will go to see them every day, and get them to come up to the Manse to tea sometimes. We shall think and talk of you often," she went on, trying to be yery brave and cheerful. "It's a fine thing for you, Donald, that the laird and his lady took such a fancy to you. And now that he's made you his secretary, and Mrs. McGregor has fallen in love with your voice, there will be no end of your grand doings up in London." "It does a man good to travel, said Donald, flinging up his head and squaring his shoulders; for he was very hopeful and ambi tions. "Maybe you'll get too fine for us," said Jean, looking up at him wistfully. But Donald kissed the shadow from het face. "Now 1 must go," he said at last. "I have said good-bye to your father and mother, but I wanted to have a word with you down by our old gate." j He slapped his hand on its lichen-grown j top. "Do you remember that it was nere I kissed you first, Jean ? Yes, Jean remembered, though she only answered with a blush. So it was by the old garden gate that Donald gave her his farewell kiss. Jean clung to him, hiding her tear-wet face on his rough coat. "Dinna forget," she whispered. "0 Donald, dinna forget! I Jean Farquahson was the eldest daughter of the Presbyterian minister of Burnside. Though there was no settled engagement between her and Donald Dalgairn, who was the only son of the village sjlioolinaster, they "understood each other." as people said. He felt that there really was something much out of the common about him, and that he was destined to make his mark in the world. He was too good to degenerate into a mere pedagogue himself, whose sole object in life was making vulgar fractions, &c., penetrate certain little thick skulls. Then Mr. McGregor asked him to come up to the big house, and Mrs. McGregor once heard him sing, and was charmed with his Toiae. So the end of it was that Donald was to accompany them to London, and be Mr. I McGregor's secretary. What a brilliant prospect! One rather startling discovery he made, I soon after he got to London, was that the McGregors were not of nearly so much import- ance in town as they were at Burnside. They only fluttered round the outer edge of society, and if Mrs. McGregor could succeed in de- coying a titled personage to shed lustre on her small dinners and at homes," she was indeed delighted. At some of these select gatherings Donald played the part-not of a lion exactly, but more of a very young cub. There was one young lady-Lady Theresa Glenelwyn — who occasionally honoured Mrs. McGregor's "at homes. Donald thought she was the loveliest creature he had ever beheld. Decidedly she was very pretty, with a piquant kind of beauty, with red-gold hair and hand- some eyes, which she knew how to use. Donald was flattered by the kind friendli- ness with which she treated him. He did not know that she was the kind of girl who prides herself on the number of hearts she captures, as an Indian warrior prides himself upon the scalps at his belt. Once she actually invited him to a small dance. The invitation transported him into the seventh heaven with delight. It is to be feared that already "the old folks at hease," and even Jean, were rapidly slipping into the background of his memory. His new life had cast a glamour over him, though, so far, it had not really hurt him. "You must promise me to come," said Lady Theresa, looking at him sweetly then I will get my mother to send you a proper invita- tion. "It is very kind of you," said Donald, flush- ing with pleasure. "But, you know, I can't dance a step." "Never mind, "she said cheerfully. "No- body dances properly nowadays we only romp. So I shall consider you engaged for a waltz with me." He would not have felt so flattered by her persistence had he known it arose from a fear of a scarcity of dancing men-or, at least, men who were willing to dance. But, besides that, she really wanted an opportunity to make him fall desperately in love with her vain little self. Donald did not enjoy the Glenelwyns' dance so much as he had expected. He felt that he 'did not shew off to advantage beside the ultra- polished, free-and-easy men there. He couldn't move, or speak, or wear his clothes in the same way they did. He was conscious for the first time that he was travelling beyond his sphere. The only bright half-hour of the whole evening was when he and Lady Theresa sat oat a dance in the conservatory. How sweet she was I She gave him a flower she was wearing, and he was stooping to kiss her hand when suddenly Jean's face came before him. Dinna forget I And Jean's true eyes looked into his, 80 he pretended instead that he bad stooped to pick something up. Later in the evening he sought out Lady Theresa to say "good-bye," just before he left. He heard her voice in conversation with a young army officer, whom he had often noticed in close attendance upon her. They were sitting in the conservatory near where she and Donald had sat not long before. The mention of hia name arrested his attention, and he involun- tarily paused to listen. "He is really not bad for a Scotchman, Theresa was saying, in laughing protest. "Do you know, I imagined they were all sandy and freckled, and ate nothing but porridge t Of course he ia fearfully plebeian, and bores me dreadfully I No, Charlie, you really must not kiss me again Donald turned away with a smarting sense of hurt pride and indignation. That was all the friendship of these fine people was worth I Well, he had learnt his lesson. He was glad to get out of the stately West- end mansion, ablaze with electric light, into the streets. He panted for the smell of the heather again, for the free country life, for a sight of Jean's face. Ah, no one sneered at him at Burnside because he was poor and plebeian! The McGregors thought it was very ungrateful and disrespectful of him when the next day Donald said he wanted to go home. But he got his way at last. Mrs. McGregor said that was "the worst of taking up with that sort of people "-they were never properly thankful j and appreciative. Donald sent a letter to announce his return -a telegram would almost have frightened Burnside folk into fits, and given them a topic for conversation for weeks to come. Jean was down by the Manse gate, with the old brown shawl over her head, to watch for his coming. She wore a faded lilac print frock, which had seen much service. She thought fearfully how Donald would contrast her with his grand London friends. And so he did-and found her a thousand times better and sweeter than Lady Theresa in 8ins and diamonds. A private conference on the educational position in Wales met. on Friday mciming at the iWefetmmster Palace Hotel at the invitation of the Deputy CHiajicellors and Vice Oiiancellor of the University of Wales. There were pre- sent the Bishops of St. Asaph, St. David's, and Rancor, Lord Kenyon, Mr Laurence Brodrick, Sir John Williams, Archdeacon Edmonds, Mr Uoyd-Goarge, Mr F. Edwards, Mr T. John, Mr BJrynmor Jones, Mr H. Lewis, Mr R. M"Kenna, Mr C. iLJoyd (Waunivor), and Prin- cipal Rhys, besides Sir Isambard Owen, Senior Deputy Chancellor; iPrincdpal iGriffiths, Vice Chancellor; and Dr R. il). Sever- al of the animals have been returned to tiheir original ownene, and. others have been deposited in the Zoological Gardens in London and Atanr chester. The collection, which was formed by the late squire, ranked among the finest in the country, and included leopards, bears, puma-s, monkeys, and herds of wild boars presented by the King, and of wild Qhillingham cattle, a few of which have been retained. LLANDUDNO AND DISTRICT NOTES. "It is the most important letter that was ever read at this table." Such was the ex- pression of Councillor J. J. Marks, M.A., in seconding a vote of thanks, at Tuesdays meet- ing of the Urban Council, to Lord Mostyn for the intimatiion that his lordship proposed "in three months or so" to apply to the Chancery :Court for its sanction to a scheme enabling him to grant longer leases than for 99 years, and, also, to convert the present terminable leases into longer ones. Councillor Marks, undoubtedly, stTuck the true chord of public opinion, for I have, personally, verified the fact in representative circles during the day (Wednesday). Lord Mostyn's proposals come none too soon, for the vital interest of the town, and the estate, demands that drastic measures if Llandudno is to be properly de- veloped and to prosper. It is pleasing to note the fact that his lordship, who has never evinced much 6tubborness against the trend of local public opinion, has, at last, realised the gravity of the situation. I believe that the stumbling block in Lord Randolph Churchill's "Leaæhold Enfranchisement Bill" was the difficulty about arriving at the market value of ,the property. In that bill, if my memory serves mw correctly, it was proposed that it should be done by a jury at a County Court. Had that brilliant Parliamentarian lived, no doubt he would have devised some other more acceptable mode of arriving at the value. However, Lord Mostyn, through his agent's letter, has knocked the bottom out of the argument about the sac redness of contract, and, coming as it does from a member of the House of Lordø, it is all the more convincing. A great and important principle has been con- ceded. 'Llandudno in particular, and Wales in general, will owe a debt of gratitude to his lordship for even acknowledging such a prin- ciple. It is impossible to judge how far the proposed scheme will act beneficially in the interests of the leaseholders. I am creditably informed that the proposal is to grant all future leases for 999 years, as is the case on Lord Derby's estate. Tha.t, of course, would be tantamount to a freehold. Not much diffi- culty is anticipated in connection with new leases. Indeed, provided the terms are fair and equitable, they should give fresh impetus Jlnd a new lease of life to the town, and be the means of importing a. residential popula- tion, which, at present, find it more con- venient, and to their advantage, to settle at Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn, for the very sim- ple reason that they can not only obtain free- holds, but, also, because they are not fettered with troublesome building regulations and re- strictions. The difficulty, if any, will arise rwith regard to the conversion of the present terminable leases into longer ones. It is a delicate question, and will require much care and thought. But if the scheme is to be of any real value, the terms must be 6u:h as to be within the reach of the leaseholders. Re- ference to an important interview with Mr Richard Bellis (solicitor), elsewhere reported, will prove the importance of the point. For will prove the importance of the point. For instead of coming into its reward, the Mostyn Estate will only have deteriiorated and die- preciated property to take over. So that, really, it is as much, to the advantage of the ground landlord! as the lesees that the scheme should be conceived on equitable basis as re- gards terms. Until it is proved to the con- trary, I prefer to believe that Lord Mostyn's conditions will be such as to be acceptable by all leaseholders. The question is freely can- vassed what are the terms likely to be. Pos- sibly the leases will be renewed upon payment of the necessary legal costs for making the new deed, on condition that leaseholders pay a slightly increased ground rent annually. Or they may be subject to a renewable fine. The simplest way, to my mind, would be the adop- tion of Mr Bellis' suggestion, whereby a lease- holder should be asked to deposit a certain amount of money, which at the end of the (present lease, would by process of compound interest, Represent the value of the house, so that the ground landlord, instead of taking liold of the property will simply take over the accumulation of the capital. Of course, there may be objections even to that course. For the present, however, the matter must be left in the hands of Lord Moetyn and his advisers, in t'he hope that they will do what will be for the mutual interest and welfare of t,be,edate on the one hand, and the hard1 struggling lease- holders on the other. Meantime, Lord Mostyn may rest assured t.hat he has raised a hope in the hearts of his tenants, which, if realised, will redound to his credit and popularity. • • • I cannot help thinkinv that the Council has committed an error of judgment in deferring the work of extending Gloddaeth-street until the autumn, and also of cutting- the rock for the widening of the Happy Valley-road. The latter road is very narrow, and the vehicular traffie congested, and a serious accident may occur at any time during the season. T'he work could have 'been completed in six weeks, and before the season had actually 6et in. With, regard to the extension of Glodaaeth-street, I cannot, for the life of me, conceive how the making of a road would be an eye-sore to any visitor. As Councillor W. Henry Jones (Brynymor) very forcibly argued—indeed, it was Mr Jones only who used any argument in the whole discussion -the Green-lane at present is full of rubbish heaps, and I contend that those iheapev are far more of a nuiosanoe and an eye-sore than the making of a road could possibly be. I airree, however, with the postponement of the skewer works. For the sake of sentiment, for it is nothing more or less, the interest of the unem- ployed has been sacrificed' to the clamour of a few residents in North-parade. The deferment of the work, after the Works Committee, by the instructions of the Council, had advertised, and practically accepted, a tender, showed much weakness. The Llandudno Council is to be congratulated upon its success in having the Local Government Board to frame a. bye-law prohibiting stage coaches being on the stands to ply for liire before nine o'clock on Sunday mornings. Hitherto, the char-a-bancs have caused unne- cessary annoyance to residents and visitors in the neighbourhood of the pier through the con- duct of the drivers in competing at an early hour for the firist position on the stand. In the future, this will be obviated, and the jehus compelled to adopt a more rational course. • • • A communication was read from Mr G. A. Humphreys, at Tuesday's meeting of the local authority, stating that. Lord Mostyn was pre- pared to a.gree to similar terms as those upon which Gloddaeth and Trinity Streets are ex- tended, if the Council thought desirable to extend Mostyn-street, but to pay, in addition, £ 50 a year towards the interest on the capital outlay. The arrangement with Tegard to Glodd- aeth and Trinity Streets is tihat the Mostyn estate will recoup the capital expenditure to the Council as the land adjacent to those thorough- fares is being built upon. So that in the case of extending Mostyn-street, his lordship goes a step further, and agrees to pav A;50 a year to- wards the interest. It i6 an excellent offer. and in the absence of better terms, it is to be hoped that the Works Committee will recom- mend the Council to accept it. The residents and property-owners in the Craigydon district, the ratable value of -which, is over JB20,000, will closely watch future developments, and see whether the local authority will mete out equal justice and travelling facilities to all parts of the town. 'Certain members of the Council have always, and, to do them justice, conscientiously, ar- gued and voted against Sunday labour. But when it becomes a question of personal conven- ience, consistency counts for little. The Post- master-General is to be asked to have an early Sunday morning collection from the Gloddaeth- street Sub-post-office. Why Gloddaeth-street? If it is to be done at all, why not from every pdllar-box and sub-post-office in the town? It would mean more Sunday labour to the poor postman, and, I presume, without any extra renumeration. Personally, I do not object to the proposal, if it is made general, and the postmen paid for additional labour. Otherwise, I agree with Councillor Pieroo Jones. No man ha-c a rip-ht to call for gratuitous services on in order to sove a iournev to the (v r.eral Post-office on Saturday night.

MR. F. J. BBRRY. Mr F. J. Berry resides at Cyprus Villa, St. Mary's-road, Clacton-on-Sea, and (as wiU be gathered from this account) he is well known and highly respected. In a grateful letter, he expressed his willingness to give us the whole history of his remarkable case, and we there- fore sent our representative dqjvn to see him. We cannot do better, we think, than repeat Mr Berry's own frank, grateful worde Mr Berry's own frank, grateful words "Really, 'tis little short of a miracle that I I should be living to-day, after -what I have been through with dropsy and kidney disease," Air Berry began; "my doctor himself says as much. "To begin at the beginning: I've suffered on and off from backache, watery swellings, and other kidney symptoms for years past, but it wasn't until July of 1903 that it became serious. Then a heavy cold left me with a weakness in the back and' a depressing ache in the loins, and my limbs began to swell with water. I was soon so bad that I couldn't attend business. "I went on the club for a fortnight, and! the rest did me so much good that I thought myself well enough to commence work again. How- ever, I soon found out my mistake; ten or twelve days after, the pains in the back and loins returned far worse than ever before, and with alarming rapidity my body filled with water. "Of course I had to take to my bed, and the doctor was at once sent for; he gravely told me it was a serious case of dropsy and! kidney disease. He did all in his power for me—I'm sure of that—but I got worse and (worse every day. My back waa in eruch agony, day and night, that I didn't dare to move; I bad to be lifted from one position to another. "At this time I could pass scarcely any water. The doctor examined my urine, and found an enormous proportion of albumin. "The dropsical swellings grew worse and worse, until I BECAME TWICE MY USUAL SIZE. The weight of the swellings pressed me down so much that I could scarcely draw my breath. I suffered terribly from palpitation. "At the end of the 8th week, I was in such a serious condition that the doctor insisted on my being taken to the hospital. When the van came, they triOOJ to get this overcoat oa me to keep me warm." MATRIMONIAL WOE AT CARNARVON. A SINGULAR CASE. On Monday, at the Ctarharvon Borough Court, before Richard1 Thomas, Esq., and other magistrates, Mrs Mary Jones, of Pool- street, applied through Mr M. E. Nee for a .maintenance order against her husband. John Jones, living at Dinas Cottage, Llanwnda, and who was represented by Mr Richard Roberts. Mr Nee, in explaining the case to the Bench, stated that the complainant asked the Bench for a separation order, together with a reason- able sum towards her maintenance, under the Married Women's Act, 1895. The parties were married in June, 1903, but unfortunately they failed to live very happily together on account of domestic difficulties, and eventually they found themselves in court. In November, of the same year, they appeared before the Bench, andl the case was adjourned in order that Vhe defendant should provide a home for the compltainant. Later on, however, the matter was again brought before the magi- strates, and a separation order was drwn out on tihe 30th November, which stipulated that the complainant was to live apart from her husband, who was to contribute 5s per week ■towards her maintenance. Shortly afterwards the aefendbmt called at the complainant's house, asked her pardon, and craved that he be allowed to return to her and let by-gonea be by-gones. So they again lived together for a considerable period. About a fortnight before Christmas, however, matters were not so smooth, owing to the complainant eliciting the fact that the defendant had been paying debts incurred by his daughter, who lived at Dinas. Friction arose between the parties, the de- fendant stating when his wife accosted him in ¡ reference to the bill: "Ii you don't like it, I will leave," and off he went. I Soon afterwards, the defendant, went to con- sult Mr Carter, who on the 16th December, 1904, wrote to the complainant in the follow- ing teTmø: I "Madam.-—I have been consulted by your ¡ husband with reference Sto your conduct to Mm, parti cularly on the evening of last Wed- nesday, when you threatened to strike him with the poker and1 insisted upon his leaving your house. Rather than create a disturbance Mr Jones left without taking any cf his effects, and has been obliged to lodge with his daugh- ter at Dinas. As you are aware, this is not the first time unpleasantness has arisen be- tween you and your husband owing to your ¡ violent temper, and as you decline to live with him or allow him to Kve with you, he has no other course open but to reside apart from i you end we hereby give you notice that you I are not to contract any debts on Ms behalf, nor wiH he be liable to contribute to your maintenance.—Yours, Carter, Vincent and I. Co." Mr Nee had then replied to the -above com- munication as follows: — "Mrs Mary Jones, of Pool-street, has brought us your letter to her of the 16th inst., with instructions to Teply thereto. In the first place she denies having assaulted her husband, and while admitting that unpleasantnesses have been from time to time, she states that they havle not occurred through her temper or violence, but owing to the daughter—at Dinas-to whom your client has now gone to reside. The pretext given for the desertion will not avail him on the hearing of the sum- mons which we are instructed to take out un- less be returns to his wife or remits her with- out delay some reasonable amount for her maintenance.—Yours, etc., Nee and Gordon- Roberts." Mr Nee went on to say that the summons I was taken out, and in the morning of the court., the defendant came 11P to the complain- ant and said that he wanted1 to (settle the mat- ter amicably. He desired to have a try agree- ment drawn out by which he was to con- tribute 5s per week towards her maintenance and to live apart, and on that account the sum- mons was not proceeded: with. i The complainant gave corroborative evidence, and added that she had1 only received two sums of five shillings from the defendant since tiv- II agreement was drafted. The complainant then underwent a humor- ous, yet severe cross-examination at the hands of Mr Ricbard Roberts. The (Iefendant was her third husband. Mr Roberts Which of them was the best ? WitfMss Won't say (laughter). Mr Roberts: Three months after you got married, you drae-o-ed John Jones to the court? Witness: Yes; I had to bring him (renewed laughter). And you went arm in arm from the court?— No it was not so. i You say that the cause of the trouble was a certain bill. Whose was this bill?—iu was his daughter's bill. He paid her bills instead of his own. What was the row a.b&ut ?—About the bill. And it culminated in fetching the poker?— No, it did not. I had the poker in my hand. I knocked the table with it, and not his head (laughter). Mr Roberts then addressed the court, and said that the cause of the whole friction was said that the cause of the whole friction was that the complainant threatened the defendant Ii with the poker. He would consent to a small sum in order to put a stop to the continual domestic trouble. The defendant, went into the box a.nd re- ¡. lated a. series of adventures he had had with the complainant.
