OHOR'AIL.—Notwithstanding the inclement weather which prevailed on Monday, the annual festival of the Vale of Conway Choral Associa- tion. which was held at 'St. Mary's Church, was largely attended, and proved a great- success. Choirs from •Llandudno, Bettwsycoed, Blaenau •Fesbiniog, Gapel 'Curiij, Tanygrisiau. Dolwydd- e.ion, Peiima-chno. and Catrhun, took part, and the sinking on the whole Was of high merit. Mr John Williams, organist, of Carnarvon, wielded the baton, while Mr R. Walker Davies, of Fes- tiniog, presided at the organ. The Rev D. W. Davies, rector of Llaiiigernyw. delivered a dis- ccurse at the evening meeting.

BRYNCROES, I LEYN. FOUND DEAD.—On Suniday evening. Mr W. Jones, "Yr Aiphjt," Bryncroes, wcn/t to 'bed in his usual health, but the following morn- ing, he was found dead. Ait the inquest, the jury returned a veTdiotolf "Accidenita.1 dlewth." The deceased had received internal injuries and in- juries to the head, owing to having fallen from a ear, the wheel of which paissed over the body.

CARNARVON. THE MILITIA. — Arrangements have been made for the recruits of the Carnarvon Militia to journey to Wrexham on the day of tfie Royal vi-it. in order to line the route and preserve order in the town. POLICE PROMOTION.-We understand that P.C. Legge paid his annual visit to Carnarvon, and inspected the police and the station. Superintendent Griffith presented nine teen men for inspection, and Captain Legge •etnu'dt pleased with their, smart appearance and their drill. He was also satisned with the general appearance of the police station and the »e itness of the arrangements. DEATH OF AN OLD INHABITANT —The death took place at his residence in Newboiough- street, on Monday, of Mr John Roberts, aged 83 years. He was one of the oldest inhabitants of the town, and for many years had been the head- gardener at Coedhelen. The deceased was well- known and highly respected. He was a member of the church at Moriah. The funeral, a public one for men. took place on Thursday, the re- mains being interred at Llanbeblig. A SAILOR DROWNED.—'Richard Morgan, sailor, the husband of Mrs Mary Morgan, 12, Chapel-street, was drowned at 'Cardigan on Tuesday week. Morgan was one of the crew of 'the Carnarvon vessel "-Mies Hunt" (Capt. Owen Owen), having joined at Dover on the 14th of April. The "Miss Hunt" arrived at Cardigan on the 28th ult., and Morgan and the mate went ashore in the evening. In returninfj^bout 11 p.m.. the mate heard a splash in the water and Morgan calCing for help. IHe went down on the fender, and Morgan got hold of his leg, and wa,s hanging on to it. The. captain heard the shouting, and jumped up on deck, when the mate told him that Morgan was drowned. Search was made for the body which was found -on the following Friday. lAn inquest was held on Saturday, and: a verdict of "Accidental drowning" returned. Deceased was buried on Saturday at Cardigan. Morgan was a native of Aberystwyth, and previous to joining the "Miss 'Hunt.' had been one of the crew of the ^'Eacle of Wir,stable. THE LATE MRS MAURICE JONES.-The funeral took place on Monday, at Caeathraw, of Mrs S. Maurice Jones, whose demise we briefly mentioned last week. IShe was verv popular in ,tli,Lx town, and in her early days had taken a deep and active interest) in political matters, the services she rendered the Liberal party dn con- nection with the celebrated J«ws-Parry election being still gratefully remembered. She also took a leading part in connection with the ragged school, and was ceaseless in her attention and service thereat. THE FAMOUS OLD LACE- that has been preserved through- the ages in connection with Conway Parish Church, is now on view in the Parish-room, in specially-constructed cases. There is some difference of opinion as t:J the origin of these beautiful specimens of Church lace, some authorities say ins tliev are the work of nuns from the Abbey of Aberconwv, atnd others saying they are specimens of Spanish lace of the 16th century. Tt is inrrmised that they were taken care' of by some of the Conway families during the rebellion, there being evi- dences of this in the way they have been pre- served. It is through the generosity of Miss Hadley, Gorphwysfa, that they are now en- cased in proper receptacles, she having defrayed the expense of getting air-tight cas^s specially made for the purpose of preserving and properly displaying them.

DOLGELLEY. THEFT BY A GIPSY.—On Saturday, before E. Griffith, Esq., and R. Williams, Esq., a travelling gipsy named Prudence Jones, 19 years of age, was brought up in custody charged with having stolen two steel and one silver watch' chains from, the shop of Mr James Mills, watch- maker. The Chairman, in pa's'sing1 a sentence of six week's imprisonment with hard labour, said that but for her youth she would1 have been sent to prison for a longer period. It had been re- ported to the police that the prisoner and her I companions lhad 'been going aboait annoying people by offering to tell their fortunes, and he hoped this would be a warning to them. They were in a car, when the horse took fright and bolted at a smart pace down High-street. The occupants were thrown out of the car, but, fortunately, no bones were broken. LLANDUDNO. FIRE.—Some excitement was caused about half-past- seven o'clock on Tuesday night by the discovery that a joiner's shop in John-street, occupied by Mr Henry Hughes, was on fire. The premises are immediately to tne rear of a large block of buildings at the lower end of Mostyn- stTeet. In a few minutes the fire brigade ar- rived., and fortunately were able to subdue the outbreak after a free use of water. Fortunately, ■not much damage was caused.

DOLGEL.LEY URBAN COUNCIL. Dr John Jones presided at an adjourned meet- ing of the Council on Tuesday evening.)1r Richard: Richards inquired how the moneys re- ceived by the trustees of the Marian had been expended.—The Marian, or the public recreation ground, had been bequeathed for the benefit of the town and more especially for the poor of the town. The rent ranged from B50 to JB40 an- nually, but as far as he remembered no balance- sheet was ever supplied to the Council.—-It. was resolved that the Council, through their -hair- man, should ask the trustees for particulars.— The agreement between the Council and. the County Council in respect of the main- tenance of main roads within' the district (the County Council undertaking to pay £240 annually for the next three years) wa.s signed by the chairman.

CARNARVON SCHOOL BOARD. MONDAY.—Present The Mayor (M;r W. G. Thomas) presiding, Revs Owen Williams, Father Jones, and David Hughes', and Mr R. Gwyn- eddon Davies. NO. INCREASE. OF SALARY. —An applica- tion had been received from teachers asking the Board for an increase of salary. It was stated that their salaries were rather low as compared with the salaries paid in other schools in the neighbourhood.!—The 'Finance Committee re- commended that no change be made at present owing to the fact that the Board wonldi expire in three months, and that they did not feel justified in revising the scale at the present. time.—The recommendation of the committee- was adopted. THE DROWNING FATALITY IN PORTMADOC. THE 'INQUEST. On Tuesday, at the Ship aind' Oastele. before Dr Humter Huighes (coroner), an inquest was held touching the death of the late Mr Richard Jones, 49. Mw-do'C-street, master of the ship, "'Glatnotgw'.n," who was drowned on Satuixlay ■evening. Captain R. Lloyd aoted as the fore- man of the jury. Rioliland Williams, Minffordd, nepliew of the. deceased, testified1 that deoea'sed WVKS 46 years Of age, and master of the ship "Glanogwen." Witness saw him after nine o'clock at his house, in his usual health. He left the house and Went to the ship tio Pencei. He was quite sober. De- cea.sed was not a strong man. and' witness did not believe that he could swim. W. G. Jones, 2. Corn Hill, Portmadoc, and mate of the same, ship, .gave evidence to tho effect tha;t he was with the deceased after eleven ■o'clock, and Went with him; to move the vessel. The first of May falling this year on Friday, and it being somewhat inconvenient for trades- men to patronise the usual annual celebrations in honour of the advent of the "merry month on that date, it was decided, after full eonsideTa- tion. to hold the. event on Tuesday. The- weather was fine and warm. in fact. the day was an ideal day for a pageant. of the kind. The com- mit-tees had been working hard to secure sue- oess, and their labours were amply rewarded. The procession was not of such great dimen- sions as some of its predecessors, but in quality it was superior in many respects. The cabmen for .some reason withheld their support from the committee. The Urban Council had decorated the promenade with streamers flying from Venetian poles. The streets looked gay with bunting, M.ostyn-street, tradesmen, in particular, playing a very prominent part in this respect. The St. George's, the Imperial, the Marine, and the Royal Hotiels looked at their best. and the managements deserve every credit for the very practical manner in which thev added to the gaiety -of the day. THE PROCESSION. The procession left the General Post Office shortly after one o'clock, and proceeded down Mostyn-street, Vaughan-screet, Miostyn-crescent. Clarence-street, Mostyn-avenue, Nantygamar- road, and back along the promenade to Church- w-alks, along Tudno-street to Abbey-road, down York-road to Gloddaeth-street, where all the exhibits resumed their original positions for the purpose of judging. As already stated, the dimensions of the procession were not so great. but in the variety and quality of the exhibits, it was altogether an excellent show. Not the least interesting figure in the procession was Mr Robert Foulkes, who is 97 years of age, and probably the oldest gentleman in the district. Air Foulkes- has lived to see five coronation festi- vities, and has recently emerged successfully from a lawsuit with the Chancery Authorities. He was riding in a small dog cart, drawn by '"Tommy," a ihors-e belonging fto Councillor David Gario Robert's. It is claimed that "Tommy'' is the oldest horse in North Wales. Mr Foulkes was saluted along the route, and 6eemed to enjoy and appreciate the honour which the committee had conferred' upon him. The Llandudno Fire Brigade was the only brigade that entered in the class confined to such turn- outs. It was under the command of Captain J. Owen, and was neat and clean in appearance. Messrs H. and- J. Owen, Gloddaeth-street, pre- sented the best exhibition in the class confined to grocers and confectioners. It was fully loaded with the qhoisest of goods, and its design ex- cellenit. The same firm carried the premiler honours among "the trade'' lot. 'Mr John Hughes, fishmonger, secured a couple of prizes with his smart, turn-ou ;s in the classes confined to butchere, poulterers, and fishmongers. Mr Edward Owen, contractor, fully deserved the first prize among the carters, corn merchants, and furniture removers. The horses were good, and the design unique. In the class for the neatest landaus, the exhibits of the Llandudno Coaching Company, Mr Wheeler, Messrs Wood- yatt, and Jarvis, who supplied, practically, all the show in this respect, were a credit to Llan- dudno, and the floral ly-decora ted landaus shown by the latter firm were really spfendid. Messrs H. and J. Owen and Messrs Woodyatt and Jarvis each won a special prize, the former being given the preference. The members of the two local Rechabite itents also took part in the I procession. Immediately following thp procession, the crowning of the Queen of May and the u"u;il dances took placp at the Pier Pavilion. The huge building was packed, and there must have been over 4000 people present. A number of young ladies a.nd gentlemen had been busi'v engaged during the morning in decorating the stage and its environments with lilacs, ever- greens, s'hrubs. etc.. kindly supplied bv Col. the Hon. Too much praise cannot be paid to the Misses Roberts, Huyton Miss Eftie Cooper, and Miss Marehant for the very effi- cient manner they had trained the children for their respective duties, and when it is stated that they numbered about 80. the greatness of the work can be understood and appreciated. They carried out their difficult task in a quiet and unassuming manner. and that unaided by professional talent. Mis-s Burrow, of Hifod. was the young lady who was to be crowned the ■Queen of May. Her dress had been made b.v Miss Beaumont, of Ambleside. It was Grecian in style, made of Oriental white satin, trimmed with silver gauze and braid. The train was four and three-quarter yards long. a.nd the flowers were white U:ac and marguerite daisies. Among the presentations to her was a beautiful basket of roses of the richest bloom from the committee. The procession came in through the far dooT. and walked up to vh-e "crowning arena" in a most majestic fashion, and amidst the cheers of the audience. The marshals (E. Bellis and P. Hornsby) were fol- lowed by F. Roberts. J. Haworth. as heralds M. Richmond, the jester; and W. Lester. the Crown bearer. Then came the May Queen (Miss Jeannie (Burrow), with R.. Burrow and F. Even in this respect the Ladies' Committee are to be congratulated upon an invention which others would do well to emulate in years to come. The dances repre- sented six well-known operas. All,the items were encored. We will dispense with anv at- tempt at describing the dresses, which were all lovely and in true keeping with the dances re- presented. The quintette. "All after Potts" (The Messenger Boy), by Mabel and Nellie Mar- getts. Julia' Hornsby, Jessie Haworth, and Harry Roberts, was excellently performed. The "Dutch Dance'' by Pollie Underwood and Al- bert Cooper was amusing and good. Daisy Phillips and "Violet Evans. 'Harriett Williams and Lily Lucking. Mabel and Nellie Ma.rgett-s, and Daisy Phillips and Harry Roberts, gave duet dances in a very creditable manner from the "JklJe of New York," "San Toy," "Run- away Girl," and the "Circus Girl;" while Glad- ys Timms and Julia Hornsby and Nellie Holli- da,y and Jessie Brown gave a couple equally well from the "Toreador. In the evening, at the Prince's Theatre, the Llandudno Amateur Dramatic Society played "My Friend the Prince." Mr Arthur Conway admirably impersonated Jannaway. the million- aire gardener. The parts of Jannaway's daugh- ters, Poppy and Pansy, were played by Miss Fan Sumner and Miss Laura Haworth. who fitted the parts in every respect admirably. Mr Arthur Dunphy as "Ambrose Pinning," a young barrister, was very successful, as also was Mr George Chase as "Pink," the son of Jannaway. Mr Harry Haworth took the part of "the footman." and Mr E. H. Powell that of "the Hon. Pet-o Godolphin." both playing ex- ceedingly well. Mr C. A. Button was most I successful as "Prince Maurice." and Mrs C. A. iHutton cleverly impersonated Gilberte Pi- card." Miss Porte, a new member of the so- ciety. played the irort of "Princess Brunchilde" capitally." The other parts^were played as fol- lows — "(Prince's Chancellor." Mr Albert J. Jester; "Bennet," Miss A. E. Da.vies. The I performance as a whole gave great delight to the spectators, and they marked their approval by frequent outbursts of applause. Miss Hughes. Bewsey House, gave piano selections between the acts, and the stage management was carried out by Mr C. A. Hutton. Mr A. J. S. Mer- chant is the hon. secretary of the society, and Mr Harry Parker the hon- treasurer. During the second interval, Mr Hutton appeared be- fore the curtain, and thanked the audience for I their presence. He added that during the last two years the society had given eleven perform- ances. not reckoning that night's, and the gross takings had been about JB600. Of this amount. about J3550 had been given to charities or other institutions for the benefit of the town, and of the remainder which had gone in expends. £ >ZaU had been spent in the town of Llandudno, on y things which could not be obtained in toe town being sent for from elsewhere.. On Wednesday night, tfie performance was repeated for the benefit- of the society, in ac- cordance with Mr Hutton s announcement, and there was again a large audience. It should be added that the piece was excellently mounted, and the costumes were appropriate in every detail.

Lord Windsor, head of the Government Office of Works and Lord- Lieutenant of Cxi amor pari, was there to respond for the Houee of Lords. Sir Alfred Thomas, the chairman of the- Welsh Liberal Parliamen- tary party, proposed the toast of the evening, that of "'The Newspaper Society." and-delivered an interesting speech on the enterprise of the American pres»s 'Sir Joseph Lawrence, in a humorous speech, and in a perfectly impartial spirit, proposed the toast of "His 'MajestrvV m response to which Mr Austen Chamberiam delivered an eminently practice 1 erpeech dealing with the relations -of the Posrt- office .o the public press. Mr William Evans, of tiie 'Board of Trade, and formerly of Carnar- von. was also present. Welsh music wa.s not forgotten, for amongst- the artistes was Mr Hit-% wen Joue«.
