The members of the Aberdaron Congrega- tional Church, near Pwllheli, at the ordina- tion services of the Rev John Jones, of Bala- Bangor College, presented the Rev Councillor William Williams, of Pwllcrwn, with a testi- monial in recognition of his valuable services to the church when it was without a resident pastor.

A writer in the "New Ireland Review" for this month propounds a theory which will make the bards and their followers stare and gasp. It is none other than that the Welsh National Eisteddfod is of Irish origin! And all this after the Eisteddfod has been iously patronising the resuscitated Feis Ceou of Ireland!

A correspondent states that as there will be no Summer School of Theology this year at Mansfield College, Oxford, it has been decided to hold a similar "school at Llan- drindod, and that arrangements are being made for a series of lectures by. a number of specialists representing the "four denomina- tions" and the Established Church.

Mr George Farren, Trefenai, High-sheriff of Carnarvonshire, has appointed Mr H. Lloyd Carter (of the firm of Carter, Mostyn Roberts, Vincent, and Co.) to be under-sheriff Oar older Carnarvon headers will be interest- ed to know that exactly 60 years ago—in t, !1838-Mr Lloyd Carter's grandfather, Mr Lloyd Roberts, occupied the same office.

The huge building known as St. David's College, Mold, regarding which there is a proposal to convert it into an asylum for Welsh pauper lunatics, has had a curious history. It was built as the county gaol, but not being afterwards required, the county sustained a loss with loan and interest of £ 40,000. The Jesuits next occupied the building as a college, purchasing it for sever- al thousands. 0

The competition for the Llewelyn Thomas Prize took place on Monday at the Royal Academy of Music. The examiners were Messrs Lloyd Chandos and Iver M'Kay and Madame Medora Bensrm, and the prize was awarded to Gertrude Drinkwater (a native of Cardiff). The examiners highly commended Margaret Drysdale, and commended Laura Eagland.

•Despatches fro mSir William Lockhart in the "Gazette of India" speaks in the highest terms of the services of Captain Ivor Philipps, of the 5th Gourkhas, attached to General Palmer's staff in the memorable attack at Dargai. Captain Philipps, who led the at- tack, hails from Pembrokeshire, and is a 'brother of Mr Wynford Philipps, the re- cently-elected member of Parliament for that county.

Lady Cunliffe, wife of Sir Robert Alfred Cmnliffe, Bart., of Acton Park, Wrexham, died rather suddenly on Sunday morning at the family residence- The funeral took pLace on Thursday, the place of interment being the Borough Cemetery, Wrexham. Preced- ing the coffin, which was borne on a low car- riage, were the Bishop of St. Asaph, Canon Fletch-er (vicar of Wrexham), Dr Richard Williams (the family doctor), and the tenantry of the estate. The bishop and the vicar con- ducied the service.

SALE OF AN ANGLESEY ESTATE.- The Llwynonn estate in Anglesey, the pro- perty of the late Colonel Robert Williams, has been purchased; by the Marquis of An- glesey- THE ANGLESEY HUNT-—At a meeting of the members of the Anglesey Hunt, held on Saturday, at Beaumaris, it was arranged that the Point to Point races should take place on Saturday, Mr J. Rice Roberts, master of the Anglesey Harriers, consenting to act as judge, and Mr G. Pritchard Rayner as honorary secretary. Three events were arranged, the honorary secretary giving a challenge cup for hunters. THE MISSING PENMAENMAWR COL- LECTOR. — Information has reached pem.- maenmawr that J. Davies, the late rate-col- lector, against whom a warrant for embezzle- ment and falsification of accounts had been issued by the Conway magistrates, and who absconded before its execution, had died in an hospital in, South Africa. His disappear- ance, it will be remembered, was the subject of an inquiry by the Carnarvonshire Police Committee, which resulted in the lowering of rank of one superior official. MINISTERS IN CONFERENCE.-On Monday afternoon, the Monthly Meeting of the Congregational ministers of the Vale of Conway and North Arvon was held at Llan- dudno Junction, under the presidency of the Rev W. Keinion Thomas (Llanfag- fechan). On the motion of the —' Evans (Henryd), seconded by the Rev R. ¡ P. Williams (Llandudno), a letter was voted commending the Rev W. Mason, of Llanbedr, to the fellowship of the Welsh churches in the United States of America.—Mr Mason said he intended leaving this country on the 9th of April.—On the motion of the Rev C. Williams (Penmaenmawr), seconded by the Rev J. Evans (Colwyn Bay), a resolution con- gratulating the Rev W. Evans-Jones (Pen- llyn), of Old Colwyn, on his success in winning the bardic chair at the North Wales Pro- vincial Eisteddfod, was unanimously passed. -The Rev R. P. Williams (Llandudno) pro- posed, and the Rev W. Evans-Jones (Col- wyn), seconded a resolution supporting Mr Perks's bill respecting the registration of r marriages. WREXHAM, MOLD, AND CONNAH'S QUAY RAILWAY. -In the Chancery Divi- sion of the High Court of Justice, on Tues- day, Mr Justice Stirling gave judgment in this case, in doing which his lordship said that it was an action brought by Mr Whit- ham, Mr Bernard, and Mr Piercy, who were holders of ordinary stock in the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway Company, to compel the three defendants, Sir Edward Watkin, Sir John Maclure, and Mr William Pollitt, to repay the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Railway Company certain funds which they, along with other direcotrs of that company, applied to the purchase of certain shares in the Wrexham, Mold, and Connah's Quay Railway Company. The action aroso out of an action which took place as far back as 1890. On the 15th of April of that year the plaintiffs, together with Mr Henry Egerton Piercy, now dead, being then the legal personal representatives of Mr Benjamin Piercy entered into a contract with the Railway and General Company for the sale to them of 9343,903 consolidated stock in the Wrexham, Mold, and Connah's Quay Railway at 18f per cent., and the Railways 4 and General Company also agreed to pur- chase at the same price all the ordinary stock of the Wrexham Company which might at any time thereafter he found coming to the plantiff and to Mr Piercy in respect of cer- tain agreements with the 1 company. Al- though on the face of it the Railways and General Company were the purchasers, it was provided, as between the company and the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincolnshire Rail- way Company, and transferred to the trus- tees in the case, and this was done to ac- quire a controlling power over the Wrexham Company. His lordship, after reviewing the whole of the circumstances, found that what the defendants had done was done as direc- tors, and for the benefit of the shareholders in the Manchester, Sheffield, and Lincoln- shire Railway Company, and not for their own personal benefit. He, therefore dis- missed the action, and saw no reason why costs should not follow the event.

ABER. PARISH MEETING.-A parish meeting was held on Saturday, under the presidency of Mr J. W. Jones, Tanygraig. Only seven nomination papers for the parish council were handed in to the chairman, viz., those of three Churchmen, two Calvinistic Meth- odists, and two Wesleyans. This was in con- sequence of an) understanding which had been previously arrived at.—The retiring members were invited to give a report of their doings during the past year. This was done by Mr W. O. Jones. The council had been alive to the interests of the inhabit- ants, especially in tho matters of public pathways, the cemetery, postal conveniences, &c. The council had already secured a money order and savings bank office for the parish, and intend obtaining further conven- iences in the near future. Having listened to the report, the Chairman declared the following elected members of the council for the ensuing year: -Messrs W. 0. Jones, W. Roberts, R. Morris, O. Hughes, E. W. Ro- berts, J. Jones, and N. Morris.

AMLWCH. SCHOOL BOARD.-on Wednesday night, the vacancy caused; by the death of Mr O. Roberts, chemist, was filled up by the elec- tion of Mr O. E. J ones, J.P., Tjy'nrheol. PARISH COUNCIL.—The annual parish meetings for the election of parish councillors were held on Saturday night. In the Town Ward, the meeting was presided over by the Rev O. Hughes. The following persons, all Liberals, were elected:—Messrs J. Brindle, E. J. Evans, W. R. Hughes, W. Lewis, Rich- ard Williams, and R. Pierce Williams. The defeated Conservative nominees were Messrs T- 1". unctson, w. Jones, JrC. lij. Hoberts, W. Roberts, and G. H. Williams. The ward is represented in the expiring council by five Liberals and one Conservative.—In the Port Ward, Mr S. Hughes, Bodednyfed, presided. The Rev T. Evans (L.), Mr Josiah Griffiths (C.), Mr O. Hughes (L.), Captain W. Ro- berts. (C.), and Captain L. Thomas (C.), were re-elected, there being no other candidates J nominated.—In the North-West Ward, Mr J. Hughes, Frondeg, presided. The follow- ing persons were elected:—Messrs J. Jones (L.), W. Thomas (L.), T. P. Williamson (C.), and T. Williams (C.). Here, Mr T. P. Wil- liamson (C.) takes the place of Mr J. Wil- liams (L.). The new council will be com- posed of ,ten Liberals and five Conservatives. The patty representation is unchanged.

BANGOR. THE CROWN CAFE.—The work of alter- ing this place has been entrusted to Mr Wa.t- kin Jones, contractor, Bangor, and will cost £ 800. ORGAN RECITAL.—On Monday evening, an organ recital was given by Mr T. West- lake-Morgan, the cathedral organist, Mr Charles James being the vocalist. JAPAN. —On. Wednesday evening, Mr W. Howard Lewis gave a lecture, at the Glanadda Wesleyan Chapel, on "Japan." The chair was occupied by Mr W. Lloyd Jones, and the lecture, which was greatly ap- preciated, was illustrated with magic lantern slides. LECTURE.—On Friday evening, the Rev H. Elvet Lewis, Llanelly, delivered a lec- ture, entitled, "Flowering the edge of fail- ure," under the auspices of the Students' Welsh National Union, at Tabernacle Chapel. The chair was occupied by Professor W. Lewis Jones. THE PORT PENRHYN SLATE WORKS. -In consequence of the breakdown of the engines, these works have been temporarily closed. We understand that Messrs Dixon and Co. have bought the premises, and in- tend transferring their present works to Port Penrhyn, where new buildings will be erected, new engines put up, and the works consMer- ably enlarged. THE ANTIQUARIAN DISCOVERIES.— As the work on the Friars estate is proceed- ed with, new discoveries are made almost daily by Mr P. S. Gregory, the architect in charge of the work. On Monday, a. beauti- fully-oarvad slab( was unearthed, together Jwith a number of coins. On Thursday, a find of more than ordinary interest was made, consisting of three skeletons, lying side by Slde in the bare earth. SPECIAL POLICE COURT.—On Mon- day, before J. E. Roberts, Esq., at the bor- ough magistrates' court, Joseph Williams, anfairfechan, was charged with stealing a number of fowls. He was remanded until Thursday- -William Edwards, a vagrant, for being drunk and incapable, was committed to prison for seven days, and John Mande-. man, a negro, was sent to prison for fourteen keeping out. ARMENIAN FUND. — A concert was held at the Penrhfm Hall, on Tuesday evening, in aid of the funds which are being raised m Bangor for the rearing of twenty Armenian orphans. A branch of the Friends øf Armenia has been started at Bangor, and angements hare been made to provide per annum for the purpose of bringing up these orphans. BARMOUTH URBAN DISTRICT COUNCIL. — A special meeting of this council was held on Thursday afternoon. Captain E. Richards occupied the chair Several applications were received[forthe> post of rate collector. It was resolved that the appointment should be deferred till the next ordinary meeting. The Surveyor stated that Mr D. Williams had erected bmlding3 m Park road in contra- vention of the bye-laws, and in spite of the disappr°va^. plans by the works com- mittee. It was agreed that the surveyor should send a formal notice to Mr D. Wil- liams, stating that he was contravening the bye-laws, and that the matter should come before the next meeting of the council. A letter was read from Major Corder with re- gard to the sea wall. It was resolved that the letter should be submitted to the works committee, and that they should report upon it bv the next ordinary meetmg. THE ATTRACTIONS OF BARMOUTH. -A representative meeting of the residents of Barmouth was held on Thursday, at St. Ann's Buildings, to meet Mr Denniss, mana- ger of the Cambrian Railway Company, for a discussion as to the best way of bringing the attractions of Barmouth, both as a winter and summer resort, before a larger circle of the general public. Dr H. J. Lloyd pre- sided.-The Rev E. Hughes (rector) said there were medical practitioners of the front rank prepared to express their appreciation of Barmouth. They had frequently members of the Gladstone family wtih them, and they knew the high opinion of Ruskin with re- gard to Barmouth. Poets of the first rank, with a keen eye to the beautiful, had sung in glowing terms the praises of the district. A notable instance was that of Lord Tennyson, the late Poet Laureate. His son stated that sections of the "In Memoriam" were sug- gested and written at Barmouth.—It was re- solved that a committee should be formed to carry out the recommendations of the meeting.

BEAUMARIS. MILITIA.—The recruits of the Anglesey Rayal Engineer Militia, which is under the eommand of Colonel Sir R. H. Williams- Bulkelev, Bart. assembled for eight weeks' preliminary training on Monday lasit—in num- ber about 100. The officers present are Capt. Cecil Per\ adjutant; Lieuts. Sir T. LL H. Neave, Bart., Arundel Neave, and Second- Lieut. 1.. H. G. Lloyd. POLICE COURTS.—On Tuesday, before Sir R. H. Williams-Bulkeley and James H. Burton, Esq., P.-Sergeant Owen Jones charged Thomas King and Charles Garfield with being drunk and refusing to quit the Old Prince of Wales, on the 14th inst. De- fendants admitted the offence. Fined 2s 6d and costs.—The same officer also charged David Devine with being drunk in School- street, on the same day, and he was fined 7s 6d and costs. This gentleman was evi- dently filled with a such a strong sense of gratitude for being let off so leniently that immediately on leaving court he seems to have celebrated the event, not wisely but too well, for the police had to take him into safe custody again later on in the day for being drunk and disorderly in the same street. He was charged with the offence on Wednesday, before James H. Burton, Esq., and Sir Thomas Neave, Bart. This time, David was sent to meditate on his misdeedS for 14 days.

BETHESDA. THE NEW YICAR OF GLANOGWEN. -Lord Penrhyn has offered the above im- portant parish to the Rev R. Thomas Jones, B.A., vicar of Nevin, by whom it has been accepted. The new vicar was educated at St. David's College, Lampeter, of which he was z;1 senior scholar and prizeman. He was or- dained in 1885 to the curacy of Pwllheli, under Canon Jones, M.A., the present rector of Llandegai, Bangor, whose neighbour he will be in his future sphere. In 1888, Mr Jones was appointed to the vicarage of Nevin, where he has since laboured most ener- getically and successfully in every branch of Church work, and is much beloved by all in that district of Carnarvonshire. He is an eloquent preacher in both languages, and his voice has often been raised in the locality in defence of the Established Church. He is also a member of the school board of his parish.

CARNARVON. MUSICAL.—Mr Seth Hughes, pupil of Mr John Williams, organist of Christ Church, has been appointed lay clerk (tenor) at Bangor Cathedral. THE LIBERAL CLUB.-Out of the eighteen candidates, Mr Thomas Ellis, Yie- I toria-street, Carnarvon, was appointed cii,, todian of the Liberal Club in the room of Mr Eardley, who is removing to Bangor. NAUTICAL SUCCESS.—Mr Henry Lloyd, son of Captain Henry Lloyd, Garnon-street, successfully passed his examination in Liverpool, last week, and obtained a first mate's certificate, under the new regulations. WELSH LITERATURE.-This was the subject of an interesting lecture delivered to the members of the Shiloh Literary Society on Tuesday evening, by the Rev R. D. Row- iand (Anthropos). The chairman was Mr E. Ethall. "THE -TRADITIONS AND SUPERSTI- I TIONS OF WALES." — A lecture on the above subject was delivered to the members the Salem Literary Society, on Wednesday evening, br Mr L. D. Jones (Llew Tegid), Bangor. § THEATRICAL.—On Monday and Tuesday evenings, the La Comedie Anglaise Company, under the management of Mr W. L. Dobell, paid a visit to this town, and, at the Guild Hall, performed "Against the Tide" and the "Sorrows of Satan." HOCKEY MATCH. — On Saturday, a hockey match took place between the Girls' Club of the Intermediate School and a club of the Intermediate Sdhool girls of Llangefni, and resulted in a victory for the Carnarvon club by six goals to none. Miss Bronwen Evans was the goalkeeper for Carnarvon. "THE FRENCH REVOLUTION." — On Wednesday evening, the Rev Evan Jones presided over the ordinary meeting of tho Mor:».h Literary Society, when an excellent paper was delivered by Mr Warringbon, M.A., of the Intermediate School, dealing with the French Revolution. The lecture was an intellectual treat. SPECIAL POLICE COURT.—On Tues- day, before J. R. Pritchard, Esq., and Em- ward Hughes, Esq., a man named John Wil- liam Jones, who said he hailed from Festin- iog, was charged with being drunk and dis- orderly, and with assaulting Mrs Williams, 17, Mountain-street- P.O. 61 proved the case, and the defendant was sent to prison for thre-e weeks. HISTRIONIC.—The Carnarvon Amateur Dramatic Society are busily lengaged in re- hearsing "Aurora Floyd" for production du- ing the Easter holidays for the benefit of the Catholic Schools. The society made such a good ihit with their "Legacy of Honour" that their re-appearance will be hailed with de- light by those who interest themselves in the cultivation of amateur dramatic talent. THE ROWING CLUB.At the executive meeting df the rowing club committee, held on Thursday evening, under the presidency of Mr W. S. Jones, solicitor, Mr John Cott- rell, the secretary pro. tem., submitted the accounts and balance-sheet. These were sub- sequently audited by Messrs John Jones and W. Jones, and we find that while the assets of the club amounts to £250, their liabili- ties do not exceed £30. LECTURE. — On Thursday evening, the Rev William Griffith, Ph.D., of Pontypridd, agent of the British and Foreign Unitarian Association, delivered', at the Institute, the first of a series of lectures. The subject was "The Search for Truth." There was a fair audience, Who seemed to appreciate highly the remarks of the lecturer. On Sunday ¡eve- ning, Dr Griffith will preach at the Guild Hatl. PRESENTATIONS.—On Sunday, at the Salem Sunday School, Mr G. Eardley, of the Queen's Cafe, who is removing to Bangor, was presented by his class with a handsome Bible in recognition of his services.—Mr T. Jones, railway inspector, Victoria-street, has been presented by his Sunday School class at Pendref with a handsomely-bound Bible, as a token of their esteem and respect for him as their teacher for a number of years. THE CHORAL SOCIETY.-On Wednes- day evening, a. well-attended meeting of choralists, was held at the Guild Hall, to con- sider the advisability of competing for the chief choral prize at the National Eisteddfod to be held at Festiniog. After considerable discussion it was resolved to compete for chief honours at the Eisteddfod. Mr J. Wil- liams (organist of Christ Church) will be the conductor; and Mr W. LI. Griffith the sec- retary. THE QUEEN'S COMMEMORATION FUND.—The balance-sheet of the Carnarvon- shire Queen's Commemoration Fund in aid of the Jubilee Institute for Nurses has just been audited by Mr Charles H. Rees, Car- narvon, and shows that the total amount col- lected was £ 1703, out of which, after pacing ) expenses, there remains a balance of J31650 19s 8d. Mr H. Lloyd Carter, the hon. sec., has called a meeting of subscribers to approve of a draft scheme for the administration of the fund, and the appointment of trustees. THE LATE MR TOMKINSON. —At a meeting of directors of the Carnarvonshire Liberal Club Buildings Company, Limited, held on Friday evening, the following re- solution was passed :—"That the directors of this company desire to record a most sincere vote of sympathy with Mrs Tomkinson and family in their sad and unexpected bereave- ment, which they have had in the demise of Mr W. B. Tomkinson, and that we, as a party, shall very much miss his valuable ser- vices which he always was so willing and ready to give us, and that unpresuminglv." ARMENIAN SALE OF WORK. — The numerous friends who assisted in the sale of Armenian goods, recently conducted by Messrs E. H. Owen and Sons, will be in- terested to learn that the sale realised £ 15 8s 4^d. The whole of this amount has been 2 sent to the distressed Armenians, all the ex- penses of the sale being borne by the local committee. An interesting lecture, illus- trated by limelight views, on "Athens and Constantinople," is to be delivered by Pro- fessor Arnold, of Bangor, on Thursday, the 24th inst., at the Guild HalL The object of the lecturer is deserving of every support. THE UNIVERSITY COURT.-The next meeting of the Court of the University of Wales will be held at Carnarvon, on Thurs- day, the 28th of April. The Mayor of Car- narvon (Dr R. Parry) will entertain the court at luncheon. The court numbers about 100 members, of which about 80 may be expected to attend. This being the first meeting of the court held at Carnarvon, arrangements are being made for the court to go in, pro- cession to CastlcTsquare, and place a wreath upon the pedestal of Sir Hugh Owen's monu- ment. It is hoped that the Carnarvon Cor- poration, governors of the Public Schools, members of School Boards, managers of Ele- in ent a ry Schools, and other public bodies, to- gether with the school children, will join in the. procession. GLANBEUNO GA.RDENS.The follow- ing appears in the current number of the "Gardening World": — Glanbeuno, the charming residence of the late Mr F. W. Foster situated within two miles of the town of Carnarvon, has been sold to Mr Owen Jones, of Green Bank, Carnarvon. Mr John Williams has been head gardener here for many years, and has engaged to re- main in the game ,position with the new pur- chaser. Glanbeuno is noted for its fine gar- dens and long ranges of glasshouses, consist- ing of plant houses, vines and peaches. The range of peach houses is 150 feet in length, and one old Royal George about thirty-five years old has spread on the back wall, cover- ing half the house, and yielding regularly yi: every season about 200 peaches, rich in flavour and colour, and many times at the head of the winning boards a1» various pro- vinctlal shows. 'Mums are represented here also when the fever comes round in Novem- ber. Also specimens of Crotons and Orchids. Grapes finish well here. The ejection will take place April 2nd. FATAL ACCIDENT TO A SHIP CAP- PENTER.-The news has just reached Car- narvon of a fatal accident which has befallen a native of this town, named James Emmas, son of the late Mr James Emmas, ship car- penter, Snowdon-street, whilst on his voyage to Astoria, Oregon, U.S.A., on board the British barque "Ross-shire." It appears that the accident occurred on the afternoon of the 24th of February, whilst the vessel was cros- sing into the river at Astoria. A tremendous swell was running at the time, which caused the vessel to roll heavily, and a heavy pig pen fastened forward of the main hatch, broke loose. The deceased, who was a car- penter, tried to secure it, and was caught between it and the rail, crushing his skull, and killing him instantly. The vessel gave another lurch, which released him, and he rolled over dead. The captain of the vessel immediately gave information of the oc- currence, and the ibody was taken ashore, when an inquiry was held. The funeral took place on the following day, when his remains were interred in Cladstop cemetery. De- ceased was 41 years of age, and had been on board the "Russ-shire" for about 4-L years. 2 The company to whidh the vessel belonged speak of him as a good all round man, and a faithful servant. About two years ago, a brother of the deceased, named John Em- mas, met his deatih in a somewhat similar way. COLWYN BAY. ORGAN RECITAL. — On Wednesday afternoon and evening, Mr W. H. Jude gave an organ recital at St. John's Chapel. MR BLUD.—The residents of Colwyn learn with extreme regret of Councillor John Blud's intention to leav ethe town for his native place. His departure will be sorely I I missed, inasmuch as he was one of the most useful and intelligent public men in the locality. THE DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTION. —A meeting of Liberals was held on Tuesday night to consider the advisability of contest- ing the return of Mr John Porter (C.). The other retiring members are Mr John Ro- berts (L-X and Thomas Parry (L.). No de- cision was arrived at, and the probability is that the three candidates will be returned unopposed. Mr Robert Evans (L.) retires in the Colwyn Ward. The nomination takes place on Thursday. A LOCAL BUILDING DISPUTE. — At Chester Assizes on Tuesday, before Mr Justice Channel, sitting without a jury, an action was brought by Mr Percy Toppin, of London, against Mr Humphrey Lewis, Col- wyn Bay, to recover damiages for injury done to building land. Mr Abel Thomas, Q.C., M.P., was for the plaintiff, and Mr F. Mar- shall, Q.C., with Mr Montgomery, for the defendant. Mr Thomas stated that in 1893 a piece of land containing 4840 square yards and situate practically in the centre of Col- wyn Bay, was conveyed from the plaintiff to the defendant. The" latter began to make a large gravel pit, and gradually got nearer and nearer the boundary of the plaintiff's land. The pit was something like 30ft. deep, and it would be understood how the sur- rounding earth would gradually fall in. Ac- cording to his measurements 167 yards were actual^- exeavated, and the plaintiff submitted that 229 square yards were so affected that it wtas utterly impossible to use it in any way with the land adjoining, which was building land. The vailue they had put upon it was 9s per superficial yard, which was the price paid by the defendant five years before. It was a question of damages pure and simple. The reasonable thing would be for the defendant to take this land at the same price.—Mr Marshall pointed out that a great deal of the scooping out on the left of the boundary had been done years ago, and that the sand pit existed when the defendant bought the plot.—Air Thomas admitted that a sand pit existed when the conveyance took place, but it only went down a depth of 4ft. to the same level as the road, and did ab- solutely no damage to the land. That, of course, had not been included in the claim. —Mr Marshall, on behalf of the defendant, admitted that there had been some subsi- dence, but contended that it was confined to 61 superficial yards. The price of 9s per yard put upon it was perfectly absurd. The land adjoining was 12ft. higher than the road, and this would have to be cut down to obtain a uniform building level.-His Lord- ship gave judgment for the. plaintiff for £25 and costs.

CONWAY. DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES. — On Thursday night, Councillor C. J. Wallace (the mayor), accompanied by Lieut. W. A. Jones, presented prizes to the members of the Conway contingent of the "E" Company of the 3rd Batt. R.W. Fusiliers, who ob- tained the highest score in the shooting com- petition. This was the first competition for the company to use the Lee-Metford rifle. The following were the winners, with their respective scores —Sergt. J. Jones, 59 Pt. J. Jones, 57; Pt. J. O. DENBIGH. A WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH. — On Thursday morning, a woman named Catherine Huglhes, a sempstress, was found burnt to death in her house in Mount-pleasant. The old lady was a spinster, and lived by herself. About noon, some of the neighbours noticed smoke coming out of the house. Sergeant Ohaloner and others broke into the house, and found it full of smoke. Upstairs, they discovered that the bed was on fire, and in it were found the charred remains of the de- eeased. An inquest will be held to-day.

HOLYHEAD. FIRE.-On Wednesday evening, a fire was discovered in a cottage situated in William- street. It seems that a beam in the chimney ignited and fears were entertained that tho adjoining premises might get ablaze. Dr Roland P. Williams and the members of the fire-brigade soon appeared upon the scene and the fire was got under. Hundreds ot people congregated on the spot, and a man named Fagan put the hose to play upon them and dispersed the cpowd. CHARGE OF L ..■> STEALING. —On Saturday, at the Holyhead: Police Court, be- fore Owen Hughes, Esq., Owen Roberts, Llanddeusant, was oharged by P.C. Owen Hughes, Bodedern, with stealing two lambs, cl 11 the property of Mrs Elizabeth Williams, Hap- ran, Llantrisant, on the 10th inst.-It ap- pears that Hugh Williams, blacksmith, met Constable Hughes, and told him that on the previous nighit two lambs had been stolen from his mother's tield. Shortly afterwards, as they were proceeding along the road, the defendant's sister came along, and intimated to the man Williams that lambs had been re- turned to his mother's farm, and asked Wil- liams not to take any action in the matter. In answer to the constable, vne girl said that her brother had stolen the lambs, and that her father and uncle had returned them.- The constable afterwards had a talk with the prisoner, and cautioned' him in the usual way, when he admitted the offence, and as&ed the constable not to proceed against him.—The farther was very much concerned about the young man (defendant) and offered to pay the constable a. sovereign if he would not proceed further with the matter.-The case was remanded to Lianerehymedd, bail being allowed. LL AN BE HIS. THE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL. — A short time ago, it was doubtful whether an intermediate school would be established for the Llanberis district. Now, however, all such doubt has disappeared, for a building site has been secured, and an architect is already engaged in preparing plans for the buildings. The success of the movement is due to the generous donations of friends interested in the matter, the capability of certain members of the governing body, and the enthusiasm and generosity of the public generally in the upper portion of the parish of Llanddeiniolen and of some at Llanberis and Llanrug. The following are among the chief donors:—Mr Assheton-Smith, three acres of land as a building site, and £100 in money; Mr Tate, Liverpool, £100: Mr Rathbone, do.. 250, Mr Lloyd Hughes, Coed Helen, £ 50; Mr Barnard, Brynbras Castle, B50. Sums varying from E7 to S100 have 31:'0 been subscribed by the Noncon- formist churches in Uppen Llanddeiniolen, through the unflagging energv of the pas- tors. Dr W. LI. O. Williams, Mr D. P. LLANDUDVO. A ROMAN CATHOLIC PRESBYTERY. -The Roman Catholics have decided to erect a handsome presbytery adjoining their place of worship. LLANRWST. PETTY SESSIONS. —Monday, before Col. Johnson and Dr Jones.—Robert Jones, R. I Roberts, R. Thomas, and J. Inigo Jones, were fined for drunkenness.—J. Inigo Jones was sentenced to three weeks' imprisonment with hard labour for assaulting a policeman in the execution of his duties.—For allowing his cattie to strao- Evan Jones, Capel Garmon, was fined 2s and costs. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. —Between twelve and one o'clock on Wednesday morning, the ptemises occupied as a lock-up shop by Mr W. J. Jones, and known as Stanley House, were found to be on fire. The fire engine was speedily brought to the spot, but owing to the absence of the captain and low pres- sure of water, it was not able to render any assistance until the fire had completely gutted the premises. The whole of the stock and the building were entirely destroyed. Mr Simms, landlord of the Star Vaults, and Mr Morris narrowly escaped being buried under j one of the walls as it fell, and both received considerable injuries from falling stones. The I property was insured.

j NEVIN. j THE SHOW.—Additional interest in the forthcoming show has been created by the offer of a silver cup (valued at B5 5s) for the best horse or mare for agricultural purposes in Lleyn. The prospects of a good show are excellent.

PORTMADOC. THE PROPOSED LIGHT RAILWAY.— On Thursday night, a very enthusiastic meet- ing was held to discuss the question of whether the proposed Beddgelert Railway would be beneficial or detrimental to the trade of Portmadoc. The meeting was held at Mr Barnard's Rooms, when he presided. A good number, on short notice, came to- gether. The following gentlemen took part in the proceedings —Messrs R. G. Hum- phreys (R. o Fadog), R. Newell, Cadwaladr Griffith, Councillors R. McLean and D. Williams, R. P. Lewis, J. Bryant, W. H. Evans (the secretary of the meeting), &c. It was passed unanimously to support only the candidates at the future election for the urban district council who will favour the line. A hearty vote of thanks to the chair- man was passed. THE VOLUNTEERS.—On Thursday evening, a muster of the "B" Company took evening, a muster of the "B" Company took place in the Drill Hall to 'hear the farewell address of Captain C. E. Breese, Morfa Lodge, who is compelled to retire from the command of the company, owing to Lis in- ability to give the necessary time and at- tention such a position in the company en- tails. After an interesting address from him, in Which he thanked the company for tneir attention while under his command, Lieutenant J. R. Prichard spoke, and urged on all members to give as much of their time possible to drills and class firing, and ti.creby keep up the good name they had won in shooting and drilling. Mr Breese will still remain a honorary member of the company- Lieutenant Prichard will in all company. Lieutenant Prichard will in all probability succeed him as captain. Mr Breese has been a volunteer for 11 years. After the speeches three hearty cheers were given to Captain Breese, and the company expressed their great regret that they should be compelled to lose such a good and capable commanding officer. THE COUNTY SCHOOL. — On Friday evening, a meeting of the local governing body was held, under the presidency of Mr Jonathan Davies (chairman). — A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr R. Bounds, J.P., one of the governors, who was indis- posed.—The Chairman stated that he had seen Mr Casson, and that he had promised to meet a deputation from the committee that afternoon to consider where the head- master's house should be bin t. JThe Chair- man. Dr Griffith, and Mr D. Morris, were requested to see to the matter, and to report to the next meeting.-T,he, committee ap- pointed to consider the question of technical instruction then submitted a report. In- struction could either be given ir the school staff or by travelling teachers.—'Considerable discus«ir>n followed, the Chairman, the Rev T/l. R. Hughes, Mr J. T. Jones, Mr Burnell, and Mr J. Rhys Evans (the headmaster), taking part. therein, several advocating that the instruction be given by a stationary and' not by a travelling teacher.—Finally, it was decided, on the motion of Dr Morris, second- ed by Dr Griffith, thai a special meeting bet held to give the .natter full cons.deration, the governors to consider the report.—The Rev LI. R. Hughes thought it would be well to send a report to ihe teachers of the elemen- tary schools, in order to have eir views.— This suggestion was not seconded.—Mr D. Morris reported ks to what had been done with regard to riio playgrounds. The ex- pense was over JE14, but Messrs Lester and D. Morris had contributed £ 10.—The Clerk read the financial statement, which showesL that the balance in hand was £259. Dr Morris had paid the remaining JE40 of the subscriptions (hear, hear). Some subscrip- tions promised were still unpaid, and tha committee was requested to collect them.

THE LITERARY SOCiKTIES.—At the, joint meeting of the local literary societies, this week, the meeting formed tself into & Parliament, the Mayor (Mr Cledwyn Owen) making an excellent Prime Minister. THE GUARDIANS.—It is rumoured that Mr E. R. Davies is likely to be selected as a guardian of the poor, if Mr 1 homas Evans will not come out as a cand date. The other two guardians, Dr Griffith and Mr J. Wil- liams, are re-elected.

Kli Y L. YACHT-RACING. — The Rhyl Yackt Club opened the season on Saturday with 12ft. centre-board races on the Marine Lake. Prior to the event a meeting of the com- mittee had been held, wl'en a -ew code of rules, based on those used at the Hoylake Sailing Club, was drawn up and passed. The opening race was in every way a success, and these contests are again likely to form an attractive feature in the programme of the Rhyl season. SUDDEN DEATH OF AN EX-COUNTY COUNCILLOR.—The sudden death is re- ported of Mr Robert Roberts, D-serth Hall. The deceased, who had been ailing for some time, was taken ill on Thursday, and expired I almost immediately. He was one of the best- known farmers in Flintshire, and had resided for 20 years at Dyser+h Hall, having formerly farmed at Kelston. He was also known aa an extensive dealer, and highly respected by all. For many years be bad filled various public offices. and had been a county coun- cillor for the Dysertn Division of Flintshire for five years, but did not seek re-election on Saturday. DISTRICT COUNCIL. At Monday's monthly meeting, held under the presidency of Mr Joseph :t was reported that the town clerk had wr'tron to the command- ing-officer with the T-lew nf preventing the en- campment of the Fb'ntsVre .md Denbighshire Militia at Rhyl. In reply. Colonel Sandbach wrote, from Algiers. expressincr surprise at receiving such a lft+er. and adding:—"I feet confident that af+p,r our visit, you will, like the inhabitants of every ot.ner locality where we have encamped, extend to us a cordial in- vitation to come again to Rhvl as soon as pos- sible."—It was proposed to again write to the authorities, protesting against the en- cimping of the Militia -it the time stated, but that the council would be pleased to see them in the district earl'er in the vear. The resolution was carried by 11 votes to 3.—At a meeting of the roads tiud foreshore committee, it was resolved to make a- promenade 20 feet wide in connection w;fh +'he proposed sea de- fence works at the on«t eii(I a-V\ t'hat the proposed works be taken as an instalment of old larger scheme to extend to the site of the old Alexandra Hospital.—The minutes were carried.

ST. A^-APH. SUDDEN DEATH.-On Friday, Mr John Helsby, seedsman and florist, St. Asaph, died from pneumonia, after a few lays' ill- ness. His illness was unknown to many, and the news of his death caused consternation in the city. He was well-known at the Liverpool and Manchester markets. PARISH COUNCIL ELECTION. — A meeting of the St. Asaph parishioners, to elect eleven members to serve on the St. Asaph Parish Council, was held on Monday evening, under the presidency of Mr Myles Partington. Over 30 nomination papers were handed in, but eventually the old members were returned.

T< >WYN URBAN COUNCIL.—Mr J. M. James presided over a meeting of this council, held I on Friday. It was agreed to write to the gas company stating that unless they restored the streets to their normal condition before seven days, the board would do the work and charge the company with the cost.—Mr J. Tomlins, Aberdovey, wrote stating that he understood the council intended running the water out of Penrhos Lake into the new reservoir so that it would be used for dom- estic purposes. He trusted the council had considered the consequences, as the water had been lying stagnant for hundreds of years. It was stated that the water would ■ be filtered and analysed. The General Post- office wrote stating they would establish a telegraph office at Bryncrug village if the council would guarantee to pay half the de- ficiency in case of failure. The letter was referred to the rural members of the council. -Dr Grosholz was re--elecied medical officer, and Mr Edward Williams, inspector.—Mr P. H. Hughes, who has occupied the post of surveyor for twenty-five years, submitted notice of resignation. 119

TRAWSFVNYDD. ELECTORAL.—For the parish council: < Messrs Griffith Jones, Frongaled; W. W. Owen, Board School; Evan Parny, Fron- galed; John Phillips, R. Roberts, Borth Ddu; R. Roberts, 12, Penygareg; and W. Williams, Fronwynion, were elected unop- posed as representatives for the Western Ward, the farmers quietly allowing two seats to slip through their hands; while in the Eastern Ward, there was hot fighting between the farmers and workmen. The voting re- sulted in the election of Mr W. Evans, Rhyd- felin the Rev E. B. Thomas, rector; Messrs H. Jones, Llwyncrwn; Morris Jones, Bryn- Uefrith Evan Jones, Gwynfynydd; J. Lloyd Jones, Ty'npistyll; Griffith Jarrett, Blaeny- cwm and R. Evans, Tyllwyd.—Subsequent- ly, Messrs Richard A. Roberts, Wm. Evana, D. T. Jones, and the Rev E. B. Thomas, B.A., rector, were suggested as guardians and district councillors. Two of these, however, refused to stand a contest. A vote was taken, resulting in S7 votes for Evans, 42 for Ro- berts, 37 for Thomas, and 16 for Jones. The first three were declared eleobed.

TR KM A DOC. THE ELECTIONS.—At a meeting of the electors, on Monday evening, five candidates were chosen to contest three seats in the forthcoming election of the urban district council, two in favour of the proposed Bedd- gelert Railway Scheme, and three against.

DEATH OF TFE REV D. S. JONES, CHWILOG. This (Friday) morning, a telegram ar- rived in Chwilog to the effect that the above well-known Congregational minister had died suddenly at Rhyl on his way to the Metro- polis to consult a specialist. He preached in his chapel on Sunday, and went to Abererch the same day. He was the biographer of Ap Vvchan, and had just commenced upon the biography of the late Dr Herber Evans..

The influenza epidemic is working serious ravages in Carnarvonshire. About a thou- sand men engaged at the Penrhvn Slate Quar- ries are down with it, and almost the like btJate of things prevails in the Llanberis dis- trict. At Bangor, there is hardly a house -free from it, and it is exceedingly prevalent in Carnarvon, though not of a very severe type.

The death took place on Wednesday of the Rev Thomas Job, D.D., of Conwil, near Car- marthen, one of the oldest and best known ministers of the Calvinistic Methodist body In West Wales. Dr Job was ordained in 1855, and was one of the pioneers of the temperance movement in South Wales, his services as a speaker at temperance gatherings being in great request. In 1887 88, he filled the chair of the South Wales and Monmouthshire As- <30ciation.

A large number of the Welsh citizens of Manchestei have resolved upon presenting the corporation with a portrait of Aiderman J. Foulkes Roberts, the Deputy Lord Mayor, in; commemoration of his Lord Mayoralty during her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee year, and in the 80th year of his age. __n
