Powerful natibns have been stirred to their depths; insults, challenges, defiance, even actual pre- paration for war have astonished a world that had only just been celebrating the birth- o day of the Prince of Peace. The facts axe now tolerably clear. The Transvaal Re- public, which is an independent state (except that its 'foreign relations are subject to the approval of the British Government) con- tains valuailile gold irines. These are worked by a population of outlanders-mainly Bri- tish. The Boers-farmers of Dutch descent, to whom the country belongs—afraid of being swatmped by the outlanders, have re- stricted the franchise, insisted an the use of the Dutch language in the courts and schools, and in other ways have done just what Conservattve oligarchies are. wont to do all the world over, since civil go- vernment was inverted. The outlanders deoided to rebed; amd asked Dr Jameson, the Scoitsman wfho fcVts on the throne of Lo- bengula, and who was encamped on the border, to come to their assitance. That worthy freebooter, at the head of a few hundred men (badly provided with food and ainmunttiixn) made a rush for Johannesburg. The people of the town, on their part, also made ready to fight. Mr Kruger, the Pre- sident of the Transvaal Republic, tele- graphed to Mr Chamberlain, who, with great energy, cabled orders through Sir Hercules Robinson, the Htgli Commis- sioners, and other British officers, ordering Dr Jameson and also the British subjects at Johannesburg to desist. Jameson disregard- ed the order, fought the Boers with reckless courage, sustained a very heavy lossi of killed and wounded, and when he had fired his last cartridge, surrendered. The out- landers did apparently nothing. They failed to apprise Jameson that they had caved in, in obedience to Mr Chamberlain's orders; and did not even block the railway, so as to prevent the Boers getting fresh. supplies of aiimiiuRiiifton. Later, they surrendered un- conditionally. The 'Emperor of Germany telegraphed liis congratulations to President Kruger iin terms which ignored the Queen's suzerainty; and the Berlin papers announced that wiarslhips were to be sent to Delagoa Bay to "protect German interests." These items of news excited considerable astonish- ment in the staldest of Britons; and the Jingoes lashed themselves into fury. Those who are skilful to turn" fits of national frenzy to their c wn. advantage, clamoured loudly for military and naval preparations. The Government, nothing loth, determined to squander a few miFions more on a navy, which is already of fabulous strength, but which, nevertheless, cannot even compel the SuHtan to leave off slaughtering the Armen- ians. The British Government made anoslt strenuous efforts to save the life of Jameson. Having 'been formally ooiidemned to death, he was pardoned, and delivered to the High Commissioner. Mr Cecil Rhodes, Prime Minister Of Oape Colony, and managing di- rector of the Chartered Oompaaiy now rifling Matabeiia, being suspected of complicity in the lawless raid, lifa.,3 resigned. The outi landers and their grievances have taken a back seat. Whefle are the lessons? They are so thick upon the ground that it is impossible to do more than pick up a few. How im- pressively does the. while incident teiacih that it is much easier to oppress than bear oppression'. What, after all, did the out- land'efTs suffer ? The burdens imposed on the mining indiustitv ? The royalties on the coal, iron, and slates mines in this country are equally iniquitous. That outlanders were not allowed to vote for the- election of the Transvaal upper chamber? In this country, even native Britons are not allowed to elect the House of Lords; and a foreigner who should) claim to do so would be deemed a marvel of impudence. Proscription of the language of the people in the courts and schools? Well, Mr Thomas Ellis told an interviewer that outlanders had merely a taste of what Welshmen have had to suffeT for a very long while; and if they found it bitter, it may occur to them and their chamfpi'ons that other people And it equally distasteful. It has just come to light, how- ever, that he has been married since 1668, and that he has a family of three children —one son and two daughters. The son— also a Lewis Morris—is about to be married, and will take up his residence at the family seat near Carmarthen, where the poet's bro' ther, Mr C. E. Morris, has hitherto resided. The voluntary school question was fought out stubbornly for some weeks. The public platform and the public press were utilised to the full, and the greatest interest was taken i.n the campaign, 'liiere were 15 seats to be gained. The sectarians nomi- nated eight candidates and the unseobarians proposed the same number, so that the odd seat and the control of the board were in the balance.
