. Cycling. II
Cycling. II At a motor show held in New York, sixty-five firms exhibited. An American paper estimates the number of cycles built in the States this year as 825.000. Major Taylor, the negro sprinter, lias issued a challenge to ride any racing man in the world. Distance one mile, the best out of three heats to decide. Tyres suitable for use on carrier tricycles are now manufactured by the Dunlop Company. The ease of propulsion attained from the use of these specially constructed tyres means an enor- mous saving in wear and tear, as well as a large waving in time. At one time bicycle-polo looked like becoming a popular game amongst the cycle clubs, but some- how or another it has not fulfilled its promise. The game will, however, be played in the winter season at the Crystal Palace, and matches will take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Un- doubtedly the game is an excellent one and offers many attractions. And perhaps the reason why it has not been so widely taken up as was expected, is to be found in the lack of organization and effort. It is to be hoped that the long spell of play which will be Been during the coming winter season on the Crystal Palace ground will go a great way to popularize the game and increase its supporters. At length the last of the one thousand miles automobile tour has perhaps been heard, the wind- ing up function taking the form of a dinner at the Trocadero restaurant at which eome 125 members and friends sat down. Prizes were presented, speeches made, and a special presentation made to Mr. Johnson, the secretary of the club, for the hard work he did in 80 eakefactorily organizing the tour. It is rarely that a man who undertakes snch a task as the organization of the automobile one thousand miles tour must have been, is success- ful in doing so without making some enemies, but from all accounts it appears that there is nothing but praise for the manner in which Mr. Johnson accomplished the work, and the testimonial which was given him together with a purse of 100 sovereigns, were both most deserved. A prominent cyclist recently made a count at one of the popular spots on the Great North Road with a view to ascertaining what percentage of machines were fitted with mud-guards. Two counts were made, each of 100 bioycles. In the first hundred (all men's machines,) only thirty- eight were fitted with mud-guards, the remaining sixty-two being guardless. The second hundred showed but slight improvement, forty-two only having this very necessary accessory. Asa matter of fact there is at present a fair amount of argument as to the windage of the mnd-guard. Some contending that the mud-guard acts as a brake. There is a certain amount of truth in this, but the resistance offered is more than made up by the personal comfort to the rider and the cleanliness of the cycle. It is really remarkable that so many of the average machines of the day are without guards. t A very neat cycle accessory has recently been placed upon the market in the form of a spring cape-carrier. Hitherto we have had to carry our cycle capes on the handle-bar or behind the saddle by means of straps. The new accessory is in the form of a wire clip which is fixed to the baek stays of the machine and which when in action firmly presses the neatly rolled mackintosh against the stays, thus holding it in firm position. It is simplicity itself, and the wonder is that makers have not thought of it before. A. A. Chase, the famous racing man, is said to be still hankering after the world's one hour cycle record, and it is stated that after his recent stay in Paris he has decided to be paced in his attempt by a motor tricycle. Undoubtedly the motor tricycle is a very much better pacing machine than a motor tandem, the width of the former, together with its general construction, both offering very great advantages indeed from a racing man's point of view. From the width and build of the machine one can easily see how that the racing man can get close up to the axle and thus ride in the most sheltered position. The tandem does not offer anything like such a shelter and it is rather sur- prising that the three-wheeler is not more used than it is. i: Any article treating of the evolution ot the cycle, which does not dwell upon the important part the Dunlop tyre has played in the development of the industry, would necessarily be as incomplete, and as imperfect, as if in a history of steam locomo- tion the names of Watts and Stevenson were omitted." Such is the opinion expressed by the Whitehall Review and all those who cycled in the eighties." Ever since 1888 when the tyre was first introduced, the cycle has grown into public favour by leaps and bounds, and aow go where one will, he cannot get away from the endlest whir of the wheel. The good quality of the materials, the skilled workmanship, and the Test experience of the Dunlop Company enable them to produce a tyre that is a marked favourite with the public. When one considers the extent of eyoling, and the number of riders both expert and noviee there are upon tho roads, it must be admitted that the fatal accidents arising, through the cycle are ex- ceedingly low. Cases now and again come to light, a sad one being that of A. C. Hills, a well- known rider in the North of London and a popular member of the Stanley Cycling Club. The deceased it is supposed essayed to ride down Barnet Hill with his feet on the fork crown, and after proceeding some distance, the machine skidded, throwing the rider with great force to the ground and injuring him severely on the head and hip. At the Victoria Cottage Hospital, he, for some clays lay unconscious and, when at last he rallied and was able to recognise his friends, it was found necessary to operate in order to remove the pressure of the scull upon the brain. Though this was successfully performed he passed away last Friday.
