,Cycling.
Cycling. Liverpool cyclists are taking steps to secure for themselves a cycle track. The use of every part of a machine should be carefully studied by all cyclists. In lSS" when the first pncnmatic tyre made its appearance, up to the present day, the Dnnlop tyre has retained the high position of holding first place in public estimation. The cycle parade recently held at Chester re- sulted in a surplus of £18) 12". 21., which, with the exeepUou of 1*10 given as a honorarium to the secretary, lias been distributed amongst local charities. Many people are npt to complain of aches and pains when first taking to cycling. This is only what might be expected dormant muscles, sud- denly brought into action, are bound to stiffen and cause the rider some inconvenience. The Italian "War oflLials »,re experimenting with a new folding bicycle, which, if proving satisfactory, will supersede thodc at present in use. Two regu. lar companies of cyclists are already attached to the 4th and 5th Regiments of Bersnglicri, and two more are at present being organised. The danger attendant upon cycle carnivals has often been the subject of discussion. Participants in cycle carnivals arc all more or less airily dressed in inflammable material, and as nearly every machine in these events nowadays bears the Japanese lantern, it is at once evident that serious danger might easiiv result. Recently, a cycle carnival in aid of an infirmary was held at Wrex- ham, and was subjected to a sudden interruption. No less than seventeen persons had dressed them. selves in wadding wool, and were just about to leave the starting place in a car when someone threw a lighted match in their midst. Instantly their was a blaze of fire, the woollen material naturally flaring up at once. Every one of the seventeen was badly injured, while some had to bo carried into an adjacent house and others taken to the identical infirmary, curiously enough, in the interests of which the carnival was being held. Some little while back the Burgh Commissioners of Saltcoats passed a by-law prohibiting wheelmen from using certain roads in the Burgh between the hours'of 6.0 p.m. and 10.0 p.m., but we are glad to state that it has failed to receive the confirmation of the Secretary for Scotland, who also refused to sanction another proposition of the same authori- ties, limiting the speed of cyclists through the Burgh to six miles an hour. He allowed the limi- tation of eight miles an hour. J A large amount of discussion has appeared in the cycling press with reference to the great show question, as to whether it is policy on the part of the cycle and accessories manufacturers to sup- port the annual exhibits at the Agricultural Hall and the Crystal Palace. Many know-alls have strongly expressed their opinions that to do so is to wastefully spend money, the outlay necessary in fitting up the stands, etc., exceeding the value of the orders accruing from such an exhibition. Whether this is the case or not, one would be in. clined to think the makers themselves were best able to judge, and the fact that they have ex- tended their patronage year after year points pretty conclusively to the opposite being the case. At the coming shows, to be held towards the end of next mouth, there is at present a slight redac- tion in the number of exhibitors but then it must be remembered that the number of members in the cycle making trade is considerably less than was the case a year or so ago. Once again the cycle has been the effective means of bringing a wrong-doer to justice. The owner of the machine in question was so surprised to see a lady pursuing two men in Bayswater, that he at once willingly joined in the pursuit in order to see what service he could render. The fugitives were no match at all against the mounted cyclist who verj, quickly came up to the two runaways and captured one of them, who was subsequently awarded three months hard labour for stealing. If the day ever comes when our own police are mounted on cycles, we shall see a decided falling off in the purse-snatching bent of the lower class of criminals of London. II. Green, of the Silverdale C.C., is undoubtedly the finest road rider not only of this year but at anyratc of some few years past. He has already accomplished some wonderful unpaced rides, which have in merit, however, all been capped by his most recent series of performances. On Tues- day the Hith inst., starting away from the General Post Oilice, London, he covered 100 miles unpaced in 5hrs. Bniins. 43secs., some twenty-two minutes better than the previous" best." Continuing on, he reached York in lOhrs. ltfmins., which showed a beating of the previous record by lhr. 47mins. Having accomplished such a distance (197 miles), in such a short time, he naturally went on for the twelve hours' record, and succeeded in beating this by as much as 21^2 miles, covering the total distance of 223 miles. Green rode a machine built on the cantilever principle and fitted with ^Dunlop tyres. j The recent free wheel contests have raised in the cycling press quite an interesting series of letters. In one case, the writer, who is a practical man and thoroughly advanced in all matters apper- taining to cycle construction, commits himself to the statement that the difference between a free wheel device running on plain bearings is such as to be negligible. The theory is remarkable and obviously incorrect. Ball bearings in cycle con- struction are acknowledged to be far and away superior to any other form of bearings, roller, cone, or plain, and this being so it is out of the question to suppose that a plain surface in one of the most important running parts of the cycle is going to give anything like so good results as would be the case were that running part on balls. The talk about perfectly smooth and fitting surfaces with a film 0f oil interposed between, is all valueless. Perhaps the principal cause leading to this plain bearing theory is that the harder running is not felt physically by the cyclist. Had tIt) cyclist to drive that plain bearing, he would very quickly discover it was not to be compared with the up. date and universal acceptod form,
