c; A Weighty Couple. The heaviest married couple in the world weigh exacily 1,2021b. Mr Chauncey Morland, the hunband, is 28 years of age and weighs. 7481b avoirdupois, his height being 5ft lOin. Compared with him hit wife is a veritable fairy, only weighing 454lb but then, she is 1 ft taller than her lopd, being a giantess of 6ft ICin in stature. Besides, she is quite young—only 25—that there is plenty of time for her to II. grow yet. In 1898 this interesting couple had the honour of appearing before the Czar and Czarina at Nishui Novgorod, and have altogether spent seven years in touring about Europe. They enjoy robust health, and its usual accom- paniment-jovial temperament.

There is a rumour that the cyclists of Liverpool purpose holding a cycle show eariy next year. If this be true, it is extremely problematical whether the promoters will receive the snpport of the trade. The two London shows find some little difficulty in this respect. Of all cycle inventions which carrv with them fan-oiirable ifeatiires, t)itlt Of the chainless cycle has failed most noticeably to impress the public. Although extensively pushed by one or two firms in this country, and in very general use in America, very few machines of this type are seen upon British highways. The public are quite satisfied with the chain driven cycle, and do not require the chainless, even if there are one or two points in its favour. The National Cyclists' Union has taken advice on the legality of tramway companies watering their lines for the purpose of assisting traction, and are now anxious to receive particulars of any case of injuries received through side-slipping on the wet lines, so that they may commence legal proceedings. Few are the cyclists, who ride in tram-infested areas, who have not at some time or other come to grief through this system of water- ing and any action for tiie renioval of the cause of danger will be gladly received by aCl whiaelnieii. I know the railway companies do not treat cyclists well." It is very interesting to note how cyclists are gradually being recognized as an important body. The authorities of the Canning Town track have for a long time past refused permission for motors to be used upon the path, but evidently this decision has now been cancelled, for during the other week Mr. C. Jarrott, the well-known motorist, went for a record spin upon the path in question, which proved to be both fast and safe. Mr. Jarrott rode five miles in 7mins. 22 2-5 see, ten miles in 14mins. 48 3-5secs. and fifteen mi!es in 22mins. 9 3-5secs. The last namp distance was covered in no less than 19 l-osecs. better than the previous British record. No doubt other attempts will now be made upon the path, owing to its hav- ing been proved suitable and safe for high speed motor work. At the Bow County Court last week the pro- prietor of the Castle Hotel, Woodford, and a cyclist named Hutchings attended to settle their little dispute. It appears that cyclists leaving their machines in charge of an attendant at the "Castle" and paying one penny, are relieved of all risk of their machines being stolen. This Hutcli- ings did, but on going to claim his cycle it hn 1 disappeared. He claimed from the proprietor the sum of 1:15. 5s. The hotel proprietor, however, said that the thief had been found and the bicycle recovered. The judge, nevertheless, ordered him to pay the cyclist A:12, the bicycle when handed over by the police being his property. There must be in our midst a large number of persons suffering from some affliction of the legs, though perfectly strong and healthy in all other respects. Of course, to these, bicycles are quite out of the question, but a litfht hand-driven tricycle could in many instances be used. In this respect it is surprising that more general use i« not made of these tricycles, naore especially as one or two firms have paid special attention to their construction, and are turning out machines with a high class finish. Certainly some of the earlier hand-driven tricycles had a tumbledown appear- ance, but this cannot be said of the present day productions. Fitted with the reliable Dunlop- Welch tyres, these tricycles would prove beneficial to many a cripple. What must be written down as one of the finest hour rides of the year was recently accomplished by Harry Elkes, the champion pace follower of America, at Brockton (L.S.A.I in a one hour's match against Arthur Ross. For some time past Elkes bus been riding very indifferently, in fact, since his return from Europe he has done very little in the way of record riding, so that his big performance cllwe as a surprise to many. Getting away to a good start, Elkes managed to improve upon the previtns American bests at two miles, and, following the pace in his usual faultless style, kept inside to the finish,covering the remarkable distance of 39 miles 1045 yards in the hour. which is a fine performance seeing that he only used tandems as pacing instruments, thus only covering 613 yards less than the world's hour record made behind well sheltering motor tricycles. Free wheel contests promise to lie very popular next season, and no doubt they will form part of ihe programmes of the big athletic and cycling gatherings. Some very good performances have recently been iiccomplished by the well-known Birmingham free-wheclist, W. A. f Baxter, the winner of the Catford contest, who at present holds the world's free wheeling rccord. For some time past it has been the ambition of many cyclists to cover half a mile on the len-el without the use of the pedals, and the task h:IS at last been accom- plished. Baxter having covered 892 yards on the Aston truck, Birmingham, the time taken l>eing 3 mill. 44 3-3 sec. Holioway. another Birming- ham rider, is now paying a tittle attention to free- wheeling, and as he has already covered half a lIl¡]C we mav expect him to eclipse Baxter's per- formance ere long, particularly seeing that ilollo- way if juf of the speediest of amateur sprinters.
