ACCIDENTS.—Two slight accidents occurred in Car- marthen on Monday afternoon. Gianmore Phillips, the three-year-old child of Mr John Phillips, London House, was thrown out of the Pentresil n.i!k-cart m Lammas-street, about 5 p.m., but escaped with slight injuries.—Daniel Thomas, a workman with Mr William Howells, boat builder, was stepping out of a boat on to the Quay the same afternoon, when he slipped into the water instead. lie managed, however, to wade to a place of safety and with no worse damage than a moderately severe ducking. JOINT COUNTIES ASYLUM, CARMARTHEN EXAMINA- TION FOR NURSING CERTIFICATE.—On the 4th and 11th inst. the examination of the Medico-Psychological Association for the certificate in nursing, especially as it applies to the insane, was held at the Asylum, Car- marthen. Eleven candidates (including four who failed last year) presented themselves, of whom nine were successful, in the order stated, nainioly :Villiain Lodwick, William Evans, Joshua Harris, Margaret Ann Jones, John Thomas, Margaret Ann Bowen, Annie Thomas, James Clarke, and E. Nutman.—The examination, which comprises (1) written and (2) practical work, was conducted by Dr Glendinning, medical superintendent of the Joint Counties Asylum, Abergavenny, and Dr Goodall. PKIORDY CHAREL, CARMARTHEN.—The members of the Young People's and Dorcas Societies in con- nection with the above place met on Thursday evening (May 7th) to terminate their meetings for the summer months with an excellent coffee supper. The tables were beautifully decorated by the young lady members, and were heavily laden with various delicious things. Through the untiring elforts of Miss Cad van Jones and Mr Cur wen Davies, president and vice-president of the Dorcas and Young People's Society respectively, the supper, projected only a few days previously, gave every satisfaction, and caused much pleasure. The time, so happily spent, went so rapidly that the short programme, prepared, had to be abandoned, but the members, under the leadership of Mr Walter Thomas, rendered a few glees, and the proceedings were terminated with a rendering of the National Anthem. CRICKET CLUB.—A meeting of this club was held on Monday evening at tha Boar's Head Hotel. There were a large attendance. The Captain (Mr W. V. Howell Thomas) occupied the chair. It was resolved that the list of fixtures, as presented and arranged finally by the secretary (Mr D. H. R. Thomas) be printed. It was decided, on the pro- position of Mr W. H. Thomas, seconded by Mr J. H. Davies, that the club have an A team as well as a 1st XI, so that the younger members of the team may have the opportunity of playing in matches. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Secretary of the Laugharne Club, stating that that club's fixture would be played by the Carmarthen A team, if this arrangement was satisfactory to them. It was proposed by Mr Norton, seconded by Mr S. B. James, that Mr W. Viucent Morgan be appointed captain of tho "A" team. Mr J. Williams was appointed vice-captain. A commuication was read from the Secretary of the Carmarthenshire Cricket Leagues, asking them to become affiliated to the the league, but as all the league matches were to be played on Saturday, the local team found it impossible t.n ioin. THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF Miss BROWN."— Mr T B Thalberg's Company from Terry's Theatre, London, will pay a visit-to the Assembly Rooms, Carmarthen, on Thursday, May 2lst, and perform the latest great success, The Strange Adventures of Miss Brown." This play on its production in London won an immediate and emphatic success and sustained its popularity throughout one of the most trying theatrical seasons experienced in Londoiifor yeats past. The success of the piece has been so phenomenal in London and the i,ccs that companies have been orgfciiised for abroad, sa that there aie now no less than twelvo companies playing this gicat success. Its authors, Messig Robert Buchanan and Charles Marlowe, have hit on a curiously novel and whimsical idea, and this thej have developed with great skill. Their treatments indeed, of an admittedly rather hazardous theme is quite exceptionally fresh and exhilarating, mid absolutely icid of cfFtnce, so that all sorts snd conditions of playgoers, young and old, rich and poor, are flocking in all towns visited to enjoy the delightful humour of the piece, It is called new and original, and rightly so, seeing that nothing like these Strange Adventures have ever been seen before. The name of Miss Brown does not appear in ttc caste, yet she-or rather he-has a very impotent and very amusing part to play in a school of young ladies presided over by an old lady who is nothing if not tremendously proper. When we add that the company is under the direction of Mr W Pay.ie Seddon, whom we have to think for visits from such excellent pieces li "Xiobie and Jane," this should suffice to draw a full house. I GALLANT RESCUE ON THE QUAY. —A reacue from drowning took place en the Pothouse Quay on Wednesday evening, under circumstances of exceptional bravery. The fire brigade, under the command of Superintendent Smith, were exercising between the stores of Mr Thomas Jenkins and Messrs Spiller end Baker, when the Superintendent heard the cry raised that a child was in the water. There was a large siiid boat alongside snd the child was to be seen floating beside it. Immediately Griffith Lewis (" Griff Pencelly ") jumped into the water and caught hold of the child he sank twice, however, ar.d had to eventually releuc his hold of the little one. Harry Baskerville, one of the firemen, immediately jumped in, in his heavy fire- boots and other accoutrements, and at imminent risk to himself held the ch.11 up while he performed the exercise known to swimmers as treading water He managed to hold the little girl safely until the sand boat, which was then released from i'a moorings, had drifted down and fetched both rescuer and rescued f om, their perilous I osition. The little ten year old girl —Louie Gold, of Mill- gtreet We are glad to harn is now out of danger. It is to be hoped that suih a gal!cnt action as that of Mr Baskerville will not fail to be brought under the attention of the Humane Society to reccivj that public recognition which it so richly eleterves.
-----LLANDILO.
LLANDILO. DKI'ARTED ONES.—Seldom has Llandilo been thrown into such gloom as during the present week, conse- quent upon the death of one who was in the full Hush of manhood, and of another who was in the bright bloom of youth. After an illness of a couple of weeks' duration, Mr Den Lewis, draper, Compton House, was called hence on the [8th inst. Up to the day before his death, it was believed he was on a fair way to recovery, but the signs were deceptive, and to the intense surprise and deep sorrow of all who knew him, at an early hour on Thursday morning he was no more. He had only attained his thirty- third year, and leaves a widow and two children to mourn his loss. It is no idle formality tc say that the sympathy of the town has gone out towards her, for if her bruised spirits could be healed and annointed by it, then surely they would. His genial and happy disposition made him many friends, whilst his industry and geniality in business were marked traits in his character. His losi will be severely felt at the English Congregational Church, where his musical voice will be missed and how to fill the post of treasurer, which he held, will be a problem. The little church feels his death keenly, and of th's there were affecting manifestations at last Sunday morning's service. The large assemblage at his funeral, which took place at the Tabernacle on Monday, was of itstlf a proof of the respect entertained for him. Business houses were closed for the afternoon, and along the line of route to the churchyard blinds were every- where drawn.—To Mr and Mrs Williams, Medical Hall, the sympathy of the town has also gone out at the loss of their youngest daughter, at the early and promising age of 21. She had borne with patience a long and trying ilness, which terminated with death on the day following that of Mr Lewis, and thus Rhosmaen-street was in gloom. Miss i bright and cheery face will be missed in J circle, and amongst the society of her y y R friends. But so '« He giveth his beloved sleep. Her remains were interred on Tuesday in the 1 ans Churchyard. The floral offerings were numerous and chaste. —
