Husband and Lodger, c. ;
Husband and Lodger, c. Annie Evans, who until recently lived with her husband, Evan James, Evans, a demobilised soldier, in Cwmneol Place, Cwmaman, sum- moned him for desertion. She was represented by Mr. Edmunds, of the office of Messrs. William Thomas and Co.. solicitors, .Aberdare, and Mr. T. Marchant Harris was for the Oefencf. Mrs. Evans said that sl)e had bt < n married 12 years to the de- fondant, and that there were two children of the marriage-a girl of 1.0 and a. boy of 7 Her husband was discharged from the Army about five weeks ago, and she had had a bad time of it since his re- turn. He told he'- to clear out a-8 the result of a "row," in the course of which he charged her with being "bad with other men." She went away, taking the children and her clothes with her. In the mean- time, he wrote her two letters, in which he> said ho was prepared to pay 7s. a week towards the main- tenance of each of the little ones. Cross-examined by Mr. Harris, Mis. Evans stated that she kept, lodgers before her husband joined the Army. When he came home on leave in 1916, he taxed her with regard to certain rumours in the presence- of the lodger: It wa,s not true that she told him "she could sleep where she liked and with whom she liked." He turned out the lodger that night, but she allowed him to return after he had rejoined the Army. He had acted in a similar way several times be- fore. When he came home for good, he found the lodger in the house, but lie did not eject him that, night, but subsequently when he was drunk. She did not go away of her own a'i-ord. On Jaruary 7 last she wrote to him a letter, in which she stated, among other things, "Re- member this now. There is never welcome for you under the same roof as me as long as ] live": "whatever you do, never come to live with me again and "I shall leave the house as soon as you come home." The Stipendiary: You left lum a week after he came back ? Complainant: Yes, sir. The Stipendiary: Do you allege misconduct, Mr. Harris Mr. Harris: I suggest it, but a* ot prepared to go ii.to it now. point is that there has been lesertion, as she left of her ow accord. The defendant, giving his ston )n oath, said that he found th lodger in his house when he returne. in January 23rd last. He told he to clear out. but he did not do s< until the following night. He cam jack, however, and, on beill, asked to go away, he replied, "I an .ot going to clear out to please yot )r anybody else." So he "chuckec him out," and his wife said she ould go along with him. He asked M iss John to try to bring him ,-tel his wifo together, but Mrs aas replied, "1 don't want to s face no more." ¡It The Stipendiary: This woman i- .ot deserving of the slightest sym ,t,hy. During her husband's ah in the Army she behaved vor\ oolishly, and wrote 'him a mos «.cvoeative letter. There is not til; lightest proof of desertion. On ie contrary, it is clear, from th 0 oman's own evidence in Court o-day, that she had made up he:' amd to have her husband and she ft him because he would not let ier keep the lodger. We cannot dake an order hero. It was decided for arrangements o be made with regard to the care if the children.
