PUBLIC MEETING. — On r Wednesday evening, at the Aber- aman Workmen's Institute, an im- porfant public meeting was held convened by the Aberaman Horti- cultural Society to consider the action of the Food Production! De- partment in importing unfit seed potatoes into the district. Hie meeting was largely attended by prominent citizens of the locality, including Councillors George Powell, J.P., chairman* of the Aberdare District Council, and David Davies, Cwmbach. Air. E. D. Williams, chairman of the society, presided, in the absence of Councillor Joseph Martin. The chairman and the sec- retary, Air. Tom Evans, explained why the meeting was convened and of the attftude of the Food Pro- duction Department in importing such potatoes, which were unfit for planting. Councillors. G. Powell and David Davies Alessrs. 'Tom Bo wen, John Davies, gardener, Oaklands; J. H. Alorris, and several others strongly criticised the aetiøn of the Food Department, and urged chat their attention should be drawn to the matter immediately. Mr. Wolf, inspector of the Board of Agricul- ture, who was also present, ex- pressed his sympathy with the so-. ciety, and "fixed 'the responsi- bility upon the grower. He advised the society to tender a claim for compensation to tho Food Depart- nwnt, and forward specimens of the potatoes to Kew Gardens, London, in lio npnlvspd This murse was unanimously decided upon. Coun- cillor George Powell stated that the District Council would support the society in their action to the bitter end. Lloyd, 23, Pleasant Y iew, took place on Tuesday last at the Aberdare Cemetery. Deceased, who had been ailing for about five months, was at the local general hospital for a time. She passed away on the 9th inst. at the age of 25 years. She was a faith- ful member oi Hebron C.M., and was also a member of the Aberaman In- stitute Choir, since its inauguration. WAR LECTURES. — On Sunday afternoon and evening, Alajor Fox, D.S.O., delivered addresses at the Palace on his experiences as a pris- oner in Germany. The gallant officer thrilled his audience in recounting his personal hardships and Trhose of his brother officers and men. Mr J. Cunningham, Secretary of the Sea- men's Union proposed, and Air V. Brownrig'g Secretary of the British W orkers' League, seconded a vote of thanks to the lecturer, and Air Bert Richards, for his kindness in provid- ing the hall entirely free of charge. During the evening Mr Richards showed some fine pictures of the His- tory of the War. Air Gwilym Jones presided. The proceeds were given to the local fund for starving prisoners of war. NIXON'S FITTER DIKS. News has been received by Mr and Airs Walter Noot 20, Richmond Road, Alountain Ash, that son, Pte Walter Nq6ti Welsh Raiment, has died iu a French Hospital from wounds received in action. He was only 19 years of age, and in private life was employed in the fitting shop at Nixon'snffl^Sligation Colliery. He had been in the army about twehe months. FUNERAL.—-The iiiteiment of the remains of Airs Alargaiv; O-ant, Seb- astopol Villa, Camplielt Terrace, re- lict of the late Isaac Grant, took place in Caegarw Cemetery on Wed- nesday afternoon. Deceased was 81 years of age. Air Tom Narbett con- ducted a service at the house, and Rev T. J. Morgan read the burial ser- vice at the graveside. KILLED IN ACTION News has been received by Mr and Airs Wil- liams. St. Osytli, New Road, that their second son, Pte Walter Wil- liams, of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, has heell killed in action. Pte Wil- liams joined the forces on his eight- eenth birthday, and was a Lewis gunner of his coiuany. He went to .France about six months- ago and -had been reviously wounded. His elder brother, Staff Sergt Willie Wil- linms. of the Cardiff City Battalion, was in the same brigade as his bro- tlier., WELSH CHURCH. On Sunday afternoon a children's meeting was held in connection with the above Sunday School, over which the Rev John Williams (curate) presided. Songs were rendered by the follow- ing:—Iv. T. WELCOME HOME.—On the 15th inst, an entertainment was held at the Church Hall in honour of, >e Joseph Millar Gibbins. of the \v elsh Guards, who joined H.AL forces early in the war and'was wounded an I taken prisoner in the Battle of Loos, and after 2 years' captivity in Ger- many, was released in April of this year. Edwards, School House, in a concise speech presented the warrior with a Bible, Prayer Book and pocket jbook. A crowd of over 4,000 visited the Alountain Ash Recreation Grounds on Whit-Alonday, when a capital pro- gramme of amateur sports and cham- pionship tug of war took place in aid of the Mountain Ash Y.A1.C.A. Hut Fund. The event was patronised by Loru Aoyrdare and the leading resid- ents oi the town. At the close of the proetfedfugs his Jordsliip presented the magnificent cup to the captain of the victorious Cwmpennar Team, and con- gratulated them upon their fine dis- play. ne success of the event is largely due to the untiring energies of Air. Wilt- shire, Abercynon; 2nd. Henry Lewis, Pont:, poMJ 3rd, A. Rudge, Pontypool. One Alile Cycle Handicap: 1st, W. Dyer, Cefripennar; 2nd, R. Jones, Cefn- pennar 3rd, P. Palmer, Aberaman. The event of the day was the Tug-of- War championship, The first teams to hold the rope were Cwmpennar P.D. A. and Cwmdare and All Whites, Cwmpark. Both teams are unbeaten, and a tremendous struggle took place. The fact that the first pull occupied fully 2o minutes speaks for the ten- acity of the competitors. Cwmpennar, however, won both pulls, and the Cwm- park team sport in gly acknowledged that, liiey were defeated by a superior team. Nixon's A. also proved formid- able opponents, but in the final were easily beaten by the Cwmpennar team. The result was: 1st. Cwmpennar P.D. A., prize, £ o, and the magnificent challenge cup, given by Lord Aber- dare 2nd, Nixon's A.. 3rd, Pontar- dulais.
