Morgan deposed that the defendants were racing and refused to siop when he called them. Williams and Welsford gave the wrong names and addresses.—Those two were fined 1.5s. each, and Davies 10s./ Dogs.-J ames Thomas, Aberdare, was ordered- to pay 5s. for leaving his dog out at night, and a similar amount for neglecting to have a collar on it.—Thomas said that a collar had been placed oji the dog, but someone had stolen it.—David Morgan, Trecynon, had to pay 5s: for not having a collar on his dog. Horse Mystery Solved.- Wilham O'Brien, Merthyr, a rag and bone collector, was brought up in custody charged with stealing a horse, cart, 10s. in cash, and a quantity of china, the property of Noah Godgen, mar- ine store dealer, Aberdare.—Godgen said he lived at 47 Seymour Street. Aberdare, and his stores were at the rear of the Iron Bridge Hotel. On Monday, .June 25th, he lent a horse and cart, etc., to prisoner, to col- lect rags. Prisoner was supposed to return the same evening, but did not do so. The cart had been re- turned when the case was partly heard last week, but the horse could not be found. Witness had since seen the horse at the Pound, Twyn- yrodyn Merthyr. It was valued £ 22.—B. R. Brown said he was the son of Wm. Brown, marine store dealer, Merthyr. On the night of June 25th prisoner sold rags to his father and asked him to stable a horse until the morning. O'Brien paid 2s. for stabling it. Next morn- ing, when O'Brien called, the horse had disappeared.—Cecil Jones, son of the farmer occupying Galon-udhaf Farm, Merthyr, deposed to seeing a strange horse on the field on Thurs- day, June 28th. He took it to the pound and left it in charge of the pound-keeper. The horse had since been identified as Godgen's horse.— P.C. Moiro, Abernant, proved ar- resting prisoner.—The Bench dis- charged prisoner, the Stipendiary holding that so far as the horse was concerned that feature of the sum- mons fell to the ground. With re- gard to the china he had disposed of it in a business-like fashion. He (the Stipendiary) blamed Brown more than O'Brien, who was drunk when he returned to Merthyr and disposed of the rags. < Row in a Back-Yard. David Evans, a middle-aged man, sum- moned a boy named Jenkin Thomas, Aberaman, for indecent language. Mr. W. Thomas appeared for Evans and Mr T. W. Griffiths for the de- fendant.—Complainant said his step- daughter was out in the hack-yard and defendant behaved in a vulgar fashion.. Witness went out and de- fendant then used bad language to- wards him. Evans' step-daughter confirmed the evidence.—The boy, who attends the Open-air School, admitted using bad language.—Mrs Kosfc Ettery, a neighbour, gave evi- 11 1 dence for the defence.—There was a cross-summons for assault against David Evans. Mrs. Ruth Thomas, the boy's mother, of 2844 Cardiff Road, said that David Evans was her next-door neighbour. When she interfered between Evans and her boy, Evans struck her a blow in the chest, and caught hold of her throat.—Mrs. Mary Bradshavv, 28;5a Cardiff Road, gave corroborative evi- (-Ieiiee.-Foi- the defence, Dd. Evans, his wife, and daughter gave evi- dence, and Mrs. Rees and Mrs Thomas gave further evidence for complainant. David Evans was fined 10s. and costs and bound over to keep the peace, for assaulting Mrs. Thomas. The boy Jenkin Thomas was discharged with a caution. Desertion.—Wm. Henry Owen, 7 Aberaman Houses, Aberaman, was summoned by his wife, Frances E. Owen, for desertion. Mr. W. Thomas represented the wife and Mr. T. W. Griffiths the husband.— Mrs. Owen said they had been mar- ried 19 months. There was one child about 12 months old. On June 12th lgst he came home at 10 p.m. in a drunken state. He called the baby nasty names and told her to clear out of his way. He threw a line-full of clothes to the ground, threatened her with a chair; smashed the crockery and threw the baby's carriage about. On the next day he ordered her to pack up the furniture, and a Jew came to fetch it, leaving only one bedstand. He even took the key to the owner of the house, Mrs. Roberts, and she was left 'with no option but to go home to her parents. He had only paid her 10s. since she left.—Cross- examined by Mr. Griffiths, complain- ant admitted having contracted a few debts because she did. not have sufficient itnoney to live on. The most she had was about £ 3 10s. in one week and £ 1 1*1 s. was the least.—Asked what his defence was, Mr. Griffiths said he understood her mother had interfered and wanted them to separate.—Complainant de- nied this.—Mr. Griffiths said the wife did not get up in the mornings to prepare breakfast for her husband to go to work. Stipendiary: No woman is perfect. She may have been a poor wife, but it was no justification for the husband to break up the home. Defendant's average earnings were £3 9s. 2d., and an order of 30s. a week and costs was made.
A Drunken Freak. - Aberaman…
A Drunken Freak. Aberaman Woman's Struggle. AVm. Davies, 12 Glamorgan St., Aberaman, for whom Mr. \V. i. Howell appeared, was charged with attempting to indecently assault a, married woman named Mary Bowen, 39 Glamorgan Street.—Mrs. Bowen -aid her husband was in the Army, and she had four children. On the night of July 9th she was in the house with a neighbour, named Maggie Davies, when they heard a knock. She heard a man's voice, which she did not recognise. Maggie Davies left, and shortly afterwards someone knocked again. She said: "Come in and stop your nonsense," chinking it was her brother. De- lendant then came in, his face bleeding, and his clothes covered with time. He was drunk. She asked him what was the^matter, and offered to wash his face, and told him he had better go home. He stepped nearer to her and pushed her on a chair and placed his arms round her neck. She struggled with him and shoved him off and he fell. She made a rush to the door and she asked him if he was mad, adding: I suppose you know Evan (her husband) is not here." He prevent- ed her from going out, and she caught hold of a knife from the table and said: "I will stick you with this if you don't let me pass." He then went out and she ran to the next house. When she and her neighbour returned the prisoner had gone. By Air. Howell: She knew the prisoner very well, and they had been brought up together. He was mad drunk. Stipendiary Nothing more than what you have said, took placed Complainant: No, sir. Stipendiary Then the charge will lie reduced to one of common as.sa ult. Air. Howell said that his client was mad drunk. He had met a soldier friend home from the Front, and had been drinking liquor, which he was not accustomed to. His client was very sorry for what had happened. The Stipendiary said the Bench were satisfied it was a drunken freak. He was glad to see that Da\ ies was sorry for what hafi hap- pened. He would be fined 20s. and 25s. costs. Maintenance—John Phillips, Tre- cynon, tor whom his wife appeared, was summoned for the non-pavment of a sum of £ 3 8s. 6d. due to the Merthyr Union for the maintenance or his late father. Mrs. Phillips said her husband was prepared to pay if given time,, but an order was made for payment forthwith". Fcod Controller's Orders Moses Beechani, grocer, High Street, Aber- dare, was summoned (1) for selling peas at a price higher than that re- \1 cognised by the Food Controller's Order, 1917, and (2) for selling peas other than my weight.—Mr. W. R. Morgan (clerk) prosecuted for the District Council. He said that, in i ornmoii justice to the defendant, he might mention that a deputation had waited on the Food Controller at a date ulterior to that of t he Order in question. The result was that the time of the Order was ex- tended to next "August, although the prices originally fixed were to --N,lati(I Rogers, of the local Isolation Hospital, said she asked for a pound of peas. The attendant took a packet from a shelf, and poured the contents into a bag. They, weighed 7l ounces, and a sum of (id. was paid.—Defendant plead- ed that the sale had been effected contrary to his orders.—In fining the defendant 10s. in respect of each offence, the Stipendiary said that both offences had been committed. George J* Davies, grocer, Cardiff ltyad. Aberaman, aita-his assistant, Cordelia Thomas, were summoned for selling peas other than by weight.—Mr. T. W. Griffiths defend- ed .—Dewi Davies, a clerk in the employ of the Council, said lie called at defendant's shop in order to buy a pound of peas. Instead he was supplied with a bag weighing ounces.—This case was adjourned for a week.
