J 1 u Aberdare Education !…
J 1 u Aberdare Education Committee. On Wednesday, June 21st. Present: ¡ Mr. E. Ogwen Williams (chairman), Mr Idwal Thomas (vice-chairman), Mrs. Davies, Messrs. T. Walter Williams Wm. Rees, J.P., John Griffiths, David Davies, Thomas Lloyd, Evan Jones (Aberaman), Wm. Lawrence, D. E. Davies, John Evans and E. Stonelake, with Mr. T. Botting (director) and Mr. T. D. Jones (assistant director). TEACHERS AND THE WAR. The Staff and Management Committee reported as follows: -Present: Mrs. F. R. Davies (in the chair), Councillors D. E. Davies, T. W. Griffiths, E. Ogwen Williams, John Evans, Illtyd Hopkins, T. Lloyd, and T. Walter Williams. Enlistment of Teachers.—Letters were read from the Board of Education with reference to the Committee's appeals for the exemption of 11 married teachers who had attested. The Board pointed out that they could not grant total exemp- tion, but that instructions had been given to the Recruiting Officer asking him not to call up Messrs. P. D. Davies, D. H. Parry, and T. J. Lewis without reference to the Board. The Board fur- ther stated that they did not consider that postponement could be justified in the cases of Messrs. D. Griffiths, T. Davies, D. E. Wigley, E. W. Thomas, John Davies, E. A. Bowen, E. D. Hum- phreys, and H. H. Morris.—The Director asked for general instructions as to whether the Committee wished to appeal, for married teachers who had recently attested, or who would come under the terms of the new Military Service Act. After discussion it was resolved that the Director be instructed to appeal to the Board of Education in the case of all married teaches who agreed to this course and who underwent the necessary medical examination.—It was reported that Mr. Shelby James, who had been passed as medically fit for home service and would not be called up without reference to the Board of Education, now applied for permission to join His Majesty's Forces.—It was resolved that in view of the fact that Mr. James would be called up when required, the Committee considered that he was, for the present, of more use in school, and, therefore, refused the application. Director's Report of Staffing.-The Director made a report on the condition of the school staffs on May 16th. The following is a brief summary of the re- port —(a) Thirty-two teachers have joined H.M. Forces, and six more will be called up before the end of the Whitsun holidays, (b) In four depart- ments the staffs are more than 80 per cent. above the minimum standard of the Board of Education; in eight de- partments between 60 per cent. and 80 per cent. above standard; in 28 depart- ments from 40 per cent. to 60 per cent. above; in seven departments from 20 1per cent. to 40 per cent. above, and in I two departments less than 20 per cent. above. The two last mentioned will be strengthened on or before June 1st. (c) Nine head teachers are now responsi- ble for classes in addition to seven who were so responsible in pre-war times. Staff Changes.—The following resigna- tions were reported:-Miss Edith Wil- liams. Blaengwawr School; Miss E. Mackintosh, Blaengwawr School; Miss M. C. O'Reilly, Roman Catholic School. Appointments.—It was reported that Miss Arianwen Rees and Miss S. N. Wil- liams had accepted the appointments offered them by the Committee, but Miss Lilian Rees had declined.-The Director reported that in the Chairman's absence he had consulted the ex-Chairman and appointed the two best qualified appli- cants on the remaining list to fill the vacanies caused by the withdrawal of Miss Rees and the resignation of Miss Williams, viz., Miss M. M. Llewelyn, Cwmaman, and Miss C. Walker, Aber- aman, both of whom had accepted.—The appointments were unanimously con- firmed. I Application.—The Director stated that he had received an application for ap- pointment from a married certificated woman teacher, formerly in the Com- mittee's service, whose husband, also a teacher, would soon be called up.—After discussing the circumstance of the case it was resolved that the application be not I entertained. Parents' Day. — The Director re- ported upon the proposal to institute a Parents' Day in the schools, and recom- mended that the suggestion be not acted upon the present time, but that the matter should be left to the discretion of Head Teachers. He also pointed out II that several Head Teachers had ar- ranged for parents to visit the schools after the St. David's Day celebrations with very good results.—It was resolved that no action be taken in the matter at present. Date of Holidays.—It was resolved that the schools should close for the Midsummer Holidays at noon on Friday, July 28th, and reassemble on Monday, August 28th, and that the Autumn Mid- Term Holiday be fixed for Friday and Mondav, October 13th and 16th. SCHOOL DENTIST. It was re- ported that Mr. J J. Musgrave, Ex- mouth, had been appointed joint school dentist for Mountain Ash and Aberdare. The Director now stated that the dentist would be provisionally appointed for three months, and subject to his work being satisfactory, and subject to the confirmation of the Board of Education, Mr. Musgrave would be temporari.y appointed to the post till the end of the war. STAFF CHANGES. The Director re- ported that since the last meeting tte following teachers had left their posts in order to join the Army:—Ivor Ec- wards, E. D. Humphreys, G. E. WL- liams, E. W. Thomas, J. Davies, D. H. Davies, W. G. Morgan, H. H. Morris, J. T. James. This made a total of 36 teach- ers who had joined the Army. A HARD CASE.—The Director re- ported that he was in receipt of a lette; from a relative of Oswald T. Davies Aman School, asking the committee tt support an application for his exemp. tion or postponement from military ser. vice, on the ground that exceptional sacrifices had been made to give him education. Davies was 18 years of agE last November.—The Chairman asked if the committee had appealed for any teachers.—Director We have not ap- pealed for any single men, nor have we made an appeal to the Board of Educa- tion for single men. — Mr. Idwal Thomas Has anyone asked us to appeal for him--Director: No. Mr. Idwal Thomas was in favour of supporting the appeal, but ultimately the matter was left to the Tribunal. R.C. SCHOOL.—The Director report- ed that Miss Catherine Connolly had. been appointed in the place of Miss O'Reilly.—Mrs. Davies: An old Aber-. dare County School girl. ST. FAGAN'S. Rev. Richard Jones, Vicar of St. Fagan's, wrote that Mr. B. Jarman, headmaster of St. Fagan's School, had tendered his resignation, and he (the Vicar) was advertising for a successor.—Mr. W. Lawrence: Is there- a dearth of capable teachers locally?— The Director thought it was the inten- tion of the managers to appoint a teach- er at present in the service of the com- mittee.—Mr. T. Walter Williams ob- served that for a long time past there had been an unhappy dispute between Council Schools and Church Schools. Now if the managers would accept a local teacher for promotion, it would certainly be a means of closing a vexed question. No harm would be done if a resolution to that effect would be passed. The Director could write a letter, with the approval of the chairman, to be sent to the Vicar of St. Fagan's. The present position was that the committee would not recognise the seniority of a man for promotion, if he were appointed by the managers of a Church School. Now, if the managers would appoint a local man, it should be understood that that man would take his position at the proposed new Gadlys School. He moved that such a letter be written.—Mr. Idwal Thomas seconded, and the motion was agreed to. TWO COUNTY SCHOOL SCHOLARS —The Director called attention to two brilliant girls who had passed their senior examination at the local County School before they were 16. They were- Gwladys Evans and Dorah White. If the former applied for a bursar it would. be necessary for her to sit for her sen- ior examination three times.—Mr. T. Walter Williams remarked that the war had made it impossible to carry on special classes which such girls as the two mentioned required.—Mrs. Davies moved that posts be found for them under the Education Committee.—This course was adopted. SUMMER SCHOOLS—The Educa- tion Committee are granting 5 scholar- ships to the following, to attend Barry Summer School:—Miss Palmei, Miss, Henry, Abernant; Miss Tay, Abernant; Miss Rees, Open Air; and Miss Morgan, Cwmbach. The County Council are j granting nine scholarships to local teachers to attend the same school. The Director said there was only one applicant for a scholarship for the Welsh Summer School, and that was Miss Elizabeth Jones, Hirwain. TO-DAY AND TO-MORROW.—This- was the title of a book, copies of which were sent to members to peruse.—Mrs. Davies suggested that the Director- prepare a report on it, and that the I matter be placed on the agenda, for the first meeting after the holidays. Mem- bers might be able to read it during their holidays. Mr. T. Walter Wil- liams: The Director might prepare a Child's Guide out of it. (Laughter.) SALARIES. Applications for in- creased salaries were received from the Clerk of Works and Attendance Officers, and they were referred to the Finance- Committee.

A Cosmo went through a Fagin drill the other day. He lost a gold watch and chain, with the light of day stream- ing into his optics. He got the valu- able back very shortly. He has now taken to wearing the cellar-flap chain. A Mount man has terrible flights of fancy, and has had aspiration for the air service. When at Cardiff he was asked what particular arm of the ser- vice he would like to, enter he replied, "I would like to be a radiator." The Sergt. Major went hot and cold in turn. Matters are not running very smooth- ly between the higher authorities of the Cottage Hospital and the work- men's representatives. At a meeting of the Joint Committee (Taff & Cynon) it was mentioned how highly unsatis- factory was the existing state of affairs.
