Aberdare Tribunal.
Aberdare Tribunal. On Wednesday, June 14th. Present: Mr. Chas. Kenshole (chairman), Mrs. Davies, Councillors George Powell, W. M. Llewelyn, T. Walter Williams, Wm. Rees, J.P., Joseph Martin, with Major F. N. Gray, J.P., and Sergt. Major Johns (military representatives), Mr. W. H. Morgan (clerk), Mr. A. Watkins (deputy clerk), and Mr. John Howell and Mr John James, Aberaman, as agricultural advisers. General Farm Servant. The first case was S. Morgan Price, 4 Dumfries St., Aberdare. Married and 4 children. Employed by Mr. D. P. Davies, J.P., Ynyslwyd. Mr. Griffith T. Davies, solicitor, appealed on his be- half, and gave details of the work per- formed by Price. In reply to Major Gray, Mr. G. T. Davies said the man had been employed at Ynyslwyd for 14 years. He had been absent a few times, but not for a long period. It was easy to get help for a day or two, but not for a week or a month.—Post- poned till the end of July (final). Monumental Mason and Farmer. Herbert P. Williams, Brecon Road, Hirwain, monumental mason, and en- gaged on farm work as well. The father appealed, and said they had 15 acres of land, 4 of which were used for grow- ing hay. The hay would be cut next month, and it was impossible to obtain assistance. The Tribunal had already granted two postponements. Postponement was now made to July 31st (final). Abernant Shepherd. Thomas Wm. Fowler, 28 years of age, employed by Mrs. Martha Davies, Gwr- hyd Farm, Abernant. Mrs. Davies ap- pealed for him. She said she had 152 acres, 63 acres hay growing. Her stock was 10 cows, 6 horses, and 400 sheep. One of her two men was ex- clusively employed in driving house coal for the P.D. Co. In leaving the room applicant said: "I can't live without Fowler." Members of the Tribunal said there were not nearly 400 sheep on the farm, but thought the case strong enough without any exaggeration on the part of applicant. Six months postpone- ment were granted. Clarke's the Man. Louis S. Clarke, Aberdare (married), appealed for exemption. In his appeal form he stated that he was manager of the Aberdare, Pontypool and Llanelly Cinemas. Over 33 persons were em- ployed, and with the exception of two men, about to be called up, all were in- eligibles or women. If he had to go to the Army the business would suffer and it would take a new man a long time to learn the work. Mr. Kenshole: Well, I suppose people even in these times require a little di- version. This is a very large under- taking. What does the military repre- sentative say? Major Gray: He seems to be in a controlling position of a big concern. It is not a matter of one Cinema, but of 3 or 4. Mr. George Powell: He is The Man. (Laughter.) Applicant and his legal representa- tive, Mr. W. R. Edmunds, Merthyr, were called in. Mr. Edmunds stated that they paid a large sum of money in rates and Government taxes. Six months postponement were granted. As the applicant retired Mr. John Howell remarked Clarke's the mail." (Laughter.) Sheep, Maggots and Water. Wm. Davies, Hendre Bailey Farm, near Llwydcoed. His father applied, and in the statement of his case said his son was fully employed. A river ran through his land into the reservoir, and if sheep died and got maggoty on the side of the river, the domestic water at Aberdare would not be very nice. (Laughter.) The father was called in, and asked to be allowed to speak in Welsh. Mr. Kenshole thereupon examined him in Welsh at some length. Postponement for six months was granted. Must Make Arrangements. Leonard Slocombe, Bryngwyn Farm, near Hirwain, who appeared with his father, said he w&s engaged as coal haulier and farm hand. The father said that applicant was the only son at home. He was 25 years of age. The Chairman said that other men in similar businesses had found men above military age to haul coal. Postponement till August 14th to enable him to make arrangements for another man. Sent to Medical Board. Dr. T. W. Scale appealed for Have- lock Jones, deputy registrar of births and deaths. The application was sup- ported by Mr. Frank T. James, Mer- thyr. Adjourned to enable Jones to go be- fore the Medical Board. Mr. Geo. Powell told Dr. Scale that the case would not be prejudiced if Jones passed the Board. Milk vendors. John Jones, Bryn Terrace, Cwmdare. Married, no children. Buying milk from 3 farms-about 35 gallons a day. The applicant having retired, some members thought a woman could do the work. Ultimately three months post- ponement was granted. Gomer Jones, milk vendor, Godre- aman, was also granted 3 months, and was ordered to go before the Medical Board. Adjourned. Three persons employed in farming work for the P.D. Co. The applications were made by the Company, and Mr. John James, Aberaman Farm, gave particulars. The applications were adjourned to enable Mr. James to give details to Major Gray of all the men employed in farming work. Medical Board. Howell W. Nicholas, Trecynon, milk vendor and farm assistant. Met with a serious accident in 1906 and still suffering from its effects. Referred to Medical Board. Tramways. Mr. A. J. Abraham appealed for two assistant firemen and two motormen who were teaching others to drive. Conditional exemption for 6 months was granted the former two and the other two cases were adjourned. A report of another meeting of the Tribunal, held on Friday evening, will be found in page 6.
