Aberdare Police Court. 4 Wednesday, April 19th.-Befoi-e Messrs R. A. Griffith (Stipendiary), Col. M. Morgan, F. W. Mander, J. H. Powell and J. O. George. New Magistrate. Mr. W. H. Morgan, Clerk to the Aberdare District Council, introduced to the Bench Mr. J. O. George, the new chairman of the District Council. Stipendiary I beg to congratulate Mr George on his election as chairman of tlf District Council, and to welcome him to the Bench. Mr. George was then sworn in as a magistrate. Drunks.—Wm. Evans, Wm. Nicholas, and Frederick Palmer, 13s. each. Indecent Language.—Samuel Davies, using had language in Gadlys Road, 9s.; David Elias, making use of bad language towards his father in Gadlys, fined 12s.-P.C. Banks gave evidence in each case. Unlicensed Gun. Albert Leach, Trecynon, for whom Mr T. W. Griffiths appeared, answered a summons for having a gun in his posses- sion without a proper licence. P.C. Jones deposed that he met de- fendant in Wellington Street, Roberts- town. He had a sporting rifle and wit- ness asked him if he had a licence. De- fendant replied No. I hope you won't report me. 1 have only just got mar- ried. I have had plenty of trouble. (Laughter in Court.) You can have -the gun if you say nothing about it. In reply to Mr. Griffiths witness said he calletl in defendant's house regarding a dog licence, hut he did not mention anything then about the gun. Leach gave evidence, stating that the constable called at his house re a dog licence, and asked him outside, and spoke about a gun. Witness replied that it was simply a sporting rifle, and that the ironmonger from whom he "bought it told him no licence was re- quired. He used the rifle to shoot rats in the back garden. He had now re- moved to Trecynon and had no further use for the rifle. He had practically sold it to a man named Lambert. Thomas Lambert having given evi- dence the Bench said they were not satisfied with the evidence and the case would be dismissed. Unlicensed Dogs. Miriam Billing- ham, Aberdare, 2s. 6d. Margaret Woodcliffe, Aberdare, who said the dog was now dead, fined 2s. 6d.; Florence Marshall, 2s. 6d.; Mary Ann Davies, Cwmbach, 2s. 6d.; Elizabeth Harvey, Cwmbach, adjourned for 14 aays; Mar- garet Morris, Abercwmboi, 2s. 6d. Alleged Carnal Knowledge. Aberaman Shop Manager Committed to the Assizes. Archibald Townsend, Aberaman, was brought up on a charge of carnally knowing a girl 14 years of age. Mr. W. T. Howell defended. Martha Jane Pike, 5 Lower Street, Aberaman, said she was 14 years of age. She was in service with Servini, 22h Lewis Street, Aberaman, and was in the habit of going home to sleep. Servini had a fish and chip shop at 30 Lewis Street, which was managed by Towns- end, the defendant. On Saturday, April loth, Mrs. Servini went out and left her In charge of the baby. At 3.30 she went to No. 30 Lewis Street for potatoes, which were lrept in the cellar. Townsend was in the cellar v. nen she went in. She told him that she wanted some potatoes. While she was remov- ing potatoes he made improper sug- gestions to her, and she threatened to fetch the police. He then proceeded to molest her, and she tried to struggle and scream. He afterwards asked her not to tell anyone. When she went back to 22b Lewis Street, Mrs. Servini was not there. She took the baby with her and went down to her fitness ) mother, and told her. She and her mother went to 30 Lewis Street. Her mother asked Townsend what he had done, and he laughed and sneered and .said it was only a bit of f™- Her mother thereupon caught hold ot a jar and threw it at him. It did not hit him. On the previous day he had tried to interfere with her, but the baby, which she carried, began to cry. By Mr. W. T. Howell: The back door of the kitchen was open when the offence occurred. Mrs. Laundry's backyard was close by. She did not know whether the people in Mr. Owen's backyard next door, or Mrs. Laundry's, could have heard her when she scream- ed.. Mrs. Catherine A. Pike produced her daughter's birth certificate. She was 14 in January last. Last Saturday, about o p.m., her daughter came home. I r_1 She seemed very upset, and made a complaint to her. They afterwards went up together and saw prisoner. When spoken to he sneered, said he had done no harm, ancLthat it was only fun. She lost her temped and threw a jar at him. It missed him and broke to pieces against the wall. She then went up to Servini's shop. By Mr. W. T. Howell: Town send did not mention anything about a doctor. M. Servini said that Mrs. Pike made a complaint to him. He went to see Townsend, who said he had done no harm. Emily Stonelake, wife of James Stonelake, 43 Gladstone Street, Aber- aman, said that prisoner had been lodg- ing with her for several years. Wm. Geo. James, collier, IS Victoria Street, Miskin, said that Martha J. Pike was his half-sister. He spoke to prisoner about the offence. Dr. Moffitt and P.S. Griffiths gave further evidence. The former said there were no marks of violence, Prisoner was committed to take his trial at the Assizes, bail being allowed. prisoner in a sum of R;50 and two others in similar amounts.—M. Servini and Charles Davies, Cynon Street, were accepted as sureties. Conscientious Objectors. Handed Over to Military Escorts. i Seven young men from Mountain Ash appeared in answer to a charge oi being absentees from the Army Reserve, and failing to report themselves when noti- fied. Tucker, baker; John Joseph Beckerlegge, school teacher; Geo. J. Neighbour, dental mechanic; Stanley Minor, insurance agent; Hugh Powell and Walter Rees, dental assistants. Before any evidence was offere(I the Rev. George Neighbour, father of one of the defendants, handed a letter (from a solicitor) to the Stipendiary, who, having read it, said they could not ae- cede to the request. Sergt. Major Johns gave evidence, and, the case of Griffiths was taken first. Witness deposed that notice was served on Griffiths on the Gth inst. to appear at 9 a.m. on the ]'It h inst. at the Recruiting Office. He did not appear. —Asked if he had anything to say, de- fendant said: "I am stili a conscien- tious objector. Stipendiary: We have absolutely nothing at all to do with that. We fine you the minimum amount of 40s., and you will be handed over to the military authorities. Similar evidence was given in xho case of Tuel-er.-This defendant made a statement that he did attend the Rv- cruiting Office to ask for an extension cf tinip., because he intended appealing further. Clerk Did the County Appeal Tri- bunal give you leave to appeals Tucker proceeded to state what Mr. Walter Long, President of the L.G.B., had said. The bench lined defendant 40s. and handed him over to a military escort. In the case of Beckerlegge the defend- ant said it had been laid dmynlt that conscientious objectors were to be given work of national importance. He was an elementary schooi-teacher, and he contended that that was work of na- tional importance. Fined 40s. and handed over to the military authorities. A similar order was made in the case of Neighbour, Minor, Powell and Rees, and the seven defendants were con- ducted by the police downstairs. Later in the day military officers from Cardiff arrived and took charge of the seven men. They left by the 3.50 p.m. train for Cardiff, where they will be medically examined, and if passed, transferred to some unit of the Armv. A Legal Point. Mr J. D. Thomas mentioned the case of Private Dd. Daniel Williams, who had been summoned by Edith May Perriss, to show cause, etc The case had been tried before in March, 1915, by the Stipendiary and Mr D. W. Jones, when it was dismissed. The defendant came home on a few days' leave last week, and he was served with a sum- Mons He (Mr. Thomas) maintained that the service of the summons was invalid, isasmuch as the defendant was ".in the Army operating over the seas in France. Stray Dog.-For allowing her dog to, be out at night, Margaret Head, Hir- wain, was ordered to pay 2s. 6d. Mrs. Read I have been a widow far eight years, as Mr. J. O. George knows very well. The dog is the only company I've j got." (Laughter.) j Poor Law Claim.-Francis Matthews j owed £ 5 4s. to the Guardians on an order to pay 4s. weekly towards the J maintenance of his mother. He was a single man, a mason, earning lOid. per hour.—Llewelyn Hichards, warrant offi- cer, gave evidence, and an order to pay forthwith was made. ¡ No Better Than Brothel." j Sad Revelations of an Abernant Home. Elizabeth Price, 5 Tydraw Place, Abernant, was charged with neglecting her four children. Mr. T. Marchant Harris, from 'the office of Mr. V/. Thomas, prosecuted for the N.S.P.C.C. Mr. Harris said that defendant was the wife of Thomas Price, who was at pres- ent in the Army. She had four chil- dren, two by a former husband and two by her present husband. She obtained 14s. a month compensation in respect of first husband, who met with i accident, and she also obtained 25s. a week separation allowance in respect of her present husband- She lived in a two-roomed house, for which she paid lis. per month. The officer of the Society had had her under observation for three years, and she had been warn- ed 19 times. Since her husband went to the Army she had been going from

I The Giory of Trench Life. I Appended are extracts from a letter received by Guardian D. J. Phillips from Corporal Ehvs G. James, Cardiff Pals, formerly at the Cwmbach Branch of the Co-op. Society:—"I find that the new drafts sent out here includes some of our shop lads. The first two I met here were Jim Thorney and James from the office, and yesterday I saw t Morgan David Williams, of Cwmaman Shop. 1 wouldn't have known him had he not shouted my name. He looked the picture of health. He has been drafted to the Swanseas, and Jim Thorney and James to the Rhonddas. I guess that by the time you receive this epistle they will have been well ducked into trench life. "Oh, what a glorious life!" I left Dan Hughes, Brook Street, Aberaman, about an hour ago. He's in the pink after 16 strenuous days in the mud heap, but Evan Mor- gan, Jubilee Road, is not so well. He's troubled with water on the knee, but hopes to be quite alright again in a few days. Time is very limited to be sick out here. 1 would like you to be here now just to hear these little guns of ours going :}wl1 for leather/ I guess some are going for a long rest this very mo- ment. It's 12 p.m.. so T think I had better- toddle off for a few hours' comfort in our so-called feather beds. Bou jour. It is raining awfully, but really we must not complain as we have had jolly good weather lately. Give my kindest re- gards to all the boys in the shop.—Rhys." j j.

Haggar's, Aberdare. i J_ NEXT WEEK: "MA KIT AN.A f The crowds around Councillor Haggar's place this week testify in beter words than type could possibly display that the attraction is something extraordinary. Of course, Mr. Haggar knew that "The Christian would be an immense draw, but he didn't dream that he would have to apologise for short accommodation. ''Be wise in time" runs the old song. Get there j early, for it is worth "a. visit" in the truest sense of the word. It is being shown this Thursday, Friday, and isat day-, after which Mr. Haggar re- luctantly announces its withdrawal. The great holiday programme is most won- derful, "Maritana," founded on Wall- ace's world-famed opera of the same name, will be screened. It is a delight- ful picture, and the gallant Don Jose is splendidly depicted. Another of Mr. Haggar's great engagements is that of Billy Merson, who features the comedv part in "The Terrible Tee." Billy is freely acknowledged to be the rival of Charlie Chaplin, but there, the specta- tor will judge. Billy is not Charlie and vice versa, but there the spectator will judge. Most spectators do and Billy gets marvellous audiences. The "Ex- ploits of Elaine" will proceed to the next episode. Mr. Haggar announces coming shortly "The Circus of Death."

ABERCYNON. SERVICES. On Sunday and Monday the anniversary service of Moriah English Baptist Chapel were held. Ser- mons were delivered by the Rev. A. Bowen Morgan, A.T.S., Birkenhead. The Rev. D. Griffiths Millar, pastor, con- ducted the service, and solos were con- tributed by Miss May and Miss Maggie Evans. Mr. W. Thomas, F.V.C.M., presided at the organ, and choruses were rendered by the church choir under the conduetorship of M- r T. J. Thomas. "MARITANA" PERFORMANCE. •- On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights last three excellent performances of the grand opera in three acts, en- titled "Maritana. I Aberdare Woman gets Divorce. Sequel to a Bigamy Charge. Alleged desertion, adultery, and; bigamy were the grounds on which a • decree nisi was granted in the Divorce Court on Monday to Mrs. Eliza Davies, Stinnvbank Street, Aberdare, against her husband. rr. Cecil Hayes, for the petitioner, said the case was before the Court in January last, and adjourned for further evidence as to the handwriting on the register of the bigamous marriage be- ing that of the respondent, Thomas Davies. It appeared that Mrs. Davies married the respondent, a cashier, at the Merthyr Register Office. Respond- ent left his wife in 1900, and it was not until 1013 that petitioner discovered him at Tumble, Llaneily. She then dis- covered that he had gone through a form of marriage in 1903 with another woman, and there had been one child of that marriage. In. 1913 respondent was tried for bigamy at Carmarthen Assizes, but was acquitted on the plea that he had not seen or heard of his wife for seven years. Petitioner and her husband had lived together at Llwydcoed and Aberdare, and there were three children. A separation order on the ground of desertion was grant- ed to petitioner in February, 1913, and an order made for the payment cf 7s C) (I per week, but not a penny did petitioner receive.—Counsel read an affidavit from Mr. Daniel Edwards, clerk to the Super- intendent Registrar at Carmarthen, who said that Daniel Davies and Hees went through a form of marriage at his office in August, 1903. and in February ) last Mrs. Eliza Davies, the present petitioner, inspected the register con- taining the record of the marriage and identified the signature of Daniel Davies as the handwriting of Thomas Davies, the respondent in the present case.-An ffi r-1, I I affidavit from the petitioner confirmed I the latter statement.—A decree nisi was granted with costs. Griffiths, Aberdare, deposed to visiting the premises late one night, and finding women and men there. He could see beer flagons on the table, and he saw defendant sitting on a man's knee. He watched the people inside, and lie was satisfied that there was im- moral conduct there. He heard the children crying in bed. Stipendiary: It goes very much against our feelings to separate children from their mother and to break up a home. It is clear that this house is hardly better than a brothel, and the woman is a confirmed drunkard. Two months hard labour. When defendant heard the sentence she swooned and was carried downstairs by the police. Transfer Mr. Rees Thomas applied for the transfer of the Crown Hotel, Aberdare, from the late Rees Thomas to his widow.—Granted. Alterations.—On the application of Mr. \V. Thomas the Bench consented to some slight alterations being carried out at the Cross Inn, Hirwain. Super. Rees offering no objection.
