I Siloh, Trecynon. I The celebration of St. David's Day by Siloh Young People's Society took the form of a competitive meeting. The pastor, the ReT. J. Sulgwyn Davies, pre- sided. Awards: Singing a Welsh air, children under 16, Annie Walters and Louisa Ann Williams, equal. Welsh costume, Misses Morfudd Davies and Annie Williams, equal. Fancy dress, WJillie Taylor (convent garb) and Hop- kin Griffiths (Dick Whittington and his cat), equal. Welsh Recitation, Trevor Thomas, Llewela Williams and May Harries, equal. Consolation prizes were given by Mr. Tyssul Davies. Mr. T. Teifi Evans read verses on Gwyl Dewi, and the Rev. W. B. Richards, Bradford- on-Avon, gave an address. The adjudica- tors were Messrs. E. J. Griffiths, T. Teifi. Evans, T. J. Wyatt, Miss Llan Jones, Mrs. Hannah Davies, and Mrs. M. A. Davies. — —

Siloa, Aberdare. DEWI SANT CELEBRATION I At Siloa Hall on St. David's Day, under the auspices of the M.I.S., a tea and concert were held. The trayholders were: Mrs. Landeg and Miss Jones, Elm II' Grove; Miss Lewis, Trevor Street, and Miss Davies, Preswylfa; Misses Annie Griffiths and Bronwen Evans; Miss Thomas, Abernant, and Miss Parsons. At the concert the pastor, the Rev. D. Silyn Evans, presided. Songs were given by Messrs. Lewis J. Davies and Jonah Davies, Misses Rachel Davies and Ruth Reynolds. Recitations by Messrs. J. Tarrell Williams and J. Owen (Gwer- nantydd). Poetry by Mr. J. Afanydd Morgan. Bardic contributions by Afanydd and Gwernantydd. Recitation by Miss Mabel Owen. The secretary was Miss Rosina Williams. The late Rev. Dan Lewis. On Friday last the interment took place at Soar Chapel, Whitland, of the late Rev. Dan Lewis, B.A., of Cwm- aman, whose death we recorded last week. A short service was held at the house at Maenclochog, after which the funeral proceeded by train to Whitland. The service at Soar Chapel was con- ducted by the Rev. G. Higgs. Several other ministers also spoke, and paid a glowing tribute to the deceased, among them being Revs. E. J. Owen, Moriah Aman, deceased's parent church- J. Davies, Cardiff; D. J. Thomas, ecre- tary of the South Wales English Con- gregational Union. Many wreaths had been received from relatives and friends.

Aberdare and District Chamber of Trade. A meeting of the Chamber was held on Wednesday, March 1st. The chair was occupied by Mr. T. W. Griffiths. Plate Glass Department. I The Secretary reported as to the balance sheet and accounts for the past year. Mr Thomas Lloyd stated ) that the committee had come to,the conclusion that they would be unable this year to repeat the concession made last year. This was brought about by the abnormal breakages during the year and much higher ¡ cost in replacement. Rule 27. It was reported from the Execu- i tive Committee that consideration had been given to Mr. C. R. Vicary's motion on this subject. There was much discussion upon the matter, it i being felt in some quarters that re- ligious or political discussions should; be kept out of the Chamber. Eventually Mr. Thomas Lloyd pro- posed, and Mr. C. R. Vicary second- ed. that an amended wording be ac- cepted. Mr. Morgan Watkins moved an amendment, which Mr. T. Evans seconded, that the Rule ba left in its present state. The proposition carried. Dinner Hour Closing. There was further discussion upon this subject, Mr R. H. Miles remark- ing that the present opportune time to bring about the desired object should not be lost. It was eventu- ally resolved that the canvassers be asked to refer to this matter on their visits to traders generally.

St. David's Day at the Schools. BLAENGWAWR GIRLS' SCHOOL. Miss Hastie, the headmistress, pre- sided. Patriotic address, action songs, and recitations were given. Solo by Margaret Tydvil Jones. The prize- winners were: Recitations, Maggie May James, Milly Newman, and Margaret Ann Evans. Spelling Bee, Standard I., Catherine Prosser. Spelling Bee, Stand- ard IV., Rose Roberts. Good attendance, Catherine Prosser, Doris Kemmery, and Bronwen Thomas. BLAENGW AWR INFANTS' SCHOOL. The programme included —Recita- tions by Nancy Whitcombe, Trevor Jones, Ronald Whitchurch, and Megan John. Several songs and dances were given and plays were enacted. Mr. D. E. Davies presided, and also distributed the certificates for good attendance. One for perfect attendance was given to Otla Mary Petersen. ABERAMAN BOYS' SCHOOL. The programme included Welsh airs and folk songs, physical exercises, Welsh recitations, and National songs. Solos, vocal, Haydn Phillips; violin, Clifford Lewis. Councillor E. Jones visited the school, and addressed the boys. He also presented the certificates to the essay winners and for regular attend- ance. YNYSLWYD INFANTS' SCHOOL. The programme included —Recitations by Mattie Morgan, Jenny Edwards, Rose Lambert, and Ellen Gibbon. Drama, "The Passing of Arthur": King Arthur, Tom Price; Sir Bedwere, Willie Bugg; Queen, Nellie Thomas. Duet, Ethel Davies and Gwyn Williams. Recitation, Ivy Lloyd. Action song, "Rwy'n Caru," Edna Yates, Muriel Davies and Maggie Harris. Solo, Mary Jane Overd. Recita- tion, Jenny Edwards. Also wheel dance, nursery rhymes, and the National An- thems. Miss Jennie Richards, head- mistress, presided. PARK INFANTS' SCHOOL. Welsh folk songs, recitations, and patriotic dances were given by the children. Also a short Welsh drama was performed. Excellent addresses were given by the Rev. R. J. Jones, M.A., Mr. John Griffiths, late Park Schools, and Councillor T. W. Griffiths. Ii PARK GIRLS' SCHOOL, ABERDARE. The programme included Address on "St. David," Miss H, B. Stephens. Addresses on Patriotism" to each Addresses on Patriotism" to each class by the Teachers. Recitation, Mar- garet James. An interesting item was "Britannia Calls," a patriotic pageant in character, interspersed by appropri- ate recitations and national airs (sung by the girls and played on the piano- forte by Rita Jeffreys, Standard V.). Several Welsh airs and folk songs were sung. Mrs. M. Williams, Graig Isaf, presided over Part I., and distributed certificates to the winners. Part II. was presided over by Mr. John Griffiths, late headmaster of Park Boys' School. Councillor T. W. Griffiths gave a short address to the children. ABERNANT MIXED COUNCIL SCHOOL. Addresses were given on St. David"; "Patriotism," and kindred subjects. Welsh recitations were given by Edna May Evans, Alvine Price, Maggie Evans (2nd), Gwyneth Marshall, Bessie Ray Jones, Lewis Morgan, Gertie Rees, Annie May Rowberry, Arianwen George, Emlyn Phillips, David Arnold Roberts, Gwen George, Benjamin Samuel, Alfred Morgan, Lizzie Wil- liams, Iris Eleanor Price, Margaret Davies and Willie Reynolds. Solos were rendered by David Samuel, Ruth Morgan, Bernice Cousins, Anne Harris, and May Thomas. A pianoforte selec- tion was given by Raymond Jonts, and topical "penillion" were sung by Eleanor Walters. Certificates and books were granted to ten pupils who had made perfect attendance during the year 1915. Councillor Haggar, on behalf of the Education Authority, handed a suitably inscribed and massive silver medal to Jonathan Jenkins, who has not absented himself once from school for six com- plete and successive years. He was also the proud recipient of a beautiful watch given by Councillor Haggar. Likewise Doris Castree was presented with a lady's watch, and Maggie Evans (2nd) with a lady's handbag and purse, and Wrilliam John Williams with a fine pocket knife. Each child was given a ticket of admission to the "Kosy Kine- ma." The National Anthems closed the meeting. Mr. Thomas M. Davies, head- master, presided. GLYNHAFOD MIXED SCHOOL, CWMAMAN. Duetts and solos were sung, and Welsh Airs and Folk Songs were ren- dered by the classes. An impromptu programme was made up of items from the various classes. These included recitations, songs, action songs, and dialogues. "The Passing of Arthur" was presented, and to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's death an- other suitable play, "Five Hundred Years Ago," was adapted for the top boys from Shakespeare's "King Henry V." A party of girls had prepared a few items from Maritana." The smallest children in the school had j dramatised "Hen Fenyw Fach Cidwely." Credit is due to the head teacher, Mr. Edward James, and his staff for their labours. The Rev. J. Lewis, Hebron, gave a very inspiring address. He also presented certificates. GLYNHAFOD INFANTS' SCHOOL. Miss A, B. Lewis, head-teacher, con- ducted the singing. Recitation, Willie Bird. Solo, Maggie Daniel. Recitation, Muriel Edwards. Historical Play, "Passing of Arthur," Standard 1. Girls. Several choruses and action songs were given. Hwiangerddi, Margery Morse- Duett, Mary J. Jones and Esther Roberts, Solo, Elsie Mills. Historical play, "Wearing of the Leek," Standard 1. Boys. Action song, Muriel Edwards. The Rev. J. Lewis was present and gave a short address, and distributed certificates for attendance. This celebration was thoroughly en- joyed both by the children and by the large number of parents who were present. Every item was conducted in the Welsh language. Councillor T. W. Williams, B.Sc., presented eight certifi- cates for perfect attendance. Ab Hevin sang a patriotic poem. The Rev. W. S. Davies presented nine certificates for excellence in essay" on alcohol. Several Welsh choruses W were sung by the children. Eirwen Davies, Elizabeth H. Griffiths, Myfanwy Walters, Lottie Snell, Catherine Davies, Annie Evans, and Hilda M. Roberts recited. The follow- ing dramas were well performed: — "Ysgol Gymraeg," by Elwyn V. Davies and friends; "Owen Glyndwr by Standards III. and IV. Boys; "Dygwyl Dewi by J. Morgan and friends. Standards 1. and II. also gave action songs. The headmaster (Mr. W. W. Price), who presided, read out the roll of honour of 49 men who had left Llwydcoed for the war-three had been killed, two were prisoners of war in Germany, and two wounded. CWMAMAN GIRLS' SCHOOL. Each class was given an address on Dewi Sant by the teacher. An address was given by Miss B. M. Richards, headmistress, on the glory of Wales and the value of keeping up the national language and institutions. Various Welsh folk songs were rendered. Coun- cillor Evan Jones, Cwmaman, visited the school and distributed certificates for attendance and for essays on a Temper- ance lecture recently delivered. Private W. R. Daties, 4th Welsh Regiment, who is now home on furlough, also came to the school. CWM.NMAN INFANTS'. Hymns and patriotic airs were sung. Recita- tions, Glvn Isaac, Islwyn Lloyd, Stanley Williams, Nancy Evans. Welsh folk songs by the school children. Pres- entation of the first Prince .of Wales," acted by the 1st Class Boys. Recitations, Vesta Edwards and Nellie Evans. Welsh Folk song, "Doli," by all classes. The 1st Class girls gave a Welsh dance, which was very much appreciated by the parents. Recitations, Megan Evans and Mary Ann Anthony. Councillor Evan Jones, Cwmaman, delivered a very appropriate speech, and complimented the Headmistress, Miss E. Evans, and staff on the excellent manner in which the children had been trained. Recita- tions, Elsie Owen, Mary Bowden, and Freddie Williams. The French, English and Welsh National Anthems were sung. CWMAMAN BOYS' SCHOOL. Each class-teacher addressed his own class on "Patriotism." The upper classes were shown how and why should they serve their country in the best possible manner. Several Welsh Folk songs were sung. Recitations by Islwyn Thomas, D. Emlyn Daniel, Tommy Daniel and Ieuan Thomas. Welsh airs by Standards 3, 4, 5, and 6. Recitations, Aneurin Jones and Lewis Cynlais Jenkins. "Men of Harlech" by the upper classes. Re- citations, Myrddin Isaac, Thomas J. Evans, J. Davies, W. Isaac Evans, John Lloyd, Augustus Lewis, Evan Davies, Emlyn Lloyd, David T. Davies, Hector James, and D. Stanley Thomas. Dialogue, "Y Bardd a'r Gwcw," by Morgan Jones and D. J. Rosser. Coun- cillor Evan Jones, Cwmaman, spoke a few words in Welsh. The work done rew flected grept credit on the head-teacher, Mr. William Griffiths, and his staff, es- pecially Mr. W. Idris Thomas, who had trained and conducted the upper classes. Mr. J. Eiddig Davies conducted the singing of Standards T. and II. Coun- cillor E. Jones distributed certificates for good attendance and for reporting a lecture on Alcohol." The singing of the French, Russian, Belgian, Welsh, and English National Anthems brought a pleasant morning to a close.

St. David's Day at Glyn Neath. On Wednesday morning, at the Glyn Neath Higher Standard School, the pro- gramme included an address by the head teacher on "St. David." Songs by Mary Lizzie Lewis and Millie Price. Address on "Patriotism by Mr. W. O. Thomas. Recitations by Dan Davies, Gwerfyl Price, Aubrey Thorburn, and Lewis George Davies. Songs by Elsie Hutchinson, M. L. Lewis, and Millie Price. Address on "St. David" by Miss Davies. Welsh song by Tom Cynon. The children sang several National Anthems under the leadership of Miss B. Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd conducted the meeting. At the Oddfellows Street Infants' School an interesting programme was gone through under the direction of Miss M. Thomas, headmistress. It con- sisted of Welsh hymnsw folk songs, Welsh stories, re-citations, and action songs. Miss Harrett was the accompan- ist. A large number of parents were present. At the Girls' School the proceedings were conducted by Miss Winnie Davies, head mistres. Recitations were given by Kate Edwards and Myfanwy Price. Song by Olga Jeffreys. Several Welsh airs were sung. The Glyn Neath Militarv Roll of Honour was read out at all the schools. At the Cwmgwrach Mixed School solos, recitations, Welsh folk songs and marches were given and the National Anthems of the Allied nations were sung. Solos by Rachel H. Lloyd and Ivor I Howells. The headmaster, Mr. Nicholls, conducted.—At the Infants' School Miss IJavies, headmistress, presided, assisted by Miss Price. Recitations by Eliza, A. r. _1. Organ Recital at Aberdare. On Sunday evening at the English Wesleyan Chapel, Aberdare, an organ recital was given in aid of the National Children's Home, the organist being Mr. D. B. Jones, B.Sc., Ebbw Vale. The Rev. H. Barraclough introduced the service, and a number of girls sang "The Lord's Prayer." Mr. Frank Hodges, J.P., presided, and spoke elo- quently of tho claims of the Homes. Miss Rona Davies sang "0 Divine Re- deemer. Bethel, Trecynon. GWASANAETH 0 GAN. The monthly service of song was held at Bethel Congregational Chapel on Sunday evening. Miss Blodwen Lloyd, L.C.M., London, sang HO, Divine Re- deemer." Mr. R. Watcyn Owen, Porth, sang 11 Comfort ye and "Every valley." Miss Lloyd rendered the hymn, "Wyt ti yn fy ngharu i?" Miss Lloyd and Mr. Owen gave the duet, "My song shall be alway thy mercy." The church choir sang "Deuwch ataf fi." Mr. Dan Ed- wards was the organist. The Rev. E. J. Gruffydd, the pastor, gave an address on the words, "Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." The preacher observed that the Buddhist creed taught that the best remedy for the weariness and worry of life was to slink into the unconsciousness of eternal death. That was the religion of despair. Jesus's religion offered rest and con- solation. All that was needed was to come unto him.
