Aberda.-a County School. ANNUAL PRIZE DISTRIBUTION. On Thursday afternoon the annual prize distribution in connection with the above school was held at the Con- stitutional Hall. Mr. D. P. Davies, J.P occupied Lhe chair, and there was a large attendance of the parents of the children, as well as of the leading r'i- dents. But, unfortunately, as Thursday was the day of the Glamorgan County Council meeting a number of the Governors were unable to attend. Mr. D. P. Davies was, however, supported on the platform by Mrs. D. P. Davies, Mr. and Mrs. T. Walter Williams, Mr. Lewis N. Williams, Mrs. F. W. Mander, Mrs. W. Lloyd (Highland Place), Mr. W. Charlton Cox, M.A., and Mrs. Cox, and Mr. J. D. Thomas, the clerk to the Governors; and Mrs. M. Mackenzie, Professor of Education in the University College of S.Guth Wales, Cardiff, who had agreed to attend and distribute the certi- ficates- and prizes on the occasion. The meeting opened with a fine render- ing of the chorus May Morning" (Flo- tow) by the school children under the conductorship of Mr. Tom, Price, the visiting teacher at the school. The accompanist was Master W. J. Jones. The Chairman, whose rising was the signal for an outburst cf cheering by the school children, in the course of Lis opening address said that the school was established 10 years ago. They had now an opportunity of judging to some extent of the value of the work done. Aherdare had done well, and many of the past stu- duents. at the school were to-day holding important positions in various parts if the country. (Loud applause.) He hoped that in another five or ten years more of them would be doing so. He proceed- ed to deal with the scheme under which these schools were carried on, and con- tended that the basis of population upon which at present the grants were pad was not a fair one. The grants should be paid on the basis of the number of pupils in the school and on the basis of the work done. (Loud applause.) Th,y had at present a headmaster and 35 assistants, whereas on the basis of the number of students, judged on the pro- portion in neighbouring schools, they ought to have at least 18 assistants. That was at present impossible owing 10 the grants being so low. If Aberdare had its fair proportion of the grant on the basis of the number of children in the school then that could easily be done. He re- ferred to the fact that a: new scheme w-s now being arranged, but he thought the scheme was a peculiar one, and it re- quired a great deal of overhauling. (Ap- plause.) After a reference to the large number of distinctions, certificates, rtc., gained by the pupils at the school, ho said that there was one feature of the work of the School to which he wished to draw particular attention, that being the way in which the junior classes were taught. They did excellent work aniong these, and that he looked upon as most important. That was solid work, and although the juniors did not gain certi- ficates, the work told. He would say to the teachers, "Take care of the juniors and the seniors will take care of them- selves." (Cheers.) He also pointed out that from the start the Governors had arranged the prizes for each form so that the juniors as well aa the seniors had a fair share of the prizes. (Loud applause.) Mr. W. Charlton Cox, M.A., then pre- sented the following ,epoxt:- Number of pupils on the roll, 317, an increase of 17 on the average number last year. ANNUAL EXAMINATION BY THE CENTRAL WELSH BOARD. The practical examinations in cookery, needlework, woodwork, chemistry and physics, and the oral examination in French were conducted at various dates in March, June, and July, by the Ex- aminers appointed by the Board for that ¡ purpose. The written examination lasted from July 11th to July 27th, and was of a searching nature. This year, for the first time, some cf the Local Managers an I general publ:c shared in the supervision of the examination with very satisfactory results. The Head Master hopes that the public will co- i operate further with the School in this ] direction in July 1907. CERTIFICATES GAINED BY THE PUPILS. On their work in this examination the pupils of the school gained 50 certifi- oates, w'tli 78 marks of distinction; this ia the highest number of the latter ever gained by the school. 5CHOLAESHIPS AND EXHIBITIONS GAINED. A scholarship of the value of C80 a ear for three years tenable at any of 10 older Universities, was awarded by 1e County Education Committee in July st to May Williams, the senior prefect the girls, who has now entered Girton allege, Cambridge. This is the most iluable single scholarship that has ever ell gained by one of our pupils. The arks obtained by this pupil also quali- d her for a County Exhibition, which, wever, the gaining of this scholarship barred her from holding. V County Scholarship of the value of 0 a year for three years was won by 3T Griffiths, who has since entered the iversity College of South Wales and nmouthshire. This pupil's marks also dified him for a County Exhibition. n Entrance Scholarship of the value 220 a year, tenable at the University lege of Wales, Aberystwyth, was won

Convsvjal Meeting at Aberdare. TALBOT. SLATE CLUB SUPPER. On Thursday evening the sixth annual supper was held under the auspices of the Slate Club, held at the Talbot Inn. A large number sat down to a sumptu- ous spread prepared by the genial Hostess (Mrs. Groves). After justice, had been done to the choice viands provided, Mr. J. Brittain (Allsopps") presided over the convivial which followed. In the course of his speech the Chairman re- marked that the Talbot Slate Club had. been in existence six years, and was still in a flourishing conodition. The number of members on thp roll book was nearly sixty, and that night each member re- ceived 14s. lOid. dividend. (Applause.) The secretary, Mr. T. Price, gave the annual report of the Club. He said that < £ 24 had been paid out in sick relief, and it was most encouraging that they were able to do this. All the old members had decided to continue as members for the coming year, and they should be very pleased to enroll new members, which could be done by applying to the landlord, Mr. Groves, or the Secretary. Mr. T. Dovey, who was in the vice- chair, said he was glad to see, a good number of the Talbot Miniature Shoot- ing Club present. Perhaps next year a shooting display would be one of the items on the programme. (Laughter.) At intervals the following gentlemen contributed to the harmony of the even- ing —Messrs. W. H. T'empleman (come- dian), W. Jones, J. Crowley, J. Absalom, T. Thomas and' W. Evans. The vocalists were accompanied) on the harp by Mr. Abraham Richards, Hirwain. An en- joyable meeting closed with the National Anthem. r .if! :t7, CAMBRIAN SLATE"'CLUB SUPPER. On Thursday evening a very large number sat down to an excellent supper prepared by Host and Hostess Upton, Combrian Hotel. The occasion was to mark the annual Slate Club supper. The Cambrian Slate Club is the oldest in the town, and has a membership of 77. This year each member received 14s. dividend, plus a 2s. ticket for supper. After the tables were cleared an excellent smoker was held. Mr. W. A. Lewis made a capital chairman. The music was well sustained by Messrs. W. H. Templeman (comedian), T. Colley, T. Williams, W. A. Lewis. Gramophone selections by Mr. Tom Williams, and an excellent per- formance with the bones by Mr. Phil James were loudly applauded. A vote of thanks to the host and hostess,the chair- man, the singers and the singing of the National Anthem terminated a pleasant evening. o

The Greenwich works of the South Metro- politan Electric Light and Power Company have been wrecked by the explosion of a large boiler. Francis Whitfleld. who would have been 104 years old next April, has just died at Newport, Mon. Mr. W. R. Matthews, the headmaster of Hogarth Boys' School, and organising master of the Chi«wick Council's schools, has retired after forty-four years' service in guiding the ele- mentary educational work of Chiswick. When the secretary of a loan, club, which met at a public-house at West Ham, disappeared last vs'oefe, jt was found that his accounts shewed a deficiency of £46. but the landlord of the oublic- house has subscribed that amount to the funds. It was stated at the West Ham Guardians' meeting that a patient suffering from typhoid had spat in the eye of Miss Turner, a proba- tioner nurse, with the result that the sight had been destroyed, while that of the other eye had been impaired. The London ftarque Molanope, bound from Manzatiillo to Eureka, encountered a terrible storm on December 4th, and the* captain, his wife, and two daughters, and eighteen of the crew, who were oblisred to take refuge in the rigging for a night, were rescued by the schooner W. H. Smith. The Melanope had to be abandoned. Two empty waggons and a guard's van which had become detached from a train in the Thurstonland Tunnel, near HuddersfieId, were run into by a, passenger train on Thursday. The waggons and the van were smashed, and the guard of the goods train, Edward Barker, was injured. No other person was hurt. Mr. Joseph Coyle has died at Rich Hill, near Armagh, at the age of 105 years, and another centenarian, Mr. Henry M'Kearney, has re- cently died in the same county, aged 103. A mechanic suffering from partial deafness, who was quite close to the scene of the recent roburite explosion at Witten, says a Berlin cor- respondent, completely recovered his hearing. To modify the manner of the taking of the oath by juries, a bill will shortly be introduced in the French Chamber, and it is expected that the formula: "Before God and before men" will be suppressed. The Vienna fire brigade was called out re- cently to effect the rescue of a dog, which had fallen into a deep well in the centre of the city, and the men succeeded in saving the animal. Mr. E. Robertson, Secretary of the Admiralty, has stated that there was no reason to believe that leaflets distributed on warships on the eve of the General Election had anything to do with the Portsmouth, mutiny.

It should also he mentioned that Owen Evans, who- has for some time acted as Laboratory Assistant, in September last won a scholarship in Electrical Engi- neering of the total value of 1-52 at the Northampton Institute, London; and that Miss Aenid Picton, a former pupil of the School, intu an Entrance Scholar- ship of the value of < £ 10 a year at Aber- ystwyth. OTHER CERTIFICATES. University of London Intermediate Science Examination. Ezer Griffiths passed this examination in July last. He is the first pupil of the school to do so, and the only candidate this year who passed it direct from a Welsh Intermedi- ate School. He has only one more ex- amination to pass in order to gain the decree of Bachelor of Science. London Matriculation.—David Rode- rick and Sarah Mary George passed this examination in January, and P. Basil Jones in June. Welsh Matriculation.-Gw ladys Jones passed this examination in June; also the Senior Certificates gained by Nancy Edwards, Gwen Hughes, Mary Jones, P. Basil Jones, John R. King, Sarah J. Powell, Mildred Pratt, Tegwen Hees, and Ethel Watkins entitle them to exemp- tion from this examination. WELSH. As there has been during the past twelve months considerable agitation about the teaching of Welsh in County Schools, and as a, gre.at deal of ignorance prevails in regard to the matter, it may be well to point out that the language has been taught and otherwise encour- aged in this School for some years. The number at present receiving* instruction in the subject is 256 out of 381. It should, however, be pointed out that those pupils who learn Latin cannot also learn both French and Welsh, as the available time is insufficient for the three lang- rtages. Such pupils will therefore be obliged to choose which of the modern languages, French or Welsh, they will take up. In conclusion I wish to thank members of the Staff for their loyal support and hearty co-operation in our present diffi- cult circumstances, and members of the Governing Body for their consistent sympathy wit and interest in, the School. Without this it would have been impossible for us to have attained the measure of success that has fallen to us. In the course of his report Mr. Cox also referred to the discussions that had been taking place during the past few months in the County as to the compara- tive merits of dual schools and separate schools for boys and girls, and he said that one of the arguments used in sup- port of separate schools was that th« girls were neglected in mixed schools, As a proof that the charge was not true in reference to the Aberdare School, he pointed out that out of five honours certificates won three were won by girls, 12 senior certificates out of 22 were won by girls and 11 junior certificates out of 23. In other words 52 per cent. of the certificates had gone to the girls. Taking also the number of distinctions in vari- ous sections, 2 in the honours had been secured by girls out of the 5; in the seniors 21 out of 32 and in the junior section 22 out of 41, making in all 45 out of 78, or 57 per cent. (Loud applause.) Also out of the 12 students who had matriculated in the London or Welsh University during the year, 8 were girls. 'n (Hear, hear.) This did not look as if the girls were neglected in that school. (Loud applause.) The School Choir then sang Christ- mas Carol," after which Mrs. M. Mackenzie distributed the certificates and prizes. Having distributed the prizes, Mrs. Mackenzie, in the course of her address, congratulated the school upon its suc- cess, and said she was exceedingly pleased with the work done by the girls, and especially that one of the girls from that School was proceeding to Girton, where that distinguished Welsh lady, Miss Constance Jones, was the principal. (Hear, hear.) However proud they were of their Welsh University, it was well that some of their brighter pupils should proceed to the older University, if only to show what Welsh boys and girls could do. (Loud applause.) She was glad the life of the school was so varied, and that dramatic entertain- ments, a school magazine and sports found place therein. (Hear, hear. She was also pleased to find that the people of the town took a- keen interest in the school. She was much struck when in America some time ago to find the keen interest taken by all in the school. When she asked in any town or village what was there worth seeing therein, she was invariably told U You must see our school." She wanted the same interest to be taken in the schools in Wales. Continuing, she urged the children to cultivate self knowledge, self- reverence and self control. By means of a couple of fairy tales they should deeply impress the children with the importance of having a definite aim in life, and to determine ] early what they should like to be and to do, after they left school. (Loud ap- ] plause.) | Mr. T. Walter Williams, in proposing i a vote of thanks to Mrs Mackenzie, after I a reference to the ignorance of present day children of folklore and fairy tales, said he would like to hear Mrs. Mac- kenzie's views of the comparative advan- tages of dual schools and separate ones. (Hear, hear.) He had heard a speech some time ago from Miss Hughes,a great authority on educational matters, on the subject, but it had not impressed him as it did some others, because he had a few years before heard a most able address by the same lady on the other side of the question. (Laughter.) The Chairman had referred to the proposed scheme of the Glamorgan County Council as a peculiar one. That was hardly the ad- jective he (the speaker) would use. He called it a screamingly funny scheme, and he could assure them that Mr. W. S. Gilbert never had hit upon so funny a one. (Roars of laughter.) The best thing that could happen to that school was for it to be placed under the control L of the Aberdare Education Committee, and the Glamorgan County Council keep their hands off." (Loud applause.) Mr. Lewis N. Williams, Caecoed, in a brief felicitous speech, seconded the ote of thanks, which was carried with ac- clamation. Mrs. Mackenzie, in thanking them, de dined to respond to the tempting offer of Mr Williams to give her views on dual schools, further than to say that they should make every school the best of -is kind. (Hear, hear.) On the motion of Mrs. Lloyd, High- land Place, seconded by Rev. Morgan Powell, vicar of Aberaman, a vote of thanks was accorded to the Chairman, and a chorus by the children brought the proceedings to a close. 0
