Mainly About People.j'
Mainly About People.j' I Tao Rjv D. T. Jo no s, L:v.npoter, has been apjointcd curate of St. Marv'a, Bangor. it is a coincidence that tiie presidents of ¡ both the North and South Wales Calvinistic Mothodist Associations this year are natives of C\v:r a von. They are the R-cv D. M. Da- | vies. Penclawdd, and the Rev J. Hughes, ALA.. Liverpool. 1*1 iss Margaret Williams, who won the first prize in portraiture at the Llangollen Eisteddfod with a portrait of Principal Grii- fiths, of Cardiff, has won the silver medal of the Royal Academy of Arts for the best portrait from life. The Rev Gwilym Navies. B.A., of Broad Haven, is going to SwitzerLand to trtudy Swiss methods of domesiie legislation. Mr Davies i's possibly amonglhe most widely travelled young ministers in Wales, as he has made a practice for years of spending tiis vacations abroad. InLhe list of scholarsliips iid exhibitionn awarded at Cambridge on Friday, the two classical awards at St. John's College were ma:1s to W. A. C. Darlington, of Shrews- bury School, and H. M. Lloyd, Rosaall School. The former is a f-on of the late Mr T. Darlington, H.M. Inspector of Schools, Aberystwyth (who was a Fellow of St. John's College), and the latter is a son of the Rev T. Lloyd, vicar of Rhyl. Among the delegates who attended the National Conference on Education was Sir Thomas Taeon. Until he sold the Hotel Cambria, Aberystwyth (now the C.M. Theo- logical College), and the Vicarage Field to Mr David Davies, M.P., Sir Thomas was the largest owner of prjperty at Aberyst- wyth, his interest amounting to close upon £ 40,000. He is the owner of the pier and pavilion, the ,Constitution Hill cliff railway and grounds. &e. Mr Aubrey Thomas, who is now serving his fourth term as Congressman for the nineteenth district of Ohio—the birthplace .,f the late President McKinley, and at one time represented by the Late President Gar- jie.'d— a native of Carmarthenshire. His father, the late Mr John Rhys Thomas, who died in 1898. was cne of the pioneer iron ma-nufacturers in the Mahoning Valley, and his moiher is descended from a family of Welsh farmers. He is unmarried, and lives wish his mother and sister at "Brynhyfryd." At the Girls' College, Gorphwysfa, Old Coiwyn, on Friday afternoon, a silver medal, awarded by the Mark Masons' Bene- volent Fund, to Miss Gwen Gertrude Hughes (for pioliciency) was presented by Canon Edwards, rector of Aber, the Deputy Pro- vincial Grand Master in Charge of the Mark Masons in North Wales. Miss Hughes is a daughter of the late Brother John Hughes, of Amlwch, and is being educated by the educational branch of the fund at uorphwysfa. The marriage took puce at St. John's Church, Chester, on Tuesday, of the Rev Albert Owen Evans, B.A., d ocesan inspector of isehools, to Miss Grace Henrietta. Kent, Bryudyrfryn, Bettw.-ycoed, fourth daughter I of the ktve Mr Edwin Jackson Kent, of Gra.sser.dale, Liverpool. The bride was ac- companied by her sister, Miss Aaice Kent, and v. as given tway by her brother, Mr Fred Kent, of Liverpool. The officiating clergy were the Revs Daniel Morgan, rector of Llamrisant, Anglesey, and Canon Cooper ooott. Mr and Mrs Owen Evans left sub- sequently for London anu the (Continent. -L Mr Ernest Rhys points out that it is cur- ious to see that the two elect English poet*, older and younger, choseii.to celebrate Mil- ton's memory—Mr George .Meredith and Mr Laurence Binyon-are both of Welsh stock, as their names show. Of Mr Mere- dith's name and fame nothing remains to be said, since London has established a special cult of the one and changed the accent of the other. As for Mr Binyon, his name is simply the Anglified form of Ab Eynon. He is certainly Milton's finest living disciple among the younger poets, just as Mr Mere- dith's is the noblest tribute paid the master this many a year. Wales is producing a fresh crop of pro- mising politicians. Mr Roch, the new mem- ber for Pembrokeshire, is generally looked upon in the House as a coming man, and an undoubted power for the future. His grand- father. ''Powel Maesgwyn, who represented Carmarthenshire in the Gladstonian era, was popular in the country, but made no mark in the House. Mr Roüh maintains his grandfather's reputation in the country, and is creating one for himself in the House. He has recently associated himself with Mr Ellis Davies, the member for South Car- narvonshire, in promoting agriculture and labour interests, of which questions both have made a special study. It looks as if all the denominational chairmen .for next year are to be drawn from Wales. The Rev David Morgan, the chairman-elect of the Congregational Union of New South Wales, is a native of Glam- organ, and was trained for the ministry at a preparatory college in Carmarthenshir^ and afterwards at Western College. Arfy working for the Colonial Missionary Soci in Tasmania and in connection with Congregational Union of that Sltate. wen, to New South Wales in February, and settled at Kogarah, succeeding th"^ N. J. Cocks. M.A.. in April, of tha^ Here is a quotation from Mr isitr Eraser's description of Ma.bon :H(- mke:!I a large oize in ehaiiv. His girth is el phan tine. His waistcoa.1 is as commodious a.s a golf cape. I can just imagine Mabon rollirg along a pit bottom, but I cannot iinagnie him crawling. I have half an idea, though, that the hilly surface of South Wales is due to Mabon's wriggling underground in his mining davs. Though bulky he is nimble. He is as ruddy faced as a farmer. He has laughed mucli and grown ponderously fat. When he chuckles, he quivers like a blanc- mange in a dining car. He sings. Once the Welsh members had a little dinner to themselves 'within the precincts of the Pal^ea of Westminster." No common Eng- lishman was allowed admission. But sud- denly up the .stairs and through the corri- dors" came the sound of deep-throated melody. It was Mabon singing. Men for- sook the House, and stood in the passage to listen. He sang in Welsh."

Dear Sir,—One of my Sons went out .So Canada, and settled down in the neigh- bourhood of Oilsprings, Lambton, Ontario. Some three months ago he wrote home saying he had been on the sick list for several weeks, suffering pninfully from Piles. Immediately after receiving his 'etter I had a supply of your Pills which forwarded to him. Three weeks ago he wrote home saying that your Pills had Jone him immense good. Before he had finished one box he was able to start work again. Last night I had another letter "rom him stating that to all appearances tli., disease had Ipft Hm, and lie was in his "sual health again. Hnving acoidentally heard that a man living in the same neighbourhood had been a great sufferer from Piles for over twenty years, my son sought him out, told him of the good he hud received from your Pillb, and gave him half of the box he had. Within four days the man wos jumping with joy from the good effects of your Pills. Having received so much be fit personally, and witnessing their good effects on the man referred to, my Ron is very anxious that other sufferers may know and receive the same benefit from them as he did himself.
