I CYCLING AND MOTORING. "I lin- r^p^^cinl trains left ^sottiri^Li;'in Station, on Friday moi-cing, convey in <» over 1,000 employees of the Boston Works of Unmoor, Ltd., and tlwir friends to Hcysham en routj for thl Ide of Man. The huge party was conveyed by the s.s. "Londomlori-y" to Douglas, where arrange- ments had been made for every pop«iblo form of ent rtainuient. On Friday evening tiie staff dinner was held at the Villi-rs Hotel, with the Chairman of th-Companv {Mr Edward Powell) in the chair. During Friday afd Saturday, excursions were mddc to all the places of interest, in the island. Not the least interesting feature was pro- vided by the. Beeston Humber Silver Plize Band of twenty-four performers, one of the most famous of the works bands of the Jucilands, whic-li provid-e<l tuneful music .-it frequejit intenxils Uiroughout the whole of the two days' holiday. The return journey wa-s commenced at 12 o'clock on Saturday midnight, Nottingham being reached at oeven o'clock on Sunday morning. The ar- rangements were of the most- complete char- acter, nothing being left to chance, and in- dicated that marvellous power of organisa- tion which has beon one of the secrets of the success of the greatest cycle and oar- building firm in the country. I he British motor car manufacturer is not only asserting his supremacy in this ountry, but is now invading the Continent. and with the very best results. The manneri in which the popular Humber cars are re- ceived in the very home of the motor car will be apparent from too following letter vshich Messrs Humber have received from Mr R. Hennessey, of Bagnolet, Cognac, Charente, France. Mr Hennessey writes ::s follows regarding his 15-h.p. Coventry Humber:—lhe car has given me the ful- lest satisfaction, arid though I have driven it- invariably myself for about 2,300 miles since February 1st, I have never had the slightest trouble with it, o.nd have h;wl absolutely no repairs to do to the car in ail} v, ay, and it haf. been uji eye-opener in this part of the country to many people •-vho were in the habit of scoffing at tho idi2lfl of a British-built car." The Motor Union of Great Britain and Ireland will visit Southport on Saturday, July 20th, when they will be the guests of the Liverpool Automobile Club and Self Pro- pelled J raffie Association. These pro- vincial gatherings have been very successful in the post. They afford an excellent op- portunity for motorists from all parts of the country to meet and make friendships and discuss matters of mutual interest. On c the South port occasion the General Com- mittee of the Union will meet in the South- port To'vn Hall in the morning, when tliov will be officially welcomed by the Mayor. For the afternoon the Earl of Derby has invited tho members of the Union to visit his stately house and grounds at Knowsley, fourteen miles from Southport, where a garden party will be held.. In the evening J trie eighth provincial dinner of the Union j will lie held in the Prince of Wales Hotel, J southport. Motorists desiring to attend J the gathering should communicate with the Secretary of the Motor Union, Mr R*»s Jeffreys, 1, Albemarle street, Londun, W. Undor the auspices of the Automobiljo Club of North Wales, BOIKO twenty ears car- ried out on Monday a hiil-climbing trial near Llanxwst. The weather, unfortunately, was wet, but even the depressing downfall and the dull hue of the sky did nut prevent the noting from 9 both interesting and buceefisful. The cars arrived in the town in the fore- seen, 'ar.d (W.H9 weighed at the railway station. Mr II. J. Watling being "clerk of the scales." Th-3 membeM of the club. with the officials and other gueste, lunched at the Victoria Hotel, and afterwards a movie was made to the hill the ascent of Wilich was the task set before the eompeti- tcre. This is the road leading from Llan- rwst—which town is practically on tihe floor of the VaLe- of Conway—to Llangernievv and "rt to Rhuddlau. It was the coach read to North a!es in the days before the construc- tion of the main road along the coast. Be- tween Llanrwst and the crest of the acclivity at Pnn-yr-Alot'sfa, the road constitutes the ste.epe.st "main" road in North Wales. The stai ting-point- of tlve climb was jtffit beyond the tint milestone from Llarirwst, at a height of 264 foot above sea level. The total dia- tanee of th,e course was just under two miles. Half-way up the height is 600 feet, and 1 en-\r- Alcosla is 816 feet, above sea level. There are several bends in the. road, toe (surface is fairly good, and the average gradient Ls 1 in 18. The ascent was con- sidered an excellent test of the climbing- j ower of the vehicles. Four prizes were offered—a gold medal, a silver medal, and two bronze medals. The committiee of tlw club were the clerks of the course, and Major J. A. Turner was thl8 marshal and j is tarter. Major Fanning Evans and Lieu- tenant- Rowley, R.N., were the director. and Colonel O. LI. J. Evans, Colcnel T. Gee, and Mr J. R. Daviess we-re the judgt3^. Th<- stewards- of the course were Messrs J. Black- well, W. H. Da-rbiahire, C. T. Allard, A. Lloyd Griffith, J. P. Maitland, C. F. Davey, R. O. Davies, If. E. Blackwell, and W. G. Owen. The handicapping was by Mr J. W. Ordie, secretary of the "Rcyal Automobile Club; while the secretary of the meeting wm Mr IT. R. Davies, Menai Bridge. Rain fell continuously during the contest, u,nd the road "'Îô rather slushy. The stew- ards were posteel so as to guard all curves in the event- off being met, but the road has thp advantage of there being no cross lanes leading into it. All was ready for the start at three o'clock. An interval of two I minutes was allowed between each car, and the more powerful one-, took the gradient at a fiue pace, the quickest time being made by Mr Thornev, ill's Daimler 3mins. 3 4-5secs. while the slowest car took llmins. lOsecf. Some of the. curw** in the road a,re very .^hai-j>, and needed smart negotiation; but there were no mishap;.? except a ripped eowr. After allowing for the handicap, the win- ners were the following :—First, Mrs Pa.rry'n Clement Talbot; second. Mr Thornewin's Daimler; third, Mr c\, C. Daviess Daim- ler; fourth, Mrs Mason's Germain. These frnrr receive the ir.-xlals. W. H. Buxton's Germain, the Rev E. O. Watkin Davies's MermK-in, Mr Yale's Beeston-Humber, Mr Lee'ri Sjddeley, and Mr A. C. Df/vi<,s'B Hum- ber were the next in order. The weather improved <30011 after the trials concluded.
