HOUSE OF LORDS.—MONDAY. The Earl of Derby presented a petition from the mayor and corporation of this town in favour of closing public houses on Sunday. The bill for the relief of the Irish distress, which has already passed the House of Commons, was read a second time, after some discussion, in which it was sug- gested by several of the speakers that the Govern- ment should aid in the emigration of the surplus population in Ireland.

HOUSE OF COMMONS.—MONDAY. Mr Chaplin took up the question which Mr Jasper Moore, when he was member for South Shropshire, championed, namely, the repeal of the m Jt tax. He put his grievance in the form of a motion, and, amidst hearty laughter, he referred to the evil of taxing home agricultural produce instead of "foreign stuff." After several ques- tions had been disposed of, the Chancellor of the Exohequer, in answer to Mr Vivian, stated that it would not be possible to introduce a bill this session dealing with the higher and intermediate education in Wales. The personal "misunder- standing" between Lord Castlereagh and the Home Rule party to an explanation from that distinguished representative of an historic family, and also from Mr Sullivan and other gentlemen, but "the matter dropped" without any important parliamentary action being taken. Mr O'Donnell raised the Irish fisheries question, and practically pleaded for subsidies. His motion, however, was negatived without a division. The house then went into committee of supply. Colonel Stanley produced his army estimate budget, which led to a protracted debate.

HOUSE OF COMMONS.—TUESDAY. The case of Charles Edmund Grissell, who was adjudged guilty last session of a breach of privilege in offering to control for £ 2,000 the' decision of a committee appointed to consider the Tower Bridge Bill, was before the House. It will be remembered that a warrant was issued for the arre3t of Mr Grissell in July last year, but he evaded its execution until the last day before the close of the Session, when he gave himself up. As the warrant could only operate while the Session was sitting, the result of this mancsuvre was that Mr Grissell's imprisonment lasted for one day. On Tuesday Mr Walpole presented a petition from the offending gentleman, declaring that he left England last year on the advice of his physicians, and expressing humble apologies to the House. The Chancellor of the Exchequer thereupon proposed that Mr Grissell should be taken into custody by the Sergeant-at-Arms. and reprimanded at the bar by Mr Speaker. Mr Rylands and members sitting on both sides of the House urged that the course proposed by Sir Stafford Northcote was far too lenient. This argument is accentuated by the fact that Mr Ward, the second offender in this matter, who gave himself up at once, was impri- soned for a week, so that either his punishment must have been excessive or the one which it was proposed to inflict upon Mr Grissell, who had been guilty of a second offence in evading the Speaker's warrant, was insufficient. Ultimately the Chan- cellor of the Exchequer's proposal was set aside, and the suggestion of Mr Rylands that all the House should at present do was to order Mr Grissell to be taken into custody was adopted. Mr Grissell was subsequently arrested, and he was brought b, fore the House on Wednesday. In answer to Mr Otway, the Chancellor of the Exchequer—who on Monday declined to answer the t-aine question without notice-said that the statement published by the Daily News setting forth conditions for the settlement of the Afghan problem was "purely imaginary." Mr Taylor then brought forward his motion for the abolition of the Game Laws, and Sir W. Barttelot proposed as an amendment that it was not expedient to deal with the question. Mr C. S Read, gpeaking as a representative of the farmers, thought that the tenant should have the right to kill the hares and rabbits which preyed upon his crops. Among other members who took part in the debate was Sir W. Harcourt, who described the amendment as one of no surrender, and asked the Conservatives whether they were going to assert in a direct form that they would have no change in the Game Laws. Sir M. W. Ridley, speaking on behalf of the Government, said that they would prefer to meet the motion with a direct negative rather than with Sir W. Barttelot's amendment. Upon a division Mr Taylor's motion was negatived by 160 votes by 87. On Sir W. Barttelot's amendment being put as a substantive motion, Sir W. Harcourt, amidst laughter, moved the omission of the word not so as to make the resolution assert that it was expedient to deal v ith the game laws. Upon a second division, 119 voted for the amendment and 135 against it. When Sir W. Barttelot's amend- ment was put as a substantive motion, it was rejected without a division.

HOUSE OF COMMONS.-WEDNESDAY. Mr Grissell was brought to the bar of the House of Commons on Wednesday by the Speaker's order, for breach of privilege. Mr Grissell expressed his "deep submission," and humbly threw himself upon the mercy of the House. He then withdrew. The Chancellor of the Exchequer moved that as Mr Grissell had evaded the punish- ment of his offence against the peivileges of the House, he be now committed to Newgate. Mr W. E. Forster seconded the motion, which was at once adopted. Mr Grissell, who is said to have been very much astonished upon being informed of the decision of the House, was afterwards removed to Newgate. The second reading of the Ulster Tenant-right Bill was moved by Mr Macartney, who said that the object of the measure was to improve the proceedings with regard to tenant- right in Ireland under the Land act of 1870 It would throw on the landlord the onus of proving that improvements were made by him and not by the tenant; and would apply to leaseholders as well as tenants at will from year to year. Mr Biggar said he should propose amendments in committee to widen its operation. Last year the Government strongly denounced a bill brought forward with a similar object. Yesterday the Attorney-General for Ireland accepted Mr Mac- artney's measure, but said that he should try to make substantial alterations in it at a later stage. Major Nolan expressed a hope that the Govern- ment would give faculties for the passage of the measure, and intimated that it was j ust possible that they intended to make election capital out of supporting it, while taking no means to pass it into law. The bill was read a second time, and the House adjourned at the unusually early hour of four o'clock.

CONWAY ROVERS V. LLANDUDNO. These clubs met on the ground of the former on the 28th inst. Llandudno winding the toss elected to play with the wind and ground in their favour, although there being a stiff breeze at the time the Rovers managedto keep the ball from their goal with ease and made some good attempts upon their opponents' goal. On changing ends-n either side had obtained a goal. The Rovers having the wind in their favour, kept the ball in their opponents' end, but were some time before they could get a goal. About ten minutes before time 1 9 was called, the home team scored one, which was disputed by the other team, saying it was out of boundary before kicked through, both the umpires were unable to give their judgment,—but it was undoubtedly a goal. It will be remembered that these clubs played a match at Llandudno some time ago, which resulted in a draw, the Rovers being then over-matched. We are glad to say it was quite the reverse last Saturday. BANGOR F. RHYL. These clubs met-on Saturday, at Bangor, the game being one of the best played on that ground this season. lihyl brought rather a poor team, and up to half time the ball WAS almost constantly at their end, Bangor succeeding in scoring one goal. After half time the play was more even, and within the last ten minutes two more goals were kicked by Bangor, who thus won by three goals to nothing. Fellowes did remarkably good service for the home team, and the play of Wil- liams and Smith claims notice. Binger, Davies, and Wright played well for Rhyl, whose team was made up of W. Roberts, F. THE LAST LOOK ROUND PARIS. The latest novelty in bodices is called the Cuirasse Veronese, which is composed of silk elastic, a.special article, made with all the ap- pearance of being a rich, heavy faille, and fits the figure to perfection, without a wrinkle. Toilettes have been so long embroidered with flowers, that birds of rich plumage are now worked, and ere me silks or satins are ornamented with peacocks' feathers while a charming toilette of brocade and tea- rose satin was embroidered with birds of paradise. Cachemire satin is a new material, which is a kind of twill fabric of cachemire wool for the foundation,while the gloss on it has all the appearance of real satin consequently, it is most expensive. Sealskin paletots are no longer worn loose- fitting; they are semi-fittiug both back and front Ulsters are most worn just now, owing to the unsettled weather, and either the monk's hood or one deep cape finishes off the shoulders. Never were fringes more effective than just now, or more popular. They are made to correspond with every material; and the new Oriental fringe for trimming dolmans and dresses of Oriental cachemire, is very elegant. It is composed of cachemire beads, in mixtures of red, green, black, gold, &c. (Jords and galons are likewise made to match; but the bronze fringe, and chenille and jet fringe, are more extensively used than any other. Cloth dolmans are edged round with a deep band of pekin, or embossed velvet, and rich jet fringe, with a jet ornament down the back. Bright- coloured silk handkerchiefs are worn out- side the paletot for street wear, simply folded in half and tied in a knot in front, deep cardinal and Spanish yellow being most worn. Reception and dinner toilettes have the train three yards long for ball wear it is matter of taste whether train or quite short dresses are worn; the latter are generally patronised by young ladies. Cachemire in delicate shades, trimmed silk, is much used for young ladies' evening dresses, as it is far more becoming than silk, and more serviceable than gauze or tarlatan. Black gloves and shoes will be worn with the most delicate costume. The striped jupons are very fashionable; and black, striped red er gold colour, are most useful, as they can be worn with any dress. Widow's veils vary from two to three yards in length, and are com- posed of the best crape, hemmed up quite half a yard deep.Marie-.Bayard in Weldon's Ladies' Journal.

A couple of kists were discovered a few days ago at Clifton, Westmoreland. The statement which is going about that Dr Richardson is having the wine left to him by Sir W. Trevelyan analysed is without foundation Lord George Hamilton, M.P., will preside at the annual dinner of the Artists' General Bene- volent Institution, on the 8th of May, at Willis's Rooms. The editor of the London Figaro, Mr J. Mortimer, has written a letter expressing his thanks to those who endeavoured to obtain his release. The dates now definitely fixed for the lectures of M. Renan in London are the 5th, 8th, 12th, and 15th of April next. Subject, The Influence of Rome on the Formation of Chris- tianity." At the meeting of the British Archaeolo- gical Association last Wednesday, a resolution was passed unanimously deprecating the wholesale restoration of the fratry of Carlisle Cathedral, now in progress of demolition. Mr Carlyle, says the Echo, besides collect- ing material for his biography, has just concluded the revision of a new and corrected edition of his works. Mr Carlyle, it is said, takes a very gloomy view of the immediate future of England. An Italian priest and philologist, Ber- nsyo ino Peyron, has discovered in the binding of a Greek manuscript from the ancient library of St. Ambrose, on Mount Athos, two fragments of St. Paul's Epistles in the Greek text. Similar fragments at Paris have long been highly valued. Sir John Gilbert's most important contri- bution to the forthcoming Spring Exhibition of the Watercolour Society will be "The Battle of the Standard," a subject giving full scope for the display of the high pictoral qualities of dramatic action and composition* of our English Rubens. Mr Woolner, R.A., is sculpturing a large medallion bust portrait, in high relief, of Mr Chamberlain, which is to be the chief enrichment of a fountain, erected by subscription at Birming- ham, as a testimony of public gratitude for the parliamentary and other services of that member oi Parliament. M. Debaize, the leader of a French ex- pedition into Central Africa which promised im- portant results, has died at Ujiji. When two days journey beyond the lake, M. Debaize was deserted by his carriers. On the 10th of June last he was back at Ujiji, and his death appears to have taken place in September. The proprietors of a New York paper offer the following advantages to all who subscribe to it: To have their hair cut free for a year, and the offer of free vaccination every three months. Every subscriber who pays three yeais in advance will be entitled to a coffin, free of charge, at his death, or in lieu of that article his heirs may have six silver spoons. Mr Fawcett will contribute to the forth- coming number of one of the magazines an article entitled "The Next Reform Bill," in which, dealing with the question of the extension of the county suffrage and redistribution, he will con- sider amongst other subjects the nonresidential franchise in counties, the creation of faggot votes, various schemes of redistribution, and the means of reducing the cost of elections. Mysteries of Administration in Turkey is the name of an article which appears in the Contemporary Review for March. The March num- ber of the Contemporary also contains the following articles: "Ministerial Misstatements on the Afghan Question," by the Duke of Argyll: Bureaucracy in Germany," by Prof. Von Schulte; "The Ver- nacular Press of India," by Mr R. Lethbridge, Press Commissioner; and "A New Theory of the Tides," by Dr Radcliffe. The memoirs of Talleyrand will not, it appears, be given to the world till eight years after those of Matternich. When Talleyrand died in 1838, he left his memoirs to M. de Bacourt. with instructions to publish them thirty years after his death, unless special circumstances should render a longer delay desirable. On the death of M. de Bacourt in 1865 he bequeathed the memoirs to MM. Andral and Chatelain, forbidding their publica- tion till 1888. It is said that the reason for the further delay was certain references to M. Thiers.

A shocking accident happened on Wed- nes^ay in a timber yard in Vauxhall, London, belonging to a Mr Buckley. A temporary staging erected for the storage of timber, suddenly gave way, and some twenty men, women, and boys were buried in the ruins of the fallen structure. Four women were taken out dead, and a fifth expired soon after admission to the hospital. Of the eleven remaining sufferers, two are not ex- pected to recover.

HOUSE OF LORDS.—FRIDAY. The woolsack was occupied by Earl Beauchamp in the absence of the Lord Chancellor. Earl Cowper brought forward the project of establishing a gallery of casts from the antique. Lord Bea- conrfield, in reply, while sympathising with the noble earl's object, referred disparagingly to the present state of the finances of the country," and intimated that when the national exchequer showed an upward tendency, the Government would see what they could do in the matter. Lord Dunraven moved for returns of ejectments in Ireland, and also of the number of cases of intimidation to prevent the payment of rent. The Government declined to issue a return.

HOUSE OF COMMONS—FRIDAY. The debate on the obstruction resolutions was resumed. Sir Stafford Northcote's motion for suspending the order of the day, so that the debate might be continued, gave rise to a pointed discussion. Sir Stafford atked hon. members who had motions on the paper to consent to this unusual course because there was "some impor- tant business which the Government must proceed with next week." Mr R. Power roused laughter by interpreting this proceeding as significant of an immediate dissolution. The motion for suspending the standing order was ultimately agreed to, and the debate on the Government motion was resumed by Mr Shaw, who, while strongly condemning persistent obstruction, suggested that the whole matter should be left in the hands of the Speaker. Mr Shaw emphatically declared and it was only by constitutional, rational, and intel- ligent agitation that Home Rulers could hope to accomplish what they desired. Mr Gladstone, in a brief speech, expressed pleasure at Mr Shaw's remarks. While warmly asserting the duty of maintaining the dignity of the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone pointed out that the exclusion of a member was a punishment to the constituency as well as to the hon. gentleman concerned, and expressed his opinion that the whole decision should rest with the Speaker. The disposition to obstruct, was mainly fostered by the difficulties in which the House found itself in consequence of the immense mass of business it had to transact; for, to use the words ascribed to Prince Bismarck, the English had too many irons in the fire. The debate was continued by Mr Mowbray, Mr Rylands, Mr D. Plunket, Mr 0. Morgan, and Sir C. Foster. The Chancellor of the Exchequer urged at this point that a decision should be arrived at upon the proposals of the Government; but several other speakers prolonged the discus- sion, although Mr S. Lloyd withdrew his amend- ment. A division was ultimately taken upon an amendment by Mr Biggar, who moved that it shonld be looked upon as obstruction for hon. members to move repeated adj ournments after one o'clock in the morning. This amendment was reiected by 290 votes to 14.

HOUSE OF COMMONS.—SATURDAY. The House met at twelve o'clock, and when it adjourned at seven, the Government had suc- ceeded in passing their obstruction resolutions. Several amendments were proposed, among those which excited most debate being one by Mr Callan to the effect that only the Speaker, and not the Chairman of Committees, should be in- vested with the proposed powers. Mr Callan said the Chairman of Committees was generally a violent partisan sitting on the front Ministerial bench. The Chancellor of the Exchequer defied anyone to produce a single case of partiality on the part of the Chairman of Committees of the present House. The greatest difficulty, he said, had been experienced in Committee, and it was necessary to support the authority of the Chair- man. The Government were supported by Mr Childers and Lord Hartington, and on a divi- sion the amendment was negatived by 191 votes to 17. The Government, in a spirit which ex- cited some comment, resisted with one exception all amendments, even declining to accept a sugges- tion by Lord Hartington that the punishment for wilful obstruction should be increased, and that suspension for a week should follow the second in- stead of the third offence. This amendment was supported by Sir W. Harcourt, Mr Forster, and Sir H. James; but the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer adhered with exactness to his own pro- posals. The only amendment he accepted was one by Mr Forster providing that nothing in the proposals should deprive the House of the power of proceeding against a member according to its ancient usage. Mr Dillwyn's motion, declaring it to be inexpedient in the last Session of a Parlia- ment to constitute an untried experiment affecting the rights and privileges of members a permanent standing order, was rejected by 166 votes to 20. The resolutions were then made a standing order of the House.

HOUSE OF LORDS.—TUESDAY. The Lords only sat for fifty minutes on Tuesday, and the business was of little public interest. In answer to Lord Waveney, the Duke of Richmond said it was impossible to say when the report of the Royal Commission on agricultural distress was likely to be communicated to her Majesty.

In a recent edition we published an account of a bushranging outbreak in New South Wales by a band of six robbers. It will be re- membered that after a serious engagement with the culprits one of them was eventually shot dead by Constable Bowen, of Gundagi, and the other five then took shelter in a hut. The police attacked the shanty, and Bowen succeeded in shooting another delinquent dead there. Bowen himself was seriously wounded in the neck, from the effects of which he has since died. A third Bushranger having been wounded in the arm, two then surrendered, and the remaining one escaped. It appears that all the men have now been brought to justice, and the closing scene of the trial of Scott (alias Capt Moonlight) and his companions at Sydney, before Judge Windeyer, excited much interest. The jury returned a verdict of guilty against all four prisoners, but recommended Rogan, Williams, and Bennett to mercy. In answer to the usual question whether the prisoners had anything to say why sentence of death should not be passed, Scott made a long, rambling hifalutin speech, which was thoroughly charac- teristic. In passing sentence, the Judge said that Scott had that facility of speech and capacity for theatrical exhibition which deceived the world, but they did not deceive him or any sensible man they would not impose upon any but those who sympathise with crime. It did nothing but indicate his bad and malignant heart. Addressing the other young men, the Judge said he would convey the recommendation to mercy in their favour to the Executive but he would remind them that the shadow of death was upon them. He then passed sentence of death upon the four prisoners.—Scott was certain to be hanged, but up to the date of the newspaper from which we quote, the Executive had not then given their decision as to whether the sentence should be carried out in all the cases.-Edward Mostyn Webb Bowen, the unfortunate constable who waa killed in the affray, was the son of the Rev. William Wheeler Webb Bowen, present Vicar of Camerese, Haver- ford West, Pembrokeshire, Wales.—Capt. Moon- ap light's (leader of the gang) real name was Andrew George Scott, and was a native of Dublin, Ireland.

THE BANGOR NORMAL COLLEGE. The following is the Government Class List of the Bangor students who passed the certificate examination last Christmas. The names in the first and second division are placed in the order of merit, and in the third in alphabetical order. None were placed in the fourth division, and there was no failure. D. indicates that the student has obtained a certificate of competency as a teacher of Drawing. B, P, and M & E indicate the success of the students in the Science subjects of Botany, Physiology, and Magnetism and Electri- city the figures attached, as Bl, B2, showing the classes in which they were placed in those examinations. BRUTAL ASSAULT UPON A MAN AND His WIFEAT EBENEZER. THE DEFENDANTS HEAVILY PUNISHED. At the County Magistrates' Court on Saturday last, before Mr Whitehead and Capt. Wynn Griffith, John Owen and Michael Pritchard, both of Ebenezer, were summoned by William Jones, also of the same place, with committing a most brutal and unprovoked assault upon him, on the 23rd of last month. There was also another charge against the defendants of committing a similar assault upon complainant's wife, Rose Jones, but it was decided to hear both cases at once. Mr J. A. Hughee, solicitor, appeared for the complainants, and Mr Allanson, solicitor, defended. Mr Hughes, in opening the case, said that John Owen and Michael Pritchard came to the com- plainant's house on the night of the 23rd ult., knocked at the door, walked into the house, and without uttering a word seized the complainant, and dragged him out of the house, and committed the savage and unprovoked assault complained of. William Jones, the complainant, said that on the 23rd ult., John Owen and Michael Pritchard came to his house, and rushed at him. John Owen pulled him out, and Michael Pritchard kicked him. There was nobody in the house but com- plainant's wife and himself. They dragged him to the door, and tried to choke him. When they got him outside, John Owen was on his back and Pritchard at his side. He was on the ground when they kicked him. He could not, do any- thing as he had no shoes on. This was about half- past ten at night. He had done nothing to them, neither did he know the reason why they assaulted him. He did not know that Pritchard struck him, only kicked him. He saw John Owen kick his wife on the eye. Cross-examined: He knew that he was there to tell the truth. He did not know why the assault was committed. His wife was fined XI for an assault upon John Owen's wife some time ago, but complainant did not say that they would have that £1 back from them. They did not say a word when they came to his house from beginning to end. He did not say to Pritchard that he would not have John Owen in his house. He did not see his wife using the poker. Re-examined The defendants opened the door and attacked him and his wife without one word. His body pained him ever since. Pritchard used to come to his house very often, and he thought he was one of his best friends. The coat produced was his, which he wore on the night in question, and was torn by the defendants. Rose Jones, wife of the last witness, said that on the night of the 23rd ult. she was at home with her husband. Both the defendants came to the house. The door was closed, but not locked. They were a little in drink. They came into the house, took hold of her husband, pulled him off the chair, and dragged him to the door, his coat being drawn over his head. John Owen was on his back, and Pritchard was kicking him on his side and knee. There were only herself and her husband in the house at the time. She had taken the poker in her hand, but Pritchard knocked her down. William Jones got her husband up after he had been fear- fully abused. She was then standing by the door, and she received a kick in her eye. John Owan struck her three times, and afterwards kicked her in the eye. She then went for the policeman. She was fined some time ago for assaulting John Owen's wife. Pritchard was ia her house the day before the assault, and was then quite frienaly. Cross-examined She did not send for any of the defendants. She did not follow John Owen out of the house with the poker. She could not account for this assault. William Jones said he remembered Monday night, the 23rd ult., and the first thing he saw was John Owen on the complainant's back, hold- ing him down by the neck. He remonstrated with the man, and pulled the complainant away. Mr Allanson addressed the court far the defence, and asked the Bench was it reasonable to think for one moment that these men would go to the prosecutor's house, and for no cause whatever commit this assault upon the complainant ? He would call witnesses who would prove that com- plainant's wife went to Pritchard's house, for the purpose of asking him to account for some tale that he had been spreading about herself. Pritchard was not at home, so she left a message with his sister desiring him to go to her house when he returned home. When Pritchard arrived home, his sister delivered the message, and he at once went to the complainant's house, taking John Owen with him as a witness to note what was said between them. When they were at the prose- cutor s door, the latter uttered an oath, and swore that he would not have John Owen in his house, prosecutor's wife having been lined for assault upon John Owen's wife, and these words led to the quarrel. Mr Allanson then called Elizabeth Pritchard, Ebenezer, sister of one of the defendants, and said she was in the house about nine o'clock on the night in question, and Rose Jones came to the house asking if "Mike "was in. Witness told her that he was not, when Mrs Jones told her to ask Pritchard to come to her house as soon as he came home. Witness told her brother what Mrs Jones had said, and he went out. He had had a glass," but was not drunk. He went out at once. Cross-examined He did not say where he was going when he went out. He did not say a word but went out. He did not say he would go there and do something to them. John Owen came to their house with her brother, and they both left together. Laura Jones was in the house with witness at the time. When Rose Jones came to her house she asked if Mike was in, and she replied that he was not, when Mrs Jones said, Well, when he does come in, ask him to come to our house." Re-examined: The way that Pritchard and John Owen were together was because each had been out with his wife, and were all returning together. Laura Jones was called, and said on the 23rd ult. she was at Pritchard's house. She saw Rose Jones, and heard her asking the previous witness if Pritchard was in the house, and as he was not, she told the previous witness to ask him would he come to her house when he came home. Pritchard and John Owen afterwards came in, and they went to the complainant's house together. Cross-examined: She was no relation to either of the defendants. Thomas Lewis was called, and said he saw the row. John Owen fell first on the ground, and the complainant was uppermost. Cross-examined: He saw nothing of what took place in the house. The Bench said in their opinion the case was clearly proved against the defendants, and they would be sent to prison for a month each, with hard labour. Prisoners, on being removed, seemed in great consternation at the sentence.

A PUBLICAN HEAVILY FINED. At the Holyhead Petty Sessions on Wednesday, February 25tli, before Major-General Efugheq, Rev J. Richards, Mr H. Edwards, and Mr G. Wil- liams, Richard Evans, Travellers Arms, Llainfain, Holyhead, was summoned by P.O. William Hughes with permitting drunkenness. Mr AUanson, who prosecuted, said the offence was committed on Sunday, January 25th, at half. past two o'clock. The constable on that day" went to defendant's house, and saw David Griffith (against whom a charge of druukennes had been proved) with his wife, and there was no doubt as to their sobriety. This was as bad a case as might be brought before the bench, the offence having been committed en the Sabbath day, and there was nothing that could be said by anyone in favour of the defendant's house. He hoped the bench would inflict a penalty, which would shew that they disapproved of such an offence, and so as to warn this man that drunkenness will not be suffered in this manner, to be the cause of men living in misery and wretchedness day by day. P.C. William Hughes said:—He went to Llain- fain, on January 25th, and called at the Travellers Inn. In the kitchen he saw David Griffith and his wife. They had each glasses before them containing beer. When he went into the house, defendant's wife asked them both to go out as it was near closing time. When the prosecutor saw David Griffith standing, he appeared to him very drunk and staggering. It would be apparent to anyone he was drunk. He called the attention of defendant's wife to the state the man was in, and told her it was a shame for her to see a man leav- ing her house in such a state on the Sabbath day. She said she was not aware that he was so drunk until he went to the yard. When defendant was served with a summons he admitted that the man was drunk, but denied having served him. Cross-examined by the defendant: —I came into the house about 2.30p.m. I only saw two glasses on the table. You did not tell me the man was drunk coming in. I am positive there was beer before him and the wife when I came in. Richard Evans,the defendant, then give evidence. —He said that defendant came to his house about 2.15 p.m. on the day in question, and called for a glass of ale. Witness refused to serve him as he was drunk. Shortly afterwards his wife came in, and called for a glass of ale, which was given to her. Both Griffith and his wife left the house at a quarter past two, and witness would swear that David Griffith was not served in his house. Cross-examined by Mr Allanson: What were the two glasses which were on the table ?-There were four or five. What were the two full glasses ?—There were not two full. You have heard what the constable has said, that there was one full and another partly full r- There were none full. Did you move the glasses when the constable came in ?—Yea, I kept them. Is it a practice to leave glasses partly full of ale before drunken men ?—I left them on the table to tell Griffiths to go out. Did you tell the Constable that Griffiths had no beer ?-He did not ask me. Did he tell you it was a shame for you to see him go unto the street ?-He did. Did you think you would be summoned ?—I told him he was drunk when he came into my house. Why did you not tell him that he had no drink in your house ?—Because he did not ask me. Fanny Griffith said she went to look for her husband on the day in question and found him at the Travellers Inn. She did not see any beer before him. There were two or three empty glasses on the table. She did not notice whether there was beer in them She got a glass of beer there, and the Constable came into the house shortly after her. She heard her husband ask for half a gallon of beer in a jug to take home, and it was served to him. The Constable came in while the jug was on the table. Having listened to the evidence, the magistrates retired for a few minutes and questioned Superin- tendent Davies as to the character of the house. On returning into court the Chairman said they considered the charge satisfactorily proved. A great many complaints had been made to the police of the way in which the house had been conducted. The whole neighbourhood complained of the house, a petition having that day being sent in, having been signed by upwards of two hundred of the inhabitants of Llaingoch and Llainfain. The publicans were repeatedly warned against per. mitting drunkenness, and if they would not listen to advice they would have to bear the penalty. Defendant would be fined X10 and costs, and his license endorsed.
