Negotiations, says the Berlin correspondent of the Morning Post, are now in progress between the English and,German Post-offices for a material reduction of the telegraph tariff. It is proposed that the rate for a 20- words message should be reduced from 7fr., or 6s., to 4fr. only. A shocking case of attempted wife murder has been brought before the Warrington magistrates. An Irish labourer, named Moffatt, quarrelled v. ith his wife, who ran into a neighbour's hwuse for protection. He followed her, and struck her to the floor with his fist. While the woman was lying in that position, he picked up a steel axe and struck her two terrible blows on the head, cleaving her skull open. The woman, who was insensible, and lost an immense quantity of blood, was attended by 4 medical vara and now liita. m » veiv mecarious 04taig,

L T LATEST MARKERS. CORN. LONDON CORN MARKEP, Wednesday.—Market very dull, and little business doing. English and foreign wheat nominally unaltered, but less money must be taken where sales are forced. Flour neglected, and prices barely maintained. Barley without change, both for grinding and malting qualities. Oats quiet at last Monday's rates. Maize flat, aud tending lower. Beans and peas quiet and unaltered. British—Wheat, 300. Foreign—Wheat, 26,340; barley, 910; oats, 30,210; maize, 4,500 flour, 1,980 barrels. GLASGOW CORN MARKET, Wednesday.—At this day't market wheat was dull, and 6d to Is per quarter cheaper. Flour rather lower. Barley firm. Oats and beans a shade easier. Maize unaltered. Mixed American 158 34 per 280 lbs. CATTLE. NEWPORT CATTLE MARKET, Wednesday.—The im- portations from Ireland were not large, but there was a fair supply from the home grazing district, and some good good lots of stock in the hands of the general dealers, Although the supply was not large, there appeared quite sufficient to meet the demand. In the fat beast depart- ment were some prime cattle, but butchers seemed very cautious in consequence of the state of the weather, and a clearance was not effected. There were some most useful lots of young Irish beasts from Ireland, with some good grazing beasts, but rather a dull trade in that kind of stock. Cowfrtand calves were plentiful. None but the best quality commanded attention, very many leaving the market unsold. Something like 2,500 sheep were penned, nearly all, both store and fat, being of good quality, but the principal dealers complained of a dull trade. A good show of lambs, both as to number and quality, and all were sold. An average market of pigs. Good fed pork still scarce, not sufficient to meet the requirements of the trade. A fair business done in stores at late rates, and nearly all disposed of before the market closed. Prices ruled as follows Best beef cattle, 8d to 8d per Ib second quality, 7d to 7d mutton, 9id to 9d lamb, 9d to lOd porkers, 12s Id to 12s 6d. PRODUCE. LONDON PRODUCE MARKET. Wednesday. Sugai market quiet, without alteration in prices. Small public sales, and very little business by private contract. Coffee dull. Plantation (Ceylon) sold irregularly generally, at about Is decline. Low middling, 101s to 102s; middling, 104s to 105s good middling, 106s to 108s. Tea—384 packages Indian sold. Steady market for old, but new season teas meet with little demand, and at easier prices. Spices-sales passing off quietly. Cotton market remains dull. Jute very auiet, without change in price. Tallow (new) about 47s on the spot. f LIVERPOOL PRODUCE MARKET, Wednesday.-Sugar in steady demand at late rates- Rum unchanged. Rice quieter. Coffee—no sales.
