A little girl, named Jane Amelia Bowden, nearlr seven years of age, was on Tuesday last burnt to death at Pembroke Dock. She was the daughter of Mr Charles Bowden, draughtsman, of that town. The child was upstairs when she was burnt. Considerable damage was also done to the room. Yesterday the Muforu Haven regatta took place, and the weather being favourable in every res. pect, the regatta was one of the best ever held in the Haven. There were fourteen events, all of which were well contested. The band of the 95th Regiment played during the afternoon, to the de- light of large numbers of persons who were wit- nessing the racing. After the regatta, the annual dinner was partaken of at the Bush Hotel. The trials of prisoners was continued at the Glamorganshire Quarter Sessions, at Cardiff, yes- terday. James Burns, a labourer, who was found guilty of a larceny committed at Swansea, was sentenced to seven years' penal servitude, and three years' police surveillance. In the case of Dinah Jenkins, a married woman, residing at Aberdare, indicted for ateuling a pawn ticket, the jury could not agree, and the prisoner was reman- ded on bail to the next sessions. Charles Henry Lawler, commercial traveller, charged with enis bezzling money from his late employers, Messrs I Wheeler, Wilson, and Co., sewing machine manu- facturers, Cardiff, was acquitted. Experiments for the purpose of testifying to-the enormous power and comparative safety of dyna- mite were yesterday carried out at Dowlais, under the direction of Messrs Cross Brothers, the local agents of the British Dynamite Company. The experiments, which were witnessed by a large number of people, were highly successful. It is reported that Sir H. M. Jackson, Bart., Q.C., M.P. Lieut.-Col. 0. Lyne, Major J. 1 avies, MajorG. G. Tyler, Mr E. Lister, Mr X C. Hanbuiy, and Mr 1. J. C. Herbert have been appointed Deputy-Lieutenanta for the county of Monmouthshire. Mr Bosanquet, charging the grand jury at tha Monmouthshire quarter sessions, at usk, yester- day, referred to the very depressed state of trade, and said he thought it wa3 attributable to the excessive multiplication of joint stock companies, which could not be managed so successfully as the works of private individuals. The trials of prisoners was afterwaWs commenced, but no case I of importance was disposed of up to the rising of the court. About midnight on Tuesday, a sad explosion occurred at No 22, or John Day's pit, Ebbw Vale. It is reported that several men were killed, and about nine or ten men seriously injured. The pit belonged to the Ebbw Vale Company, and it was visited by large numbers of people yesterday. In the House of Commons yesterday a Select Committee was appointed to join a Select Com- mittee of the House of Lords to consider tha expediency of making further regulations con-t cerning the admission "nd practice of Parliament- ary agents. The second reading of the Real Estate Intestacy Bill was moved by Mr Potter, who explained that its object was to assim liatel I the law affecting real property with that relating to personal property in cases of intestacy. Ha stated that the Bill sought to repeal the present law, which gave an unjust preference to the eldest son over the rest of the family in the case of the death of .the father without having made a will. A long debate followed, in which Mr Lowe, Sir We Harcourt, and the Attorney-General took part, the latter in opposition to the measure. Upon division the Bili was rejected by 175 against 210. An important conference of members of Parlia- ment took place yesterday, when the Rivers Pol- lution Bill was considered. The conference con- sidered that pertion of the Bill which deals with pollution arising from manufactories and mines. The consideration of the remaiding portions o the Bill was deferred. Six hundred Morman emigrants left Liverpoo yesterday, for New York, en ruute for Utah. Messrs Walfskel Brothers, bankers, have sub. mitted to the Chancellor of the Exchequer a plan for the reduction of the national debt. It is stated that the plan, which is under the consideration of the Government, will, if carried out, reduce taxa- tion by so-me millions annually.
