RACES AT ALEXANDRA PARK, CANTON.'.
RACES AT ALEXANDRA PARK, CANTON. Tuesday was the third day of the rrce meeting at the opening of the Alexandra Park, Canton. There was, as might be expected, a much smaller attendance than on tiie previous day (Easter Mon- day), but this is am: ly accounted for by the fact that most Cardithaiis who would be likely to care for racing, had their olidav on Easter Mondav, and had settled down again to work; and this seems more likely to be the case from the, for Cardiff, rather extraordinary attendance of Mon- day, there being quite 10,000 persons in the grounds on that day. The committee had in some degree met this apprehenl led difficulty, by lowering the prices, and there was what might be called a fair attendance. The Militia Band played during the afternoon. The hunters' hurdle race- which was the race of the day-went off capitallv, although the result was, perhaps, almost a fore- gone conclusion. Mr D. L. Lougher's Pendulum (6 yrs) is a first-class animal, quite a different quality horse from any other entered for the race. He is a tall, bony, race-horse, and it is not too much to say that he did his work capitally. The Maid of Gwent (who came in second) is a small mare, of the same age, and of great promise- She rose to the hurdles in first-rate style. The weather on Tuesday was again favourable. The stewards were—Mr Wm. Yorath, Mr J. H. Perty, Ai r E. Frost, Mr R. Brown, and Mr D. Lewis. The judges were Messrs Conquest and Thomas Mr J. Lewis was starter and clerk of the course. Mr Alfred Lewis is the secietary, and he has carried out the duties in a veiy ct edit- able manner. The following is a list of the events The PRINCE OF WALES'S STAKES of 50 sovs. Trotting handicap for bo, ses 13 hands 1 in. and up- wards the first and second in each fieat to trot in the finals: winner of two finals-to receive £35, 2nd £10, 3rd Z5. Blackbird, a splendid trotter, in consequence of her position at the start, led to the end. Jtitty, who was the limit horse, passed all the others except Blackbird, and came in second, t reo lengths behind. On the second time round Little Shamr ck passed Laura, but succeeded in doing nothing more. Kitty trotted well, and it is considered probable that if the course had been longer, she would have been the winning horse. All the others were nowhere at the finish. V- — SECONH FINAL. Blackbird Griffiths 1 Laura Parkes 2 I Kitty .Boothreyd 3 I Young Defence and I/ittle SbajnroCls fc. Blackbird, as before, made the rtin;dh|f whole distance. Laura, iu the last round, tfiade v smart run, and succeeded in nearly collann# Blackbird, but just at this moment both broke, and Blackbird getting into her paces soonest went ahead again, Kitty then taking second place. In the home stretch, however, Kitty lost her place, Laura coming in second, a length behind Black- bird. The LICENSED VICTUALLERS' TROTTING HANDI- CAP of 25 sovs, 13 hands 1 inch and upwards first and second in each heat to trot in final winner of two finals to leceive Y,20, second £ 5. FIRST FINAL. The three horses receiving most start fell behind Plasbach soon after the start, but Pretty Polly kept her position s of first horse after she had obtained it for the whole race, and although Piasbach went well, and 1 broke scarcely on a single occasion throughout, he failed to reach Pretty Polly,v who came in a win- I ner by over a hundred yards, Piasbach next. and Mr Fine's colt, driven in harness, third. Young Slave, a long-legged animal, promised well to be placed in ttie final heat, hut did not show up so well as on t e previous day. In the third round J he broke near the grand stand, and could not be persuaded fcr some time to fall into his proper { pace. SECOND FINAL. ( Pretty Polly Yorke 1 } Plasbach, H ookins 2 1 Mr Fines chesnut colt O-vner 0 ( The same order of things obtained as in the pre- i vious race. Piasbach seemed to be too heavily ( handicapi el, although he trotted exceedingly j well, seldom breking, and keeping his pace evenly 1 throughout. Pretty Polly, with her 200 yards in front, continued to maintain her place to the end. Fine, who .!rove his colt as before, gave up the ( race in the fourth round. Pen- dulum fell behind at the start. Polly stumbled at the fouith hurdle, and was out of the race. Pendulum then took third place, still a long way behiud Maid of Gwent, who was forging ahead splendidly. Pendulum then began to "go," and was very soon neck and neck with Maid of Gwent. On the last corner before the home stretch Pendulum got to the front, and won a good race by about three lengths. TROTTING HANDICAP of 20 sovs, for Ponies not ex- ceeding 13 hands hisrh; winner of two finals to receive JE12 10s, 2nd .£5, 3rd k2 10s. About one miie. FIKST HEAT. Mr T. White Face could not get up to the Canton mare, who trotted in an easy winner by some lengths, SECOND AND FINAL HEAT. The second and final heat lay between Miss David, White Face, and Little Dorritt. Miss David, the winner of the former race. took the lead, and at the last turn for home had increased her lead so m :ch as to render her winning certain. Under her owner's guidance she came in again an easy winner. White Face trotted rat er wild, not settling down to business in the same way as Miss David. White Face was second, and Little Dorritt third. This concluded the dport.-
