CRICKET. COWBRIDGE v. LLANDOVIBF SCHOOL.—The an- nual match between these schools was pi yed at Swansea, on July 19th. Cowbridge won the toss and went in first, aad ran up a score of 126. This was owing to a very fine display of hitting on the part of Mr J. Crosby, who made 81 out of that Hl" he gave three hard chances, but such hitting has sc ireely ever Been equalled on the S • ansea ground. In the afternoon rain very much interfered with the play, and as a conse- quence the match was left undecided, much in favour of Llandovery School, who, when time was called, had made 103 for the loss of five wickets only, Kempthorne beinci not out 27, and Cornish, not out, 12. IMPORTANT TO OWNERS OF PUDDLING…
IMPORTANT TO OWNERS OF PUDDLING AND BALLING FURNACES. To the Editor of the SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. SIR,—An important improvement has much labour and expense been brought to light by a hard-working man ill the bove branch in the Swansea Valley-Mr Henry Parton. By this improvement, as all are interested in puddling will see by a trial, a great saving will be effected both to masters and men. It will be a great boon tu all workers of iron puddling, and cinder bottom balbng furnaces in particular. It has b en tried with great success by a well-known co rpany in this district, viz., Messrs Gilbertsou and ('0. I unrlwsbnrl the inventor is employed by that firm. Matters nre now uei11g arrmued to get the invention registered, and it is hoped that the inventor will meet with the suc- ce-s he dpserve. The thing itself is very sim: le but effective. It consists ct a jet of steam enter- ing- in through an iron trough in the brid.re working all round the furnace, and out through the roof at the flue jamb. The pu hiler can wotk almo-t entirely without using any fetlins, and the ea.;ti 11" will la-t ten years or more, besi les keeping tne f>ott'iiii cool an 1 in goo order.—I am, &e., Morriston, July 17th, 1370. RIVAL VOLUNTEER To the Editm- of the SOUTH WALES DAILY XKW.-S. I SIR,—-T observe in your Saturday's issue a letter from Mr Scrotten, the bandmaster of the Milford volunteer bam!, questioning the recur ICY of the notice I sent you of the scene at the battalion drill at H verfordwest Ja-t week. Hence the cause of the present feeling. I have it Oil Mr Harding's authority that he did refer the Milford bandmaster to the commanding officer, a d I have it on equally goo authority that the Milford band was dismissed. Mr Scrotten claims to teach t onpTior ehFs of music to We want to tight." 1. really beg his pa; don for this, my information wr-s not c ura-e in this respect, the tune played being My urand- f ther's clock." I trll-t my reamus win now form a high opinion of Mr Scr.>tt"n's idea ofcl.isio I can only express liJ" ferret that the clock was so ignominonslv ed. What a musical treat lo At a s eriod of the day a number of the MI. ord Corps rema'ked what a lucky thing it u as that the affair did not end in a genera) ineiee, and d ukl v hinted that if it had the Haverfordwest Baud would hlve been almns: annihilated. LIBERALISM IN WALES.
LIBERALISM IN WALES. To the Editor of the SorTrr WALTS VAlLY NEWS. SIR,—I mi'erstand that a oea'-on ill one of the c a: els of North Wale' recently preferred a re- markable petition, of which the folio, ving is a free translation ;—" O great Lord, Inav it please thee to d- stiov that man in England," (mention- ing a very illustrious parsonage by name), I be- lieve he lives in London, who does so much to distress thi clluntrv h, "iIIJa'I:1.ement 1\11,1 love o bloodshed. If I were to attempt to destroy him thev would innri-mii me. hot ,q Thou destroy him. O Lord, for they cannot imprison Thee." Wlide fa v Welshmen woul cart to subscribe to this, ill""n\1lms su; plication in its present form, there can be iittl; doubt that t ey are gr.dually awaking t > the realiiy that there is something seriously wrong in the management of the country's affairs, something so wrong that they them-elves feel that the lime has come when each man must do all that lie can to re-establish a Government which shall act more in accordance with the wishes of the people. The prevailing opinion in Wales is that the present J'arli .merit do; s aot truly represent the pe >:de, and that the members have forfeite t the confidence of their constituents by the culpable manner in which they have contiuii.d t > disregard their well- known requirements. On this p lint one of the members was recently enlightened. He entered f';di,lJ\le t under the allspices of Librlism, but was careful to support only those measures which promoted by ths Government, and to op; ose or disregard those which he \\(;:1 knew his constituents had largely at he irt. lie called u, on one of them to enquire as to the security of his vote, niii as somewhat discomfited t > leam that his constituent had been c .refully noting all the honourable member's pro- ceedings, and had decided never to vole for him again. This voter, hap; ily for himself, was in a position to defy the malevolence of his perfidious representative, but, unfoitiinateiy, instances iii e not wanting w here depen 'e:.ce has been used with, fatal effect as a means of revenue ag inst refrac tory voters. We learn on reliable authority tha one of the members for North Wales some time ago called upon one of his employes to "solicit the favour" of his vote, hut was met with a respectful denial. He at once turned on his eel, thanking the man for his attention. But the mat'er did not end here. The steward from that moment that employe, and, in a short time afterwards a trivial, and hitherto oar- donahle, otfence was considered sufficient reason for his imme iiate dismissal. Then followed in sail consequence, for the times were bad, empty cupboards, stockingless feet, and all the dismal paraphernalia of overty. The loquacious Londoner is f-er ready to enun- ciate very marvellous and macular opinions on every pasil1! Rubjed in train Of 011 omnibus, ard more amnsicir than harmful. We have at luesent iu mind the ludicious picture of an itineiant dealer in shrimps who, although attired in filthy rags, with hare head and breast, thought it his duty all a Briton to har ngue his neihbours in au underground carriage on the disastrous effects of Gladstonian policy. But Welshmen who have for so long been "ilent 0:1 pnlitics will, wh-n they speak, command attention. Since tiie of Chartism and R..1eccaim no such indignation and political antagonism to the "powers that be" has been felt in Wales as that v. h'ch has arisen while watching the act on of the Government in respect to the Bulgarian atrocities, the naval and militaiy dis- plays at Besika Bay and Malta, the Afghan invasion, an 1, lastly, the Zulu war. But if any- thing had been wanting to complete the irritation of Welshmen, the deficiency has been amply sup- plied by the contemptuous treatment which the question of intermediate education for Wales has received at the hands of Her Majesty's Ministers. Much has been justlv urged against the common system of Welsh mini-ieis < f religion alhr ssing their congregations on political matters, but the anxious on this ointmay rest assured that Wels1 men nowadavs are in no such danger of overlook- ing their duty in political matters as to require any minister to step aside from his work of preaching the gospel, to awaken the people to a due sense of their political responsibilities. On the contrary, there is ample evidence to show that Welshmen, who have hitherto refrain d, from a fancied sense of security, from interfering with poliiics, and have suffered themselves calmly to be led to the < oiling booths to vote according to the wishes of their employers, without giving themselves the mental trouble d ascertaining what the system i which the affable candidate will support, feel that it is their duty, in the present state of affairs, to exercise every care in selecting a member ho shall be truly a representative of the peoplp, and many a Conservative member who now enjoys the double honour of representing a Liberal constituency will be startled from his pleasing slumber to find at the next general elec- tion how far this determination has seized the minds of the Welsh people.—-I am, &c., LIBERAL.
THE MERTHYR BOARD OF HEALTHI…
THE MERTHYR BOARD OF HEALTH I AND THEIli TROEDiRHIW SEWAGE FARMS. T-i t;ie E,,itf r,.)f tlte SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWH, SIR, — L noticed a fe.v weeks ago one of the members of the b()a d making inquiries res| ecti the financial returns of this farm for last year, and asking the farmer to make a repoi t how the loss or 2."i per cent ha occurred in the receipt of his farm. I congratul ate the above member. IIo.v far the farmer succeeded I don't know but of this I am certain, if the farm lost 25 per cent last year, it will he sure to lose 30 s er cent this year. A few years ago the tann was a credit to the board, but. of ltle years it is growing worse every year. This far u «as, before ever the sewage was applied to it, one of tlm best pieces of land in Glamorganshire; hut, much to the loss of the parish, this (arm is hndnr a considerable lot of money every year, and is still going worse. As a farmer and a hea> y ratepayer of th" above i'ari]¡, I will en ieavoui to give a biid's-eye view of the farm as it is pies.uit. This year the board has a piece of laud in their own ban Is, which was let list year for £10 per acre. I shall be greatly surprised if the boa.rd will realise £ o per acre for it this year, to say nothing about the labour on it. Ag lin take the cabbage and mangolds. They seem to he doing very poorly so far. Oats again are look iig much better than I expecfed, considering thesttethe grouni v. a< in when they were put in. Wee Is again are growing in abundance, but what wonder ? I say the g onlll ought to he plollghell as soon as mangolds and swedes are off the ground, but on this farm last year the ground was not ploughed till the spring. If the pround had been ploughed the severe frost we had last year would have killed all the insec's, etc., and have seasoned t!:e groun 1 to a great extent—especially groimd that is work, d every year like this. In conclusion, I maintain that this matter is well worthy the attention of the Chamber of Trade for Merthyr, and I would suggest to them to appoint a farmer from their owrf parish to draw up a report on the pre-ent condition of the farm, an 1 what remedy it requires.—Yours. &c.. THE PEMBROKE BOROUGHS.
THE PEMBROKE BOROUGHS. To the Editor of fie SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. SIR,— Kindly permit me to make, through the 11 edimn of your columns, a few observations upon what appeared in the last is<ue of your contem- porary, the Welshman, respecting the retirement of Mr Reed from the representation of the Pem- broke Boroughs. Having had, for 20 ypars past, the closest in- timacy with this constituency, and su,ce Mr Reel's connection been his agent, I have had, if not more opportunities th n others, I may claim without undue conceit, at leait as many as any- one, of judging and knowing the feelings u hich have existed on the parts of that constituency and Mr Reed respectively, and I can emphatically state that never were they of a more co>dial kind than they have been during the last 12 months. Nothing wider of the mark could appear than the misstatement of the Welshman, that there was a manifest coolness between them, whieh has at least grown into open disaffection." The red c se is quite the reverse-as the feeling of respect and for -Nlr Reed has constantly increased since his election. This is no biassed view, but -t well known fact to every one who knows the boroughs, or who has paid the slightest attention to the en- thusiastic receptions, accompanied s they were by every demonstration of respect and admiration, accorded to Mr Reed on those occasions when he has visited the boroughs, to render au account of his stewardship, as well as upon those other oc- casions when the purport of his visits was of a general character, such as inspecting his enter- prizes at Pennar, the .Milford Docks, laying foun- dation stones.^ or other undertakings—or even presiding at elstedlfmbn. The frank cordiality of the kindness evinced towards him was always so demonstrative and palpable, that for unyone to come to the conclusion ex: ressed iu the issue of the WeJshnvm, of the 18th inst., is utterly inex- plicable, when it is remembered that t he sincerity of th Welshman s statements and views are 11.1- ways above suspicion. I am also in a position to combat the statement ns to Mr iteed's certain de- feat rt the next election as, instead of defeat, a recent examination of the ,.ta:e of the register shows most conclusively th t a cert in and mo-t triumphant success woul 1 result lo Mr Reed were he to coute-t tee.-e boroughs again. Those who supported Mr Re d at the l.wt elec- tion o. in r to political considerations only, cannot l)d d s-aH-died, for he has fulfilled every obligation lie then made, and those who were influence by co itmercial and trade nnticipa'ions cannot lie dis- appointed and displease surely, seeing the sub- s ant al character of the un lertakings he ha; fostered, promoted, and established. The immen-e pers n d expenditure these enterprises have in- curred is easily conceived, indeed, so general has been the appreciation of the 6- na 1i le character of these t at many electors who opposed him in 1874 have been caudii enough to publicly declare their future support,^or the a ithdrau al (if their further opposition to him. The Conservative agents in these boiough=, knowing the effect produced by Mr Meyrick's absenteeism and the do-nothing policv whicrh lie has always exhibited and practised, and also knowing that it was an effect v hich was rapidly expanding as the time and prospects of a dissolution g-ew nearer, Fey despaired of being able to sho-,v to the lea 1-rs of the party any convincing proofs of the shadow of a prospect of suceess if any gen- tle nan could be ra-h enough to oppo-e him. To fall back upon Mr Meyrick was an alternative the contemplation of uliich could not afford the most sanguine of them much satisfaction, as they knew, as all in the borough kne r. that Mr Meyrick's absenteeism, and his rigid abstention fro." co- operation in any project to benefit the locality, had worked their natural effect, and sho ved con- clusively that to fight with a candidate who had systematically acted so as to forfeit every claim npon loc; I consi, fer I ti, ,n was to court certain defeat. Mr Meyrick, it cannot be denied, might have been a stron.; and dangerous opponent had lIe turned the. unequalled a 'vantages and influence adherent to the ositiou of a large landed proprietor to a proper account, but since he has so ruthlessly negleeted there and the claims of the locality upon him, what would have been Ids strength, if judiciously made use of, will be his stumbling block, and the cause of certain failure. The cons ituency cannot forget that after his defeat in 1874 he seveied is connection with every institution in the boroughs, thus cnttinl; anrl treating friend and foe alike, and since then he has scarce been seen or his name heard in Pembroke- shire in fact, in every sense a dead to these boroughs as when he was its silent representative in Parliament. What a contrast his was to what we subsequently experienced in the enlightened and inflential representation of Mr Heed. Hav- in felt the satisfaction of such representation, the constituency wi!l surely endeavour to avoid the humiliation and mortification it must suffer if a gentleman w ith no other claim than that lie po.s"se broad acres should be i-e.tiriie(I-for it. The elevate nature of Mr Reed's representa- tion is mo e e'early evidence I when a comparison is made with it, and such a representation as can be afforded by gentlemen of Mr Meyrick's stamp. The high status of one, and the low of the other, re immediately apparent; and the strength and infh.ie ceofone, and the weakness and helplessness of the other, are best understood when thus viewed as contraries. If the Welshman is desirous of a, vocating Mr Meyrick's prospects, let it bstaiu from mentioning his name in conjunction with the name of Mr Reed, as it could not commit a greater blunder than to force a comparison between the intellectual gialltry and reputation of Mr Repd and these qualities, such as they are, of Air M-vrick. Those of the latter gentlemen are d-yarfed to such iufini'esimal proportions that microsc uue aid is required to perceive them. j he Welshmwl refers to Mr Meyrick possessing strong local influence." It seems to forget that local negiect and lr-cal influence are incompatible. What has Mr Meyrick done to benefit the locality ? Nothing not a single project has he snppor: ed to the extent of a single share. Every inducement was made to him to assist in the Co- operative Shipbuilding Society, to invest in the Milford Engineering and Shipbuilding Company, ■and in the Milford Docks, but not a penny would lie eitib irk in them. People say he is a good landlord so he may be, when to he considered good he only takes 03 in the £ for the rent due to him. It almost appears from the slavish manner these utterances are spoken by Conserva. tive organs, that the tenants of Mr Meyrick should be grateful to him that he does not demand seme- thing more than the obligations under their tenancy agreements require. I have the satisfaction of knowing that, much as the Liberals regretted and dep10red the sever- ance of Mr Reed, they never entertained the idea of defeat, or despaired of success but, on the contrary, one feeling only possesses and animates the party the certainty of a certain victory. Whoever may be so- lected by the candidate committee, and finally adopted by the general committee will receive a loyal sup- ort from the Liberal electors and with the aid of a highly-satisfactory register, a crushing and over,, lieiiiiiiig defeat only awaits the gentle- man of local influence which the Welshman indi- cates as the Tory candidate at the coming contest. -I am, &c., G. M. SINNETTE. Martin's House, Pembroke Dock, 21st July, 1879. To the Editor of the SOUTH WALES DAILY NEws. Sin,—At the meeting of the Liberal electors of Ptmbroke Dock, on the 17th instant, called for the purpose of hearing an important communi- cation from Mr Reed, and which, I need hardly say, was a terrible blow to the Liberal cause of the borough, another resolution of importance was carried unanimously, which the reporter of that meeting did not think fit to notice. The re- solution was calculated to, and has, set in motion a power that, for certain reasons given at the above meeting, lay dormant, viz.:—" That this meeting send a request to the chairman and secre- tary of the Liberal Association, asking them to convene a meeting of the members, in order to consider the previous resolution, and to communi- cate > ith the other divisions of the borough, with the view to the formation, on the Birmingham nIall, of an elective body for choosing a suitable Candidate to tight th" bittle of the Liberal party at the next general election."—I am, &c., TR UTH,

----------THE KEPltESENTATEON…
THE KEPltESENTATEON OF CARDIFF. T) the Editor of the SoUTH WALES DAILY NEWS. I Sllt,-I am very pleased to ob EM; iliat the Liberal Two Hundred arc summoned for Tuesdav, "f< r the putpo e "f selecting a candidate to contest the Cardiff borougi s in th; Liberal interest at the next general electiou," an 1 that two such good men, as Mr Reed and Mr Stitt undoubtedly are, have consented to be nominated. It must be giatif ing to ail genuine Liberals to feel that iu the event of eituer being chosen, the party would be well and efficiently represented but befoie coming to the of deciding between the gentlemen named, I consider each member of the association should be governed ill his choice by two questions :—1st, Would sound Lineralism be represented by either candidate? 2nd. Which of the two is the stronger man to run, *tt;«l consequently th, most likely not I to carry the seat, but to keep it ? N > v as to the first question, I think there can be no doubt of the Liberadsm of both. I was in Birkenhead when Mr Stitt contested that borough against the sitting member Mr Maclver.and heard him speak at se.eral of his meetings. I can testify from all I aT 301111 heard that he is au effective šoeaker, a gentlem. n of high repute, and held "iIl much estimation in that town, and I do not kilo, that they could have a better man for that constituency, but what e have to consider i<—Which is the best mall for Cardiff With regard to Mr Ree 1 I will say nothing. Unlik • M>- Stitt, who is a comparative stranger to Cardiff, Mr Reed's position and capabilities are thoroughly well known to all of us. S ich being the case, there can be no hesitation in my mind as to the answer to be given to the second question. Iu any sei se—political, commercial, and shipping —Mr Reed is the man for Cardiff, and, in going in for bin, I am sure even our opponents will dmit we shall go in for a strong man, who is b to win.—I am, &c., July 21. "THE POWE OF IMPROMPTU SPEECH."
"THE POWE OF IMPROMPTU SPEECH." Tj the Editor of the SOL'TH WALKS DAILY NEWS. SIB.—Under the above heading a letter, signe 1 "Cromwell,' appeared in your issue of Friday. With your permission, I would like to point out to yonr numerous readers the fact that. after the first two or three sentences, the subject matter of the letter in question is taken in exteaso from one of Spurgeoa's "Lectures to Students," on The Faculty of Impromptu Sprech." Such an attempt to achieve literary distinction may now bo et»tiuiated at its due worth. If the example of plagiarism th is furnished with such unblushing etbontory by your correspondent be generally followed, it will prove an evil equally contemptible and as much to be deplored as im- promptu-thinking ministry, When next Crom- well" desires to figure in piint, let him appear in hi own clothes, or refrain altogetlJer-a course which—unless he can abstun from adopting another man's language—many of yonr readers would doubtless prefer.—I am, &c. .--THE CARDIFF AND SWANSEA…
THE CARDIFF AND SWANSEA SMOKE- LESS STEAM COAL CO., LIMITED. To the Editor of the SOUTH WALES DAILY NEWd. SIR,—Mr Lewis, in his letter of Monday, has not hit the blot in the management of this com- oany. Whilst the company are losing £5,000 a year, the directors and officers in London are receiving £3,000 a year for doing next to nothing. All this should be stooped at once, and the offices of the company be removed either to Cardiff or Swansea. Rigid economy in every department could be then more completely ensured; and until the shareholders effect this change, I have little hope of bringing the accounts square, which is all that we can expect to do until times mend. We the payment'to the vendor, as we have agreed, to pay it, but we can, by a vote, make the alterations I suggest, which will be, at all events, a step in the right direction.—I am, &c., A SHAREHOLDER.
NOTES ON AGRICULTURE. -
NOTES ON AGRICULTURE. tBY A PRACTICAL FARMER.I COBX. I,ONI)ON, wea,her has still been unfavourable for wheat and other cereals over the greater part of the kingdom. Not that there has been tiie continuous ram wiiich occurred through the RplÍlIg alld UP to the second week of this month, but tiie absence of sunshine is very re- markable and extraordinary. The juices of cereal plants cannot be elaborated into a quality that will i roduce a fair yield, either as regards quan- tity or value per quarter, under such conditions. Frolll France, Hungary, and Germany, and all corn-growing countries in Europe, excepting Southern Russia, tiie reports are equally uiifavour- able. America is the only other country, besides the banks of the Volga and the lower Danni e, that is able to make a favourable report. In these circumstances it is not to be wondered at that prices for home-grown wheat have again increased from 2s to 3s per quarter. At Wakefield yester- day the rise was fully 2s per qua ter for home- grown, and Is for foreign saini les. A similar rise on the week occulTed at Mark-lane. The large supplies of foreign alone kept prices from rising as rapidly for quantities in stock. the end of this ill be at home I shall consider more fully below. The top price of town flour is now 43, per sack, or a vise of about 3s oil the v. eek. Ballev and maize have followed the rise of wheat, but of the former—except for grinding purposes—there is little or none to deal in, Clover seed, at the same time, has excitell specu- I.ttoi- ,s th,-re i-i btit little Tirosl)ect of fair ield this year. Oats, in consequence of a large supply, are witnout any material change in value. THE GROWING CROPS. A few observations on this very important topic just now may be opportunely recorded here. As I intimated iast week, I have again been through the Midlands, and the result is my present im- pression is more unfavourable than it was when I ha l been to Exeter, Oxford, and the Midlands a month ago. If I recall the fact that much rain has fallen and but little sun has smiled on the growing crops, I need not enter into an elaborate statement of my observations. But I may say that all kinds of crops—wheat, barley, oats, pulse, mangold, and turnips—are the least pro- lnLfng that I ever remember them, the year 1818 not excepted. Mangold cannot be an average crop, but turnips may recover, as swede sowing has generally been too early of late years. My estimate of cereal crops, at the same time, is that no weather can make the quality gooi, while the quantity cannot be much less than one-third under an average. Grass and clovers, too, whether they be standing or cut, are rotting on the ground. I know something of hay-making. In 1848 I was eight weeks and three days in getting together 150 acres of hay, while in 1849 I gathered the same quantity in fine order in 17 'lays. I need not say the quality of the former year was bad,but my experience that year was not worse than istliatof tlleownei-sof thomandsof acres at the present time. I have seen only two or three new stacks, but around London on the wet pastures of .Middlesex, Kent, and Essex, where London dung is applied with no niggard hand, there are cocks standing with the aftermath six to nine inches high around them, as they have been there in one form or other sines the middle of June. This is a doleful picture, but it is useless to with- hold observations of this importance. What the result will be—coming as this disastrous season does on the top of previous agricultural depression —I need scarcely speculate upon, as the end is obvious. The previous depression has been acknowledged by many landlords in returns of rents. But I hear that some agents are ridiculing the idea of depression—that is, hard times for f armers—being in existence. One farmer consulted his neighbours over his books, and the verdict was a loss of several hundred pounds— over a pound per acre. The farmer communi- cated this well-considered statement to his laud- lord's agent. The reply was not overburdened with eloquence, but it was intelligible and impres- sive, as it consisted in the ii That mode of treating the subject is, I hope and doubt not, exceptional, for although 1 agree that I it is useless tf) sit down and cry over spilt milk, that is no reason why insult should be added to iniurv. LIVE STOCK AND MEAT. There is still a fair demand for stores on account of the exce.s of grass and the bad w eather lor hay- making. The fat-stock trade was heavy etilv in the week in consequence of of 1,400 head of American cattle i aving landed at Liverpool ti.e h-tter part of last week, and 1, 400 an.! oil t simultaneously at Dept- for Informa: ion ,,f ;i,|jese animals, iiou ever, checked the tradiuj 'of home dealers, and the short home supply' the latter part of the week made average in ices. I I the carcase markets, too, where trade was greatly depressed, as I pointed out last Saturday, there has beeu a. full recovery, as country butchers held back iheir usual weekly supplies in many in- stances. S o:t supplies to-day made the trade comparatively brisk, although the weather is very warfll and murky. A MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE. This is hardly a correct term for a new Minster ill anticipation, as the office is to be comnined with the general care of commerce as well. But it is another point gained to have it acknowleged that agric.il ure needs an official in the Gover- nment to give at least half his attention to the re- quirements of our national agriculture. But I am so incredulous on the professions of any Government, be they ptofes-ed "farmeis' friends" or other- II ise that I dl) not see what good can come out of this inte uled appointment, or, perhaps, I shsiud say, creation. I fear the result will again be- after the figure of a high ancient Huthority-" as dust to the eyes." No Minister in Downing- street can do any good till tenant farmers are placed on the same footing in regard to county and local business as landowners and county magistrates occupy. Iqllitaifreewitb a head centre for receiving reports and giving such advice as that experience affords. But a Minister of Com- merce and Agriculture must prove to be abortive Îil re ud to the hit'er bianch of the nation's business, while the men who pay the county and local taxes are without represent; tion a'- the tables where these legal contributions are dispose I of.
THE TIN-PLATE TRADE.
THE TIN-PLATE TRADE. THE QUESTION OF WAGES. TheP-Executive Committee of the Glamorgan- shire and Carmarthenshire Tin-plate Association held a mcetinfatthe Cameron Arms Hotel, Swan- sea, on Monday, when a three hours' discussion took place upon the question of wages. An adjourn- ment till Thursday was then agreed to, when some recommendation will be arrived at, to be commu- nicated to the quarterly meeting, which takes place on that day.
