LATE GI^EUAL NEWS. A fire occurred between two and three o'clock yesterday morning, which resulted in the destruction of the premises of Mr. Stoneham, cigar manufacture r,Dockhead, Bermond- sey. The inmates, who were in imminent danger, were rcscued by means of a fire-escape. An alarming accident occurred yesterday morning on the London and North Western Railway, near Bletchleyt to a train which was returning from London to Rugby, Coventry. Birmingham, and Wolverhampton. When near Bletchley goods train ran into the passenger train, up- setting the engine, which rolled over the embankment, breaking the guard's van, damaging the carriages, and in- juring the roadway. The greatest consternation prevailed for some time among th" passengers, some of whom, how- ever, through the violence of the concussion, were rendered senseless, but a large number fortunately escaped with merely a severe shaking. The accident has resulted in thirteen persons being severely injured, and one it if teared wiU not recover. The guard saved his life by leaping from the train. Another telegram states the accident was caused by some confusion as to the signals.

SliSau'ijAK u £ LLTSIuN. On Satuiday a well-dressed woman spoke to the constable on duty at Old-street station, London, and told him that she had a most important communication to make. She was taken to Mr. Inspector Peel, when she said that she had committed a most heinous offence and knew that she must pay the extreme penalty of the Jaw and die for it. She thpn proceeded to say that her name was Taite, and that she was superintendent night nurse at the Shorerlitch Workhouse, Kin j^sland-road that she was jealous of the matron, a Mrs. Mays, and for a long time past had enter- tained a feeling of revenge th",t about four o'clock in the r.rternoon or that day the matron entered her ward, when Taite knocked her down, and she was stunned by the fall. After this she obtained a razor, which had for a long time been carefully concealed, and cut the matron's throat from ear to ear, after which she wrapped up the body in the bed clothes and concealed it under the bed. Inspector Peel then questioned her, and she replied that after she had hid the body a feeling of remorse came over her. She knew that the absence of the matron would be noticed,a searca made, and everything known so she got a pass for leave, and in- tended trying to make her escape, but afterwards thought there would be no chance of success, and that she had better give herself up to the p lice. Her demeanour and the production of a pocket handkerchief covered with blood led to a supposition that some grave matter was at the bottom of the affair. The self accused was detained and left in the charge of the detective officers, while Mr. Acting-Superin- tendent Harnett and Inspector Peel proceeded to the Shoreditch Workhouse and made inquiries. They found Mrs. Mays living and quite well. inquired about the nurse Taite, aad went to her room. Inspector PeAl with great difficulty got through a small window, and found the apartment in the greatest disorder. After getting the door open the officers commenced a search they found the bed stripped of the clothes, and under the bedstead a long bundle they got this out, and upon opening it discovered a bolster, but no human body. The officers then returned to the police station and had the woman Taite examined by a surgeon. He declined to state whether she was suffering from in- sanity or not, and therefore she was sent back to the wcrk- house in charge of two detectives, with instructions t« the master and matron to have her placed under special supervision.

A moderately active demand exists to-day for accommodation, and the rates of discount are quoted in Lombard street as follows :— Bank Bills-2 and 3 months, j per cent; 4: months, It per cent; 6 months, 11 to 11 per cent. The announcement of an armistice having been igreedupon by Turkey for one month, caused the .Stock markets to open with some buoyancy in prices, foreign stocks being quoted fractionally higher, and English railways a'so improving upon the top prices of last night, whilst English Consols were steady—96 £ Later on, however, there was a geuerai relapse in consequence of the absence of business. Turkish lost the rise of the morning, and Hungarian and Russian were lower. There was alao a slight decline in French and ftalian.
