SPECIAL TRADE REPORTS. I [FRO!! OCR OWN COKItESPdKDENTS ASH BKCLUSITE SOURCES.] THE GRAIN TRADE. [SPICCIAL REPORT FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 LONDON, Friday.—There is no fresh feature in the grain trade,—no abatement of firmness noticed but at the same time the dt mand has been rather leps active, Home deliveries of wheat have been only moderate, but foreign importations have been up to the average, Millers have pursued their usual cautions policy, opera- ting solely from band to iiiolith hence but little busi- neôg has be> n done. Still the transactions effected have been at the full prices of last week. The best white English wheat is worth about 50s, and red 48s per quarter. There is no prospect of any immediate move- ment in the trade, either for an advance or decline, but steadiness may be expected to prevail. The quantity of British wheat disposed of at Mark Lane during the week ending September líltb, was 3,384 quarters, and the aver- age price 49s. Barley, ;1\12 quarters, average 42s 5cl, and oats, 297 quarters, average 26s fid per quarter. Barley has ruled very firm. Oats and maize have been quite as dear, and beans and peas have sold at late rates. The flour market has betn firm.
NORTH OF ENGLAND IRON AIsD…
NORTH OF ENGLAND IRON AIsD OOAL TRADES. r-ipgclal, REPORT FROM Offt OWN MIDMJBSKOKOUGH, Thunclay.-The iron trade has, during the present wetk, shown a somewhat improved tone. There has been more inquiry for pig iron, and prices have been firmer. This is consequent upon the better financial feeling which is now current. The month's bills have just been met and a.11 has passed off favourably, so that the probability of mIre hilun's is greatly lessened. This naturally gives a more hopeful aspect, to commercial affairs generally, and under this influence both makers and merchants are asking higher prices for pig iron. There is also combined another cause to make producers firmer. It is believed that there will be a great reduction of the make cf iron, and this is lik^lj', it is believed, to make urices better, It is hardly likely that, creditors, especially where their prospects are not good, will permit insolvent firms to continue making iron at a lo,s. Th is it seems pretty certain that atter the meetings about to he held, soAe of the works will be stopped. If they conid not be carried on successfully in t-vosperous times they cer- tainly cannot in such times as these, and the sooner, therefore, they are brought to a stand the better. There is a considerably improved demand for finished iron, and especially plates. Rails must be excepted, as they show no animation. This will appear by the fact that during the present year the shipments from Mid- dleshoroiigh and Kartiepool. where the main shipments of rails take place, have not been more than 500 or (iOn tons per m^nth. C-mtrasted with this the Welsh trade shows much more favourable results. During the year the shipments from the ports u ('a-diif and Newport of rails have been less than in -t month, and gem-rally far in excess of that figure, running up to 20,000 tons. It is prooable that there have been more ra'issent inland in the (Jieve'aud district than in Wales, but'evnji when this is taken into consideration t'ture is >ti!l a con- siderable margin left in favour of the production of the Principality, showing that relatively there has been more trade than 111 Cleveland. This makes good the constant assertion of the Cleveland manufacturers that they are ahvaye outdone by their Welsh competitors on account of the lower prices taken by the latter. Price are now, it is affirmed, from f>s to 7s (id lower in Wales than in it Clev.aud, where tiie ri 'ure for ordinary rails is not less than 17s fiti, and nothing to be made, generally speak- ing, at that. though the rail trade ii slack, the plate trade is im- proving. There is a much better demand reported for the last week or two, and orders have been received, which is having the effect of inducing manufacturers to ask higher rates. The iron shipbuilding department is looking more healthy. The plate trade, it is hoped, will coon Hecure orders which will tide it over the winter. The general figure for plates is about £ 7 2s fid, though g ime manufacturer's are asking more. There is a stead/ trade also doing in bars. The price of ordinary bars is about JI; ?;g puddled bars, t4 2s fid to i'4 os. The coal trade is rather better, so far as households are concerned. Prices remain about the same. Some of the c()ke ovens have been put out, as there is a less quantity of coke required. The steam coal trade continues brisk. Prices unalteied. The wages question in the Durham coal trade has been brought before the arbitrators, who, being unable to agree, have remitted it to the umpire for consideration.
