GYNTLF,MZN I have now the opportunity of fulfilling my long cherished anticipation of offering my services to you as your Representative in Parliament. After undertaking last year to do this, I was called upon by the liberal f party of the large seaport Town of Hull to offer mysel for an unexpected death vacancy in its representation, and was very nearly successful, notwithstanding many disadvantages. In entering 011 the contest, however, I refused to break my pledge to offer you my services at the general Election; and having since received a very powerful requisition, signed by 8,300 householders, to stand for Hull on the present occasion, I have preferred to fulfil my obligation to you. The Royal Dockyards often suffer, as you well know, from the want of Representatives in Parliament who thoroughly understand them. The closing of your Dock- yard has several times been seriously contemplated during my recollection. We had a great difficulty in getting authority to commence iron shipbuilding there, and the character of the Establishment for excellence of workmanship is being taken away by repeated attacks in the House of Commons. Now my tiaining vv &i dockyard> lny subsequent charge of Dockyard Admiralty, and my close acquaintance with the work done in private firms, all fit me to watch over your interests, and this is one reason why I offe you my services. l The shores of Milford Haven are well adapted for shipbuilding, engineering, and other industrial operations, and while so many of the great towns and cities of Eng- land choose their members of Parliament with a careful regard to their commercial interests, your district remains neglected, because you have neglected this consideration. iVLy large connections with commercial firms and iVLy large connections with commercial firms and Foreign Governments will enable me to serve you materially iu this respect, but my power and opportunities will be much increased if I am selected as your Parlia- mentary Representative. ^rom l°cal interest to broader ones, I offer whirh iL e vu r,Ce fmember of that great Liberal party andtJctmmerri»rilJreaiBritainit8 r^ions' its s"cial' nared to lahnnr LRE om an^ greatness, and I am pre- "reat benefits > contend for the extensions of these 3 minution fVv, herTtban submit any reactionary ofX present ?Cm- 1 am n° for aU the acte proveand m,SVernmenV °Tf S0Pe of them I disap- the acts of indix a T16. disapprove of some of have never hiu .113;1. mmisters- You well know that I right to do so.
