Football enthu- siasts ha-d some hopes that the team would beat Aberavon, but these hopes were shattered when it was made known what players had journeyed to the seaside. Schofield, the full back, was absent, and the team can ill-afford to lose the services of such a sound custodian. Lewis Lewis and Jere I Bebb. the two wings, did not turn up, the latt,er now failing to fill his position for the third time in succession. It is not considered likely that he will play for Treorky again, and, as regards Lewis. it is a pity that such a player does not appear in the black jersey more regularly. Of the forwards, several of the best did not put in an appearance. Bob Jones was slightly indisposed; Ramsey stayed at home, with the object of assisting the Abergorky team in the tug-of-war competition, but he was unable after all to place his ser- vices at the team's disposal. There were also other absentees, Isaac Lewis being among them. Next to nothing could be expected of a team consisting of substitutes to such a great extent, and it is only fair to say that had the team against Aberavon included the players named the score would have been on tke other side. But it is of no use to speak in this way. If the team is to do anything in the coming matches, a good many of which will be played under the auspices of the league, there must be hard training and combination. To-day Pill Harriers are to visit Treorky. It is, of course, a very difficult matter to guess the result, especially when it is not known who will turn out for the homesters Next Thursday (Christmas Day) Treorky visit Tre- herbert. This will be the second game between the rivals this season. The first ended in favour of Treorky. The same teams will meet at Treorky on January 17. and in February. On Boxing Day Treorky visit Maesteg, but. it is not a league match. Earlier in the season Maesteg beat Treorky on the former's ground by three tries to one. This day week the Hartlepool Barbarians are exacted on the rail-field. The tug-of-war match between Abergcrky and Pentre, which torvk place on the Fairfield on Saturday, created some excitement, and drew a good number of spectators. A chal- lenge bad been made to pull the best five out of nine, and Pentre succeeded in the first five. It most be understood that the challenge has not yet been finally decided. owing to the return not halving taken placie. Pentre's easy win is locally attributed to absenteeism in the Abergorky team. "Two of the many substitutes who bad to be included in the Treorky team on Saturday were found at Aberavon. Bayliffs. who bad been playing a fine game. had the misfortune of injuring his knee, and wu. consequently, forced to retire. This »iiiw»riitari Uu iitlidtural of Wtitot jfmn
OUR FOOTBALL SKETCHES.
OUR FOOTBALL SKETCHES. CARDIFF v. CAMBRIDGE MATCH. A Good Game and Narrow Victory. AN ARTIST'S IMPRESSION OF FOOTBALL. There wae lightlieartedness in my step as I wended my way towards the Ca/rdiff Arms Paxk on Wednesday, for I had not seen the blue and blacks perform since the Llanelly maitch, having been oil a rather lengthy crusade among the football "satellites" of the "hills." Cardiff had been reported to hare petorned to form since their dismal defeat at New- port's hands three weeks ago, and I feit a certain amount of hope arising in my breast of actually seeing a good game for on-oe, and, lo, and behold! I was not doomed to disap- pointment. Having situated myself comfortably in tibat little "yellow" box on the stand, which is I such an object of curiosity, I diverted my attention to what proved to be the beet game I have seen on the park this season. I do not say this in tiie heat of enthusiasm, bxat can reiterate the ertatement after much calm cold-blooded reflection, and there was such I a phethora of incident that I could almost things, which called forth umstinted approval from the crowd. Cardiff's scoring all occurred in the first half, and the would-be critics agreed tha-i, the home lot fel] away in the second modety. Now I cannot say that I concur with titis idea at all. as I think that the blue and blacks played just as well in the second half as before. The fact was that by this time the Light Blues had warmed up a. bit, and, playing in greatly improved fashion, made the pace pretty warm, and I think had tihey shown such ability in the first half, as I have said before, there might have been a different tale to tell. At any rate, Cambridge hai a little more of the play after the restart, and their "virtue" had its reward snme little time later. After nuch persisten; effort, the oval came out on the Cantaiis' side, and Pringle, taking possession, was considerate enough to transfer to Soougal. That player then got on Jjhe move, and when on the^point of being tickled Che nearly lost his shirtthrough this; gave up to Walkley. Then we had a tit- bit in the shape of as fine a try as one could wish to see. It was positively startling to watch the » ay Walkley got past one or two forwards, Hughes, and, finally, the redoubtable Vlinfielu. After this the excitement was almost pain- ful, and when Mainprice made his mark about six yards from the Cardiff line there were many anxious faces around the ground. Hart- ley took the kick, and gave the leather a con- siderable amount of velocity towards the goal- posts. But who should get in the way but that hard-working forward, Brown—ever in the thick of it. You cannot lose sight of Brown, if you are following the ball at all. He is here, there, and everywhere, and his frantic efforts to score if the play is any- where near the line are positively Jaeart- breaking. Good man and true is Jack Brown. and many there are who would like to see bivo. get that coveted, but insignificant-looking, article, an international cap. The anxiety in the hearts of many of Win- field's friends was, at least, assuaged by his good form on Wednesday. Considering the heavy state of the ground, and the leaden weight of the ball, his performance should rank as one of his best. He saved well on several occasions, and kicked into touch with unerring judgment. On one occasion, in particular, several of the great Cambridge forwards were tearing dowr fill the "Express" with sketches had not my editor got some other use for his space. As it is, I will confine myself and pencil to what appealed to me as the tit-bits of the game. The outstanding feature, above all, was the terrific form displayed by the home quar- tette. It called back the days of happy memory, and afforded the 1,500 spectators, the keenest possible delight. For my own part II I am like Oliver Twist, and hope to see more of this kind of thing in thefuture. Once the ball came out cleanly on the Car- diff side of the scrum it wae whipped up, and before you could say "knife" the home third line would be seen in motion, passing and re-parsing in the most exhilarating manner, and had it not been for the grim and deter- mine dtackling of the Gant-abs the score sheet might have had a different tale to tell. As it was, not a palpable chance was missed, and all the backs brought off eome wonderful on him. when he whipped the ball from their toes with one hand and kicked finely into touch well up the arena (not with the other hand). He had a very worthy opponent in. Horsley, who also gave a good exhibition of full back play, and he cannot he blamed for either of the two tries scored against his side. I cannot quite understand why a oertaia player should wish to be nameless in play- ing in this match, when, I should say, 1,003 out of the 1,500 present knew who he was. It makes more worry for the hard-worked reporter, and. I should think, a good deal of confueion. However, the nameless one showed to great advantage in this match-a return to form which is highly welcome. He put the finishing touch to two brilliant rounds of passing in a very masterly way, and should be heard more of in future. But I hope before then he will have found a name. If he should happen to be recognised in the sketch, I trust he will not take offence or a libel action against me. To sum up, the rival teams were guilty of playing good football, and the spectators had a good "run for their money." Every one satisfied.
