THE CITY OF THE JUST.
THE CITY OF THE JUST. By THOMAS TERRELL, K.C. OF THE SOUTH WALES CEECCIT (JOINT ArrHOR OF "LADY DELMAE.™). CHAPTER XIX-Con tinued. A Grave Suspicion. "I first became acquainted with the deceased some five or six months a-go. He was a. stock- broker in London, and we were mutually interested in the Silver Streak Gold Mining Company. He came here two or three times about it, and when here he became acquainted with my daughter Winifred. Some time afterwards he asked my permission to propose to her, and I, having a very high opinion of him, gave my consent. I shortly after that became aware of the fact that Dr. Eccles had, behind my back. proposed to my daughter and persuaded her to accept him. I told. Dr. Eooles that I did not approve of his oonduot, and that I did not desire to see him again at my house. I also told him that I had promised my daughter's hand to Mr. Winstaple, and that I believed she would accept him." The rector paused. "What did Dr. Fooles say to that?" inquired the coroner. "He was very much pat out, and evidently determined to continue his addressee. I have reason to believe that Miss Stepney en- couraged him. Mr. Winstaple's visit was partly on business matters and partly with a. view to proposing to my daughter. Miss Stepeny knew that Mr. Winstaple was ooming in the evening, and she may have met Dr. Eccles and communicated, the fact to him, but that is only conjecture." "And you suggest the possibility of Dr. Booies having met the murdered man with Miss Stepney?" "I suggest nothing," replied the rector. "I wish to accuse no one; I merely tell you the facts." The room was buzzing with excitement; sus- picion fastened iteelf on Eccles. The murder was committed with his knife, and he had serious reason for desiring the broker out of the way. Dr. Eccles stepped forward and desired to give evidence, but the coroner, perhaps to give him time to consider his position, per- haps to give the police an opportunity of following up the clue, adjourned the inquiry for a week. It was not an ordinary inquest, and it was known that the county police had, requisitioned the services of Scotland Yard. A London detective was already on. the spot, and in a week the result of his labours might- be something substantial. The rector returned home hi deep thoogiht; he had seen the glance of indignation, whicb Stepiien Eocles directed towards him when he bad given his evidence, and it had dis- turbed him. I There was something after all in Eccles which made it highly improbable that he should be guilty of a deliberate murder. Mr. Stepney admitted that much to himself, but 1 then, who alMe ooutd possibly have done VtD "Who else had any motive of hatred or of profit to induce the removal of the broker? had the crime been oontmiittied in Loudon he should have been kith to come to Jiie con- clusion be had, because there might be many whoee wrongs or imagined wrongs might have prompted to a grim revenge. Winifred, paJe and reproachful, came I towamds him in the study. She had heard of the suspicion which had just got abroad, a. rumour that the rector was fanning the flame had reached her. She had become a. woman all at once, this girl of eigihiteem. Deprived suddenly of the support of Bob, she had leaned upon herself and found the prop firmer than she had erpectdd. "Father, Stephen Eccles is not guilty, I am oertoin, of it," she began directly. She had only one idea. Her lover was accused; her father beliewed the accusation. She stood to defend him, with her grea.t faith as her wea-pon. "Perhaps not," replied me rector, in a.ny- thing but his old combative tone. "Bust facts end circumstances are against him.' "Facts and circumstances!" she repeated, somewhat scornfully. "What facts or circum- stances could show that which is impossible? I Oouid he have come here and faced Bob and me if he had ibeen guilty?" "It was very bold of him. wry daring; it showed a great deaJ. of self-command, I admit." "ithen you belie-vi this wicked slander?" she demanded. "It is not for meto condemn; there will be an inquiry; justice will be done* and if rt should turn out after all that he is innocent, I should be very glad. How is Bob?" It was the only question which could have turned her wrath. She would have led off an attack; -she had prepared herself for it. iHe moment she heard of the accusation which, was implied in the rector's evidenoe, she had left the sick room and advanced to meet him, She had decided to have it out at once. She knew the innocence of Stephen Eccles. She would compel her father to see things in the same light. How was it possible tha.t a great, noble. tender-hearted man such as Stephen could be guilty of a treacherous murder? That was her one argument, and it was sufficient for her. The more he was attacked the greater was her faith, the more passionate her allegiance. That question, "Hbw is Bob? suddenly brought her round. Dr. Williams had seen her. He says she may recover; he cannot tell. She is still delirious; she remembers nothing. Oh. father, father, what will become of us?" And she threw her arms round the rector's neck. forgot what he had said, and poured forth her sorrows and her tears. The rector's head was bent; he, too, was overwhelmed. He stroked her hair with his band. "What will become of ua ? God knows, Winnie, what will become of us. We can only pray, my child, to the One Who never deserts us in the hour of trial and oi woe." For a while there was silence, and the occasional sob of the weeping girl was only interrupted by the ticking of the great clock which stood in the corner of the room —tick-tick-tick—just as it had done. slowly and steadily, when years and years ago he had brought his youthful bride home, and they had together in the springtime of youth watched its slothful movement. rejoicing that it went no faster; just as it had done when the young mother had placed her infant baby in his arms, and he had amused her by showing the heavy pendu- lum swinging back and fro; just as it had done when he had knelt, with his head in the chair, widowed and alone, and he had listened to it measuring hip grief, almost mocking with its cold monotony; just as it had done when he and Wiustapie had laughed over their port. dreaming of mil- lions; just as it did now in the midst of sorrow and disaster. He heard it, with its hea-rtlees tick-tick- tick. and it brought back to him the shadows of the past. The spirit of defiance died within him. He had had time to realise what the death | of the broker meant for him—the twenty-five | thcraroad to be paid; bo enemies victorious, J ("liD and sequestration. There was no hope t now, not the slightest scintilla.. I Then the manner in which it had all come about. Bob stricken down, hovering between life and death and lunacy, and all so suddenly. Tears came in the old man's ev-es-bitter tears. He had not been very loving to Bob of late. She had opposed him. had said hard things which had burned a mark upon his conscience; still, still, a little more gentle- ness on his part, it would have been better 80. Father, Stephen Eccles did not do it. Oh. no; he could not if he wished it; he is too good." Let us hope not. my child." His voice was so altered, so different from what it had been only a few moments before, that she started up and looked in his face. She saw the tears. Children weep April showers; old men weep blood. She clasped his cheeks in her hands and kissed him. She could not do more; it was enough. Daddy, you will not believe it of Stephen? He paused, whilst the last remnant of resistance passed away from him. No. dear, I will not—and yet, and yet, who could have done it?" Not Stephen. It is so oruel an accxtsfe* tion; so unjust, so impossible." There was no particular reason why he should be so impressed by the confidence of Winifred. But so it was. Common-sense told him that Stephen Eccles was probably guilty; a sentiment within him. which she had roused, proclaimed he was not. He remembered that the doctor's conduct for the many years he had known him was in- consistent with the crime. Then he began to think. Suppose Eccles to be innocent- quite innocent—what a charge he had made against him! For he had made it-there was no concealing that What a terrible burden of responsibility the accuser takes upon him- self! And he shrank from carrying such a load. Go. dear. Go to Bob: I want to think. I have mnch to arrange." She felt that the victory was here. There was just one thing more she wanted. Dr. Williams said -Bob required constant attention. Will .vou. send for Stephen. Daddy?" He had dismissed Eccles only two days ago, when he had made up his mind that. at any rate, there were good grounds for gus. pecting him. He would not send for Dr. Morgan. He had always been the dissenting doctor, and, besides, the case required the eminent Swansea physician. "He would not attend her." he replied, doubtfully. Yes. he will, daddy; let me send a note? The rector took up the poker in his hacd ead stirred the fire mechanically, slowly turning over the coals and making a blaze of light. No, not now. j will go and see liim my# self. It is right I should ask him; I was too hasty." His pride was like the oak it would not bend before the breeze. but when the storm got too high it broke. Dear, dear daddy." No one was more surprised than Stephen Eccles when an hour or two afterwards he was informed that Mr. Stepney was in the surgery and wished to see him. He had been prostrated by the terrible charge which had been made against him in plain terms. He had not seen the matter in that light before, The more he thought of it the more dg", gerous appeared his position. It was cleaf that the rector believed that he was the murderer; he had ae good as s&id so. Then he bethought him of the day's incidents, first commencing with the quarry accident, the operation, the interview in the cave with Bob. There was no doubt about it; he must have left the knife in the cave. He had all the others in his possession the whole time there was only that one missing, and he dis- tinctly remembered showing it to Bob. Someone must have found it. It wae ridi- culous to suppose that Bob could have struck that blow. He quite apreed with Dr. Morgan upon that point. It w:is a. thrust impelled by a powerful arm. Ben or Cae had said something about some tramp." Ben was always about, and he himself bad heard Ben use language with reference to Winstapia which showed that he bore him no good- will. And. lastly, Ben was the man who brought the distraught girl home. He had been on the scene of the crime before any- one else. Still, he did not believe it of Ben. He might be a poacher, a drunkard, a good- for-nothing," as he frequently called him- self, but he knew well enough that there was a great deal of good in Ben after all. He went down to meet the'rector. What could he possibly wish to sa.y to him? He found the clergyman standing with his hand on the back of the chair, waiting, expecting him to enter. You wish to see me, Mr. Stepney ? I have called. Dr. Eccles, as a man should do when he has made a mistake. When I went to give evidence to-day. believe me. 1 had no intention of saying what I did say. I apologise to you." "You believe me guilty of this terrible crime, and you apologise for having said so! I cannot see why you should apolo- gise." I believe I was wrong. I have had time to reflect. I ha.ve known you for years. I do not now think that you did it, but I did then. and it is for that I apologise." You do not believe that I committed this murder? JTo be continued.
