"Oh! dear me, I'forgot to give TUDOR WIL- LIAMS' BALSAM OF HONEY to my children before they retired to bed. I am certain they will COUGH ALL NIGHT WITHOUT IT. There is nothing on the face of the earth equal to it; thoroughly up-to-date." In this damp and changeable climate Coughs and Colds are almost certain at some time during the winter to visit every household in the land. Pleasant, soothing, healing, and a splendid tonic, it is certainly without an equal for the prevention and cure of troublesome coughs and in all throat and lung affections. But what vras that a step beyond? A •woman; two of them; both dead-drunk. He would put them in the ditch. They would get, up presently and go home. Ladies first. The dog howled mournfully, and stood back. "Be quiet, or indeed to goodness I'll give you a taste of the stick now," and he stooped to pick the woman up. The moon shone in her face. Dnw anwyl! Miss Bob! Dea.d He went down on his knees and" took her hand. "W ann. He felt her forehead and her heart.. Tvo, no, not dead, thank heaven, not dead. He raised her head, then put it down again. The other? He looked in his faxse. "Winstaple, the London manThe staring eyes fixed and glassy even in the moonlight. He felt him. His heart. Wnat was that in the side? A knife, buried deep, right to the very hilt. Dead! Murdered! Who hau done it? What did it all me:m? Ah! blooi! A bla-ck stream from the dead man's mouth. He turned back to Bob. He lifted her in his arms and carried her to the brook by the side of the road. He bathed her temples with the ccld water. The dog mean- while howled piteously, and would not be silenced. Bob. his good angel, what had befallen her? He trembled with fear and emotion. He was half mad. All was still save for the howl- ing of the dog; but dogs always howl at the moon, and if anyone passing in the main road heard, they took no notice. Minutes that seemed like hours went by. He held her in his arms. She breathed heavily now; but there was no sign of returning consciousness. He pressed her to his heart. What mattered it? Me would never know. What had he better do? The dead man lay there before him silent and still, with the moon now in all its splendour shining fnll upon the up- turned face. Presently a sigh from Bob made him start. She opened her eyes, at first in a dazed sort of way. She was wet; she looked up. "Ben? Ben o'r Cae?" "Yes, Miss Bob. Thank God, you're better now. What have they been doing to you?" She could not realise; there was a blank in her mind. Where was she ? What was she doing there all wet on the roadside with Ben o'r Cae? She tried to raise herself, and as she did so she saw the dead man before her. It came back all aA once. She uttered a pierc- ing shriek. "Thprc-there." she cried, raising herself on her knees and pointing wildly. Dead. I killed him. I-I-" Then again she shrieked. Ben was utterly demoralised. He did not know what to do. She clutched at his arm. "Don't leave ine—don't. Oh! I killed him! See, he is dead. Oh, those eyes, tliey burn my brain," she went on. wildly. "Take them away, Ben. take them away." She fell back again, apparently unconscious. Ben was irresolute. She, Bob, had killed thjj man. Nrdh; all ito# terrible tragedy? Was he really awaie, or was he dreaming? He looked around; he struggled to wake up if he were asleep. Xo, he was awake right enough. He must take her home. At one moment it occurred to him to hide her away. The arm of justice would pursue her; the body would be founds and then But where could he hide her? She would be discovered. Then an idea occurred to him; if she were in danger there was a. way out of it. Boo. his sweet angel, Bob, the companion of his dreams. If she had killed Winstaple. ae she herself said she had, it served him well right. Was it a delirium on her part? Had there been a third person there? Where had she got the knife from? He would have gone to have looked at the handle, but somehow or other he was frightened in. He dared not look at that face again. Bob's head rented on his knee. She breathed heavily; happily, un- oonsoious once more. Yes, if the worst came to the worst, there was a way out of it all-a way that would save Bob; and as for himself, what mattered it? He had often longed for a chance to do something great for Bob, some- thing that would have made his life worth living, and his dea.th. worth dying. And now the opportunity had come. He slung his gun on his back. took her up in his strong arms. and. carrying her like an infant, marched down the hill. The moon fell upon her face; the eyes were closed; she would never know; her long, fair hair wet, dishevelled, hung upon his arm; he stopped, paused, looked at her for a moment, then, talking off his hat, kissed her lips in a long, fond embrace. The very first and the very las" CHAPTER XVIII. Murder! The rectory was in a turmoil of excitement. Ben brought the inanimate girl in and placed her dripping and cold on the sofa. Ser- vants fainted. Winifred tbrew herself upon her sister, weeping hysterically. The rector, who had been complaining at the dinner, was in a state of frenzy, calling for someone to fetch the doctor. But when Ben said that Mr. Winstaple lay murdered upon the road, and that he bad found Bob in a dead faint on the ground close by, attention was called away from the fainted girl, and everyone was paralysed with horror. In London, murders and tragedies of all sorts are of such frequent occurrence that familiarity breeds contempt; everyone feels that the world will go on just the same to- morrow notwithstanding; but in the country, where the stream of life flows peacefully with- out disturbance, it is different: an event of this kind upsets the mental balance and is magnified in importance immediately, until everyone is paralysed with the impression that is produced. The gardener hurried off to find the local policeman, whilst Ben, more concerned about Bob than for the dead Winstaple, went in search of Dr. Eccles. Bob was undressed and put to bed, and all the remedies of hot fomentations, rubbing, and brandy, known to womankind, were applied, but without avail; she remained unconscious—the last shock had been greater even than the first. There was an uproar in the village; the even than the first. There was an uproar in the village; the news spread like wildfire, and a posse comi- tatus had been formed, headed by the one solitary constaole, who gave directions with the air and importance of a field-marshal. The body of the broker was found exactly where Ben had stated that it would be. They placed him on a stretcher, a hideous mass, with the passion and fury that had been on his countenance scarcely masked by the agony of death. They found Bob's muff and her stick, and the procession repaired to ihe village public-house, which on such occasions does duty for a morgue. people were not inclined to go to bed that night in Pen-cwm-garw. The coroner for the district was apprised by telegraph of what had occurred, and the constable, whose name wa<a Evan Evans, made his way to resi- deuce of liifi justice of tij.6_pea.-c6 to. report the event and take instructions. Mean- while Ben or Cae had been informed that Dr. Eccles had been away all day—he had not even returned for his lunch or dinner; he had said, when he was suddenly called away to the quarry accident, that he would go over the mountain to Ystrad, where be had two or three patients to visit. Ben immediately started off for another doctor, who resided about three miles off. However, fortune favoured him; he came upon Eccles on the road before he had passed the first milestone. The doctor had heard"1 nothing; he was cogitating his miseries when Ben suddenly accosted him. Ben told him what he bad seen and what, had happened; he only suppressed Bob's con- fession. Eccles at first could not believe him; the whole affair was so utterly incredible. Why, he had only said good-bye to Bob two or three hours before, and all this had happened since. Who could possibly have committed such a crime, and for what earthly purpose? The two men ran towards the village through which they had to go. Eccles deemed it advisable to call at the surgery for some instruments and remedies. Bob was pros- trated by the mental shock she had sustained* and would need instant attention. As they passed the Dynevor Arms, which was the name of the public-house where the body had been deposited, they were sur- rounded by crowds, pressing the doctor to inspect the corpse. He said he must hurry to the living; the dead could wait. He enter- tained no kindly feelings for the broker, even in death. The fate which had befallen him was scarcely more than he deserved. The rector welcomed Eccles; everything was forgotten. They entered the sick room, and the doctor immediately applied himself to restore consciousness. But a greater shock was in store for them. The spirit of life returned slowly, and presently, with a deep-drawn sigh, indicative. perhaps, of the sorrow with which she came again into the world, Bob opened her eyes. Eccles was bending over her, watching the colour come into her cheeks. She looked at. him for a while, then laughed a light. childish 3augh. and a few moments after began to sing gently one of the little ditties which she had forgotten since her infancy. He looked very grave, he said nothing; he did not want to frighten them; it might be delirium, it might be insanity. He held her hand the while; she left it in his contentedly enough. After a moment she turned un- easily; she was looking for something. Come, come, Bob. dear, lie quiet; you will be better to-morrow." She did not seem to hear; she kept looking about fretfully. He did not wish Winifred to see that which had struck terror into him. I must give her a sleeping draught, rector, she is deli- rious; she will be better to-morrow, perhaps. She has gone through a horrible experience.. providentially she does not recollect it a.trr the moment." He poured out a dose of chloral, and, afteti great difficulty, she was induced to take it. There was nothing to do now but to let. her sleep, and to see what would come of it. They were clamouring for the doctor to view the corpse. Somehow or other people never will believe a man is dead until a medical* authority has pronounced him so. They had stretched him upon a table just as they had found him. The coroner would bo there in the morning. The crowd made way for the doctor; ifr was past twelve. The house should have been shut, but the solitary constable con- sidered that under the circumstances the law might be relaxed; at any rate, until the- doctor should have come and gone. Dr. Mor. gan, who divided with Eccles the district around Pen-cwm-garw, was some 50 miles away, and had not been seen all day, and Eccles was the only available medical man. The first glance enabled Eccles to pro- nounce Mr. Winstaple as dead beyond » shadow of a doubt; indeed, death had been instantaneous, or nearly so. He turned to examine the cause, but here his astonish- ment was unbounded. The murder had been committed with one of his own amputating: knives. He could not restrain an exclama- tion; everyone crowded close. He withdrew the blade from the wound; it required some force to do so. It is the very knife with which I operated at the quarry this morn- ing," he cried; "however could sayone have obtained possession of it:" He scarcely believed his eyes. Then he began to think. From the quarry he had gone straight to the Llwchwr Cave to see Bob; then he had gone over the moun- tain. He had been to Caerphilly and Ystrad, but had had no occasion to open his case of instruments. He distinctly remembered bringing them home with him only a short. time ago; he had left them in the surgery when he had called there with Ben; and from the time when he had done the operas tion until the time he left them in the surgery they had never been out of his possession. He could not have left it in the quarry; no. h2 remembered well showing this very knife to Bob. Ali had he put it back? Ben or Cae had heard the doctor's escla- mation; he followed well enough what was passing through his mind. Coroner Benson will be holding a court in the morning." remarked Ben, so as to inter- rupt Eccles from making any further remarks. Come along, doctor, I am going your way, and if you will not object to my company," and he caught Eccles by the arm and grasped it firmly as a. means of communication. People were too excited to take much notice. Eccles under- stood that Ben had something to communi- cate. He hesitated a moment, then said to the constable; "Don't let anything be moved. I will leave the knife here. I think you had better see if Dr. Morgan can be got in the morning; the coroner will, doubtless, direct a post mortem. You had better lock the door and stay here to-night. You have, of course, telegraphed to the inspector; I think I should get the house closed as soon as you can." He then left with Ben o'r Cae, and they walked along the road together towards the surgery; meanwhile, the man in authority adopted the advice which he had received, and soon, the village was slumbering in silence. "Come in. Ben." remarked Eccles; "a drop of Scotch after to-day s events won't hurt. you." "No, doctor. I'm a total just now. Ben always became a 1eetotaler when anything serious was on hand; he knew the danger of a w-agging tongue. Then, when they were seated: "How is she?" and he made a sign in the direction of the rectory. "Bad, very bad. I fear her reason has given way." ( "Ah!" ejaculated Ben, "do she talk about it?" "No, she remembers nothing at present she sleeps. I can't say how it will be in the morn- ing." And as he spoke the doctor helped himself to a drop of whisky; he felt he needed a fillip. He renewed his offer to the poacher, but it was firmly declined. "Doctor." commenced Ben, doubtful as to how he should put what he had to say. lhat knife, where did you see it last?"
