A STABLE -MYSTERY..
A STABLE MYSTERY. By NAT GOULD. Author of The Double Event," Settling Day," In Royal Colours," Ac., Ac. CHAPTER m. DETECTIVE DETHICK. The detective stood looking out of the window as Catteran Cresley entered the room, and the owner of Blue Blood caught sight of a tall, athletic man's back before he turned round and faced him. 'I am Leslie Dethick," said the new arrival. "and have been sent down from Scotland Yard to investigate a case of horse poisoning. You are Mr. Catteran Cresley, I prerumee" "I am," said Catteran. "Take a chair, and we will talk the matter over." He liked the look of Leslie Dethick. The detective was a. more powerful man than he apppared to be, Catteran thought. He Was between thirty and forty years of age, with keen, penetrating dark eyes, and his somewhat dark complexion gave him a rather foreign appearance. He might easily have been mistaken for a good-looking, light- hearted Neapolitan. Not one man in a hundred would have guessed his occupation, much less have suspected him of being one of the smartest men in the Yard. He had been engaged in many complicated cases, and bad never yet failed. His skill and integrity were undoubted. A kind-hearted man by nature, he was stern and inexorable when hunting down a criminal, and he never gave any quarter to the men he tracked with the perti- nacity of a bloodhound. For some moments there was silence between them. They were taking stock of eath other. When Leslie Dethick received his instruc- tions it did not take him long to scan the papers, run round to several sporting acquain- tances, and find out how the scratching of Blue Blood would be received, for at that time the horse was not struck out. He soon learned that there had been a good deal of opposition to the favourite for the Cesarewitch, and the evening papers, in their later editions on the Monday, had learned the news that Blue Blood was scratched, and made sundry comments. Whatever suspicions he might have enter- tained were banished when he had thoroughly summed up Catteran Cresley. He saw, with his well-trained, unerring judgment of men, that Mr. Cresley was a gentleman and a man of honour. "I shall believe every word he speaks," was the detective's inward comment. At his request Catteran gave a full account of all that had taken place. "Can I see Tom Burton?" said Leslie Dethick. "Certainly; I will send for him." said Cat- teran, ringing the bell and giving his orders when the servant appeared. "You have never had cause to mistrust this man, Burton?" "No; he is a peculiar fellow, sullen at times, but. so far as we know, honest and up to his work. My trainer, Ben Fitchett, has a high opinion of him." "Of course, you trainer is above suspicion?" "Oh, yes; and he was away when it hap- pened, as I have already told you." The detective smiled. He knew if Fitchett was mixed up in the affair his absence from the stables might have been part of the plan. I "Fitchett is here if you would like to see him," said Catteran. "Thank you, I will see him." i Ben Fitchett also favourably impressed the detective, but he did not always rely upon appearances. Tom Burton had gone home in an angry frame of mind. He fancied Mr. Cresley sus- peoted him. and he was, despite his disposi- tion, very sensitive. His wife tried to cheer him, and said she was sure Mr. Cresley was far too just to harbour any suspicions against such a good servant. When the message came for him to go to the house he said to his wife: "More cross-questioning, I suppose. I'll not stand much of it." "Be careful what you say. and mind and be I respectful," she said. "Mr. Cresley is a good master, and we know it." "Then why does he suspect me?" "I am sure he has mo suspicion against you, but he natwrallywishes to find the culprit. Don't let your manner tell against you," said his wife. Tom Burton went off muttering, and his wife felt uneasy, not that she doubted him, but she knew his sullen manner and stubborn temper might create an unfavourable impres- sion. When Leslie Dethick saw Tom Burton he thought: "He's a deep customer, but he looks honest." He cross-examined Burton until the head lad had some difficulty in keeping his temper. "You were the last person to see the horse, and you say he was all right when you left him." "Yes," replied Burton, gruffly. "What time was it when you left the stables?" f "Going on for eight." "Was there anyone about?" "Yes, the people were coming out of church." "Did anyone speak to you?" "Dr. Shortose bid me good-night, and asked if the favourite was all right." "And you replied?" "Yes; I have just done him up for the night." "Did the doctor make any reply?" "He only said good-night, and walked on." "Have you any suspicion who got at the horse?" "No, none in the least. I cannot account for it. but it must have been someone who knew the stables well, for only the small side gate was unlocked, and it has a patent catch." Tom Burton was dismissed, but ordered to wait. "Well?" said Catteran. questioningly. "Do you doubt Tom Burton?" asked the detective. Catteran did not answer immediately, and Leslie Dethick said: "I see you do, but I think you are wrong. He had no part in it, but he is the sort of man who would shield-a friend if he acciden- tally discovered he had a hand in it." "That would be criminal complicity," said Catteran. "Call it what you like. He would not think it so. if I judge him rightly. Is he greatly indebted to anyone about here?" "Not that I know of; that is, no one in.par- ticular. I believe Dr. Shortose pulled him through a dangerous illness some years ago. The doctor practised at Newmarket at one time." "Dr. Shortose is a friend of yours and owns Long Tom, who is now favourite, does he not?" I "Yes," replied Catteran. "We had a friendly wager of two thousand aside about our horses, Blue Blood against Long Tom, one to win. So I shall lose that." Leslie Dethick became interested. "Your friend, I presume, is well off, as he does not I practise now?" he asked. "I should Bay so; probably as well off as I 1oID. or nearly ao," replied Catteraai. j "U you have nonobjection I will look round the stables with your trainer, and examiBfr the side gate with the patent catch." "Fitchett will show you everything, and I hope you will lay hands on the scoundrel on scoundrels before long." said Mr. Cresley. "I will do my beet. I have never failed Yell- in a case I took in hand. I am interested ita. this stable mystery, and it will take soma- solving, but I may find a clue before lon* replied Leslie Dethick. He accompanied Ben Fitchett to the stables, and made a careful examination of Blue Blood's box, but there was nothing there to put him on the scent. The side gate he found had a peculiar spring fastening, and no one who did not know how it worked would be able to open it. He tried himself. without success, until Ben Fitchett explained how it acted. From this it appeared that someone about the place, or who had a knowledge of how the gate opened, must have been concerned in the nobbling of the favourite. He spent most of the afternoon there, and on returning to the house said he would go down to Newmarket for the races, as be might possibly find a clue there. Catteran Cresley thought this unlikely, but knew it would be better to let him work in his own way. "I shall no doubt see you there," he said. Leslie Dethick was fairly puzzled at this case. He did not know whom to fix his sus- picions on. Strange as it would have appeared to Mr. Cresley. he did not suspect Tom Burton of having a hand in it, but be had an idea the head lad was concealing something, and knew more than he would tell. Ben Fitchett was an old and trusted servant, and there seemed no reason to doubt him. Still, one never could tell, and the detective knew from experience that some men are esteemed most honourable until they have been proved rogues. Ben Fit- chett had been in London on the Saturday and returned by the midnight train. H the trainer desired, he could have entered Blue Blood's box and no one been the wiser. Mr. Cresley had stated the trainer had gone up to town on some private business of his own, which his master did not inquire into. Detective Dethick meant to trace Ben Fit- chett's movements, if possible, and he did not think it would be a difficult matter. On arriving in town he went to a well-knowa sporting rendezvous and there met Abel Gent, a well-known layer of odds. "You know Mr. Cresley's trainer by sight, I suppose?" he asked Gent. "Did you see him on Saturday? He was in town." "I met him here; in fact. I had a wager with him. He backed Blue Blood, took seven "ponies" about him. Ben does not bet heavily," replied Gent. "Did he say anything about the horse?" "He said he had a good chance, but the price was short, and in such a field it might be an open race. I asked him if he fancied rAmS Tom. Dr. Shortose's horse, and he said he" would run well, but that Blue Blood held him safe." "Was anyone-with him?" "Yes, some man I did not know; but I ta. seen him on the ra-cecourees." "I suppose you know why Blue Blood was scratched. Mr. Cresley has written to the press explaining it. and it will soon be public property," said Dethick. "I don't know that. but I do know that some of our fellows have been laying Blue Blood considerably over their books; they must have been 'in the know.' "The horse was poisoned, got at, on Satur- day night." Abel Gent smiled incredulously. "Who has stuffed you with that story? X don't believe it." "You will when you read "The Turf Daily" to-morrow," was the reply. Catteran Cresley's letter to the press vme hot and strong, and he indignantly denied all the reports that bad been circulated. "My horse has been foully poisoned, and if members of the ring have been overlaying him they must have had something to go upon. I shall leave no stone unturned to discover the miscreant and his acoom. plices, if any, which is probable. Blue Blood is under the care of Mr. Gerard Towle, whose certificate I enclose, and is not out of danger. I shall run Pancake for the Cesa.rewitch, but I think the forlorn odds on offer represent his chance." This letter stemmed the tide of public opinion against the owner of Blue Blood, and the press expressed sympathy with him. (To be Continued.)
AN AMERICAN INVENTION
AN AMERICAN INVENTION "I've got a new machine, exolaimed at Yankee pedlar, "for picking bones out of fishes. Now, I tell you, it's the best thing yoa., ever did see. All you have to do is to set it on the table and turn a crank, and the fisbi flies right down your throat, and the bones right under the grate. "Well, there was a country 'greenhorn' got hold of it the other day, and be turned the cranK the wrong way; and, I tell you, the way the bones flew down his throat was awful; why, it stuck that feller so full of bones that he couldn't get his shirt off for a whole week."
WHAT KILLED THE BEAR
WHAT KILLED THE BEAR An Englishman and a Yankee were one dsy "swapping yarns" in a New York hotel. The Englishman related how on one occasion he was travelling in the Black Hills without fire- arms, when he saw a mountain lion coming towards him. The lion sprang at him, bat, quickly dodging it, he caught it by the jaw&. and held its mouth open till it starved to death. The Yankee, not to be outdone, told how he once met a grizzly bear, and as the bear advanced be raised his rifle to shoot It. but suddenly remembered he had no bullets. The sweat poured down his face, and, as it was freezing keen at the time, the sweat formed into little ice balls. Seizing several of these, he stuffed them into his rifle, and fired. The charge entered the bear's head. melted, and the bear died of water on the brain.

"I beg your pardon," he replied from the bank, "but I want it distinctly understood that I'm a married man with seven children." "Yes, yes; save me!" she shrieked. "Then there 11 be no falling into my arms and calling me preserver, will there?" "Oh. no, no!" "And you won t insist on marrying me foe my heroic conduct?" "No, no; only save me!" "All right, I'll tackle the job," he responded, as he threw aside hie coat. "Yoa see." he explained, just before diving in. "I was caught by one o' these dodges once before, and that's how I come to be married. It makes me a bit particular."
