[ALL RIGHTS EESERVEDR THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE. By FERGUS HUME, Author of The Mystery of a Hansom Cab." The Bishop's Secret," At. CHAPTER XX.—(Continued). "By Jove!" said Nash, as his wife opened the window, "I've got the little devil fast. Come in here, you brute. Ah! would you?" for Hafiz was trying to set his teeth into the hand that held him. "Whatever's the matter?" asked Mrs. Nash. "This," replied the big man, shaking the creature much as a terrier might shake a rat. "I waa waiting outside on the road for you, and I saw this creeping along. He's been staring into the window for five minutes. I came behind him and gave him a clip over the ear. You'll accuse me of murder, will you, you infernal nigger!" "Let me go. Let me go," pleaded Hafiz whimpering. "I thought you did. I saw you go away." "Pshaw! Don't lie. Tyson, this is your business now!" and Nash handed over the terrified Hindoo to Jack. "This is the second time you have come to my house for some vile purpose, Hafiz," said Jack sternly, while the man crouched. "What is it now?" But Hafiz took no notice. He was staring at the box of diamonds over which Solomon was gloat-ing, quite oblivious to what was taking place. "I came for those," he said, pointing one lean finger, I knew that you," he scowled at Rebekah, "had them. But you lied." » "I received you, certainly." replied Mrs. Nash coolly and cheerfully, "but I was not going to give up other people's property to a scoundrel like you. You have been following me then." "Ever since," muttered Hafiz, still staring at the jewels. I knew you had them, and I determined to t-a.kft them to myself." "Xo," said Jack, "they belong to my wife." "And partly to my husband," put in Mrs. Jury. "In any case you shall not have them," said Nash. "Follow my wife about, will you? Eh! I'll give you a, hiding." "And he killed my father," said Eebekah. "Go for the police, Joe." "I did not kill anyone," said Hafiz turning grey; "if you mean the Jew, it was the Count wbo-" "Yes. Yes. We know all about that. But the Count was only an accessory before the fact, Hafiz. He is dead, and you shall be hanged." "I want the diamonds," said Hafiz, echoing the cry of the other man, "give me my pro- I They were fighting, and Hails had his teeth in Solomon's neck. perty!" and he stretched out one leaji claw. Solomon saw the hand extended over the box. and seized it with so hard a grasp that Hafiz ofried out. Then he was on his feet, shaking him. "Ah! you devil!" shouted Solo- mon. "You betrayed me. I told you abomjt these, and you told Ivan. I was left to die in Siberia while you came here to take what the priest left to me. Mine. Mine. Mine," and he spread out his hands over the jewels. At the sound of that raised voice, Naeh started and peered into the excited face of Solomon. "That is the man who murdered the Count," he cried, pointing an accusing finger. "I recognise his voice, and his face also. He wore just such an expression." "No. It is not true," said Mrs. Jury, and threw herself before Solomon as though to protect him. "It is, true," insisted Nash, "I know he killed the Count. The police! I should think it was about time I did get the police. Here are two murderers, Hafiz. and this man. Now-" he stretched out his hand. "Off! Off!" shrieked Solomon, backing. "I am not afraid. I did kill Ivan; yes, I did. He left me to rot in Siberia. I saw him in the train as we went back to town. I ran away from my wife and got into the same train as Ivan. When he went out after see- ing this place I followed him. I killed him— I I strangled him. and he deserved to die. Now I shall have the diamonds and be-" He finished the sentence with a yell of dis- may. All the others were too much surprised to say a word or to make a movement. While I their attention had been fixed on Solomon, Hafiz 'had stealthily taken up the box of jewels. With a rush he flung himself past Nash and out of the open window. The next moment he had leaped the fence and was running for dear life with his plunder. It was then that Solomon yelled. He saw his wealth disappear, and like a thunderbolt he charged through the company. He also leaped out of the window, and was tearing after the Hindoo, shouting wildly all the time. They were making towards the sandhills. "Quick. Quick! Let us catch both." cried Jack to Nash, "Hafiz is going to Mrs. Par- sons." and the two men ran out. In a few moments they were steadily running after the flying sonple. Left behind, Lil was kneeling by Mrs. Jury, who waslying in a dead faint on the floor. Rebekah, paying n9 attention to the condition of her au-nt. was out in the rain waving her hand and crying out to encourage the two men in the pursuit. It was pouring with rain, and the pursuers were drenched long before they got to the outskirts of the town. Jack being the lighter man soon was ahead of Naoh, and he new pOowrrlfbt io th* United Ita- of AiMriefc far Q. T. PitreaJ past astonished people, who stared open- mouthed at his furious speed and at tÀ. speed of the two men rushing ahead some distance. Hafiz wax first. At a distance followed Solomon, His white face set like a. mask. Some way behind ran Jack, while Nash brought up the rear, settling himself down to a dogged, slinging trot, of the kind that wears out the swiftest runner. Shortly people appeared like magic from everywhere The word was passed round that a thief was oeing chased, and, although no one had any idea of the rights or wrongs of the case, 9t dozen or so zealous spirits joined in the man- Illmt. Hafiz was the fox and those who followed him the hounds. At first it had been the Hindoo's intention to dodge Solomon and make for Mrs. Parsons, He knew that the old woman would be abla to conceal him in some hole. until Solomon could be caught. But the fierce Jew was so close at his heels, that to go home would only be to run into a trap. In desperation IJafiz, with no very clear idea of what he was going to do, made for the sand-hills. Ha thought that perhaps he might outrun his pursuers. But as the hue and cry swelled in the air, he knew that half Chesleigh. was after him. Worst of all, a backward glance showed him the savage face of his foe. There wa« death at his heels. But for all that Ilafis would not give in, would not surrender the precious box of jewels, for which he had risked so much. With the courage of des- pair he sprang up the ascent and disappeared behind the hummocks of sand. Jack gave a shout when he saw Solomon dart after the Hindoo and also disappear. His cry was echoed by the crowd behind. Every- one knew that the two men were making for the beech, and everywhere lay the traps of the quicksands. Many people stopped, afraid to venture further; but Jack still ran on, and after him Nash, with a few followers. Tyson got his second wind, and ran up rapidly. When he got to the top of the rise. he was met by the full force of the gale which roared inland from ithe German Ocean. With it came the drenching rrin, whipping his hot face. Lines of white waves frothed on the grey beach, and oversea the clouds were rac- ing before the storm. In this devil-dance of the elements, Jack, could not hear his own. voice. All the same he shoi*«d back to Na.sh to beware of the quicksands. and then hurled himself down the slope against the wind. Befote him at a less distance ran two grey figures. The Hindoo was running like a. drunken man. swaying to this side and to that. But the Jew ran steadily, his elbows at his sides, and his fierce eyes fixed on the man who had stolen his wealth. Not knowing where he was going. but fully realising the perils of the place, Hafiz staggered forwards towards the wa.ves as though to pitch him- self in. On the verge of the water he swerved to the right, and so gave Solomon an advan- ta.ge. which the Jew wae not slow to take. By a side-way he approached Hafiz, drawing, nearer and nearer every moment. The Hin- doo. seeing his danger, began to screech. He knew that he wotiJd have no quarter unless, he gave up his loot, and be determined rather to die than to do that. After a time Solo- nratt came within arms' length. Hafiz spat* on him, and cried aloud: "If I dip you die, and the jewels will 801 with us below!" So saying he turned and ran straight a.t. the Jew. who, taken by eurprise. lost his. balance. Hafiz sprang past him and made inland towards a place where he knew therel was a quicksand. Not knowing the danger, Solomon was up and after his prey in a. moment. Jack on the level, and Nash with others on the hills, saw the two men meet and roll over. Then Hafiz rose by himself. the box in one hand, a knife in the other. At his feet. Solomon, bathed in blood, roared like a bull and njade futile clutches ati the spoil. "No. No," cried Hafiz, and they ooald hear1 his shrill note of triumph. "I take it with me-you too, you too." He flung the box far across the shininc sand. At this moment the sun darted a ray from behind a cloud, and the whole surface, of the quivering sand glistened like gold. Solomon gave a cry when he saw the jewels hurling through the air Th*i box opened. and a rain of many oolonred gems flashed in the momentary sunlight. Hafiz clapped hi«u hands, as the gems fell into the insatiabl^ sand. The Jew rose with an effort—he was eTi" dent lv wounded to the dieath—and. stagger- ing forward, seized the man round the waist. Hafiz gave a cry and began to struggle. But it was too late; already they were being sucked down. Tyson, on the verge of tibis hideous grave, could do nothing. He wai afraid to move lest he might meet with a: like fate. And the watchers on the sand- hills uttered a cry of dismay as the two straggling figures slowly disappeared. They were still fighting and Hnfiz had! his teeth in Solomon's neck. The sunlight died away, aad a. grey haze seemed to overspread the scene as though to hide that terrible death. It gradually thickened as fresh mists drove in from the sea. The watchers heard a. shrill cry, a loud bellow, and then there was silence. (To be concluded to-morrow).
