THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE
[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED]' THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE By FERGUS HUME, Author of "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab." "The Bishop's Secret," &e. CHAPTER XVII.—(Continued.) "Another word of insolence and I call my servant!" said Miss Salt. "Hafiz bit his fingers. "Oh! you are clever. but I also am clever. I know you murdered that Jew, Marthae." "Oh, I did, did I! And how do you know?" Rebekah bent forward eagerly. "The Count told me." "That's a lie." "It is the truth. See, I know. I have your life here," Hafiz stretched out a skinny hand, opening and shutting the fingers. "Nicholas told me." "How could Nicholas tell you what he does not know? Besides, Nicholas was too devoted to the Count to betray him. And it was Count Ivan that killed Marthas to obtain the Jade Eye." "Ah! Yon know of the Eye?" "I know the whole story, and all about the diamonds also. But I have not got them. Come now, what did Nicholas tell you?" "I made him drink," said Hafiz, beginning to feel that he was getting the worse of the conversation. "Nicholas is honeet and true. Oh, yes. But when he drinks what the English ca.11 whisky he knows not how to keep his tongue quiet. I knew that Marthaa had the Jade Eye, but he would not sell it to me. He wanted too much money. The Count could not pay either. He told me eo, and it was Ivan who went to murder him. You went I also!" Bebekah started. "How do you know that?" she demanded, growing very white. "Nicholas heard you talking to the Count on the day you made him smoke opium. It was then yon took from him the Jade Eye, and went down to get the diamonds at Ches- leigh. And you have them now." "I have not. How can you prove that I got the Jade Eye from the Count?" "I cannot prove that. But if you wanted nothing why did you make him take the black smoke? I only think." "Tha.t can do no good," said Miss Salt con- temptuously. "Wait. I do not tell you all. I can say you killed Marthas. You were at the shop on that night." Bebekah thought for e. moment. "I admit that I was," she said coolly. "I went to see 1- "It is a lie. Nash did not kill the ConnU" Martha* about some business. WbaIt. it Wa8 on you need not be told. I got there some few minutes after eleven, and I saw the Count come away from the shop. He killed the Jew." "No, no! You did. you did!" Hafiz spoke vehemently. "I can prove otherwise. I am not afraid of you. If I had the diamonds I would not give them to you." Bebekah snapped her fingers. "You can't make me afraid, you miserable little man." "The Count told me that he saw you kill Marthas." "Then the Count told a lie. I saw him; but be crid not see me. I ran into the shop and. saw the body. Then I came away. Ivan asked me to say that he was in this house on the night of the murder. He said that he might be suspected, as it wets known that he was trading with the Jew over the Jade Eye. He swore that he was innocent." "Ho!" said the man derisively, "and you talked to him near the scene of the death thus p" No," replied Rebekah, quietly, this con- versation took place a few days later, when he came to me to prove the alibi. I consented to do so, and afterwards became engaged to him for my own sake-that is, for business— which has nothing to do with you, Hafiz. I know all about you, little villain that you are! Ivan told me. You got the information about the idol and the Jade Eye from a man called Koachei-Vassia Koschei. He was your fellow-prisoner in Siberia. You all three tried to escape, and you and the Count got away, and left Vassia behind. But he escaped later, and is now in London." "I know," replied Hafiz quietly, although he was secretly astonished at the extent of her information; "he is the husband of the woman who lived in Chesleigh. I thought she had the diamonds, as she was always I about the museum. I followed her often, but now I know that she has them not. You have them—oh, yes. And, you give them to me!" he cried ferociously. "Hold your tongue!" retorted the un- dannted Rebekah. "You can't frighten me. I can prove my innnocence of the murder of the Jew." Yes. But that man you love. Oh. no, gracious lady, not the dead Count, but the big red man. Can you prove his innocence?" What do you meanP" oried Rebekah sharply, and turne-i paJe. I mean that he killed the Count. Oh. yes, be knew that you were engaged to the Count -I speak quite English, you see, lady—and he hatad the Count, He came to Chesleigh to kill him. He followed him. I heard the pOawrlgfcfc <a taw United- States of America by D. T. PiMMj Count cry when the big man attacked him. Then J came. and thi big rtd man ran away. I got the Jade Eye from tho dead—oh, yet. and I used it with Mr. Tyson. to get the diamonds. But they are gone. And you got them, gracious lady, when you were in the museum. But the big red man killed Ivan, and I tell that he did, if you give me uot what I want!" He stretched out his bamd-^is a grasping manner. Bebekah snatched the revolver from under the newspaper. Out you go," she said rising. "I won't hear vnothcr word. It it 81 lie. Nash did not kill the Count. I know he di..l not." "And I know he did," insisted the-mnn. rising also and backing towards the door, and I tell." You do," said Miss Salt, defiantly, and you will be hanged fcr the murder of Ma-thas" J did not kill him. I was at Ghseleigh. Mr. Tyson saw mc," I don't know what Mr. Tyson saw or what he says. But after the d-i'ath of the Count Nicholas brought me a paper signed and wit- nessed. It said that you and the Count went to see Marthas. You strangled him, and took the Jade Eye from the body. Then the Count—since there was no honour among thieves—struck you from behind, and when you were seneelefs went away with the Jade Eye. I Hiet him then, but he did not see me. I only knew the whole truth after his death. He lt--ft the paper for me, because he thought that I believed he had struck the blow" "It is a lie!" eaid Hafiz, backing against the door. He was red in the face, his eyes were starting out of Ids head. and he showed hh teeth in the most unpleasant manner. "It is the truth, and I am going to tell Mr. Tyson all about it. As to your accusing my -I mean Mr. Naeh-of this second crime, you dare to do so, and I place the confession of the Count in the hands of the police." "The diamonds!" gasped the shaking wretch., "They are where you will not get them. Ha," as she spoke there came a. ring at the door, "there is Mr. Nash. Now, will you wait and hear me repeat my accusation in his pre- sence?" For answer Hafiz threw up hie hands witht a curse, and fled from the room, as thought the police were after him in reality. He ran down the stairs, and nearly upset Nash. what was entering at the moment. Before the big man could recover himself sufficiently to swear, Hafiz was round the corner and out of, sight. In the drawing-room Bebekah threw down, the revolver which had served her so well„ and pressed her hands to her forehead. She, was deadly pale. and when Nash entered he started back with an exclamation of astoonigh- ment at the sight. "What the deuce," he used a stronger word., "is going on here? At the door a nigger dashed past me, and now I find you as white as chalk. Is anything the matter?" "God knows," said Rebekah, looking steadily* at her husband. He gazed at her tenderly. He was truly de- voted to his wife, although his selfish desire for his father's money had prevented him from acknowledging her. And yet, after all. was his act so very selfish 11 He knew well that if cut off with a shilling he could never hope to have his wife to live with him. Rebekah was fond of beautifial things, and if he could not supply her with them she would continue to dance, so as to be able to earn her own money. And it was wormwood to the jealous man to hear his wife spoken of as a dancer. Equally had he hated that picture of Jack's. Its appearance on the walls of tha academy seemed to be an insult. As he looked at her, Rebekah suddenly broke down. She had undergone a great strain since the murder of the Jew, and now she felt that she wanted someone to lean upon. Who so fit as her husband ? He looked big and strong as he stood there yearning to take her to his arms. And she knew that in spite of his roughness he loved her very dearly. Then she shivered. Had he loved her so much as to murder the Count in a fit of jealous rage? She threw herself into his arms. (To be continued).
ON BOTH SIDES.
ON BOTH SIDES. A gentleman had a coloured servant who could not be taught to serve things at the left hand of guests at the table. At length the gentleman hit upon an ingenious expedient. Coats were then worn single-breasted, and he told Gsesar that he must always hand the plates "Mid other dishes to the gouts on the buttonhole aide. This plan worked admirably for some time; but one day there came s foreign guest who wore a double-breasted eos/t. Poor Caesar, in dismay, looked first at me side of it and then at the other, aittl finally, east- ing a. look of despair at his master, he ear- elaim^d, "Buttons an bofe sides, msssnsjbA handed the plate right oni the genUemoAt head.
