I [ALL RIG HTS NESER-VEDIt I THE MYSTERY OF THE JADE EYE, By FERGUS HUME, Author of "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," "The Bishop's Secret," <te. SYNOPSIS OF PREVIOUS INSTALMENTS. Jack Tyson, a young artist, reads an adver. tisement offering a reward for the recovery of "the Jade Eye." His model, fiebekah Salt, thinks she knows something about it. Tyson calls on Count Ivan, who has offered the reward, and says he does not know of the eye itself, but is aware of the where- ahnnts of an image to which it belongs.) This is an Indian idol in a museum at Cbesleigh. in Essex. The collection in this | museum was left to the town by Priscus Glynn. Tyson's uncle. It transpires that Ivan and a Persian named Hafiz are in a dead heat for tbe :m??e. whilst the Jew, Marthas (whose adopted daughter, Lil Brach. is engaged to Jack), is mixed up in the affair. The pupil of the "Eye" is really a valuable diamond. Jack and Rebekah go down to te Ohesleigh and meet Mrs. Jury, the late Priscus Glynn's housekeeper and legatee, in the museum. Whilst the lady and Jack talk Rebekah disappears, but she starts for London in the same carriage which takes Mrs Jury there. Jack is surprised to find Lil Bra-ch at Mrs. Jury's cottage, and he sees Hafiz at the museum! The next morning news comes to his hotel from Lil that her adopted father has been strangled. Jack and Lil go up to Town and attend the in- quest. Marthas' will reveals that he had a daughter Rachel, who left him: also a sister who turns out 10 be Mrs. Jury and produces a certificate of the daughter's death, and takes possession of the property. She tells Jack that her husband, a llHil1 called Solo- mon, has returned fr 'm the United States, and that they are goinc abroad. She gives the cottage at Chesleigh to Jack, who visits Count Ivan. The Count, informs him that he has become engaged to Miss Salt. CHAPTER IX.-Continue d. "In the States." said Jack astonished. He began to think that the man was out of his senses. "Yes r Yes!" put in Mrs. Jury hastily. "Poverty and business worries, but he is all right now with me. We are rich, and ho will have everything the world can give him." ''DO TOU KNOW WHO KILLED YOUR BROTHETI 0" "Except-" began Solomon, and then shopped with a vacant look. Mrs. Jury had laid her hand on his arm. He glanced at her and she shook her head. He bowed meekly and went to a distant chair, where he eati down. The woman looked after him with a pitiful expression. "I have got him back, but in what a state." she said. "Oh! he was a handsome and clever man once." Her brow grew dark. anil ehe raised her hand in denunciation. "Cursed be those who brought him so low!" "Wliat do you mean?" asked Jack who could not understand this strange .scene. There was something behind it all. but Mrs. Jury i recovering her composure shewed plainly that she did not intend he should know what was the matter. "Never mind," she said in a peremptory tone, my liusand has had so .much trouble that his brain has been upset. More than this you need not know. We leave this place to- day, and it is unlikely we shall ever return. All I came to see is that you and Lil are satisfied." "I am more than satisfied." rejoined Jack promptly, "but Lil he hesitated. Mr. Jury looked surprised. "Surely ehe is pleased that you have the cottage and a sum of money. She will now be able to marry you." "Yes. She has consented to do so whenever I like," .said Tyson perplezed, "but I don't un- derstand her. I told her of your kindness. and she burst into tears. At first she said that I should take nothing from you. then she went on saying I must not mind her. I could not find out, what she meant. But there is not absolute confidence between Lil and myself," added Jack with a. sigh. "She is keeping something from you?" Jack looked straightly at the woman. "I believe J,il knows who killed Mr. Marthas," he said in it whisper, "she hints as much, but I cannot get the truth out of her." 'Hie fa('e of Mrs. Jury grew white, but she tried to pass off her emotion with a careless laugh." "Oh. she talks nonsense." she said; "how can she know who killed my brother, seeing that she was in this very place on the night the crime was committed! She is foolish." "All the same she knows something," per- sisted Jack. "I must see her." said Mrs. Jury; "she is still with Jonae at Clapham? IttlJought so. Well, I'll call and see her. I want her to marry you and settle here happily. She must forge;t all about this tragedy." The woman spoke with great composure, and with considerable firmness. Yet Jack guessed that she was not as easy in her mind as she tried to make out. After a fsause she looked at the artist. "Have you seen anything more of that Persian?" she demanded. "No. Since that night 1 saw him haunting the museum, he has not bpen eeen in Ohes- leigh. "Verjr pood. If he does conre here, Jack,, keep away from him. He is a dangerous man. and crazy about the Jade Eye. What he: means to do with it when he getrt it I do not know. It seems that it was in the possession of my unhappy brother; but whether or not he was murdered by someone anxious to get it I cannot say. All I do know is that you haff better keep both Hafiz and; Count Ivan ouit of your life. I have put you into a good position Jack, in which you can do good work. Mind your own business, and leave these shady things alone." "But what do you know about the Jade Eye?" "I know many things which I learned from a letter my brother left behind him. It ia no use your knowing them. All I advise you is to keep to yourself. I'll see Lil and sive her the same advice. Now good-bye; you won't, see me again. But I've made you happy." "You have indeed." said Tyson, grasping her hand; "but I do not understand what Y(}Q mean. There is some mystery—" "There is. and you had better not inquire what it is." "Do you know who killed your brother?" "I do not. If I did the assassin should hang. But enough of this," said Mrs. Jury taking her husband by the arm. "Come, Solomon, we must go away." "I am going." murmured Yassia, as .she led him to the door: "together we must look for the Jade Eye. Ruth." He would have said more. but with a quick jerk she hurried him through the door, and was out of the gata before Jack could recover from his astonish- ment. Tyson went to the gttte and saw them pass down the road. It was now six o'clock, and a. beautiful evening. Mrs. Jury was apparently talking earnestly to her companion, and he was making use of the most vehement gee- ttures. It was plain that Mrs. Jury knew much more tftan she chose to say, and certain that Yassia, Solomon, the Russian Jew, had some acquaintance with the Jade Eye which WM the cause of the trouble. Ja-ck reflected that ever since the appearance of the advertisement. in the newspaper, ke had been involved in mysteries connected with this queer object. Rebekah, Mrs. Jury, Yaseia. Solomon, and Count Ivan. All of them were mixed up in some conspiracy, and it would seem from the hints let drop that Hafiz was at the bottom of the whole thing. However, since Jack had benefited to the extent of a cottage and a ram of money, he was not the man to complain. All the same he wondered what would next happen in connec-tion with the affair. The Jade Eye had indirectly led to the death of Marthas, and it was probable that before the mystery was finally cleared up—if it ever wa. at ill-tbere would be another victim. In thia vague way Jack argued. But he really knew so little, and surmised so wildly, that he became aware he was thinking nonsense. Why- should there be another victim? "It's all rubbish," said Tyson, as be returned to his new home. "1 must put the thing out of my head. However Marthas loet his life; in whatever villainy Ivan and the Persian are concerned; and whatever con- nection Mrs. Jury and Rebekah have with the matter, the thing itself does not concern me. I have a bright future, and Lil will soon be my wife. There is no more to be said." This was all very well, but Jack remem- bered that, under the will he was responsible for the safety of the idol Janshee. He had no expectation that his cousin would ever appear. She had been lost for over twenty years, and it was unlikely that the would come forward 1 ) claim her legacy. Besides, if she did. what; earthly use would it be to her? Yet Jack determined that very evening to itake the idol from the museum, and put it in his cot- tage. There at least it would be impossible lor the murderer of Marthas to replace the Jade Eye, for the possession of which he had jeopardised his life. "If I could only find out what the motive of this business is!" Jack murmured; but think as he might, no solu- tion commended itself to him. However, his mind being made np, he went to the hotel and engaged a porter with a. hand- barrow to transport tke image to the cottage. From the landlord, Daly, he learned that Mrs. Jury and her husband had gone up to town by the seven train. "And very glad I was to gf" 'em go," said Daly, "for you see. Mr. Tyson. I don't think that man's right in his head." "He has been unfortunate. I believe," said -T.ick evasively. It was none of his business to exhibit the skeleton of Mrs. Jpry's cupboard to a stranger. "I think Mrs. Jury is the more unfortunale of the two," replied Daly shrewdly, "to ha.ve a- hu.sba.nd like that. I thought Jury-was dead, and buried." (To be continued).
