OUR SHORT STORY. THE GREAT BLACK DIAMOND. I was m Cairo when I first heard the story of the Great Black Diamond, which was told me by a swarthy, chubby fakir who strode into my presence on a wooden stump as I sat in my doorway looking out over the Nile at sunset. I was an attentive listener. He rtkbbed his fat. greasy hands together when he talked, and when he broke out impetuously— "The Black Diamond! Tou could buy the whole of Cairo with it. By Allah, you could!" his black, dog-like eyes glittered, and he thumped his wooden stump on the cobble- stones to lend force to his argument. "Still," I returned, "my friend, that would not be much. Cairo? What is it but a nest of starving mongrels that eat up what they have to-day and sleep out the morrow?" He threw up his hands with a contemptuous a.ir. "Oh, it would do that. maybe; den maybe it wouldn't. But den how would you like to I own even Cairo, eh?" I smiled blandly and pulled down the brim of my hat. "You force your point well; give us more of your story. I will listen." He paused, looked up ajid down the little street, then glanced over my shoulder into the room beyond. "I will tell yen. You have heard of the Mines of Solomon?" I answered in the affirmative. "But you have not. heard of the Mines of Cleopatra, the great Egyptian queen, and her black diamond, which TLIE wore and glittered like a monster's eye on her breast, and the one which Anthony held between his eyes and said that it could buy a.ll the souls of Rome. Well, out in the heart of this mighty desert that surrounds us there is a mountain. It stands alone, as a sentinel guarding a vast waste. In its granite depths lies the tomb of Cleopatra and the Great Black Diamond. It W;lS buried with her acres and ages ago. Do you believe A stranger?'' I shook my head. It was impossible. "Ro," he said. "I thought as much. But when I show you the chart of the secret mines and the tomb, what den? And. running his left hand up his right sleeve, he produced a yellow parehmeDt-like roll. brown with age. Instantly I i-ec-ogni-sed it as being an ancient document. My long study of Egyptian hie- tory enabled me to identify its nature imme- diately. and. springing to my feet, I ex- claimed "Where did you get that? Know you what it reads?" It was his time to emile blandly, and. turn- ing on me, said "I. your lordship, am but-an humble boats- man on the Nile; but it so behoves the Great Allah that 1. Ishmet. should find and possess in after ages what the Queen Cleopatra. has loft. At first I was ignorant of its meaning, but now-be it Allah s will again—I^NOW." I laughed. "Then, if you are holder of such A won- derful secret, why do you ooane to a stranger r to extol it? You are either a fool or a fakir. Ma foi! I know not which." ) "Pardon, I am neither. I pass your door. I see you are A stranger, a foreigner, yes. Yon smoke your pipe and look the grand signor, yes. But the God Ma.mmon ees a, good friend of yours; you take money every time it comes your way. It is English. Now, I say to myself—This man is a. stranger; he will not tell secrets in a strange land; he looks for money; he ees in for all he can get. It ees Enoglish-yes. I will tell him my secret. He will buy the mules, and we will travel together, and when we find the treasure he buys my part and. takes the treasure away. You are rich; you can do dat. But no one J of my OWN oountry can. save the rich and the mighty. And they would seize it—yes, ) and Ishmet would hab nothing." And, striking A comic attitude of deep woe. my friend with the wonderful secret* and the i wooden stump made a dramatic pause. "You put up a wonderful story," I 1 answered. "How far is the mountain from hpre?" • '"Four days' ride, signor. if we travel at night when it is cool. It is near the ancient Õ site of the city of Aecnipoli, built in an oasis 7 .where the Queen Cleopatra. dwelt in the S season of the hot suns." At the mention of the city of Accnipoli I was in a flutter. It was a place which I bad desired to visit above all other places, and the result was that before the rise of the sun on the next day we had entered the desert on our journey, fully equipped for a long stay. We travelled mostly at nights, and on the r morning of the fourth day we came in sight of the solitary mountain in the Bakarah plateau. Wb lost no time in beginning our search along the ragged sides of the mountain for I the mouth of the cavern, which the chart I marked out as being the passage that would lead us to the secret vaults hewn out of the granite heart of the mountain. But it was o not till high noon, after a long two hours' a weary search, that Ishmet, the fakir, set up J the hue and cry far below me that he had discovered the cavern's mouth. A great B boulder had been placed over it, but there e was an opening left to one side of the rock large enough to enable a. man's body to pass through. And. thrusting a lantern through the crevice, I peered below, and, to my sur- ( prise, I beheld not more than ten feet below a flight of steps hewn out of the living rock. The fakir was jubilant, and, offering to lead the way, he let himself down the hole and dropped. I followed, and a moment later a hoarse moan broke on our ears. It was the sound of the wind passing down the cavern. Then with our lanterns held out before us we followed the passage at A steep incline. We kept up this steady pace for some time, until we were suddenly stopped by a wall of granite. From all U.p<T>eard.nces it looked as if we had come to the end f our journey. But my companion again eet up the hue and cry that we had come to onr goal. "Look!" he gasped. "Look, man! By Allah, the vaults are above us!" I looked and saw an opening in the ceiling over us. And, bidding the fakir to steady himself, I mounted his shoulders and clam- bered through the aperture, drawing the lantern after me. and found myself on my KNEES before a, giant being of ferocious aspeot with raised hatchet in one of his big hands. The first thing I thought of wa.s to let out a yell, of warning, but in throwing up my arms in my fright I cast the yellow reflections of the lantern full on the terrible figure before me, and saw that it was a thing of stone, nothing more. And. calling to the Arab to throw up his coil of rope, I held fast to one end of it while the fellow with smothered groans scrambled up like an overgrown monkey. So intensely dark was it that our lights made but a dim impression in A't.hc thick, heavy, blackness abouttrs. And we found it necessary to feel our way part of the time and to drag ouraeJves on ail fours. And in this way I happened to an accident by suddenly PLUNGING1 my hacde flat DOWNWARD into a hole which proved TO be about four feet deep. I called for help, 12rm I moticed I was on my knees Dciore anotner UGU™. holding the light on a level with my faoo* learned the fact that I was staring in that shrivelled one of a. mummy. I had bruized my shins and lay staring speechlessly at the face near me, with its empty eye sockets and its grinning teeth and the glittering object that rested on its forehead. "Ishmet," I cried, "what is this?" Then 11 knew. It was the Great Black Diamond. Ani, I tore it from the shrunken forehead and held 'I it under the light to examine it. It was a. beau- tifully cut stone, and much larger, I saw at A 'I glance, than the Great Mogul possibly more than 300 carats in weight. And engraved upon the flat side of it was the head of Cleopatra*, a beautiful piece of workmanship. The fakir- was again jubilant, and, plucking me by the sleeve, he began to hurry me out of the vault.. "It is not good," he gasped, with chattering teeth, "to tarry with the dead. Let us begone. By AllaJi! that staring thing will haunt mjT dreams." And, dragging me along with him, we soon found ourselves breathing fresh air again. On reaching Cairo safely I gave Ishmet JE500 in English gold and parted with him—to see him no more. And on the same day I made preparations to cross over to Europe with my precious burden. It was then that I found out that I had been the victim of fraud. and I woke to realise the bitter truth. But I had not been the only one who had suffered in the game, and, finding a little consolation in that, I kept, my secret to myself. Ishmet, the fakir. was a jeweller by trade, and was famous for his wonderful achieve- ments in the art of making fake diamonds, swindling, and crime. And 1. as were others. was one of his victims. During the past year lie had guided more than a dozen adventurers to tho lonely mountain in the Bakarah. plateau, and each one. as L had the honour of staring at the shrivelled countenance of Cleopatra, and the exclusive right to rob that, notable lady of the Great Black Diamond.

A Tall Story. Horace Greeley. the most famous of Ameri- can. journalists, was notorious as producing the most absolutely undecipherable hand- writing that any man has been known to put on paper. In the "New York Tribune" Office MOsl of his ('op,- was set by one man. named Linkway, who boasted that he could read Greeley's copy at three yards with one eye shut. Ho was so proud of his ability in thin respect that the whole composing stan-longed to humble him. It so happened that two young roosters were kept in the office, where they waxed fat on primer's ink and paste; but their tempera did not improve, for they took to fighting bfldly. One day one of the birds chanced to step on an ink roller, and then over a sheeti of paper, and a great Jight broke on the fore- man compositor's mind. The next, evening he and some fellow-con- epirators came in early, covered over the floor with sheets of Greeley's usual writing paper, inked the birds' feet, and set them to fight. The ink was renewed every few minutes, and in half an hour every sheet was covered with hieroglyphics. Then the foreman gathered up the pages, numbered them, and scrawled a head on the first one, "The Plain Duty of Congress." in imitation of Greeley's FCA.nd. then the sheets were left in Larkway's neigh- bourhood. Ho came in, took the copy, slammed it DOWN on his case, and picked up his stick. EVERY man in the room held his sides, but. by the Goddess of Truth, L-arkway began to set it1? At the end of the second line he began to look a little troubled, and we thought our moment of victory was come; but he only, swore a little, re-filled his pipe, picked np his stick, and went on again until he got almost to the bottom of the last page. Here he struck at a place where one of the roosters had slapped down the edge of his wing, also inky. Larkway studied over it for a, long time. and then he said to the foreman, "Darn it. the best of us get hung up on a word once in » while. What's that. down there.?" "Don't* ask me." said the foreman. "You know IT can't read the stuff. Go down and ask the old man himself." I JaTkwa,y shuffled ont, went into the chiefs room, and said, in a low tone: "Mr. Greeley, Tm stuck. What is this word?" Greeley snatched the sheet from his hand impatiently, studied it a moment, and then squeaked in his highest voice: "'Uncon- stitutional,' sir. Great Jehosophat! it seems to me sometimes as if this office was full of pesky college graduates, and after I've given the janitor strict orders not to allow one of 'em in the building!"

ÆSTHETIC "My dear, don't you intend to invite Mr. and Mrs. Green to your party?" asked Mr. BiJler. "Certainly not." "Why not. my dear? They are good friends of ours." "What if they are? A BAD HEADACHE. An English lady who visited America, many yea,rs ago used to tell the following story:—< On the voyage she was one day shocked by seeing a ship's officer knock down one of the crew who was inclined to mutiny. So much did the sight affect her. that she retired to her cabin, and did not again appear on deck until land was sighted. Approaching him, she asked. with deep sympathy; "How is your head, now?" "Weet-and-by-nor'. ma'am," was the answer,
