,PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT.…
PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. A WOMAN OF WILES. I I A Story of Hearts and Diamonds. By ALICK MUNRO. tCOPYEIGHTJ CHAPTER XX. I AN OATH ON THE OBLONG BOX. But while Fort lay on his back, ex- hausted, Hetty had broken the rusted hinges of the box with a. sharp stone, and was raising the ,lid. It was high time for Bloxham and me to take our share in I the game. "Cover the widow with your gun, for form's sake!" I said. "Never mind Fort." We ran quickly down to the water level, and got to within ten yards of Hetty before she heard us coming. With a cry she snapped, dQwn the lid of the box, and turned and faced us. I pointed my revolver at her heart. "Hands up!" I said. "or I fire." Mere clap-trap, of course; for naturally I did not mean to fire, and she knew that I did not; but all the same I was interested to see that she did throw her hands up. The re-,ponse to my command: came quite auto- matically, and, I thought, involuntarily; and it struck me that perhaps, at some time in the past, aha bad heard the same command before, when to have disobeyed it might really have meant death. However, almost before the movement was completed, she let her hands drop again, saying with a laugh: "Oh, you! Don't be absurd. "Do you know. Miss Williams," I said. still ikeeping the pistol levelled at her. "that I reaily thin It it's my trick this time?" 'T And then I, too, laughed; for the situation was a singularly pleasing one, Hetty faced my levelled pistol with a smile; but behind the smile there lay a look of the most poignant disappointment, which, fine actress though she was, she could not wholly conceal. For she was beaten, and it was I who held the winning hand now. The box of treasure lay at her feet; the diamonds were almost in her pocket; but she coulii not stretch out her hand to put them there. Her chance was gone, and she knew it; for the diamonds were Neenah's, not hers; and I was there to see that Neenah got them. It was,not the pistol only, which ehe knew I should not use-thougb the pistol wias, after all. some- thing, since she had only a dagger; it was simply the presence of that oblong box which gave me my overwhelming advantage. So long as neither party knew where the dia- monds were, either party might hope to out- wit the otheT in the search for them; but now that we both knew, now that either of UB could, merely by moving a foot, touch the box which contained them, there was no ques- tion ae to which of us must take them home. Short of murdiering both Bloxham and me, there was no way by which she could regain them now. And even the double murder would hardly have served, for Port-ogal is a law-abiding country on the whole, and would not have tolerated a crime like that, com- mitted within twenty miles of its capital. As I said before, the widow should ha.ve taken her whole household with her when she drove away in the night-time. That little note, which the Portuguese maid handed to me last night, had just made all the difference. So, though she laughed, her eyes shone angrily through her laugrh; and the whiteness of her elfish face was marred by tired lines, which showed that the excitement of a long struggle was over, and had ended in defeat. "Before I lower my revolver," I said, "will you please hand over your dagger?" I "You are becoming prudent!" she flashed j out. "It is, perhaps, a.bout time." "I hate to expoes even the strongest to temptation." I replied, with a smile. "How do you know I have a. dagger?" "I don't know. I guess. You were not ex- pecting an attack last night, but you had a dagger ready. I daresay you ha.ve contracted the prudent habit of carrying one always." "Another recent dev.elopment--youfre get- ting clever!" she laughed soornfully, as she drew a little jewelled stiletto from her bosom, and handed it to me. I took it with a bovf. I could afford to ignore the snub. "It's a frail little bit of steel," I said, as the dagger lay across my palm. "Quite a lady's weapon, isn't it?—almost too dainty for Uèe! But I have had proof that it can strike a good blow." "Will the man i She shot the questioft out sharply, and her tone of scornful defiance was gone. Instead, there was a. note of strong anxiety, which it pleased me to hear. She had bad a night to think over what she had done, and she re- gretted it. But she knew how truly she had Btruck. "Yes," I said cruelly, "he will die." Her eyes grew scared, and a quiver shook her lips; and when I saw that I relented at once, and added softly: "Sometime." "What do you mean?" she cried. "Are you playing with me?" "I say he will die sometime. We all must, you know. But,I don't think that, in his case, your hand has hastened the inevitable end. You aimeft at his heart, and hit his tobaicao." "He was lucky!" she said, with a careless- ness which was exaggerated and palpably assumed. "So I told him." "But I'm very glad," she added. with an earnestness which was wholly real. "I hoped you would be, .but I said drily, "I could not from past experience be quite sure, you know." She shivered, and then gave me a steady look, saying quietly: "I told you once I could cause a. tragedy, didn't 1? I meant that I could cause it, and not repent afterwards, and-I thought I could. But last night, after I had struck at tha.t man's heart, I-well, I found I couldn't!" And with a curious little gesture, she added: "Does that mean that I am a coward?" "It means," I said—and I tried to speak kindly, for I pitied her—"that you are less of the 'devil' than Fort says you are, and more of the 'woman' I have always believed you to be. And I am delighted to find that I am right." "Thank you! she said softly, and then added:. "Don't \rOll think it's time we were looking after Mr. Fort?" Now I had forgotten Fort; and, curiously enough, he had not done anything yet. to force himself upon may attention. He had not taken the slightest notice of the inter- ruption which Charlie and 1 had made by our arrival, and he was lying now just as he had thrown himself down, with his head pillowed on his arm, and his eyes closed. "I believe the beggar's asleep!" said Charlie. "Hey! you, Fort! Wake up, man!" But even at this summons Fort did not move. He was asleep. We shouted his name again, and made the echoes ring with it, but he did not hear. The prospect of getting him off the rock without further injury to his damaged leg had been remote enough in the beginning, and we saw that every moment I was making it more remote. For the tide was rising steadily, and would soon cover the rock again. The water between us and him swept one way and the other in strong rushes, as the swell entered and was sucked back again. He had been able to swim on the far side of the rock, but neither he nor we oould do 80 here. "Try a. revolver shot," IF said. "If that doesn't wake him, one of is will have to do as he did-jump "I got my 'blue' for jumping at Oxford." said Charlie, at he cocked hie putol, "but, all tho same, £ devoutly hope that this"—and he fired—"will do the trick!" The shot, in the confined space of the Booca do Inferno. made a most terrific din, and Fcrt raifced his head sightly. Then a wave, rather bigger than its predecessors, surged round his rock; and the spray of it slapped him in the face. He sat up, and looked across at us sleepily. "Hullo!" he said, when his mind at last awoke to the fact that Hetty had unexpected and unwelcome companions. "What's hap- pened, now?" "Lots of things," I said cheerfully; "hut you can hear about them afterwards. How do you propose to join us?" "Eh?" "How ate you going to get back, you fool? Wake up! You can't jump with that knee of yours, you know. What are you going to do?" "Swim, I suppose," he said stolidly. "Swim?—rot! You'd be smashed to a. jelly if you tried it, on this side. Here, catch the ] rope!" "What for?" "Oatch it! Now bind the end of it round your body, and throw the other end to me. We must trans-ship you by the same path the box came by. Get ready to fend him off from the side, Charlie. Better lie down. hadn't you? Now, Fort, wait for the slack-water, just after the swell passes, and tumble in sharp when I give the word. Ready? Wait haIf-a-minute- now!" Fort did as he was told, with a kind of mechanical obedience. He could hardly stand, but he slid into the water promptly as I gave him the word. I hauled him across with the rope at the very moment when the water was quietest, and Charlie caught him in his arms, and dragged him up on to dry land with one huge pull. He had escaped with nothing more serious than an additional bruise or two; and that was greater luck than L for one, had dared to hope he would have. He sat down beside the box, and when, his eye fell on it he seemed to remember, and glanced up at me inquiringly. I answered his I unspoken question with a laugh, a.nd then he turned to Hetty. She made a little grimace of disappointment and resignation, at which he smiled and shrugged his shoalders. It was all very pretty pantomime; but per ps j Charlie and I were in a better position than the other pair to appreciate the full humour of the situation. "Come," I Nlid, "it isn't so bad as it might have been. you know. You two can fairly claim salvage dues; and I daresay Miss Mon- crieff will be prepared to consider the claim, if you put it nicely, and are not too greedy. But we can talk about all that afterwards. Meanwhile, it's high time we were leaving this interesting spot, if we don't want the tide to cut us off. Fort, can you walk?" "Yes, with somebody's arm to lean on." "All right, I'll help you till we come to the level. Charlie, you take the valuables." Charlie bent down to pick up the oblong box, and, as lie did so. the butt of his revolver stuok invitingly out of his jacket-pocket. Hetty saw the invitation, and was tempted by it. But I had ueen it at the same moment, and her fingers closed on the revolver as mine closed on her wrist. "We're too chivalrous," I said grimly. "You're a woman, but we shall have to ask you to do the heavy work, after all. Let go, please! Thank you. Now, Charlie, we'll re- arrange things a bit. The lady will carry the luggage, and you'll walk behind her (with your revolver in your hand, mind), to see that she doesn't fall. I'm sorry to be so ungallant, but you see it's necessary." She drew herself up, and I thought she was going to refuse angrily to do what I said. But the next moment, with one of her charac- teristic and bewildering sudden changes, she let the defiant look vanish from her eyes in a laugh, as she said: "Why don't you always take that tone? Bully me, Mr. Delabere-bully me hard-always bully me! I like you when you do that. There!"—she added, as she took the box in her arms—"you see? Even well enough to obey orders, and play the beast of burden for you without a murmur!" "I promise," I said dryly, as I helped Port to his feet, "to act strictly on this advice for the future." "Yes. do!" she retorted; "with me and Neenah. and with every other -wo you are wise!" ] "With Neenah, too?" I a.sked. AwIfne now. ] "Yes. with Neenah too' f pleased with; you just now, in spite of tbfc&J B0' before I repent. I'll tell you a ,—ist. I won't tell Neerah I told yoo. *n_€very "ingle woman of ti»-iove goof who bullieft UI And then she led the way over the rocks with her burden. Charlie followed her, and Fort and I fol- lowed Charlie. She set us a good pace, makinc little of the encumbrance in her arms, and climbing lightly, gracefully, and with nelver stumble or a false step. Charlie prudently kept-within touch of her. but he had to put his "*■ pistol in his pocket again to do it; and, as for Fort and me, we,soon dropped behind. Just before the leaders came to the rocky cleft which gave the path to the high ground above. I called to Charlie to wait lor us. He put out his hand to stop Hetty, but she shook him off proudly, and I heard her tell him that, though he had been made her policeman, he needn't; overact the part. Then she laid the box down, and sat upon it. "Is Fraser with the carriage?" I called out to her. "No: So you can, come along boldlylike brave boy!" she answered, with a laugh. "Who is looking after the horses?"' "Nobody." 1. "Is that true?" I asked Fort in a low tone. I thought it probably was, because the fact that they had stayed to fasten the horees up would account for the few minutes' delay which had occurred before they had come down the rock pathway. "Yes," he said? "they're unyoked and tethered behind." "Go on, Charlie," I shouted. "We'll meet at the top." But if the red-haired coachman was not with the carriage, where was he? Lpft behind to guard Neenah, probably. I turned to Fort and asked him angrily why he had consented to such an arrangement, when he might have stayed himself, and let the other man come with Hetty. "You and I are enemies now," I said bit. terly; "but I did rely on J'OØ not to let that red-haired brute have tb- guarding of Miss Moncrieff. And then he told me Fraser had gone to make arrangements #0r immediate flight from Portugal, in case it 8f°^a turn out that the man whom Hetty stabbed last night was seriously injured. Hetty and Fort meanwhile were to get the jewels irom the Booca, and then meet Fraser at a place arranged between them. They did not know. Fort explained, that Neenah had told her secret to me too, or they would have taken steps to prevent our surprising them. Then he, too, asked me anxiously whether the map had been killed. had been killed. (To be continued to-morrow.)
