PUBLISHED BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT. A W0MAN~0F WILES. I I A Story of Hearts and Diamonds. By ALICK M-UNRO. [COPYRIGHT.) CHAPTER XIX, Continued. The moon dropped slowty. and dipped into the bath of ocean. The shadows lost their definiteness. and grew greyer by the fading of tho hight lights about them. A few minutes later the moon dipped wholly into the flood, and the scene before me was blotted in an even darkness. A faint phos- phorescence shone in the water, and flickered ghoet-like in the foam below; and the swish of the eddies whispered unceasingly, and echoed faintly from the rock walla around. If the t/reasure4Hmters camn now, we ehotrtd see nothing that they did. But the dawn oouid not be far off, and, even if they were before it,, they would wadt for its light to help them in their work. Half- an-hour passed, and a blue glow stole almost imperceptibly over the ocean; the archway showed faint, and then more clearly, against the tinted water. The blue changed to purple -the refl.ectioa from the eastern sky behind- and then to a Yellow red. And then with a burst it was day. For the dawn, like the gloaming, is bat a. matter of minates in the summer South. Ten minutes more, and at last a sound of horses' feet cairw faintly and intermittently to my ears. Were these thte visitora for whom .we were waiting? They had timed their coming well, if indeed it were they! I put my hand out to waken Btoxham, and then drew it back—no use to diotorh- him till I was sore. Still, it. mast be they.; for. except, perhaps, eome belated emmtrymaa in his cart, who else could it be, at this hour of the morning, and on these lonely roads? I listened intently. Tcss. the horses were trotting; and they were a. pair! It waa no countryman; it was Hetty; for it could be no one else! But who was with her? Had she brought Neenah, too? I would have given anything to know. I waited until I could hear the wheels.. and then I wakened Bloxlram- "Have they come?" he whispered eagerly. "No," I answered, "but they're coming!" And even to my ears it was evident that the ring of excitement in his voioe was echoed and accenuated in my own as I gripped his arm and said: "Those are their wheels. Cock your pistol!" Now Obarlie's revolvers were old-fasmoned weopona, and made a loud click as the ham- mers came up; and so tense was the strain on my nerves that, though I expected the sound; I was startled by it, and gave a. little jump when it came. A fragment of rook was loosened by my foot, and fell with a. rattle into the cauldron below. "That would have given the show away, if they'd been here," laughted Charlie softly. "Pull yourself together, old man." The sound of the carriage, wheels came nearer; it was cloeo above us now; it stopped! That settled the matter; no doubt who the new arrivals were now! We waited, expecting immediately to see some one come down the steep rook descent towards no. Five minutes paoood. ten—and then a stone rolled down the pathway. A foot had disturbed -that rtone. Some one was coming at last! Two figures came into sight, a man's and a woman's, picking their way down the elenft. The man was Fort, and the woman was Hetfey, dressed once more in the proper garments of her sex. Tbea where was Frae«r? Up &bov% perhaps, guarding Neenah and. the carriage* I whispered to Bloxham that. as soon as these two had got well past ue and down to thie water, I meant to crawl up the path to seje vrblether Neenah was in the carriage or not. 'r "And ths widow would apot; you at onoe h e. objected. "Don't be an aea." "But if Neenah'e up there, in the handa ot that red-haired brute of a Scotchman "Well, what if she is?" "Let's make a dash, and rescue her!" "And the diamonds?" he aeked in an im- patient whisper, "which they know where to look for, and we don't! Rot! Wait a bit. and play the whole hand out properly. Besides, j Neenah isn't there. They've had plenty of.1 time to put her away in some sale plao& before they came." That was true; they had had time; and! the chances were quite ten to one-that Ncenahi! was not in the carriage above. But in my fears for her safety that one ohance weighed! more than all the otjier ten, and it was with difficulty that I forced myself to resist the temptation tomake certain; though, as Charlie said, I should be seen at once if I tried. J "Even if they hawe got her up there, she's- as safe in the carriage as anywhere else," hct declared confidently. "They won't hurt her. now that they've got her secret. Sit tight, and watch, and see about getting those gew-,1 gaws for her." Hetty and Fort had reached the water-level, now, and were clambering from point to points of rock, out towards the arched entrance. Bloxham whispered that the widow should have 1 stu-ck to her Spanish costume, since it wonld have been more appropriate for the work; I but I did not agree with him. Clad as she was, she climbed lightly and with a lissom grace; in her boy's costume she might have gained freedom of movement, but she would have lost the graoe. I daresay, moreover., that she was quite alive to this fact, and had; changed for no other reason; though, so faf aa she knew, there was no one to see her bat] Fort. and he was ciimbing in front of her. Th« tide had fallen dnxiac tine &a*"ve had jn waiting, and there were places bare now which hai been. covered with a soapy surf when we arrived. Fort was carrying a coil of roi)e and a thing which looked like a small grappling-iron. They seemed to be making for a flat-topped rock which lay a little back from the arch, and nearly in the centre of the path of the entering swell. As leach wave rolled in, the surface of this rock was just awash, and then in the intervals of the waves it was bare again, save for the covering of seaweed and the hundred little rills of escaping water which cascaded down its flanks. When the climbers arrived at a point opposite to the rock, they stopped, and Hetty took from her pocket two pieoes of yellow paper, which the pair of them then I began to consult. Those two pieces of yellow paper were, n) doubt, the torn fragnaents of the leaf from the old Portuguese breviary, one ] of which bad been stolen months ago- in the Johannesburg office, and the other more re- cently in the Amsterdam slum, on the night when Fort met me at the Bible Hotel. The red cross which marked the hiding-place of the jewels was on one of them, and that hiding-place was somewhere in all this mseasy swirl of waters. They studied the old prayer-leaf intently for a minute. Then Fort pointed to a carious stalactite-like finger, whioh hung from the summit of th-, archway; and Hetty nodded. Then they both turned round, and seemed to stare straight at the place where we were lying. We hardly dared to breathe. Would they see us? It soon became evident that they did not, for we were still in hea-vy shadow; and then I heard Fort say: "It's between those two"—and again Hetty nodded. The object at which they were gazing was tbo great jaesed spire behind which we were great jaesed spire behind which we were sheltering, and apparently the red cross said that tbie jewels lay somewhere on a line between it and the finger on the arch. I followed this imaginary line with my eye, and calculated that it would just ehave the edge of the flat, weed-covered rock beside Fort and Hetty. But the edge which the line touched was the further edge, and between them and the nearer edge was nearly ten feet of water, which heaved in an oily way that suggested it was deep. How did they pre pose to cross thaif I Fort meant to jump it! With a bad take off. and a. landing on slippery seaweed, it was a leap which might mean a. broken limb; but he did not hesitate. He handed the rope which ¡! he waa carrying to Hetty, gathered himself together, and sprang. He landed six inches beyond the edge of the rock, and threw him- self forwarl on to his face, where he lay panting for a. moment, with his fingers feuried deep ih the rank weed. To save life, that would have been called a. gallant, leap, and even with the motive that it had it was a thing to be admired; for he must have known that if he broke a limb in doing it there was little i chance that. Hetty would be able to bring him to land before the tide rose again and covered him. We had watched the leap with an involuntary sympathy for its reckless daring, and we waited now almost breath- lessly to sae whether he would rise from it with his limbs all sound. But at present he made no movement to rise at all. Hetty knew the risks as well M we did. for we heard her crying out to know whether he was hurt. "Yes," he said slowly. "I can't feel my right knee." "Broken?" she asked anxiously. "Wait a minute." he said. 'Tin feeling pretty sick. Tell you presently!" He turned half-over on to his side, and. dipping his hand in a pool. dashed the salt- water over his face. Then he sat up. and twisted his mouth into an expression of agony. "I can feel it now," he said, with a laugh I that was more than half-a-groan. "It's hurt- tag like blazes!" And then, rubbing the part carefully with his hand, he added: "No, 'tisn't broken. There's a nasty cut. though. I ex- pect I've jarred the nerve a bit." "Can you bend it He tried. "Yes." he said. "a little; but it hurts con- foundedly. It's—oh. you know!—just like a. bad knock on the funny-bone. I dare say it'll I pass off in a minute, though. How am I by fthe croea-line?" Hetty consulted the map again, and then by two landmarks whose position I could not see, APPEARED to *J».VA A second line at right angles to the first one. "You're exactly on it#" <& £ said. "The place to the first one. "You're exactly on it#" <& £ said. "The place I must be just off the far edge of the rock. But cam you stand ?" "No," he answered, "not yet; but I can crawl. Heave over the fishing-tackle." He caught the rope and grappling-iron which she threw to him, and then made his way painfully on hands and knees to the far edge of the rock. He knotted the rope to the iron, and tried the depth with it- Just clear of the rock, he found about five feet; but a couple of yards out the bottom seemed to shelve, and it was shallower. Then. lying on his face, be began1 to make casts all about him with the iron, throwing it out from him as far as he could reach, and then drawing it up slowly. But all the catch that rewarded his fishing was sea-weed, and, though; he persevered for nearly half-an-hour, he made no more profitable haul. Hetty stood like a figure carved of marble, with clasped hands in front of her. and eyes fixed steadily on that patient fisherman who toiled and caught nothing. She made no movement of any kind until at length a sudden exclamation from Fort gal- vanised her into life again, and brought a. sharp eager cry to her lips: "What is it? Oh! have you found it?" He made no answer, but drew his line in more slowly and carefully than ever, until something which looked like a large ball of seaweed appeared on the surface of the water. "It's some sort of a cage," he shouted; "but it's covered with weeds." He raised it still further out of the water. and as he did so the seaweed fell a little away from it; and even we, at our distance, could make out a kind of wicker of rusted iron. "There's something inside it," he cried ex- citedly. "Looks like a box! I wonder if—oh, the devil I" The exclamation with which he ended was caused by the fact that his grappling-iron came away suddenly from its hold on the wicker-cage. The ancient rusted metal, cor- roded with the decay of more than a century, had broken under the strain of being lifted out of the water. The cage, with its festoons of seaweed, and the thing inside, which looked like a box. slipped back into its hiding- place below the water with hardly a splash; and Fort had to begain his fishing all over again. But this time he had quicker luck, for at the third cast he hooked the cage again, and. prudent by experience, now drew it up only to the'surfacs of the water. Then, keep- ing the line taut. he wound it in coils round his chest, till it was short enough to allow him to reach the iron cage with his biods. Carefully he lifted it out. placed it on the rock, and tore away the encircling weeds. But the thing which looked like a box wa.a no longer there. The cage was empty- "The corfcunded thing has burst!" he ex- claimed. with an angry oath- "Look here!" He took the rotten iron ovd broke it with his fingers, as easily ohild would snap willow twigs. •<«— ««A iUelt" erj+fl A'iiS?' "But quick, quick! The tide is beginning too rise again." "No use!" toe said. "There's nothing for the- grapple to fasten to. I must go in." He roee to a standing position and took hit coat off. It was evident that his knee was hurting him badly still, and he could not quito straighten himself. But without a momfent s hesitation he let himself painfully over tho edge of the rock and into the water. Tho t.ide-thongh, as Hetty said, it was rising again now—had fallen a good foot since he first jumped on to the rock, and eo, when hi* feet touched ground, he was not covered much, higher than his waist. But a badly-lamed man, standing on a treach-jrous and unknown bottom. with moving water up above his waist, is not in a position of much security; and more than once, as he fnmbled with bia feet to find the box. he slipped, and losing his foothold, had to let himself go, swim a stroke or two, and then begin again. But he would not give in, though two or three times we could see him grit his teeth when a false step found out his weak place and sent a spasm of pain across his face, Fort was not a man of many virtues, perhaps; but he had, at any rate, saving grace of an indomi- table plusk. For twentv minutes more he ftuck to it, and found nothing, and the water had risen per- ceptibly higher on his body. He would ¡¡- compelled to give in soon. But at last, just as Bloxham had whispered to me that five minutes would see the end now, he called out to Hetty that he tlrought he had touched the box again. Then, without a pame-fot the rising tide made time precious -he 'bent his head down and disappeared wholly under the water.. Ten seconds later he appeared again, and the box was in his hands. It was all that I could do to restrain a shout, and I heard Bloxham murmur admiringly: "A rare good-pluckt limn. if he's nothing elsf! Bravo, little man!" Fort drew himself on to the rock again, hugging his treasure. It was a small oblong chest, abcut two feet long, and about ten inches broad and deep; but of what material it was made we could not see. He fastened- one end of the rope round it. threw the other end to Hetty, and watched :1' draw the box through the water at the place where he had jumped. Then be laid himself down flat on his back on th3 rough, seaweed-covered rock, and seemed not to care for anything more; for his Ion? effort had left him utterly ex- hausted. He made a pillow of his arm for his head, and shut his eyoes, whilst Hetty opened the precious receptacle t.hat contained the prize for which he. and all of ns, had been fighting. Here waa the treasure, found at laet !the earthquake diamonds which the old gentleman who was Neenah's great-great- grandfather had hidden in the year 1755! t don't think any of us doubted that. cro be continued to-morrow.)
