FIGHTING CONSUMPTION. INTERESTING EXPERIMENTS ON CHILDREN. Friday's session of the International Tuber- culoeis Conference in Vienna was chiefly devoted to a discussion on the subject of the official notification and registration of cases of tuberculosis. The conference agreed upon a compromise to the effect that a volun- tary system of registration should be encou- raged. upon a compromise to the effect that a volun- tary system of registration should be encou- raged. It was agreed that registration of deaths from tuberculosis should be compulsory; also that a change of residence of tuberculous j patients mu&t be reported so that the premises vacated might be disinfected. Dr. Klein ens Perqu-et presented an interest- ing report On his experiments in the inocu- lation of infants with tuberculin in order to detect the pi-e-senoe of tuberculous germs Hss investigations proved that where germs existed a reaction was shown in the soreness of the scarifications. The experiments pro- I duced no fever or other untoward symptom, and in cases of perfectly healthy infants the experiments were entirely harmless. Dr. Perquet's discovery attracted much attention, and the opinion was generally expressed that it would prove extremely valu- able.—Reuter.

COMMEMORATIVE FOUNTAIN AT CARDIFF. A fountain, which is a most effective and handsome structure has just been erected in North-road, Cardiff, at the juncture where the thoroughfare emerges upon the open space in front of the new Law Courts and City-hall, 'l'he fountain is in perpetuation THE MEMORIAL FOUNTAIN TO THE LATE I MR. SAMUEL, J.P. I of the memory of the late Mr. Louis Samuel, first Jewish magistrate for the city, and the contributors, as set forth in the inscription, are deceased's brothers, one of whom, Mr. Isaac Samuel, succeeds deceased as a- magis- trate, and, like him is the only Hebrew J.P. The total height of the fountain is 18ft. Sin.; it is of finely axed red granite, and there are four drinking basins, with grey granite columns to match.

SAILORS' MISSION CLUB. OPENED BY MR. RICHARD OORY AT CARDIFF. The neW saalam, mission, dob which has been established at the Bote Docks. Cardiff, was formally opened by Mr. Richard Oory on Friday afternoon, before a large amdience. The club. which is to be ran under the aaspioes of the Incorporated Seamen and Boatmen's Friend Society, is situated at No. 3, Sta&rt- streat, direotfly opposite the Pierhead. There is one large room which will be found very convenient for the holding of meetings, Ac. Specially-appointed officials will be told off to watch all ships coming into port with the object of acquainting sea- men of the fact that the accommodation at i. the premises is at their disposal. Mr. Richard < Cory (who presided) mentioned that the premises opened by Lord Tredegar in New-1 port lately had met with great success, and he hoped that the Cardiff club would be appreciated to the same extent. Mr. Gory then performed the interesting ceremony of hoisting the Union Jack over the premises.

A REGULAR KLEPTOMANIAC STEALS THE PROPERTY OF PRINCIPAL BKBB. George Wilson, 105, Dale-street, Liver- pool, saddler, alias Charles Jones, alias George White, was brought up on remand at Lampeter on Friday charged with steal- ing on September 7 various articles of clothing, the property of Principal Bebb, St. David's College, also an umbrella, value 10s 6d., the property of Margaret Hannah Jones, and a walking-stick, value 6d., the property of Dr. E. H. Griffiths, at North- road, Lampeter. Accused pleaded guilty, and said he could only tell the bench that when he was in drink he was a regular kleptomaniac. He was committed to prison for six months with hard labour for the first offence, and three months' hard labour for the other two offences, the sentenoes to run concurrently.

FISHING ON THE TEIFY. At a meeting held at the Porth Hotel, Llandyssul, on Friday of the Teify Board of Conservators, Mr. D. J. Lloyd, Gilfachwen, in the chair, the head water-bailiff read his report, showing the weight of fish despatched from Cardigan, Cilgerran, Newport, and Newcastle Emlyn, as compared with last year. The salmon caught with rod and line during the season amounted to 115, of which 70 had been taken since the last meeting of the boa.rd on Jnpe 21.

"BEST TEST OF SOBRIETY." NEWPORT LICENSEE'S SINGULAR DEFINITION. Two prosecutions under the Licensing Laws were preferred at Newport on Friday against John Charles Carruthere, licensee of tho Royal Oak Inn, Jeddo-etreet. Specifically th 3 charges were, for selling beer to a drunken man, named Michael Slattery, and for permitting drunkenness on the licensed premises. Police-sergeant Friend said that he visited the Royal Oak Inn at 10.50, and found Slattery, who lived at 93. Jeddo-street, on tie premises in a state of drunkenness, with drooping head and incoherent speech. He called the attention of the landlord to the man, saying: "Are you aware of this man's condition?" The landlord replied: "I san see he has had a d.-op." Slattery thereupon drank the contents of a glass of beer he had with him, and was soon taken out by two friends. Then the police-scrgesuit again called attention to the man's state, but be again answered. "The man is not drunk." The poiice-sergeant then stated, I am satis-1 fied that he is, and I am going to take him to the police-station, and you may bring any- one you like to examine him." Ten minutes later at the station, Police- sergeant Friend once more asked Mr. Carruthers, referring to Slattery's condition, "Have you any doubt now?" The reply was, "The man is much worse now." This special care which the police officer took, he ex- plained as being for the purpose of giving the landlord every chance of fairness. Mr. L. Il. Kornby, who appeared for the, defence, pointed out that CarrutherB had conducted the house without a proved com- plaint for six years. Evidence was called to show that Slattery was only served with hop bitters. In the course of his testimony C)arralhers said that one of the proofs that Slattery was sober was that he could open a peculiarly con- structed door of the bar, adding, "It is our boet test of sobriety." Mr. Carruthers ex- plained the fact that Slattery was worse at the police-station by taking a drink of beer from a sriaes beside him. but for which he had not paid, and to being "rushed" by the police through the night air. That treat- ment would have upset a perfectly sober man! A laughable description of drunkenness in this case was given by Polioe-oonetable Smith in the course of the proceedings, when he said that Slattery had lost control of "the spine of his neck and of his lower jaw. The Magistrates decided that the caee against Carruthers would be met by pay- ment of three guineas costs. Slattery for being drunk was fined lOa.

WAR ON MOTORISTS. TWENTY-THREE MILES AN HOUR AT LLAND RINDOD. Joseph Walter Davies, Wolverhampton, was charge at Uandrindod on Friday with having driven a motor-car in a manner daJhgeroue to bhe public at Llandrindod on August 4. According to the police evid-e-nc, the oar covered a measured space of 5o0 yards noar the National Schools at a speed of 23 miles an hour. Walter Rutherford, Maxylbbone-road, Lon- don, was summoned for a similar offence. at the same place and date, the speed also being 25 miles an hour. A fine of £3 and costs was inflicted in each c.a.se, and Rutherford's licence was endorsed. Frederick Mander, of Aberdare, was sum- moned for driving a car to the public dagger on July 31. The complainants in this caee were Arthur Morgan Jones, Lampeter, and D. Milt.on Jones, Pontypridd, who stated that they had a narrow escape of being run over. As the oar came round a corner into South- crescent they estimated the speed at sixteen to eighteen miles an hour. After a lengthy hearing the Magistrates dismissed the case.

WARNING TO CYCLISTS. "I have taken proceedings at great incon- venience to myself, owing to the very general ignorance of the Highway Act, which seems t.o be prevalent," said Mr. J. J. Galloway, 134, Albany-road, Cardiff, to the Newport county magistrates on Saturday. He had pre- ferred a charge against William Muston, a cyclist, for not keeping on the left or near side. Prosecutor said that while motoring to Cardiff on August 31, turing the bend at Ebbw Bridge, he blew the horn for the defendant, who was cycling in the middle of the road, but instead of turning to the left, he wilfully kept over to the righ-hand side. "Had I been driving a heavy car up to the legal limit," added the prosecutor, there would have been grave danger." Mr. Galloway went on to say that he stopped to protest to Muston, whose only reply to the complaints was, You're talking rot," adding that there was plenty of room. In oourt defendant said that he wished to draw to a. wayside fountain. A fine of 10s. amd ooste was imposed.

Dr. Joeiah Cl-ifield, of Harley-street, the well-known advocate of fruit diet, in the course of an interview with a press repre- sentative on Friday eeathingiy criticised &ir James Crichton-Browne's recent remarks regarding the efficacy of meat as diet. "Sir Jamc-s Crichtoa-Browne ha £ been talk- ing about two things," said Dr. OidJteld; first, a-bout what he calls the erase of giris wanting to get t-hin, and, secondly, about the evils of what he calls vegetarianism. With regard to the loweT classes, Sir James is entireiv wrong. The majority of poor girls are already thin through bad food and want of food. They b.a"e no need to try and get thin. There is no finer set of women in the world that I know of than the English higher ciass of the coming generation; and I do not find amongst them anything of such a oraze i- t *ir James taiks about. PERNICIOUS SWEETS. Sir J. Crichton-Browne, interviewed by press representatiTe, absolutely adhered to the statement made in his address as to the quantities of chloroform contained m certain lozenges. The first series were analysed by the Pharmaceutical Society's analyst, bidth agreeing as to the quantity of chloroform which the lozenges, contained. An analysis had also been made on behalf of the British Medical Association. lie further adhered to his opinion as to the pernioous character of these sweete, the fanc<y names of some of which he could if it were advisable.

BETTER THAN NOTHING. LORD ROSEBERY'S POOR OPINION OF THE HOUSE OF LORDS. Lord Rosebery, replying to the toast of "The House of Lords" at a dinner of tne Incorporation of Bonnet-makers and Dyers in Glasgow on Friday night, said he was not a House of Lords' man. He was a Second Chamber man. He had never been able to defend the present constitution of the Houee of Lords. He had stoutly attacked it, and had endeavoured to reform it. But, on the other hand, from the bottom of his heart he was convinced that a second effective Chamber was neceesar-y both for the welfare of the country and the maintenance of its Constitution. Lord Roseoery franker said the House of Lords was suffering in popular reputation, not from what it had done, but from what it had left undone; not for ful- filling its functions, but for having abdi- cated them during the last ten years. If it had always been a Chamber of revision and correction, it would have stood to-day higher ia esteem than it did. The House of Lords might be a weak barrier, but he would rather have a weak barrier than no barrier at all."

RISKS OF CHEAP FRUIT. EXGLISH CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN RHYMNEY VALLEY. An alarming outbreak of what is commonly termed "English cholera" is reported at Pontlottyn. The complaint suddenly made itself apparent in the usual form of sickness, and already about 30 oa.sœ have been booked by the two practising medicos in the town. Some of the oases have been very serious. The wife of Police-sergeant Gammon wa* severely stricken, and at one time her life was despaired of. She has now, however, passed the crisis, through prompt attendance by Dr. Boberts, who lives near at hand. Altogether Dr. Roberts has over a dozen cas-es of the kind to look after. The locum tenens to Dr. Jones described the outbreak as "the" disease of the moment at Pontlotty-n, a.nd be, too, declared that he had a large number of cases on the book, whilst there were some. he thooght, at the Rhymney end of t.he town. Our Rhymney VaJIey reporter has made general inquiries, and finds that other places in the Valley have had outbreaks, but in a. mild form. The exact cause is attributed to the cheap fruit &ent into the valley, notably plums.

CARDIFF'S WATER SUPPLY Mr. C. H. Priest-Icy, the Cardiff waterworks engineer, reported to the waterworks com- mittee, presided over by Alderman David Jones on Friday, that the consumption of water for the month of August wa", :-Heath Reser- voir, 172,020,OCX) gallons; Rhubina Reservoir, of 218,003 being 6,006,774, or 27.55 gallons per consumption per day on estimated population of 218,000, being 6,036,774. or 27.55 gallons per head per day. The month's total consunip- tio, i showed an increase of 9,000,030 gallons on the total of August, 1905. The rainfall returns are interesting, in view of the tirades against the clerk of the weather during the past summer, and the very small increase in the rainfall at Ely and Lisvane will oome as a surprise to many. SERIOUS LOSS OF SHEEP. At a meeting of the Brynau (near Swan- sea) Parish Council remarkable statements were made by Mr. W. Graham Vivian, Mr. Puddicombe, and others as to the mysterious losses of sheep from the Clyne Common during the past few months. They ^re most at rest now, and will begin to grow Biore kindly in new positions than at other tiintis. If the winter is severe they will Remain inactive, but if mild they will be on the move, and to transplant them in the spring would be sure to check them. Catch them when the leaves and stems have withered; then they will be right. All that have been doing badly, with weak growth Qdld poor flowers, should be re-planted. Those 'Which are doing well should be left alone. If in groups or masses, which is the most charming way of growing lilies, think twice before breaking them up. It may be thought they are crowded, and would do better Slanted further apart, but do not attempt this till they show signs of failing. No plants deeply-dug soil more than Miliums. It almost invariably aetniTes their Success, and the first step in their culture is to dig and manure the soil at least two feet deep. If stiff and retentive, put some friable taatter in the bottom, and do not stint labour in preparing sites. Single plants are intereetiTLg, but not impressive. NEWPORT ACCOUNTS AUDIT PRAISE FOR THE CORPORATION OFFICIALS. Sioco the recent publication of the illumi- nating article of Mr. J. S. Taylor, as elective auditor, on the Cardiff Corporation accounts the reports of elective auditors are receiving closer attention throughout the towns of South Wales, and there is a hope that the present somewhat old-fashioned system of municipal audit will re-gain some of the importanoe originally intended for it. The report of Messrs. C. H. Waters and J. Martin Wood on the Newport Corporation accounts for the year ended the 31st of March last is just to band. It states:— Due provision has been made (throughout) out of revenue for Interest on Loans,' and also for Redemption of Loans,' but no additional amount has been provided by way of depreciation (if any) beyond an amount of £ 45 12s. lid. on the Tramway Account, which has been added t6 the existing Renewal Fund,, which now stands at JB1,045 12a. lid. The whole of the accounts have been kept in a systematic manner and with scrupulous care and accuracy; and, in our opinion, present a true and correct view of the trans- actions for the period under review. "We are of opinion that if the system known in book-keeping as the "tabular system could be adopted in the central office a great saving of time and labour- to those concerned would be effected. It will be a satisfaction to the ratepayers to be informed that for the past four years the trading accounts and balance-sheets, Ac., have been kept on similar lines to those recently recommended by the Departmental Committee of the Local GoTOrnment Board, and it is also creditable to the finance com- mittee and officials that they should have anticipated a system wthich seems best to the former committee."

But this will be no theoretical anomaly. It will be a running eore. For unless the whole Church, led by the episco- pate, takes a very firm stand from the first, it can hardly be doubted that parties wishing to avail themselves of the Act will find com- plaisant clergy to oblige them. There will be certain fashionable London and provin- cial churches where it will be known that no difficulties will be raised; and, having regard to the avowed intention of various Broad Church r'ignitaries and to the viewB known to be entertained in^ very high quarters, we must fear that unions between a man and the sister of his wife aJt such and such a cathedral, at the Abbey, or at t.he Chapel Royal, will appear hereafter among tho items of smart society intelligence. And then will follow the excommunications expli- citly provided for by the Deceased Wifes Sister Bill of 1903, as introduced and read a second time by a Conservative House of Com- mons. Mr. Vaniman is the only member of the Wellman expedition who has rea-ened this country. Re is one i of the three who formed part of the crew of the airship America during her recent 1 attempt to reach the North Pole, the first 1 airship journey that has ever been made in the Arctic. i Mr. iielrin Vaniman remarked: "The mental strain which has been placed upon all of us lately ha*= been very great, and has told more or less heavily upon all of us. ( We knew that we ought to start from our i base at Spitzbergen Polewards between July: 15 and August 20. Every man went to hie Post, the final trial of motors was made, and the America, with the Stars and Stripes Dying at her stern, emerged from her home, a perfect air machine. A few minutes later Mr. vvellman (who was to command the air- ship), Mr. Riesenberg (who was responsible for the compasses and navigation), and myself (who was in the charge-room) bade farewell to onr friends and went aboard, the America meanwhile being held to earth by means of ropes controlled by 40 men. Once on board we immediately repaired to our various stations. The chief went forward to his place on the deck of the airship- Vr Riesenberg took up his position a little aft on the bridge at the wheel and compass; while I went into the interior of the carl and took control of the motors. After swinging for the compass, the navigator reported all in readiness, and a steel cable was passed down to the steamer Express, which was to tow us clear of the land MOTORS AT FULL SPEED. "Immediately afterwards, amid absolnte silence, for special orders had been given that no one was to speak except the officer in command, the Express slowly moved off, and towed as round the headland into the unknown. As soon as the ship was clear, I took the opportunity to start the motors for the first time in the air. As there was imminent peril of these jerks wrenching the airship from the oar, a hurried consultation was held, and orders were signalled by flag to the Express, 250ft. below, to cast us off. This order was at once carried out, and the America ran free, her guide rope trailing in the water. For the first time in mid-air I set the motors act full speed. The America a.t onoe responded, and in a few minutes the Express was out of sigtit. Some twenty minutes later, looking through the starboard window of the engine-room, I eaw that we were, apparently, drifting upon a perpendicular i mountain, and mailed that ou r first fight with the wind had begun. The motors, which had bee-n slackly slowed down, were again given full power, and I was delighted to 800 the America clear from the land and steer towards the open. As soon as we lost sight of the dangerous headland the motors were agaan slowed down to 900 revolutions per minute, and for another fifteen minutes our voyage was continued under perfect con- ditions. DRIFTING UPON LAND. "Looking wt of the opposite window of the engine-room, I was astounded to see that we were drifting upon la.nd in that direction. It was clear that something was wrong, and I hurriedly left the motors, and, going to the bridge, wnere I found Mr. Wellman and Mr. Riesenberg, asked what was the matter. They then informed me that they had just discovered fch-aA the compass was not work- ing properly, and they had not the remotest idea of their bearings. The only oourse was to endeavour to again get into commianioa- tion with the Express, but where was she? iog and snow were impenetrable. Luckily, a few minutes afterwards the weather lifted somewhat, and we saw oar litU-e steamer somewhere about a mile off. Mr. Wellman now told me that the ship (had made two complete turns against the wind. Again the fog closed in, the Express once more vanished from our view, the wind again freshened, our ship blew ronmi, and we were utterly ignorant as to onr course. We all now realised that both ship and our- selves were in imminent danger. We knew that we were surrounded by high mountains hidden away from us in the mist, and we were oJso aware that we were drifting rapidly on to a glacier. Our motors were instantly stopped, our anchor, haaging from the keel of the airs-hip, was let go, and we prepared to make a landing. The emergency valve was opened, a.nd the balloon began to settle. Twice we touched the glacier slightly, with no other shook tha.n a gentle re-bound. Meanwhile the cutting knife was unlashed and run up to the side of the balloon. As the America approached the glacier for the third time an incision, deflating the balloon, was made. With a mighty groan the gas escaped, while the envelope fell gracefully and clear of the airship itself, leaving the three ot U&t standing on her deck An examination of charts led us to believe we were somewhere in the neighbour, hoed of Foul Bay, and our instruments indicated that we had been in the a.ir for two and a quarter hours. The storm abatea eomewhat after this, and the Express hon in sight, and steamed up to the face of th6 glacier. Roped together, our reecuersclimbed up and picked their way across the glacier to where our airehip was resting. The salvage operations lasted two days, at the end of which time the Express, which had returned to headquarters to inform our steamer Frithjof of our whereabouts, had returned, and we with our airehip embarked on the Frithjof for our headquarters. The airship was practically undamaged." FULL OF CONFIDENCE. In conclusion, Mr. Vaniman said:—"What- ever critics may say, and there seem to be many who know more about this affair than we do, our experiences have proved to our satisfaction that we have an airship which i3 capable of making a journey to the Pole and back again, given normal weather con- ditions. Of course, we all feel keenly that we have had to return without accomplish- ing the whole of our object, but even our critics must admit that we have done our best, that we are sincere, c.nd that we are not afraid to trust our lives in the airship which we have built. Our faith iu our air- ship and our project remains not only unshaken, but stronger than ever. I sin- cerely trust that nothing will occur to prevent my having the honour of being a member of the crew of the America on her next voyage to the Pole.'

ARCTIC EXPLORERS SAFE. BRUCE EXPEDITION ARRIVES AT TROMSO, ALL WELL. A Troinso telegram, dated Sunday, stages: -The Scottish Arctic Expedition, under Dr. Bruce, has arrived here all well. The expe- dition arrived in the sloop Backe and was five days sailing from Prince Charles Island. Important results were obtained in difficult, but not dangerous, conditions of weather and travelling. Dr. Bsruce's companion, M. Hjalmer JoKaneen, will stay at Spitzbergen for the winter, together with Herr Lerner. Dr. Bruce and M. Johansen had a station on the west coast, the camp being on Prince Charles Fore- land, which they left one hour before Herr Lerner arrived. The vernal which brought Dr. Bmoo to Tromso arrived at Prince Chairles Foreland on September 4 and waited several days for Dr. Brace a.nd M. Johanean. As the latter did not appear, a search party was eemt out, and they were discovered. Dr. Brace was very exhausted, but has com- pletely recovered. His equipment, weighing 3,000 kilos, was carried across the foreland, the provisions being left behind. The foreland is now almost completely charted. The weather is very stormy.—Reuter.

golden yellow fruit that can be depended on to ha.ve the beet of flavour and the longest keeping qualities; indeed, all the belongings of a perfect grape, and it is ample sunshine that contributes more to this than anything else, as grapes are fruits of the sunshine. All that are now deficient of ripeness and high colour should receive extra attention. Remove all the small leaves and twigs to admit more air and light to the bunches. Open the ventilators wide on fine days, and keep the temperature at night up to 65 or 70 degrees by fire heat. Do not give any more water to the roots, and keep the atmosphere as dry as possible. GRAPES IN UNHEATED HOUSES. These require epocdal care, as it is only the pun heat that cam assist them. Itemove all materials that prevent the sun from shining direct on the bunches. Keep the atmosphere as dry as pœsiMe, and shut ilie oouøe Ulp early in the afternooai. This may be done at three p.m. on bright days to run the temperature up to 80 degrees, if possible, and only give a little top ventilation during the day, and keep th-emi warm, as it is heat they require to complete them. PUMPKINS AND VEGETABLE MARROWS. Pumpkin pie was a more f2.yourite diM in olden times than a.t present, but tiiey are still as good as over, and highly accep-1 table to a.11 fond of old-fashioned fare. All who have grown pumpkins this season and have large, well-grown fruits should cut them before touched by frost, and ha.ng them up to dry in bags in the kitchen. They will then be ready for pumpkin pie in win- ter, and will be found good substitutes for fruit. Although vegetable marrows are ma-de into jam of a mctst a.greea-bl-e kind, they do not come in for tart-making, but they, too, may be cut now, a.nd stored like the pumpkins, to be kept and cooked as a winter vegetable. Do not allow them to be the leaet frested, and cut before they have become horny in the skin from old age, but not too green. EIIUBARB ROOTS. Do not forget the rhubarb. Its aoceptable- n; tss in spring causes many anxious inquiries then, but it requires attention at other times. At present the leaves have drooped and withered. They rest on the surface and sthade the crowns of the roots. This is objectionable. They should have all the sun- shine and air possible. Remove all the leaves a.t once, and lightly fork the soil over and around. Do not eover with dung yet, but let. all remain exposed. YELLOW AUTUMN FLOWERS. Golden is the autumn hue. It is the season- able colour in the cornfields, woodlands, and the garden. The leaves of a.ll deciduous; trees aeeume yellow tints as a first indica- ation of the close of their season, and as showing a peculiar appropriateness there are many plants whicn\produce a great pro- fusion of yellow floweite in the autumn. These are now prominent, and their richness is both excessive and attractive. It is amongst hardy herbaceous plants that the yellow flowers are most observable at this time, and while many of their predecessors are departed, they are now in all their gor- geous glory. As seen in groups, rows, or, indeed, single plants, the Helia-nthus, or sun- flower, inultiflorus (single) and Plenus, the Helemium or Sneezeworts autumna-Ie and Pumilum inula hirta, and the reep-lendent Rudbockia newmanii are a.ll first class, and all should have them. in their garden, whether it be a cottage plot or the elabo- rate attachment of a mansion. They are all most hardy a-nd accommodating, easily transplanted, free of growth, and invariable in flow-cring. They are also valuable as cut- flowers where a great display is desared, and for church decorations they are exceed- ingly well adapted. PARSLEY IN POTS FOR WINTER. A supply of parsley is always appreciated in winter. Su-pplies rarely warrant its use so freely as in summer, but a little bit now and aga.in for flavouring and garnishing is much sought after. To buy it in winter is an expensive affair, and all should try to possess a stock. In a mild winter the plants that are well furnished with young leaves now will continue to be useful, but when severe weather occurs it shrinks greatly, and then fails OT becomes very scarce. This is a general experience, and to make quite sure of having a constant supply a number of plants should be planted in pots now. Lift them with balls of soil at the roots. Slip them easily into pots that have been previously drained, a.nd make the soil firm about them. Put a little soot wit.h the Foil. Water them well, and stand them in a shady spot out of doors. Keep them there for a week OT more; then. expose them to the sun- shine, and let them remain out till Novem- ber. They can then be in a. oodd fra-me or a comer of the grlaas-hoTise, or, izbd-eied, in the wimdow; but do not keep them clcee or warm, as they will grow and remain green in a cool atmosphere. TUBEROUS BEGONIAS IN POTS. Th<m> have been moist gay for months, but their season is ending, and the main con- cern now is to get the bulbs safe aad sound for another year. Those now possessed will, no doubt, be the most ch-odoe, and they oajn be kept on fronn year to year, which eaves mu-oh expense and trash. Do DQt insist :i n treating them as flowering plants eo long as a bloom remains, but regard them 8R3 over now, and make for drying thean off. If the weather is dry and fine, place them out of doors in the sain. Gradually with- hold waiter from. the roots, and when the lea.ves have all gone dry them off wholly. If the weather is objectiona.ble dry them off ■urwk'r glass. Keep them well up in the light and .air in doing so, and when leafless ikit the pots containing the bulbs down unider the stage in the greenhouse or in a dry shod, and lay them on their sides. SAVING ASPARAGUS SEED. Asparagus seed is so cheap to buy by the ounce or pound that very few save their own seed, but there are advantages in doing so. In looking through asparagus beds it will be noticed that some plants are much more robust than others. The Mit-eme a.re tall a.nd exceedingly thick, amd these are the best types to breed from to secure greater weight, quantity, a.nd quality. I know of more than one amateur's garden where the asparagus is unique in these paints, and it is readily traceable to the saving of seed from the con- spictuousJy superior plants. The berries should now be gathered from such. Be most careful not to include ordillilJry samples, brut only from the tallest and thickest that stand out as uncommon. Spread the berries out in a tray to dry, and remove the eeed from them later. SELLING WINTER EGGS. It is generally admitted that summer eggs are very profitless. When sold at 16, 18, or 20 a shilling, as many a.re in rural districts, it is impossible that they can pay to any extent, and as I pointed out in the season when prices were so low, it is best to pre- serve thean then for winter use, for winter eggs rure a. more valuable possession. Then prices are altogether different and very much batter. Rage pay at one penny eaob. Were they never below this pouJtry-keepens would make more money than they do, but winter prices are extremely acceptable. At ten, oigiht, and six a shilling they leave a good margin in fa.vour of the producer, and from Ootober till March these prices ought to be secured readily. PLANTING HARDY FLOWERS. All who have-reared, plants from seed of wallflowers, eweot Williams, pnmroses, forget- me-nots, polyanthus, Ac., should transfer them to their flowering quarters as soon as possible. This is often left undone till November, but it is late then, and the plants do not settle in their now positions at that time as they do now, for if planted at present they will root and become somewhat estab- lisbed before winter; then tlhciT suoocfjg is assured for a fine spring display. Where Rummer flowering plants still occupy the bods and should not be removed till they decay, planting their successors will not be done yet; but where there are vacant positions do not delay longer, bnit plant all the spring flowers possible at once. If they have been reared a.t home from seed OT cuttings so much the better, but if to buy in see to eecuring them oarly. MISTAKEN MUSHROOMS. The recent lamentable deaths from eating poisonous fungi in mistake for mushrooms in Suffolk will make many very careful as to what they pick up and eat as mushrooms. There are several eatable kinds of fungi beside the mushroom, but it requires an expert to detect or select thean, and the public generally will do wisely to avoid all but the true mudh-room. This grows in the fields and on sanitary land, but rarely in objectionable posabiona, a.nd never on old trees amd decayed rubbish like some kinds of fungi. The true mushroom has a snorwy white top of various sizes, and is like a tea sawcr turned. upside down in form when developed. The under side is a dear pink colour, and it becomes black as it decays. I know of no fungi with a pink underpart like the mushroom, a-nd this is an invariable

of their correctness and I non-pod £ />'nou3 nature. Before they open they I are in the form of a ball-iiike hea/d, and the pink cannot- be seen them. but if opened it can be derteoted. The skin also pools more readily off a mushroom than any ether fungi, a.nd this, too, is a. test of t-hedr fitness for food. Considering how anxicms all are to secure mushrooms, it often &urpris»es me that more mistakes are not m'ade with them, but if those who gather thean are ignorant of their distinguishing features, all who cook them should look very closely as to what they are doing. ROSE SOUVENIR DE LA MALMAISON. This rose is always conspicuously fine in the late autumn, and merits culture on this account. It is the most free-flowering of all late roses. It is a froe grower, and may be kept in bush form or troaited as a climber. It succor-ds better in an east or west aspect than most rosos, and is reliable in partially- e'.ha-d-cd positions. The flowers come in huge clusters, and are large, sweet, and of a sal- mon colour. SAVING OLD GERANIUMS. Geraniums to put in the flower-beds are never very cheap plan.ts to buy in early s'um- mer. Many are now anxious to save the old plants and keep them for another year. This is a- -good -thing to do, as they are not very difficult ''to keep during the winter, aDd fill up -well the following year. Be sure to dig up the plants befcre they are in anyway injured by frost. This is bialf the battle 111 keeping them sound. Plant them in gro-uips in p-Qlt3 or box-cs. They will not grow now, and are only stored, and much space is not needed. Cut the longest roots back to make thorn more compact. 'l'he pelts or boxes should be -drained, and use a Earcly, lignt c) Ai to put at the roots. Make it very firm, eoak as soon as planted, and keep them in the open-air and fully exposed to the saa^tiill frost or much wet occurs. Sunshine hardens them most beneficially. Do not cut the tops off, but the largri-t leaves may be removed. If there is a greenhouse, place them in this. They will also do in a frame, or they may be placed in the kitchen or other window. Keep them constantly an the light, a.nd always away from frost. A damp atmosphere must also be avoided. THE LAST OF THE KIDNEY BEANS, Although kidney bctwis were very late in beginning to pod this season, all had atmple in SepfcemSber, and they wall continue till frost occurs, bat they are the first to be nipped, amd a degree or two will bring them to a full-stop. The leaves shrink, and the pods become soft and pulpy; then they arc of no further use. This may hot occur any night, and all who are picMing the pods for winter should keep them wry olceely gathered now, ae it is most desirable to get ae many as possible stored for winter use. If my previous advice was followed, there will be no too old pode on tihe plamte, as aa wiU have been gathered, but at the end the very amaJleet may be included, and have no waste. It is almost impceeible to have too many stored for winter use, but the time is limited to do that now.
