Detective-Sergeant Oii-t arrested the pri- souer with the cheque l'or 10s on him, and also a letter from Mrs Humphry Ward, expressing her sympathy and enclosing postal-order for 9s 6d. Inquiries showed that there was no foundation for the prisoner's story, and he re- fused to give any account of himself. Mr Cecil Chapmau observed that it was a very bad ease, and .sentenced the prisoner to three months' hard labour.
OLD LADY'S WILL. /
OLD LADY'S WILL. Said to Have Had Delusions. In the Probate Division on Tuesday, before Mr Justice Bargrave Dcaiie and a jury, further progress was made with the hearing of the action concerning the estate, valued at about JE600. of Mrs Mary Harris, of Plough-road, Hothcrhithe. The plaintiff, Mr William John Harris, her son. propounded a. will made by tier on August '28th. 1906. under which he was residuary legatee and chief beneficiary. An elder brother and cither relatives, the defendants, asserted that the document was not, legally executed, as Mrs Harris was of unsound mind at the time. They said that the old lady, from the time she lost her husband, who died in 1901 from the effects of an accident, had softening of the brain and delusions..Some of her eccentrici- ties, it was stated, were that she thought she had been up in a balloon and seen the King declared her daughter's funeral was a pleasant picnic; took live coals off the lire and placed them in her lap regarded her relatives as strangers and vice versa; spoke of her hus- band a,s being her father, and walked out into the street in nkrht attire during broad day- light. Giving evidence. Mrs Frances Low, a, former neighbour of Mrs Harris, declared that that lady was always peculiar." When the witness first, went to live next door Mrs Harris told her four times in one day how her husband met his death. Cross -examined, the witness said when she saw Mrs Harris not property attired it was a very hot summer day. Other witnesses swore that they saw Mrs Harris doing eccentric things, I Once she was surrounded by a crowd of children, whom she accused of having robbed her. Other children called her the old mad woman." The hearing was adjourned.

WRONG DIAGNOSIS. At Hampstead onTuesdav an inquest was heid by Mr Schroe-der on Mr Henry Charles Danfc- ziger (77), a .gentleman of independent means. A constable found Mr Danty.igrr lying help- less on his back iu an underground lavatory in Belsize-road on Friday evening. A doctor who was called said he was 'suffering from the effects of drink, and ordered him to he taken home, He however, taken on an ambu- lance to the Wtsst Hampstead Police Station, where he refused to give his name. The police surgeon also decided that Mr Dantziger was suffering from drink. During the night he became worse, and after being in a cell about nine hours was removed to the Hampstead Workhouse Infirmary, where he died on Sunday. A post-mortem examina- tiofl showed that, death was due to a fractured skull, caused probably by a fall down the lava- tory steps. It was stated that, Mr Dantziger was a man of considerable culture, a clever artist and a good musician. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidenbl death," and added that Mr Dantziger was not suffering from alcoholism.

The Lord Mayor having been appointed chairman of the Parliamentary Committee. Alderman John fetiking. who was pro- posed for the deputy-chairmanship, said he wished to resign his membership of that com- mittee, as he could not consistently continue to hold it. He complained that when, at, the request of the Lord Mavor, who was busy over the King s visit- a.t the time, he went specially to London in connection with a Bill, the smail amount he charged for expenses was ques- tioned. He particularly resented the matter being discussed in his absence, and said he had not since put in a bill of expenses. He added that it was not all honey- as .som^ members seemed to think, be ing in Ix>ndon iu connection with Parliamentary Bills. Councillor Cha,ppell urged the alderman to reconsider his decision, and said the usual compliment they got for hard work was kicks. Alderman Trounce and Sir Wm. Grossman also asked the alderman not to resign, Sit- \Vm. Crossrnan remarking that when a' tuan only charged what he was legally entitled to it was a bit low to question it. Councillor Richards, as one who had criticised the expenses, disagreed with Sir William Grossman thai, his action was a bit low. He was still pre- pared to .stand by the opiniou lie then ex- pressed. What, he said was that Alderman Jerkins was already in the House of Com- mons, where his duty as member for Chatham called him, and being there already he ought not to have charged the train fare back and forward from Cardiff. neither ought he to have charged the guinea a day expenses, seeing he would have spent the same amount whether lie was there on committee work or not. He could not agree that the work in the House of Commons promoting Bills wa.s unpleasant. The wire pulling that went on' to get on the Parliamentary Committee or a sub-committee of it was suffi- cient evidence of that. At the same time he would say it was not remunerative work, for he had one experience of it. In conclusion, he congratulated Ald. Jenkins on the high moral stand he had tnken in resigning his member- ship of the committee, and said he admired him for it. He could do more good for Cardiff in au independent position as M.P. than in a dual capacity. He hoped therefore the alder- man would adhere to his decision, notwith- standing the appeal of his fellow-aldermen. He felt sure t he city could rely on the good offices of Alderman Jenkins whenever they were required. (Applause.) Aid. Jenkins pointed out. in reply, that he was on holiday in Cardiff at the time he was asked to go up to London in connection with the Bills, and under those circumstances he thought it, wa-sglaritiglv unjust to question the small amount he charged as expeuses. Had Councillor Richards been in his position, lie would have taifen his 63 8d. (Laughter. ) The alderman emphasised that he spent from hall -past 10 in the morning till 3 in the afternoon in connection with the Bills, and that his Parliamentary duties did not begin till the House opened at 3 p.m. Had he made a charge for 22 days there might have been something in the complaint, but he did not- heor-ilveiiarged for a few days. I n conclusion he said he believed it to be his duty to resign from the committee at the same time he should continue in all matters to do his level I best, for the city of his adoption. (Applause. ) I Alderman Lewis Morgan regretted Alder- I man Jenkins's decision, and moved that Coun- cillor 8tanlield be deputy chairman of the committee. Alderman Jenkins seconded, and it was agreed to.

Police-constable 2'¿O L said that he was told the deceased man had his leather apron over his head when found. The apron was not tied round his waist as usual. Dr. G. N. Captain Long Sims, formerly lessee of the Palace Theatre, Colchester, applied onTuesday for hisdischargef xmi bankruptcy at Colchester County Court, forwarding an affidavit that lie was living in a small cottage in a distant county and could not afford the 30s for a re- turn tickcd to Colchester. Judge Tindal Atkinson observed that the liabilities were £ 1,600. and the only asset a bad debt for £ 25. The unfortunate creditors would never get a farthing. The Official Receiver said the debtor had brought about his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation, and in spite of the fact nothing had been paid the unsecured creditors, the debtor had been legally represented throughout the proceedings. The debtor's solicitor (Mr Jones) said he had made no charge whatever for his services. His Honour suspended the debtor's discharge for five years. ->

Leaker was too ill to appear before the magistrate, and was detained at Rotherhithe Infirmary. It was "stated that the prisoners tried to get engaged as cattlemen on the ship on her home- ward voyage, and finding there were no vacan- cies they concealed themselves between decks. Four days after the ship left l'tlontreal they were discovered, and they were told that if they worked for their food they might not be severely punished, although it was necessary to prosecute them. Their behaviour on the! voyage was all that could be desired. Mr Cecil Chapman ordered Thompson to pay i. fine of 10s, with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment.
