Portugese Unrest. GROUNDLESS STATEMENTS. The Press Association learns on the highest authority that there is not the slightest founda- tion for the sensational stories published in regard to the state of alleged disorder in and also in regard to certain doing3 ascribed to the Crown Prince. The stories are authoritatt. civ declared to be pure inven- tions, in proof of which t is assc tied that the Crown Prince is now il Litstnv.' and has never left the capital. It is understood that the British Foreign Office, which is ably served by its Minimi in Lisbon, was astounded at seeing. the reports in question, having received no intormation from the British Legation in Lisbon which would indicate the sl.ghtest foundation for them. Order is declared to prevail in the capital, and the reports in question are attributed to a deliberate campaign of falsehood and mis- representation, directed against the Royal House, the Government, and the national insti- tutions. Seeing that the whereabouts of the Crown Prince could be so easily ascertained and verified the stories to his banishment from the Court are officially regarded as particularly malicious and unjustifiable, and it is remarked as significant that .certain English journals, presumed to be aware of the actual state of affairs, gave no currency to the rumours. The Queen of Portugal, who is now staying in London, has made not the slightest change in her plan-. She orginailv intended to leave for Portugal on the28th,and will adhere to that arrangement.

Rain of Shrapnel. SLAUGHTER OF TRIBESMEN. Lalla Marnia, Monday.—The fighting be- tween the Ujda column and the Beni Snassen began at 5 in the morning on the frontier. The Beni Snassen, who num- bered about 10,000 men, made a sharp assault on the French camp, but Colonel Felineau, the French commander, had foreseen their inten- tion, and had taken up his position accord- ingly. Fighting was very fierce. At one time 9 the Spahis, under Major Coslet. were obliged to charge in order to prevent the infantry from being surrounded. The charge wa, de- livered in brilliant fashion, but Lieutenant Roze and four Spahis were killed, and Sur- geon-Major Pinaon and twelve Spahis wounded. The suns were being fired as auickly as they could be loaded, and they rained shrapnell on the Beni Snassen, who were eventually driven back by the withering fire. The engagement finished at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The troops behaved splendidly throughout. The Beni Snassen lost about twelve hundred killed. A detachment of troops is patrolling the country. —Reut er. Lalla Marnia, Tuesday.—The column which has been operating in the Wed Zarah Valley returned this morning, worn out. In the course of its movements several villages were bom- barded.-Reuter.

GERMANY AND BRITAIN. Remarkable Trade Figures. Berlin, Tuesday.—Some very striking ex- planatory statistics respecting the trade be- tween the British and German Empires have been issued In connection with a Bill to be in- troduced into the Reichstag this week to re- new the provisional agreement which expires at the end of this year, whereby Germany con- cedes to Great Britain and her Colonies the most-favoured nation clause. These figures show that during 1906 the total value of the goods exported to Germany by Great. Britain and her Colonies amounted to the enormous sum of 1:74,000,000, Great Bri- tain alone sending goods to the value of nearly £41.250,000. On the other hand, Germany's exports to Great Britain and the Coiottrfs amounted to £ 66,300,000, the value of her exports to Great Britaiu alone being over £ 53,250,000. The total A rigid-German trade for 1906 shows an increase of 7 per cent. compared with the previous yeir.-Central News.

THE ROYAL DOCKYARDS. increase of Pay for Ski lied- Labourers. The Admiralty have conceded an advance of pay to skilled labourers in the Department of Works at all the Royal Uttckyards. Twelve months agji an a vanee or Is per week was sanctioned to all labourers, both skilled and ordinary, in all! other departments of the dockyards except that named. This involved the increase oil the pay of ordinary labourers from 20s to 21s per week, and the increase of the minimum pay of skilled labourers from 21s to 2 s per week. About three months ago a similar advance was ordered in the pay of ordinary labourers in the Works Department and now it • is directed that skilled labourers in the same department are also to-receive it, those on the Bummum iu all case*. and, others if circumstances permit.

DENTAL SUCCESS. At the examinations hddwt week in Lon- don, Mr Charles R. M. Peaty, son of Mr Charles F. Peatty. DEVIL'S ISLAND. Escape of Prisoners. REARREST OF REFUGEES. Georgetown (British Guiana), Nov. 5.—A good deal of excitement has been caused among the people living on the Lssequebo coast of British Guinan by the conduct of eight escaped prisoners from the French penal settlement at Cayenne, better known as Devil's Island," of Dreyfus fame. Having made their escape from the settle- ment, the refugees arrived off the coast of Essequebo on November 3rd, utterly withoout food, and in a boat that was rapidly sinking. Evidently realising that they could go no further, they made for the shore, which, after a strenuous struggle, they reached in a fatigued and exhausted condition. Their appearance was by no means welcomed by the people on the coast. The Frenchmen were absolutely without provisions, or moans to purchase food, but, rendered desperate by hunger, being, as they were, on the point of starvation, they hung round the shops and, houses in the township of Anna Regina in a way that greatly alarmed the inhabitants,and acts of violence were momentarily feared. Fortu- nately, a strong body of police were in the neighbourhood, and, arriving on the scene, took the refugees into custody, subsequently releasing them, but on the understanding that they would at once leave the colony. The Frenchmen failed, however, to keep their i promise, and next day their attitude became more threatening, and they were again taken into custody and sent under a small escort to the county gaol at Suddie. All went well until the party arrived at a desolate part of the road, when the French- men attacked their guard, overpowered them, and made their escape into the'dense bush. An alarm was carried back to Anna Regina, and a force of police and villagers set out in the tracks of the escaped prisoners. For some time the efforts of the searchers proved un- availing. and no trace of the men could be found. Owing, however, to the close watch that was kept in the vicinity of all houses, the refugees were unable to obtain food, and, overcome by hunger, they were arrested in twos and threes, exhausted and in a very low state, and taken into safe custody. In due course they will be handed over to the French authorities. Of late the arrival in British Guiana of es- caped prisoners from Devil's Island has be- come more and more common, and it was only a few days previous to this that another party arrived. So long5 however, as they are quiet and well-behaved, no objection is taken, and if they are so disposed they can invariably find plenty of employment in the rice fields. In the meantime, the French authorities show little concern in the matter, and as a'rule ap- pear far from anxious to receive the refugees back again.—Press Association Special.

PRETENDER ROUTED. 100 Killed and Wounded. Paris, Sunday.—A telegram from Rabat, which was received to-day in Paris, gives some details of a fight which took place south of Mogador between troops of Kaid Anfloo's rein- forced by some troops sent from Mogador and Mulai Hafid's mahalla, the latter, on its depar- ture from Marakesh, being about 1.600 men strong. Mulai Hafid's mahalla was defeated, and had 67 men killed and 35 wounded. It also left on the field a large number of beasts of burden and 200 rifles. The losses of the Shereefian troops were three killed and 10 wounded. The vanquished rebels rallied at Itallil. They were not pursued, as the Imperial force was not sufficient, and was loaded with plunder.—Reuter. Tangier, Sunday.—A wireless telegram announces the landing of the Shereefian force sent to occupy Mazagan without having to fire a shot —Reuter. French Soldiers in a Fight. Oran, Saturday.-The detachment advancing against the Beni Snassen tribe from Ad- gcroud Mkiss, near Portsay, was attacked in the Mkiss gorges by a strong body of the tribesmen at 8 o'clock this morning. Fight- ing lasted until noon, when 'the Moors re- tired. be ng unable to withstand the French artillery fire. The French loss was six men wounded. The detachment, which captured many head of cattle, camped on the scene of the fight.-Reuter.

FRENCH FORCE DRIVEN BACK. Paris. Wednesday.—The reconnoitring party under Captain Petrement which has been operating against the Moors on the Algerian frontier was attacked on its way back to camp by a force of Moors about 2,000 strong. In consequence of its numerical inferiority, the French column, which was composed of only 300 men, was obliged to return to Al- gerian territory. In the course of the engagement a tirailleur was severely wounded and seven Goumiers (or caravan guards) were also hurt, three of them more or less seriously. Lieutenant Maire-Sebille, who was reported as having disappeared in the fight near Ujda, on Sunday, because when last seen he was sur- rounded by Moors, has returned to Ujda, hav- ing succeeded in getting away unscathed. Port Say, near the Algerian frontier, is pre- paring for an attack, and requests for re- inforcements have been received from different places on the coast. A number of tribesmen who were at first neutral have n'w decided to join the Beni Snassen tribe, which has been fighting the French. The situation is becoming critical, and if reinforcements are not sent immediately the French troops may be overwhelmed by force of numbers. Great alarm prevails among Europeans and natives all along the Algerian frontier from tbe mountains to the sea. Further operations against the Beni Snassen have been decided upon between the Sultan and France. -Reiiter. French Town Threatened. Paris, Wednesday Evening.—The general officer commanding the Oran Division has noti- fied the Ministry of War that he has just received a telegram from Memsurs, an import- ant town in the vicinity of the frontier, in- forming him of the appearance of a strong Moorish column advancing towards the town. The Mayor has asked for troops, which have been promptly despatched.-Reuter. Frontier Crossed House Burnt. Paris, Wednesday.—The Governor of Algeria telegraphed to the Premier to-day that about 200 Moorish, tribesmen yesterday raided the Algerian frontier north of Menassebkiss. They burnt down a house, crossed the Kiss, and entered French territory, and burning some stacks of straw the marauders returned to Agbal at about half-past 5 in the evening. Measures have been taken to prevent a recur- rence of the raid.—Reuter. Sultan's Troops Defeated. Tangier, Wednesday.—The latest advices from Rabat state hat the Sultan's troops, under the command of the famois Bushta Bagdadi. attacked the Shawia tribe, and after a battle lasting the whole day sustained a severe defeat with heavy losses. The victori- ous tribesmen also suffered severely. El Bag- dadi has been obliged to retire to the Kusbah of Skhiral, where he will await reinforcements. Great numbers of wounded troops are being brought into Rabat. It is understood that the release of kaid Sir H. Maclean is now only a matter of a few days, as Raisuli has agreed to the terms proposed.— Reuter.

Dear Food in Germany. STATEMENT IN THE REICHSTAG Improved Standard of Living. Berlin, Monday. Replying to an inter- pellation by the Social Democrats in the Reichstag to-day as to what the Government intended to do towards reducing the high prices of food. Dr. Von Bethrnanu Hollweg, Secretary of State for the Interior, said that in consequence of the intense activity of in- dustry and the deficiency of labour wages had gone up, and still tended to go up, thus bring- ing about a larger demand for provisions. The standard of living in large sections of the population had improved, and the consump- tion of meat had reached the hi-zh average of England. On the other hand the prosperity of agriculture had been impaired by the defi- ciency of labour and the higher cost of pro- duction. Owinz to these causes, and to inter- national factors and the universal bad harvests, the prices of provisions and grain had substantially increased. Abroad the rise in prices per cent. had been much higher than in Germany. The present situation was not a critical one dor the German people. They would holl fast to their, economic policy, which had given them economic stability both as regards industry and agriculture. (Hear, hear.) The price of provisions wou!d go down. Now. when Germany had passed the apogee of her industrial orbit, was just the time to strive for a strengthening of the home market. (Hear, hear.) The suspension of the corn duties would only be to the advantage of speculators and middlemen. Reuter.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT. Baseless Rumours Exposed. Router's special corrcsponden with the German Emperpor at Highclifte was on Tues- day received at the Castle by Surgeon-General Dr. Ilberg, the Emperor's body physician. Discussing recent statements in the Press concerning his Majesty's health, Dr. Ilberg sa. id, Y on are doubtless aware that it is not usual for doctors publicly to discuss such matters, but statements which have appeared in some English papers are of such-a baseless character that it is easy to deny them. In the first place I may assure you that there is not the slightest residuum of the old trouble in his Majesty's larynx. Secondly, I may add fiat not only in this respect, but in all others, the Emperor is in perfect health and in the best of spirits. It. has been stated that as a result of his Majesty's rest an operation has been averted. This is a baseless rumour. No operation is necessary, and to this extent the report is true but there has never been any question of an operation. The papers also declare that I have had consultations with Sir Felix Semon, Sir Francis Laking, and other eminent doctors concerning the Emperor, and that as a result of one con- sultation at Windsor it was decided that the Emperor should come to the South Coast in order to get into tone for an impending or possibly pending operation. All this is the veriest nonsense, and can only emanate from writers who have been neither to Windsor Castle nor to Highcliffe Castle. There have been no consultations at all. The decision that his Majesty should have a rest on the South Coast at the end of the State visit was made in Berlin, and with regard to an operation or impending operation I have already disposed of this story. I saw Sir Felix Semon at Windsor, but he merely called to show me over the sanatorium there, concerning which he wrote me before I left Berlin. You will thus see that there have been no consultations here, and that the rest his Majesty is taking on the South Coast is not the result of recent developments, but was arranged long a go. The whole simple facts are that some weelis go the Emperor was suffering from catarrh of the upper bronchial tubes with a certain amount of coughing—more like an autumn cold, which is very common with us all. As the Emperor could not get rid of this as quickly as he wished, this rest was decided upon. There you have the plain and complete truth. There was no question of any affec- tions of the ears or throat. The rest has been completely successful, and his Majesty is now quite well."

VISIT TO EARL OF PEMBROKE. Fine weather again prevailed at HighclifFo on Monday, and the German Emperor was out shortly before half-past eleven, when, in the presence of a fan- number of interested spectators, he performed a pleasing little ceremony. Accompanied by Colonel the Hon. E. Stuart Wortley, the Kaiser proceeded to a spot on the lawn near the carriage drive, where an oak sapling was in readiness for planting. The Emperor laughingly stuck his walking stick in the ground, divested himself of his gloves, and the tree being held in position, his Majesty quickly shovelled in some earth. Turning to the daughters of Colonel Stuart Wortley^ he smilingly asked them to finish the work, with which request the young ladies readily complied. The tree is close to those previously planted by King Edward and King Alfonso. Subsequently the Royal motor cars were drawn np, and tha Emperor took his seat in the first car with the German Ambassador and Colonel H. C. Legge, the King's equerry. The cars then proceeded of). a long drive to Wilton House, where the Kaiser took lunch with the Earl of Pembroke. The streets of Salisbury were crowded with people, and hearty cheers were raised as the Royal visitor passeil along. At Wilton the inhabitants assembled in largj numbers near the entrance to Wilton House, and inside the gateway the girls of Lady Pem- broke's school lined the roadway. His Majesty was received by the Earl of Pembroke. Lord and Lady Herbert. Lady Muriel Herbert. Lady Isobel tlrdy and Major Gathorne Hardy. After luncheon th- KaiSer was shown round the house, which contains a priceless collec- tion of statuary and works of art. He subse- quently went into the grounds and planted a cedar tree and inspected the Italian girdens and the centre tower of the mansion. On leaving Wilton House the Emperor made a tour of the little town. and was given a fine reception. His Majesty specially noticed the school children, who had been drawn up to watch his progress, and the speed of his car was reduced to a crawling pace. In reference to certain statements concern- ing the German Emperor's health which have been telegraphed to this country from German newspapers, says the Westminster Gazette," wte are glad to be able to say, on the best authority, that the Emperor has benefited greatly from his stay at Highcliffe, and that the last symptoms of the cold from which lie had suffered have disappeared. He is in the best of spirits and is delighted with the place and the beauties of the surrounding country. The statements in regard to his ear-trouble are, we are assured, unfounded, and there is not now, nor has there been recently, any question o his undergoing an operation. The general state of his health is excellent.

NOBEL PR-IZE WINNER. Professor Sir William Crookes, who has been designated as the winner of the Nobel prize for chemistry, has been engaged in scientific work for about 60 years, and his reputation has be- come international. He entered the Royal College of Chemical Science when he was 17, and before he was 20 he was assistant to Dr Hoffman, the same Hoffman to whom we owe many of the coal-tar dye colours, as well as many brilliant pupils. After an appointment to the meteorological observatory at Oxford, young Crookes turned his attention more and more to pure chemistry. It was while inves- tigating some of. the waste products of the sul- phuric acid that is used in dyeing that he was led to the discovery of the metallic element thallium, and nearly all his later work is the descendant in the direct line of this discovery —which helped to win him the Fellowship of the Royal Society. While determining the Sir William Crookes. I atomic weight of thallium, he made use of a balance which could be manipulated in a vacuum. While working with high vacua he discovered the effect of radiation on small surfaces, and made the first radiometer and while experimenting with these high vacua he made the discoveries respecting the behaviour of highly attenuated gal, which led directly to the construction of the familiar Crookes tube, to the incandescent electric filament lamp, and. indirectly, to the discovery of the X-rays. He has been a vigorous controver- sialist on such subjects as sewage disposal, water purification, and wheat supply, and, by no means last, or least, he has been hon- ourably associated with attempts to discover what truth or falsehbod there may be behind the so-called psychic manifestations. ————————

SPANISH EXPRESS DISASTER. 16 Bodies Recovered. Madrid, Tuesday.—According to a telegram received here, 16 bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the Valencia express.— Reuter. Barcelona, Tuesday.—A number of those injured in the accident to the Valencia ex- press arrived here by train at midnight. The authorities and a detachment of ambulance men were at the station. In one family one son was killed and the mother and daughter injured. These latter were met at the tation by another son. It is stated a passenger was impri. soned in a compartment for two hour with seven corpses. Nothing is known as to the fate of the manager of one of the big banks in Barcelona who travelled by the express.— Reuter. Madrid, Tuesday.—The newspapers state that the bridge which was the scene of the catastrophe was in a bad state of repair, and was being supported by props. Engine drivers had orders to drive carefully over the struc- ture.-Reuter.

JEWS IN JERUSALEM. Mr Israel Zangwillhas received the following cable from the Grand Rabbi of Jerusalem :— Dearness of provisions frightful. Situation of the poor very critical. Future excessively sad. Prompt pecuniary succour indispensable. G ra in and Hour preferable."

--r- Robert B( wen, an engine driver employed at Baldwins Works, Landorc, whilst following his employment on Sunday got caught in a worm spindle feeding furnace. Both legs were severely crushed, and the injured man was taken to the hospital.

New York Explosion. WOMEN AND CHILDREN VICTIMS. SUPPOSED INCENDIARISM. An Exchange New York cablegram, dated Monday, states Thirteen persons have been burned to death and seven injured in a disastrous tenement fire in the city. The out- break is believe i to be the work of incen- diaries." A later message says :—Thirteen bodies have been recovered. One was that of a man, the remaining 12 being women and children. New York, Monday.—Thirteen Italians were killed and many others injured in a fire w'tich occurred early this morning in a tenement house here as the result of an explosion.— Reuter. The dead jn the tenemenf house were found huddled together on the top floor, where they had been overcome while seeking to escape.— Reuter.

Bomb Outrage in Odessa. 4 KILLED, 11 WOUNDED. Odessa, Wednesday Night.—Two policemen and two civilians were killed this evening by an Anarchist bomb, which was thrown close to the Naval College, The bomb, which was charged with pyroxi- line, burst with such a tremendous report that it alarmed the whole city, and thousands of windows were shattered. Immediately after the explosion a man, believed to be the perpetrator of the outrage. was seen running away afc full speed, and a number of policemen and others give chase, firing rifle and revolver shots at him fs they rf,n. The man, however, escaped apparently unhurt, whereas no fewer than 11 other people were wounded by stray bullets. The streets were crowded at the time, and the affair caused the greatest consternation, The bodies of the four men killed by t e explosion were terribly mutilated.—Central News.

Explosion at Whitehaven SERIOUS LOSS OF LIFE. Tw Hundred Men in Peril. A serious explosion occurred on Tuesday at the Whalliam Pit. Whitehaven, resulting in, it is feared, the death of five men and injuries to seven others. The explosion took place in a stone drift a great distance awav from the shaft^and set fire to the drift. There were 11 men in the drift at the time of the explosion, which took place about one o'clock, while the first shift of coal hewers, as well as most of the driftsmen, were preparing to leave work. It had a terrible effect, wrecking part of the drift, overturning tubs and filling the drifts and adjoining ways with dense fumes, which rendered the work of rescue difficult. There were, however, plenty of volunteers, and soon several injured men were brought to the surface. At half-past 5 two dead bodies, those of Witliam Vincent Fitzsimmons, aged 21, single, of Branstv, and Joseph Kennedy, single, of Whitehaven, were brought to the surface. Three other men—Alfred Burns, married, of Branstvn William Hanlon, married, of Whitehaven and James Rowe, married, of WThitehaven—are missing, and it is feared they have also perished. The bodies of Fitzsimmons and Kennedy were found about 200 yards from the seat of the explosion, while Hanlon, Burns, and Rowe were much farther in. Of the seven injured men two were taken to the Infirmary. The fire, it is stated, has been cut off. Another account says shot-firing was pro- ceeding in a stone drift nearly three miles from the shaft, when a terrific explosion took place, carrying destruction and death in its train. There were 11 men in the drift at the time, and it is feared that five of these have perished, whilst all the others have been injured. The news of the explosion rapidly spread, and as there were probably not fewer than 200 men in the pit at the time the utmost conster- nation was felt. Crowds flocked to the pit mouth, and late on Tuesday night many were still waiting' for newrs of the three missing men.

DATE OF EXECUTION. The High Sheriff (Mr W. Rice Evans) has fixed Friday, the 13th December, as the date of the execution of George Stills, now lying in Cardiff Prison under sentence of death for the murder of his mother at Pontycymmer. Stills, who is watched day and night by two supernumerary warders from Man- chester, occupies the same céll as that. allotted Eric Lange, the murderer of Mr Jones, hotel proprietor, Pentre, a few yearsago. He takes daily exercise, occasionally indulges in a smoke, eats and sleeps well, and apparently enjoys good health. In the official prison records he is described as a Nonconfor- mist, and on Sunday last he attended Divine service, which was conducted by the prison chaplain. The condemned man does not appear to realise the awfulness of his position, and up to the present he has not evidenced any contrition for the crime of which he was found guilty by twelve of his countrymen. Indeed, Stills is said to maintain the same defiant demeanour which characterised his attitude during the recital of the terrible story at Glamorganshire Assizes last week, when, on being asked if he had anything to say why sentence of death should not be passed upon him, he heaped a curse upon those witnesses who, he angrily shouted, had committed per- jury in their evidence against him. It is expected that Stills will be visited some time this week by his white-haired father, who, in his effort to save his son from the death penalty, told a pitiable story of the dead woman's iailihgs as mother and wife. The executioners will be the brothers Pierpont, who carried out the death sentence on Mrs Leslie^ James, the baby farmer, a few months ago.

STILLS SEEN BY HIS FATHER. A Petition to be Prepared. On Wednesday afternoon Mr George Stills, the aged father of the condemned man, had an interview with his son at the Cardiff Gaol. The time that the two were together was short, bein? less than 20 minutes. Inter- viewed afterwards by a South Wales Echo reporter, Mr Stills, who presented a very pathetic figure and at times shook mith emo- tion, said his son did not now look half the man he was. He looks bad in the face and paler than at the trial, but his spirit is grand," remarked Mr Stills. The condemned man was at the time Mr Stills called at the gaol out in the exercise yard, but was summoned indoors immedi- ately upon his arrival, and had two warders in attendance upon him the whole time that the interview lasted. When on Friday last-the day after sentence was passed—the father saw him at the prison, the son then begared of him not to brea down, because of the effect it would have on him, and, referring to yester- day's visit, the father said, Thank God, I held up Questioned as to what passed between them, Mr Stills,stated that he told him he intended getting up a petition for his reprieve, and his reply was, Dad, I know you will do your best for me." not the boy's fault," murmured the old man. who seemed for a moment lost in sad contemplation of his son's terrible fate. Did he say anything about the crimc: questioned the interviewer. He said, ■ Dad, I was driven to it. or 1 would have had the knife,' meaning that he would have been stabbed. Continuing, Mr Stilly observed, Isaid to him. 'George, we've mad^ a bad job of it, but I'll go over to the Echo," office, and see what 1 can do there about rite petition. His reply was, I know you will do your best for me you always have done you will never leave me now." The condemned man then inquired when Mr Stills and his brother would visit him again. Mr Stills made no mention to his son about the date of the execution, as he did not know it then. Giving a few particulars about hs unfortunate son, Mr Stills said he was the youngest, and was born at Nottingham, but they hid lived at Pontycymmer 18 or 19 years. When he left home for about two years in consequence of the conditions prevailing at his home he was like a wandering sheep." L0NG-SERVICE~REC0RD. Mr William Underwood, who, has died at Rosemary Homestead, on the Hedingham Castle estate of the Majendie family, has a length of service which probably constitutes a record. South Wales Greetings. LUNCHEON AT CARDIFF. IRISH QUESTION AND THE IRISH PARTY. Mr and Mrs Redmond were entertained at luncheon in the Whitehall Rooms of the Park Hotel. Cardiff, on WednesJay afternoon. Ilr T. P. Martin, who presided over a representa- tive gathering, in submitting the health of Air Redmond, said they all appreciated the grand work he wa. doing. Bishop Hedley, supporting, said they looked upon Mr Redmond as a distinguished poli- Lician, as an orator, patriot, and as an honest man. (Applause.) He was ilu leader of a party -%vb ich was doing its best to undo and reverse that ascendancy which, in evil times gone by, was cast like an evil spirit upon Ireland. (Hear, hear.) There was no greater gift of Providence to a party than an "able leader. (Applause.) The toast was received with enthusiasm, and Mr Redmond was accorded an ovation on rising to reply. He said he knew of no part of Great Britain in which the Irish Nationalist movement received more loyal, more stead- fast, "more valuable support than from South Wales. One of his proudest thoughts was that during the 26 years he had been in Parliament the Irish party had always been on the side of Justice and Liberty in every land, no matter what the conse- quences might appear to be to Ireland for the moment. They did not ask in Ireland for anything inimical to the interests of the Empire. (Hear, hear.) What they asked for was simply the right which had been the bond e of Empire and the cause of the prosperity and greatness of that Empire. There were to-day 26 different portions of the Empiré in the enjoyment of Home Rule. No man would deny that the prosperity and contentment of these portions would have been impossible were it not that Home Rule had been conceded them. All that Ireland asked for was that, without interfering in the smallest degree with the management of British, Scottish, or Welsh affairs, or with the proper conduct of Imperial affairs, thev should-be allowed in their own humble way, in their own little country, to manage for themselves purely Irish affairs. Irishmen had proved, in a ll parts of the world, that they were fitted for the exercise of self-government. (Applause.) Although so long put off from what they should possess, they had proved they could successfully and economically manage local administrative affairs. (Hear, hear.) He was convinced that the day would come in the not distant future when men of all parties and creeds in this country would look back with amazement and wonder to the time when thismoderate demand of the Irish people was refused, just as people now looked back with amazement at the time when Catholic emancipation was refused by all parties. The Day Was Nigh at Hand t, when relaud would be prosperous-at any rate. she would be happy and contented be- cause she would ha ve the working out of her own affairs in her own hands. (Applause.) He submitted to the consideration of Englishmen, Scotsmen, and Welshmen that there was no work so valuable, from their point of view, as the conciliation of Ireland. (Hear, hear.) Sacrifices were made and va.t sums of money expended for th purpose of conciliating the Colonies. All the Colonies put together were not so important to the. Empire as the good- will of Ireland. If they changed Ireland, admittedly disaffected and therefore a source of weakness to the Empire, into a contented and friendly portion of the Empire, they would have done more for the Empire than anything done by warriors and statesmen in the past. (Applause.) The Irish party was engaged in a work which ought to command the sympathy and good-will of the democracy of Great Britain. He believed that if they took a vote of the working classes to-morrow it would be decided by an enormous majority that the moderate de- mand of the Irish people should be granted. (Hear, hear.) It was his policy, and policy of his friends, to bring about such a state of affairs when that vote should be taken. At the Last General Election they were—he would not say cheated, but de- prived, of the advantages of such a vote being taken owing largely to the fact that the Government was formed before the General Election took place, and before the leaders of the party knew how^enormous was the re- action against Toryism. Owing to that fact certain, members of the Government made declarations of a character which prevented a straight vote being taken on Home Rule at the election. It must be the business of the Irish party to prevent that happening again. They must insist upon the question of Home Rule being submitted to the electors. He was convinced that, if submitted, a favourable ver- dict would be returned. (Applause. Y, The Irish cause was the cause not only of political, but of religious liberty, in every land, and so long as Irishmen were in the British House of Commons the voice of Ireland would be heard on the side of religious liberty-on the side of those parents who maintained the right of having their children educated in their own religion. (Applause.) A more monstrous tyranny was never conceived by man than that a section of the people should be com- pelled to go to a school where a religion other than their own was taught. (Applause-) He was Very Confident of the Future of Ireland. He was not discouraged by delays, or disappointments or disillusions. (Hear, hear.) There had been fimes when they were going full speed ahead, but repeatedly there nad been blocks and wrecks on the line,, and it looked as thougn they would never again move towards their uestination. If they nad lost heart when these things occurred they would not only be poor politicians but poor descendants of those men who did not lose courage in the old days when life and liberty and ail that was held dearest to men was sacrificed again and again. (Applause.) The disappointment last year over the Irish Coun- cil Bill was a very bitter one. Personally he thought their hopes were too high, but, as he predicted, the disappointment had had the effect instead of weakening the national move- ment in Ireland of strengthening and solidify- ing it, and it had arroused the enthusiasm of the people more than ever, so that in many ways what was regarded as a misfortune would prove a piece of good fortune for Ireland. The Irish party would appear in the House of Commons with Absolutely United Ranks. There was a saying in Ireland Care for yourselves alone." That had been his guiding principle and policy ever since he entered public life. They could not afford to rely upon the benevolence of any English party. They had the mass of the English people with them. It was impossible to believe that the consumma- tion of their hopes could be long postponed. All they had to do was to show a little common sense, a little steadfastness, that doggedness so characteristic of the British race, and a little determination not to allow small things to divide them while they were united on essential things. If they exhibited these qualities he was convinced that the near future would see the consummation of their hopes, at any rate to the extent of the estab- lishment on Irish soil of a Parliament which would have full control over all Irish affairs. Mr Redmond concluded by saying that the action of Bishop Hedley that afternoon would endear him still more to the people of Ireland, and.,that it was a happy omen that the Ca tholic Irishmen of Cardiff were workng hand iu hand with their revered bishop. (Applause.)

Irish Leader at Merthyr. QRATEFUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT FOR WELSH SUPPORT. Action to be Concentrated on the Demand for Home Rule. Mr John Redmond, M.P., was given a most enthusiastic reception when lie visited his compatriots at Dowlaisand Aterthvi- last night. The Irish leader on a ival atCaeharris station, Dowlais, was met by a number of repro senta- tive Irishmen, and was presented on behalf of the Merthyr branebe-q of the United Irish' League with an illuminated address by Mr Joseph Coghlin, The address bade Mr and Mrs Redmond." CaedmiUe failthe a hun- dred thousand welcomes) on their first visit to South Wales, and concluded with a prayer that as the leader had been with Ireland in her time of stress and trouble God might spare him to witness her day of triumph. Mr Redmond, in acknowledging, said the prayer with which the address concluded had touched him. very much, and.he prayed God to grant that they might all live to see that prayer fulfilled. He did not despair. The canse of Irish liberty was stronger to-day than ever it was receiving more solid and intelligent support amongst the working men of England, Scotland, and Wales than ever it did, and it was to the working men that they had to look for justice for Ireland. The triumph, when it came, would be a triumph fpr justice and for the working-meu, for the old asendancy class that was the enemy of Ireland was also the enemy of the working classes, and that old class had lost its power. As soon as the organised masses of this country understood that they had the power he was convinced that they would have justice in Ireland. (Applause.) Drili Hall Demonstratien. Mrs Redmond was then presented with a bouquet, and Mr and Mrs Redmond, with members of their party, entered carriages, and a. were escorted by a processioit of torch-bearers, headed by the Rhyiimey and Dowlais Irish Band, through the crowded streets to the Drill Hall at Merthyr. Her a -Pry targely-attended meetirg was held under the presidency of Mr John Valentine, of Bristol. Mr D. A. Thomas. M.P.. telegraphed that ill- ness prevented him fror being present, He added that he felt Hon Rule-was certain, and desired every success to the Merthyr demo nstrati on. The Chairman described the meeting as the greatest Irish meeting ever held in the Princi- pality. Mr Joseph Coghlin moved a resolution, de- claring continued adhesion to the United Irish League and unabated confide/icc in the Irish party under Mr Redmond's leadership. Mr John Redmond, on rising to acknowledge the resolution, was received with great cheer- ing. He came. he said, to acknowledge the magnificent support Irishmen. in South Wales had given to the Irish party. He was delighted to have the opportunity of thanking them per- sonally for this support accorded both to the party and to himself. As far as he knew Wales did not return to Parliament at this moment one single man op- posed to Home Rule for Ireland. (Cheers.) His mind went back to the struggle of Ireland during the dark years that were passed, and he acknowledged with profound gratitude that at a time when almost every man's hand was against the Irish party in Parliament they found The Generous Welshmen to stand by their side. (Cheers.) To-dav in that district they were represented by two honest, convinced Home Rulers. Mr D. A. Thomas had long been a Home Ruier, and had ever been consistent, and he (Mr Redmond) regarded their other member, Mr Keir Hardie, as one of the most determined of their friends in the House of Commons or in Great Britain. (Cheers.) Hewa.sglad to have the opportunity, in the name of Ireland, to re urn to the Welsh people and their representative's an expression of their deep gratitude for their unwavering support of the cause of free Ireland. Ireland was forging ahead. They were in a position to-day to say that they bad weathered the storm, thit the tide was on the turn, and for his parthc believed that from now onwards their progress ought to be easy and rapid. In Ireland the Nationalist forces were united. Disappointments, instead of depressing the people had made them still more united, and even the semblance of disunion that, their critics in this country had been able to dis- cover in the past was passing away. (Cheers.) They would go to Parliament To Demand Home Rule. (Cheers.) No doubt the Government would have its programme of Irish Bills, and that programme of remedial measures, if it were satisfactory—as he hoped it would be-would receive from them fairplayayi(I their legitimate support but their duty would be in the next Parliament to make it plain to the Liberal party of to-day, as they had made it plain to other English parties in the past, that no remedial legislation could settle the Irish ques- tion. Mr Birrell had recently put before the world his programme of Irish remedial legislation, the most important, item iu which was the amendment of the Irish Land Laws. The Irish landlords had absolutely blocked the work of the Irish Land Commis- sion in the purchase of untenanted land and in distribution among the people. and they had gone in on the grass land and driven off the cattle of the grazier. This was due to the broken pledges of British Ministers and the disappointment of the Irish people. They were told that the Commission were inquiring into the matter, and that the people should wait. But they could not forget how little they had ever gained by patience, and how much they had gained by determination and agita- tion. (Cheers.) The gaols of Ireland were empty, but if coercion were put into operation to-morrow for every man put into gaol seven men would be ready to take his place. (Cheers.) The agrarian restlessness in Ireland would dis- appear if Mr Birrell and the Governmentintro- duced into Parliament an adequate measure to amend the Land Act of 1903; and to effect the breaking up of ranches 11 compulsory powers vested in the Commission, justifying their proposals by the fact that the landlords had refused to carry out the promises made by Mr Wyndham of the late Tory party. (Cheers.) Mr Redmond went on to appeal to Welsh members to take a broad- minded view of Mr BirrelFs proposals in re- g*d to a new Irish University open to all creeds, and he appealed to Welsh members to support Mr Birrell in his settlement of the Irish University. As regards that, there was no place in Mr Birrell's programrAe for Home Rule for Ireland. He asserted that the Irish party could not enter into any thought or mind an alliance with any English party that did not put Home Rule in the front of their programme: Therefore no matter how valuable Mr Birrell's social reform might be the Irish party would go to Parlia- ment next Session absolutely unfettered, absolutely independent of the Liberal party, standing between the two great English par- ties, allied to neither of them, willing to take from either anything that might be good for Ireland that might be offered. (Cheers.) If the Liberal Government would not raise the question of Home Rule, the Irish party would raise it. The policy of the half way house had failed, had disappeared for ever, and the Liberal party were taking on the old alter- native whether they liked it or not-coercion or Home Rule. He asked the Welsh people to continue their support of the Irish party and to give them the right of self-government—for their own sakes. (Cheers.)

DOGS' HOME. New Quarters at Cardiff. Hitherto the arrangements at Cardiff for receiving dogs as boarders" and those which are lost or straying have been of a somewhat primitive nature, but the Cardiff Society for the Promotion of Kindness to Animals has taken the matter up with earnsestness,with the. result that capital quarters for our dumb friends have been provided in sheds on a portion of the land utilised for stables by the Cardiff Corporation on Sloper-road, between the Grangetown Railway Station and Canton Common. There are eleven comfortable pens for boarders "-animals left by people who are absent from home for holiday and other purposes—and two pens in the yard for waifs and strays which the police encounter on their beats. The former are well cared for on very reasonable terms the latter are allowed eight days in which to be claimed or sold prior to being consigned to the lethal chamber. This chamber, which adjoins the pens of the strays is charged with coal gas, and the condemned animals there pass away peacefully in a few minutes. The society has obtained a 14 years' lease of the land and sheds from the Corporation at a merely nominal charge, and in the making of the arrrangements has had the benefit of the advice and services of the chief constable, Mr W. McKenzie. By next summer it is anticipated that there will be accommodation for about 100 dogs. There is a keeper in attendance throughout the day, an experienced man with dogs, able to attend to all their requirements. The society, for which Mr W. F. Ridgway, of 88, City-road, acts as hon. secretary and manager, i. supported by voluntary contributions, and anyone wishing to support it in its laudable scheme mav do so by becoming a guarantor for as low a suin as 5s. In addition to caring for "boarders" and "strays," and destroying the undesirables, the society makes a point of selling unclaimed animals at a very low charge. Persons in- terested in the society's work arc cordially invited to pay a visit to the Home, which we are sure will commend itself in its general arrangements to all who desire to see dogs well cared for.

COUNCILLORS AS JUDGES. Stormy Scene at Pontypool. A scene occurred at the monthly meeting of the Pon typool District Council on Wednesday. Mr W. H. Hughes pressed for the appointment of an independent judge to award the prizes offered by the Council for the best poultry shown in the Christmas market. Mr Hughes criticised the manner in which the judging was carried out last year. It was, however, decided to again appoint a committee from the Council to do the judging at the forthcoming Christmas market. Mr W. H. Pitten took exception to some of Mr Hughes's remarks, and stated that Mr Hughes fought tooth and nail for awarding one of the poultry prizes to a certain bird when all the others were in favour of granting the prize to another. On going through the market a few minutes after the awar s were made he saw that bird on a stall lvlonging to a relative of Mr Hughes. Mr Hughes protested against this remark, for at the time the judg- ing was proceeding lie was ignorant to whom the bird belonged. He asked for a, withdrawal of the allegation. Mr Pitten Well, you won't get a withdrawal. Mr Hughes Then you are a contemptible cad. (Cries of Order and "chair.") Mr Pitten And you are a thundering liar. (Order, order.) Mr Hughes I repeat you are a contemptible cad. Mr Pitten (thumping the table) And I repeat you are a thundering liar and a snob. Mry reputation will bear inspection better than yours. (Re- newed cries of Order and Chair.") The Chairman's appeal for order was ultimately obeyed, and the meetipg proceeded without further incident. Dr. Mason (tne medical officer) reported that the death rate for the month of October was equivalent to 11*3 per 1,000 par annum. Mr W. H. Hughes was appointed representa- tive on the Court of Governors of the South Wales University College.

DEALT WITH AS A ROGUE. An elderly Pontypriddian. Richarl Evans, who resides at various lodging-houses, was before the Stipendiary (Mr Arthur Lewis) on Wednesday on charges of being drunk and dis- orderly and living on the earnings of a woman of ill-fame. Alti r evidence had been given by Serge-int Kavanagh and other officers, the Stipendiary remarked that it was not proved that defendant lived on the earnings of these women, but he came within the statute, as he had failed to satisfy the Court that he had any visible means of subsistance, and was found in company with unfortunate characters. De. fendant was sentenced to six weeks' imprison- ment.

At Swansea Guild Hall on Saturday the cer- tificate of the Royal Humane Society was pre- sented to Thomas Langley, a young man. of vVern-terrace. for his bravery in rescuing a boy named Levi Thomas from drowning. Mr W. F'. Richards, J.P., who made the presenta- tion, said but for Langlcy's bravery in plung- ing overboard to Thomas's rescue ho would have been drowned. Mr Richards also com- f mended the action of the rescued boy, ho had at great peril made an attempt to rescue another boy. The Rev. E. O. Evans, in re- turning thanks, said both boys belonged to his church, Langiey being a member of his Bible elass-an earnest young fellow, who was doing his best to equip himself for greater things than he had yet done.
