The Hangman's Story. --....---
The Hangman's Story. An Extraordinary Address. A week's mission to b3 conducted by Mr James Berry, of Bradford, for ten years public executioner to the British Government, was commenced on Saturday evening at Blakeney, Dean Forest, the arrangements having been made by the Baptist Church. Mr Berry. whom many people were anxious to SCP. looked the typical, jolly, fat batcher. He commenced the mission by addressing a not over-mil meeting in the Sunday school on Saturday evening. He mentioned that he was the son of religious parents who were fairly well off, but, that portion which fall to him. and would have entitled him to drive about in a rubber-tyred carriage, he wasted in riotous living. Drink was his bane. The description of some of the scrum- mages he got into was horrifying, but even though three men together were kicking him. he never knew what it was to give in. He had always been attracted by the hangman's science, and had' conceived the idea that by suffocating the case," and breaking the vertebras of the neck at the same time, it was a much less painful death than was commonly believed. On a vacancy occurring, he applied to the Home Office, and his '• patent having been explained, it got him the appointment out of 1,800 applicants. He insisted that under his treatment the culprit's face wore a pleasanter expression after execution than before it. He held the office from 1882 to 1893, and in that period was frequently in Ireland on busi- ness." His average was 25 culprits per y jar. He bad put to death only five women. So loathsome was the task that he could not do other than get drunk to dull his feeliDgs. He had hung as many as 17 with the same rope. The ropes were a perquisite, and were now exhibited at Madame Tussaud's. He gave up the appointment because he be lieved he bad hung both an innocent man and an innocent woman. It was onlv two years since that he himself became a Christian, and the light came to him at Bradford railway sta- tion, where he had taken his ticket for a jour- ney during which he intended throwing him- self on to the line to be killed, so wretched and wicked and debauched had he become. But as in the case of S. Paul, the Lord spoke to him and ail er wrestling with the Spirit for five weeks he finally came out on the Lord's side and joined himself to a mission of the Congrega- un tional ists.
SWANSEA STOCKBROKING DEAL
SWANSEA STOCKBROKING DEAL ALLEGED DETENTION OF TRANSFER.' Accountant's Action for 2100 Fails At Swansea County Court on Tuesday, before Judge Bryn Roberts, Kenneth Keak, ac- countant. 38, Waiters-road, Swansea, brought an action for E100 against S. P. Wills and Co. and S. Day O. Wills, stockbrokers, Swansea, for detention from the plaintiff of the transfer of 50 shares in the English Crown Spelter Co., Ltd. Plaintiff sued for delivery of the trans- fer, or -090. their value, and JE10 damages, or alternatively, £100 damages owing, to plaintiffs depriving him of the transfer. Mr Villiers Meager (instructed by Mr J. R. Richards) was for plaintiff, and Mr Davies Williams (instructed by 'Mr B. D. Thomas) defended, Mr Stobo Andrews watching the case for an interested pnrty. According to Mr -Meager, in April last, plaintiff agreed with a stockbroker named Mr Johnson to buy 50 Crown Spelter shares, and on the contract being made, Mr Johnson got the shares from a broker, Mr L. H. Price, who was acting for a client named Mr Campbell. Plaintiff paid Mr Johnson 288 for the shares, but the latter, iustead of paying Mr Price and obtaining the transfer, paid the money into his own banking account. There were difficulties against him getting it out again, aud he could not pay Mr Price. To help him out of the difficulty, Mr Wills came forward, paid Mr Price, and obtained the transfer, but although, despite a promise made to M* Johnson to see your client out right," he refused to hand the transfer to Mr Keay. Evidence was given by several witnesses with the object of showing that Mr Wills paid Mr Price in order to assist Mr Johnson and prevent him from being ham- mered on the Exchange. Dr. Davies Williams contended for the defence that the real position was that Mr Wills went into Mr Price's shoes as selling broker because he would show more consideration for Mr Johnson. If that was really the case. then the transfer could not be the property of plain till, and there cou)d be no detention. Mr S. Day O.Wills (of the defendant firm) said his arrangement with Mr Johnson was in the following words :— If it is but; a, matter of a few days, I will pay Price and hold the stock." He denied that he said to Johnson, I will see your clieut is right." Cross-examined Since the date of the contract the value of Crown Spelter shares had fallen 10s. His Honour held that whatever defendant might have said to a third party about seeing the client put right, it could not be twisted into an undertaking to hold the shares for Mr Keay. Defendant was entitled to the transfer as security for the money he had advanced, and the action must therefore fail.
VICAR'S SIMPLE FOOD,
VICAR'S SIMPLE FOOD, Strange Add ress on Chops and Dogs The Vicar of Clewer. St Stephen, Windsor (the Rev. G. D. Nicholas), in addressing an audience entirely composed of men at Windsor Parish Church, made some remarkable state- ments, which are causing a good deal of com- ment in the town. I lived alone," he said. "fol' 20 yeara, and in that time I never had a chop or steak. Why not ? Because it's the most expensive. You pay more for a chop than for two bones of a neck of- mutton, one of which will probably come in for another meal. I don't know anything that people are more insane about than babies and dogs. Both are all rigii t if properly treated. Perhaps you will think I don't know much about babies (the vicar is not married), but, anyhow, I do about dogs, and it is a sin and a shame to give a dog food proper for a Christian. I heard of a dog who was fed on a leg of mutton. One sees dogs about which are a disgrace to their owners, a burden to themselves, and a nuisance to other people. Often when I've dined out I've seen people send away on their plates food I would gladly have eaten. It always seems to me so extraordinary that after the Feeding of the. Five Thousand, our blessed Lord said, Gather up the frag- ments that remain, that nothing be lost.' Wouldn't any of you have said, Leave them for the poor birds ?' That is nonsense, except in a, hard frost. It is really an excuse for idleness and daintiness. I was sitting next a lady who was waiting her bread, so I said to her, If you will allow me I'll finish it for you,' and 1 did."
ROMANTIC LOVE STORY.
ROMANTIC LOVE STORY. Heir to 10 Millions. New York, Tuesday.—A telegram from Pitts- burg announces the engagement of Miss Violet Broeklebank, daughter of Mr Thomas Brockle- bank, a Londoner, to Mr George Westinghouse, jun-, the son of the famous inventor, and heir to £ 10,000,000. The story of the engagement is a strange one. Younge George Westinghouse had little taste, for society, and greatly preferred the attrac- tions offered by working early and late in his father's factories. It, was, therefore, but rarely that he even saw the guests of the family. On the occasion of Misrs Brocklebank's recent viait, however, she expressed a desire to be shown over the works, and George Westing- house was accordingly told off to act as her guide. She was much struck with the smart and handsome appearance of the workman who showed her round and with the careful and always comprehensible explanations he gave her as to the use of everything, and it was only after some hesitation that she could decide whether she ought or ought not to tip him. Her uext meeting with her workman in over- alls was in London, when she made his acquain- tance in a more conventional manner.—Cen- tral News.
DESERTED WIFE STRANDED.
DESERTED WIFE STRANDED. Collection in Court. A well-dressed woman, having a boy in her arms, asked the Caerphilly Bench on Tuesday if they could assist her and three children to re- turn to London. She stated that she had been enticed down from London by her husband, and he had since left her. A letter received from him stated that he was serving three months' im. prisonment for desertion when in London. She had lived for three weeks with her mother-in- law. who now stated that she could notremain there any longer. The Magistrates' Clerk (Mr R. Y. Evans): Wo have no poor box here. Alderman E. Edwards (the chairman) sug- gested that she should see the relieving officer. —The applicant stated she did not know how to get at him. Finally, Mr C. S. Goodfellow. solicitor, initiated a collection in court, a sum of about 15s being subscribed.
CHEAPEST GAS IN THE WORLD.
CHEAPEST GAS IN THE WORLD. According to The Gas World," pride of place as the suppliers of the cheapest gas in the world has now been wrested from the Widnes Corporation by the Sheffield Gas Company, who have just announced a reduction of Id. per thousand cubic feet in, the price, making the now scale Is 4d, Is 2d, and Is. according to con- sumption, and Is for gas used in gas engines. The Widnes scale is Is Id and Is 3d, with lid for gas used for power purposes. It is necessary to appeal to averages to get a proper compari- son, and it is found that in 1905 the receipts in Sheffield averaged Is bd and in Widnes Is 6d per thousand cubic feet. Including meter and stove rents, the respective averages were Is 6'93d and Is 6-73d. It appears, therefore, that the amount to be collected in future from Sheffield consumers, per thousand cubic feet of gas sold, will be about Id less than the cor- responding amount in Widnes.

YOUNG COUPLE'S TIFF."
YOUNG COUPLE'S TIFF." Elizabeth Sasan Akerman, a young married woman, made an allegation before the Barry magistrates on Monday that her husband. Henry Akerman, a brakesman, of Queen-street, Barry, had deserted her. Married on 3rd March this year at Merthyr Dovan Church they had con. tinued to live together at Queen'street until three weeks last Friday. She bad gone away with her husband's consent to Risca, but did not return until a few days after she had in. tended doing so. On the Thursday night when she arrived at the house her husband told her to go back to the place where she had come from. The Clerk When did he desert von ?—I didn't say that he had deserted me. I sum- moned him for maintenance. On the ground of desertion ?--No. sir, on the ground of cruelty. Continuing, complainant said she left him because on the Friday morning the furniture was being packed ready to send away. She asked her husband for an explanation, and he said Take your clothes and go." Her bus- band attempted to strike her, and she hit him Mr Richard Evans, who with Mr James Jones occupied the Bench, suggested a settle- ment. and ordered the case to be adjourned for a month. Mr Jackson said he would do what he could to restore peace in the home, and added that the woman "ad probably left in a huff." »■———■—i

NAVVY WAGES. AT SWANSEA. Protest by Mr John Ward, M.P. Mr John Ward, M.P., addressing a meeting of navvies at Swansea, referred to the conditions of labour at the dock now in course of con- struction. The work of organising navvy labour was. he said, more difficult at Swansea than at Barry or Cardiff. As to the working arrange- ments of navvies at the new dock, he under- stood the labour was done on the hog system; men were engaged without any written or formal contract, and were paid just what the employers iked. The Harbour Trust, so far as the conditions of the workmen wera concerned, had made no stipulation at all. And this despite-the fact cf Labour being repro-s- nted on the Harbour Board. It was surprising to him they had done nothing to get Trade Union wages paid. Itr Ward said he used to 7ork at Salford 20 years ago at 41d per hour. Have you increased your wages ?" SWANSEA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL…
SWANSEA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL FOR GIRLS, Proposed Important Extension. Dr. Williams, the superintendent of educa* tion, has prepared for submission at a meeting of the Swansea, Education Authority to-day an interesting report on a proposal to erect addi tional buildings at the Girls' Intermediate School at a cost of £4,000, and the -effect this expenditure will have upon the intermediate and technical fund. It appears that the pre- sent accommodation at Llwynbryn is inade. quate both for the constantly increasing num ber of pupils and the efficient working of tho school. As it now exists, the school is supposed to accommodate 215 pupils, but last term the number in attendance was 237- The proposed new accommodation will provide for 268 pupils, and at the same time provide a most necessary addition to properly equip the building to fulfil its purpose as a first grade secondary school, an addition also essential to enable it to be ecognised and worked under the regula- IS tions of the Board of Education for secondary schools and to earn the very substantial grants provided under those regulations.
