That Welsh music and Welsh singing should be represented at their best on the occurrence ofthea opportunities scarcely needs emphasising, and that such con- dition of things obtained when, at the invitation of Lord and Lady Windsor, the Koyal Welsh Ladies Choir, aud -nbsequently a section of the Cardiff Male Voice Choir/conducted respectively by Mrs Novello OavieB aDd Mr Rodeiick Williams, sang before the Royal party at SG. Griffith Jones, with whom he was always happy to co-operate in the great work, which both were engaged in such earnestness, Mr Whitfield yielding to hia Welsh friend the priority of evangelical preach- ing, or, as he quaintly words it in his letters, 'ploughing up tbe fallow ground of Wales In Dr. Gillies Life of Whitfield," he ipeaks of Dim in 1739, just after he had received priest's oriJerø-" Mr Wesley being come, he took an affectionate leave of his friends at Bristol, and made a second excursion into Wales, where an awakening bad begun some years before by the instrumentality of Rev. Griffith Jones," Again in one of his published letters—' The work begun by Mr Griffith Jones spread itself far and near in South and North Wales. Last year I visited several places, but now I went to more, and in every place I found that not one half had been 'told me tbe power of God at tbe Sacrament under the ministry of Rowlands was enough to make a person's beart barn within biru. Rees Hugh told Mr Charles that his accomplishments in public were difficult to describe, as in his day pulpit oratory was at its lowest ebb; his manner, tharefoie, was totally different from the inanimate 'demeanour of his predecessors and contemporaries. In the reading desk be appeared to be almost; over- powered by a sacred awe upon his mind, ever remembering that he was leading the prayers of his congregation to the great and eternal-and holy Lord God; and as he was a careful reader, pronouncing all bi8 word., with a grave yet pleasing acceut, so he never failed to engage the sericus attention of all his hearers. The fixed solemnity of his manner, and the evident interest he took in this part of the service, did not allow his audience to be long inattentite to his most solemn exhortations. It is my privilege in contributing this weekly column of Science and Health notes to be the re- cipient of many suggestive communications from readers who are interested from time to time in some special subject treated in this column. Recently I received a remarkable letter from a correspondent suggesting that some remarks on the medical treatment of grief and misery might prove of extreme advantage to many persons. The writer detailed tbe history of a very saa calamity occurring in his own family circle. • Is cbere," he said, no form of medical treatment known by means of which tbe effects of violent grief may be counteracted ? Has the medical profession discovered no means of alleviating sorrow ? If so. it appears to me the subject is one which well deserves the attention of medical men at large, seeing that, as the confidential advisers in families, they must come face to face with many instances in which, it their powers extend so far, they may be able to avert the consequences of extreme Borrow, unci of the mental prostration which undoubtedly follows it." My correspondent, through his letter, opens up a very difficult subject itadeed. I am afraid modern medicine, whilst pro. bably a little better armed to meet bdtb the written and unwritten troubles of the brain,mnst nevertheless be regarded as in a position in which it finds itself helpless to combat the effects of ordinary grief and sorrow. Every specialist who deals with brain troubles, and every physi- cians likewise, can, of course, administer a sleep- ing draught or a sedative by way of procuring for his patient temporary forpetfulness of hia troubles. This practice, however, only resembles tbat of throwing a sop to the Cerberus of disease. This treatment can in no senne be of a satis- factory nature, but where sleepleasnesaj^as to be fought and cared tbe administration of deugs calculated to nondoa into the &tms of Morpheus of conrse, a perfectly legitimate piece of practice on the part of tbe doctor. At the same time, the physicking of grief and sorrow may be said to represent a subject of the most ex- tteme difnoatty.for tbe reason tbat no one indivi- dual exhibits quite the same symptoms or shows tbe earns amonot of resisting power as his neigh- bour. On general principles, if the afflicted per- Ion can be got to take plenty of open air exercise, if hia sleeplessness be counteracted caieiulty by the nse of drugs, if cheerful society and the con- solations of friends be at band, sach measures are certainly calculated to assuage bis Borrow. In all this idea of treatment, of course, tbere is nothing new. It is founded upon tbe notion that if we can suceeed in builciog up tbe physical side of the frame, it will more IDccess- foly, b. able to resist tbe mental deprension. I believe myself there is great truth in this idea, simply because onr brain cells, which are the seats of tbe trouble, are themselves material things which are dependent for their health and vigour upon a due supply of healthy btaod. When this is withheld tbeir state becomes peri- lous indeed. "Hence the care of the body and the general iapprovement of the health may be regarded as representing the only sound and satisfactory mode of treating, not merely the unwritten but the written, troubles of" the brain which modem saeoicine baa at its com- mand. The Physical Cause of Sorrow, It so happens that in connection with tbia subject recently researches in physiology have opened up a. new view explaining the effects on the body at large of gtief and other strong mental emotions, It ia well-known that fatigue of our muscles is dae to the accumulation wiibita the muscle of certain waste substance which appears in the tisane as the result of bodily work. In Cbe healthy' muscle these wtiste matters are more or less promptly removed, but in the case of any bodily weakness, or on aceonnt of some bodily condition preventing the elimina- tion and disappearance of the waste products, the sensation of fatigue and the results of fatigue naturally exist after a much longer time than is compatible with health. In the case of strong mental emotions, it is similarly known that waste products, and in some cases actual poison- ous matters, may be developed not merely in the nervous system itself but in the body at large. When these matters affect the brain cells, being conveyed to them by the blood, we find mental depression, headache, and othet symp- toms to result from this curious and abnormal action of the body. The physical results which follow grief and sorrow may thus be regarded as exemplifying a species of poisoning of our brain cen". A wise physician remarked tbat he thought hysterical crying or laughing, copious weeping and moaning with other symptoms of intense grief, acted in a curative manner because these actions stimulated the tissues to the rapid removal of the poisonous products to which allusion hAil been made. A common pbrase that the person who at the time of deep sorrow cannot cry, and whose eyes are dry, bat who finds relief in tears, probably represents an excellent illustration of this latter remark. In the same way we regard the deep and silent sorrow as ott which is apt to produce much more lasting effects on the body than the sorrow which gives vent to itself both by tongue and tears. Of conrse, the effects of extreme grief may act apnn every organ in the body. It my affect the digestive system, producing derangements of the stomach and bowels. The heart itself is depressed, and the general tone of all the bodily processes is lowered. Grief is probablv io be regarded in this sense, that it affects certain parsons as a sedative of a very definite kind. Qnoting from the late Sir Benjamin W. Richardson, I find him recall the case of a mother iti wbom.oa the death of her child, there occurred an intermittent and irregu- lar action of the heart which at the date of bis writing, he tells tll, has never since passed away. Such illustrations can be paralleled in the ex- perience of all medioat men, The great lesson we learn, it seems to me, is that grief may be regarded in one sense as a source of disease in that it ncsets the even tenor of the body a ways, By way of counteracting it. there are no means known to science beyond those I have indicated, namely, the procuring of » certain amount of sleep and rest, and tbe bracing up of the physical powere of the body by all the methods and wayt known to health science. Typhus Fever. A recent epidemic of typhus fe\er in Aberdeen formed the subject of a dieensaion taken part in by the leading medical men of the northern city. I observe that the opinion was expressed that the origin of typhus fever, that is to say infection, is so hard to trace, and the bistoiy of a first case so difficult to follow out, that some doctors are in- clined to believe that it has sprung up de novo." I am sorry to note this expression of opinion on tbe part of any educated medical man. If, as we believe, on evidence of the most satisfactory character, that typhus fever rises, like other ferets as the result of the propagation of its germ within tbe human body, and if, further, in order that the fever may appear that body must have become infected with the germs, it is snrely a retrograde movement of the most typical char- acter to obllck to tbe Middle Ages and assume that a material disease can sDrio oat of nothing. Typhus fever, it may here be remarked, is, of conrse, a very different disease from one with which it was long confused, namely, typhoid or enteric fever. The history of the latter, as con- veyed to as by water, oysters, and other food polluted by its germs, it very clearly written. Tvpbo" fever, an the other hand, represents tbe u'"R80\ fever of olden times. It is a markedly infectious disease, and is chiefly found in the slums of cities and amongst the poor, who, especially in the winter season, crowd together io apartments, the ventilation of whiih is highly defective, and where the other insanitary con- ditions represented by dirt and squalor are present in bold array. The germs of typhus, we believe produce and multiply amongst tbe foul organic matter which is ever present in such over-erowded dwellings. If free ventilacion eould be adopted in all auch places the probability ia typhus fever would become non-existent simply for the reason that its germs would not find a suitable soil in which to grow and multiply. We know that tbe germa of scarlet fever, for eX- ample, may lay latent for years in articles of clothing or in children's tie.. and may wake up into activity and ptoducc verv dire effects on those who come in contact with them. by shcnld we not apply the same argument to the germs of typhus fever, which ha ve every oppor- tnnity of remaining persistent in tne dirty clothing a.nd the ditty surroundings of the poor? I notice that at tbe Aberdeen conference one msdiclIl man spoke of the possibility or typhus fever being conveyed by fleas; from the garments of the poor, tbe insects carrying the ailment to persons by accidental contact with them, and, of course, by the inoculation of the body through their bite. In this lespect typhus fever might be regarded as resembling the plague, which, it if well koo, n, is propagated '.btongh the plague germs being couveyeJ by flees from the bodies of tats to Uumaa beings.

Very pretty are the new skirts from Paris, with jast a suspicion of crinoline. more- over, the atiffening saves the skirt from a gcod deal of wear and tear at the hem, yielding & gentie spring with each step taken, and saving the material from dragging on the ground. All dress-stnffs are being treated with a little stiffen- ing in the, hems not only the flimsy varieties, bat also fineclotb and taffetas silks. Tbeoriginai of the simple walking gown sketched has a band f crinoline inserted in the hem, and in a charm ingerample of the new fashion. The drus is simplicity itself bnt has smartness, and, as the French say, "chic," It is in black cloth, with a neat little velvet collar and belt, and velvet buttons, the latter apparently securing the strap- pings on the skirt and cuffs, and also fastening the bedioe, which is cut with a point ana poaches slightly over the belt. A Floral Toque. Summer millinery presents tbe most amazing variety of istvies bats are now large and pic- turesque, now so small that they are almost ludi- crons, especially when perched at the extreme angle affected by the nltra-smart. The most novel hats are those of diminutive proportions, lifted high either at the back or at the left side, by means of a wide bandeau packed with flowers and ribbons, or feathers, their little dome-shaped crowns wteathed with flowers and foliage or bands of ribbon, tied in bows near the front, whepe the brims though upturned at the beck, are pressed out almost straight. These quaint little-hate are met with in self-colours and some- times also in mixed straws, the brims, possibly, Vale blue, while she crowns are black, or vice- versa, and one snch h!)t has a bonch, of black and bine ttraw wings as its decoration. Another summer has that is already having a great vogue is all of flowers, hyacinths being singled out as specially lasbtonable for the floral toque, a pretty example of which is sketched here, height being given by means of a bunch of leaves, poissd at the left side. Sometimes ribbon aigrettes are substituted for leaves, the ribbons being arranged in loops and forming, as it were, little trees or branches. A High-Neck Evening Blouse. The Contiaental fashion of wearing high-neck j evening blouses is rapidly growing in favonr in England, and is specially useful to thoie who joarney from the suburbs to town to visit theatres and other places of amusement. Sketched here is a semi-evening blouse that would look charmingly pretty in rose-coloured mousseline-de-soie and fine ivory lace, or in cream-coloured chiffon. The round yoke is of transparent lace edged with guipure flowers, and the flounced sleeves are also bordered .with motifs of gnipure, while the mousselino is handsomely gauged round tbe neck and over the shoulders. Very pretty are the blonses of cream and of white ohiffon or mousseline, with pale pink or pale blue slips, and rosettes and sashes carrying out the colour of the elipa. A pretty fashion, again, is the blouse of Valenciennes lace insertion and ribbon-velvet, arranged in alternate bands also the blouse of soft satin inlat with tine lace and hanging from a deep, shaped yoke of lace to match- Great effeats are wrought with a sprinkling of tiny crystals on lace, a yoke so fashioned supporting a dainty blouse of opal-hned taffetas silk, made with elbow sleaves, puffed and racked and finished with ruffles of lace. The Vogue of Embroideries. Embroideries, always more or 1. VOSTOS,, are particularly fashionable this season, and adorn the simplest fabrics. The embroidered linen shirt is esne&ally appreciated, and accounts well for itself in white with a wheat-ear design worked in willon-blue or oldiro flax-thread. Nor is it less successful in cornflower-blue, embroidered in white. Little touches of embroidery on lace applqnes of embroidered canvas or cloth de- signs carried out in ribbon or chiffon these are some of the ladllof fashion that beautify frocks and blonses for the summer. Our collars, too, of linen, canvas, lawn a.nd silk, are daintily em- broidered either in white or colours and printsti galons, imitating hand-embroidery, are profusely worn.
