They had wandered round, and round in that blinding snowstorm hopelessly lost, in a place only a hundred yards square; and when cold and fatigue vanquished them at last, they scooped out a cave in the snow and lay down and died, not knowing that jive steps more would have brought them into the true path." Thus eleven precious lives were lost in making the descent from Mont Blanc in September, 1870. They suffered the bitterest death recorded m the history of those mountains, full as that history is with dreadful tragedies. Sad to think that they were so near safety, and yet through ignorance so far from it. Alas! how many die, under different conditions, but for a like reason. Here is a man who says, "All my friends thought I was doomed, and I did not care whether I lived or died." He explains as follows:—"Up to October, 1885," he says, I was a strong, healthy man, and equal to any kind of work. At this time I was taken with a pain that seemed to shoot straight through my heart. I felt as if some- thing was squeezing my heart, and I was in dreadful agony. I had to abandon work and lie up. Then I fell into a low, weak way. I had no appetite, and every morsel I ate gave me a great pain at the chest and a tight, uncomfortable feel- ing as if all my food turned to wind and did not pass my stomach. I had a great pain at my back and sides, and was never free from pain night or day. Such food as I was able to take lay like a load on my stomach, and my heart would thumb so badly I could get no sleep, and night after night I would lie awake. I became that weak I dare not lift the lightest article, and so nervous that the slightest sound startled me. Even the children's noise at play upset me. When I ventured out of doors I had to often stand and rest, and my legs were so unsteady I could not walk straight. All this told on my spirits, for before my attack I scarcely knew my strength, I could lift a sack of flour with ease. I went to our doctor, who said mine was a bad case. He gave me medicines, but I got no relief from them. Now better, now worse, but never well, I remained in this state for ovsr 12 months, and was under the doctor all that time. At last the doctor recommended me to go to Norwich Hospital and put myself under a cele- brated physician there as an indoor patient. I did so in November, 1886. The physician said, 'Your heart is strained and very weak.' "Whilst in the hospital I was examined by three doctors, and after being under treatment five weeks my case was pronounced incurable. The doctors said I would never be able to do hard work again and would never get any stronger. I was now anxious to get home, so I left the hospital, but kept on receiving medicine as an outdoor patient for three months longer. Getting weaker and weaker, I gave up taking their medicine and tried different medicines my friends told me of; but nothing did any good, and I lingered on month after month. Now, indeed, I began to despair, for from a strong, powerful man I was reduced almost to a shadow, and did not cara whether I lived or died. In June, 1887, a book was left at my house which described a preparation called Mother Seigel s Syrup, and I read of one like mine being cured by it. I said to my wife. Here is a case that exactly corresponds with my I had lost all faith in medicines, but as a last resource sent to Mr Edgerley, Supply Stores, Bungay, for a bottle, and had not taken more than half the contents before I felt better. Wife/ I said. 'I believe this Seigel's Syrup is go- ing to cure me.' "I began to eat and the food did me good, and I grew stronger and stronger. After taking three bottles 1 got back to my work strong and healthy, and since then I have never looked behind me. By taking an occasional dose I keep in good health. I can now eat anything and do any kind of work, and went through harvesting as well as anyone, and can lift a pig with ease. I thank God that Seigel's Syrup was ever made known to me, and feel that I owe my life to it. You are at liberty to publish this statement, as I am willing to tell anyone of the benefit I have derived from the medicine. Yours truly, (Signed) MR ROBERT WRIGHT, „L "Earsham, Bungay, Norfolk." Witness (Signed) ISAAC WEIGHT, Grocer and Tea Dealer, Earsham." Mr Wright's complaint was indigestion and dyspepsia, and the heart disturbance which so alarmed him was the result of the mechanical pressure of the stomach against the heart when the latter was inflated with the gases created by undigestad and fermented food. Many are mis- led thus to mistake indigestion for some other malady. We can only say we are glad our friend found the true path (the right medicine) before bis disease left him no remnant of life to blow into a flame.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST POLICE CONSTABLES. At Wednesday's meeting of the Cardiff Watch Committee, Alderman Jacobs presiding, the following lettsr containing serious allegations against members of the borough police force was read w r 7. The woman referred to by the writer was married, and the officer had gone to fetch her to attend the Quarter Sessions, where she was a witness in his case.—Councillor Jibenezer Beavan said that the charges were of serious import to the police. There was evidently nothing in the charge.—Mr White Pardon me, Mr Beavan. Who is he. The Head Constable: I know something about the antecedents ot the man, but I would not like to pre- jndice the mind of the committee on this subject. Mr Beavan said they should have the writer before them at as early a date as possible, in the interests of the men accused, of tne Head Constable, and the discipline of the force generally. It was unanimously agreed to ask Mr Murtagh to attend a special meeting of the com- mittee to be convened by the chairman.

-:: "THE WELSH REVIEW."
"THE WELSH REVIEW." Affairs of Mr Ernest Bowen Rowlands. At the London Bankruptcy Court on WednGS" day the first meeting was held of the creditors of Ernest Bowen Rowlands, against whom receiving order was made orythe petition of the National Press Agency, Limited, Whitefriars- street, creditors for £ 445, mainly due in connec- tion with the printing, &c., of the Welsh Review." From the preliminary examination it appears that the debtor was called to the bar in 1889, and in 1891 brought out the "Welsh Review;" that he had no capital of his own, but borrowed between JB500 and £ 400; that the paper was printed by the National Press Agency, Limited, and was published by Messrs Kegan Paul and Company; that he over-ordered the first number of the magazine-a monthly review-by 15 000 copies, which had led to difficulties which he had not been in a position to clear up. He had, in March last, assigned the Review to Messrs Ranken, Ellis and Company in satisfaction of their claim for printing the same, and he had now no further interest in it. It further appeared that his income for the last three years had been between £ 1,000 and £1,500 a year, and that his expenditure had exceeded that amount that he had icept no books of account that he was entitled under the will of his grand- father, the late Mr J. D. Brown, to a rever- sionary interest in certain land and houses in Pembrokeshire, the value of which he had no idea of, but that it was contingent on the death of his father. It was 1.10th share, and was mortgaged for £ 1,500. He declined to state as to whether be had made any losses by betting or gambling, hut stated that he had never engaged in Stock Exchange speculations or in accommodation bills; that he had no settled income, had lived from hand to mouth, and had never been in a position of solvency. He attributed his failure to his expenses having exceeded his income mainly owing to the heavy expenditure on the Welsh Review in bringing it out, &c., he having done practically the whole of the work himself. Amongst the proofs put it was one on behalf of Mr A. D. Kemp for £ 401, for which security was held aver the reversion, but which was not valued. Mr Chalkley (Lewis and Lewis) pointed out that the claim appeared amongst the fully secured creditors. The Chairman asked the creditor whether he intended to abandon his security, not having valued it ? Mr Kemp's representative said that that wa3 certainly not his intention. His client considered he was fully secured. The proof accordingly stood over. The Chairman said that there was another proof by Mr W. R. Kemp for j6455, against which security was held, which was unvalued. Mr Kemp said he appeared as attorney in support of the proofs in question. A sum of j6800 had been advanced upon the security of property worth about £ 700. The last debt he considered was secured to the amount of about JS300. The proof stood over for amendment. In reply to a question as to whether there waa any proposal, Mr Leonard (Dobbin, Billings, and Co.), on behalf of the debtor, asked for an adjournment to enable a proposal to be made to the creditors. He suggested a month's adjournment, as that would enable his client to make a proposal which he thought would be satisfactory to the creditors. The Chairman said that he must have some idea as to what the proposal was. Mr Leonard said that it would take the shape of 7s 6d in the JB, part in cash and the balance by instalments. After some discussion the meeting was ad- journed for three weeks.
CARDIFF ROYAL HOTEL.
CARDIFF ROYAL HOTEL. The Deputy Town Clerk Explains. The subject of the dismissal of a summons which had been taken out against the manage- ment of the Royal Hotel, and the withdrawal of other summonses, came up at an ord in ary m eeting of the Cardiff Watch Committee. on Wednesday, Aid. Jacobs, one of the three magistrates who adjudicated in the matter, pre- siding over an attendance which comprised Councillors E. Thomas, Jenkins, E. Beavan, White, and Hughes the Deputy Town Clerk (Mr P. C. Lloyd), and the Head Constable (Mr Mackenzie). In reply thereto, the Deputy Town Clerk gave a detailed account of what took place in court. He said that after an absolute plea of guilty on the part of the defendants, and after a full and ample undertaking regarding the future conduct of the house, he was satisfied that the object of the prosecution had been attained. He thereupon in- formed the Court that there was nothing on his brief to which he need call special attention. Six summonses had been taken out. this being a customary course adopted in quasi criminal proceedings. When a conviction did not result on the first summons it was usual to withdraw the subsequent charges, the first case submitted beingpresumablv the strongest. The reason no evidence was taken was because it would have been a work of supererogation on his part to at- tempt to prove a charge which was admitted. Here was an absolute admission; whereas it was frequently difficult to prove a charge with mathematical correctness. was asked why were not the facts explained. There was only one fact in the charge, namely, unlawfully allowing the premises to be the habitual resort and meeting-place of prostitutes. There was nothing on his brief but which pointed to that charge, and, after the full admission, he did not feel justified in saying one word regarding the facts mentioned. Again, he was asked if he insisted upon a fine being imposed. It was not for the advocate to suggest to the Bench what they had to do. It would be impertinent in the highest degree. All the advocate had to do was to prove his case. If there was an admission of the truth of it, nothing remained for him to do. It was for the Bench to deal with it in the exercise of their judicial discretion.—Councillor White, at the conclusion of the Deputy Town Clerk's explanation, remarked that the outcome of the whole matter was that a summons, to which a plea of guilty had been entered, was actually dismissed by the Bench. (Hear, hear.)—Council- lor Jenkins presumed that after this decision, a shebeener who promised to do better in the future would be entitled to be let off.The Deputy Town Clerk That would be a matter for the Bench.—On the motion of Councillor Thomas, seconded by Councillor Hughes, a resolution was unanimously carried expressing complete satisfaction with the conduct of the Deputy Town Clerk on the occasion of the recent prosecution.
