DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN FENIAN. CINCINNATI. Monday.—Mr G. Halpen, who, curing the war was a general in the United j k^tes Army, and who was afterwards imprisoned -England as a Fenian, died yesterday at his residence here.-Reuter.

ANARCHISM IN PARIS. PARIS, Tuesday Morning.—M. Very, the ^taurant proprietor who was injured in the recent dynamite outrage, died at 20 minutes to one this morning. -Reuter. PARIS, Monday.—The funeral of M. Hamond, who on Friday succumbed to the terrible injuries yhich he sustained in the explosion at the Very Restaurant, took place this morning at Pere Chaise cemetery, and partook of the character <i public demonstration of sympathy with the victim of Anarchist vengeance. The whole route was lined with spectators, and a very large bUtnber of people followed the cortege to the graVe. The President of the Municipal Council was Present. -Beuter.

DEATH OF A HUNGARIAN STATESMAN. BUDA PESTH, Monday.—M. Baross Y. Bellus, Hungarian Minister of Commeroe, died here to-day. The deceased was the originator of the zone tariffs on the-Hungarian railwtys. -Reuter.

MURDER OF A DIPLOMATIC AGENT. CONSTANTINOPLE, Tuesday.—After a prolonged •rial the two men Merdjan and Christo have been guilty of the wilful murder of Dr Vul- kovitc'n, the late Bulgarian Diplomatic Agent ?ere« and have been condemned to death. The brothers Navum and Nicolas Tufekchieff, who ad to Russia, and a e in safety there, were sen- tenced in their absence to 15 years' penal servitude for having instigated the commission of the crime -B,-titer.

NORTH HACKNEY ELECTION. On Wednesday the polling took place in con- Qfiction with the vacancy in the North Hackney Divisionof London caused by the death of Sir Aiewis Pelly, its Conservative representative. The candidates were Mr W. R. Bousfield, Q.C., Con- servative, and Mr T. A. Meates, Liberal. A here were seven polling booths. The Jjiberals took the lead in the work of the day, their opponents not being represented at the booths until some time after eight o'clock. After the first hour the rate of the polling decreased, hut it was computed that by noon between 2,000 ad 3,000 had polled. Ample provision of car- riages had been made by both parties for the conveyance of voters. The result of the poll was declared at 11 o'clock Oil Wednesday night as follows, viz. SEQUEL TO A DIVORCE SUIT. On Tuesday the Court of Appeal, consisting of the Master of the Rolls, and Lords Justices Fry and Lopes, had before them the appeal of Mr E. O. Han bury for a new trial or setting aside and judgment in the petition for divorce brought by his wife and tried before Justice Butt. Mr Lock- wood, for the appellant, contended that the rule nisi should be set aside on the grounds that Mr Hanbuxy was suffering from insanity. The Master of the Rolls, without calling on the other side, dismissed the appeal with costs.

I ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AT MERTHYR. On Monday, Thomas Francis, an elderly man, who resides in Field-street, Cefn, attempted, whilst in bis back garden, to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. He inflicted some injury upon himself, and made a second attempt. when a woman who had observed him from an adjoining garden went to him and took the razor away. Dr Flood was called to drass the wounds, and the sufferer is now laid up in bed, and pro- gressing as well as could be expected. The un- fortunate man had suffered for some time past from depression.

A CHILD "TIREDOF LIFE." The Liverpool police are investigating the cir- cumstances under which a girl aged eight years has twice attempted to commit suicide. The child, who has lost both father and mother, resides with an aunt in Needham-road. On Friday night she attempted to hang herself, but was cut down by a neighbour in time to save her life. On recovering she tried to cut her throat with a table- knife. She said she was tired of life and wished to die. She is now in the Children's Shelter.

I A MILITARY OFFICERS SUIT FOR DIVOKCE. In the Divorce Division of the High Court at Justice, on Wednesday, before Lord Justice Lopes, the case of Cromie v. Cromie and Coddmgton was heard. This was a petition for dissolution of marriage by Captain Charles Francis Cromie, of tbe 37th Regiment, who alleged adultery by hia wife with the co-respondent, who, at the time, was a commander on board the Duke of Wellington, then stationed at Portsmouth. The suit was un- defended. Mr Searle was for the petitioner, who, in his evidence, said that he was married to the respondent who was a Miss Bowen, at Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, on the 21st July, 1881. His wife had an income of JB120 a year. They lived at different places where his regiment was stationed, and in 1884 they re- sided at Gosport. They there made theacquatn- tanee of Mr Coddmgton, who was a commandex on board H.M.S. Duke of Wellington. The petitioner had to go to Aldershot to attend to his duties, and was home only from Saturday to Monday. In July, 1884, he was ordered to Malta. He desired bis wife to accompany him, but she deebned at the time, and did not join him until later. Subsequently he was ordered to India, and information reached him in reference to bis wife's conduct. Evidence was given to prove that in the absence of her husband Captain Coddmgton was in ttl. habit of visiting Mrs Cromie, and staying as late as two and three o'clock in the morning. Out witness had seen them kissing each other, and another said she had seen Coddington go into Mrs Cromie's bedroom, but could not say that Mrs Cromie was there. Letters also passed be- tween them. Mrs Cromie wore her dressing* gown when Captain Coddington was coming. One of the witnesses said that Mrs Cromie sent her to Captain Coddington one day for her purse, which she had left in his cabin.—His Lordship pronounced a decree nisi for the dissolution of the marriage, with costs against Captaia Coddington.

FIRE IN A CARDIFF TIMBER YARD. About a quarter-past seven o'clock on Wednes. day evening it was discovered that tbe timbet stored in the yard of Mr David Thomas, cooper and timber merchant, near tb. Matthouse, East Moors, Cardiff, was on fire. The stock consisted of a large quantity of dun- nage wood, teak, mahogany, green heart, a barrels to the value of several hundred pounds, and there was also on the west side of the yard y stable containing a couple of horses. Information of the fire was conveyed, about half-past seven, to Superintendent O'Gorman, of the Bute Docht police, who at once proceeded to the yard with th* firehoseandastrongforceof polieeand members of the Docks Fire Brigade. A good supply of water was obtained from the two hydrants adjoining. and with three jets the fire bngade soon got th* fire under. The wind being from the east the. stables were in danger of being ignited, but they and the horses were saved. A good deal of the dunnage wood was destroyed, and some of the teak, mahogany, deals, and barrels were considerably damaged by fire and water. Mr Thomas estimates the damage done at between B200 and £300. The material in the yard was insured to the extent of j3500. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it is supposed that a spark from a passing engine, the yard being close to the railway, ignited some of the old dunnage wood.

THE RISING IN BURMAH. ^CALCUTTA, Monday.—Mr M'Cabe, with the -pastern Sonai column, captured the Lushai stronghold of the Bimgteya on the 7th inst. DEATH OF LORD BRAMWELL. Lord Bramwell died at a quarter past twelve o'clock on Monday afternoon, at his residence, Holmwood, Edenbridge, Kent, from the effects of a severe chill contracted recently when travelling from London. The deceased peer was the son of the late Mr George Bramwell, banker, and was born in London in 1808. In early youth he was placed in his father's counting house, where he acquired a practical knowledge of the business of banking, which in after years proved of great value to him. Having resolved to try the legal profession, ho practiced for some time as a pleader, and was, in 1838, called to the Bar, and went the Home circuit. He gradually obtained a large business as a lawyer and pleader; in 1849 was a member, with Sir J. Jervis, Sir A. Cockburn, Mr Willes, and Mr Baron Martin, of the Common Law Procedure Commission, which resulted in the Common Law Procedure Act of 1852.. In 1851 he became a Queen's Counsel, and was a member of the Com- mission for inquiring into the law of partnership. Differing in opinion with the majority of the Commission, ho recommended ths adoption of a law of limited liability as now existing. In answer to the objection that parsons might deal with limited liability companies believing them to be un- limited, Mr Bramwell suggested a distinguish- ing addition to their name as "limited." This advice was adopted, and gave great satisfaction. Mr Bramwell was, in 1856, made a Baron of the Exchequer, and received the honour of knight- hood. In October, 1876, hfl was made a Judge of the Intermediate Court of Appeal, and sworn of the Privy Council. He retired from the bench at tho close of the year 1881, when a compli. mentary banquet, attended by the judges and ths principal members cf the legal profession, was held in his honour. In February, 1882, he was raised to the peerage by the title of Baron Bram- well, of Hevcr, in the county of Kent.

THE LATE MR R. J. DAVIES, CWRTMAWR. Funeral at Llangeitho. Amid manifestations of profound sorrow the funeral of the late Mr R. J. Davies, J.P., Cwrtmawr, near Tregaron, took place on Wed- nesday. The departed gentleman was well-known throughout Wales, and was as widely honoured. A prominent member of the Calvimstio Metho- dist connexion in the county, his generous help and ready co-operation in advancing the cause in the various positions he hald will be sadly missed. He was treasurer of the General Assembly, and also of the North Cardiganshire monthly meeting. As a county magistrate, he was constant in attendance at the magisterial sittings in the Tregaron petty sessional division, and the sound legal education which he acquired in his early days, and the tact and common sense he always displayed in cases over which he had to adjudicate were highly appreciated. He was also Chairman of the Board of Guardians, and the cause of the needy and distressed received his careful con- sideration and support. Amongst a large circle of friends he was highly esteemed and beloved, and his death is deeply lamented. The mortal remains of the departed gentleman were interred at the Methodist grave yard at Llangeitho, a place hallowed by reason of its as- sociation with the reverend Daniel Rowlands. The mournful function attracted friends from far and near, and the funeral was one of bhe largest and certainly the most representative which had ever taken place in the neighbourhood. The body was placed in a massive oak coffin, which was surmounted with a brass plate, bearing the following inscription :—" Robert J. Davies, born August 2nd, 1839, died May 6tb, 1892." A brief service was held at Cwrtmawr, the residence of the deceased, the Rev T. Levi, Aberystwyth, reading a portion of Scripture, and the Rev Principal Edwards, Bala, offering prayer. The coffin was then conveyed to the hearse, and as the Llangeitho chapel choir sang the favourite hymn, "0, Salem, fy anwyl gartrefle," in front of the mansion, a procession was formed in the following order: Police, ministers, deacons, county councillors, guardians, tenants, mourners, and friends. The mourners were :— First carriage.—Mrs R. J. Davies (widow), Mrs Sannders (eldest daughter, and wife of the Rev J. Saunders, of Penarth), and the Misses Mary, Annie, and Lily Davies (daughters). Second carriage.—Mrs Principal Edwards, Bala, and Miss Roberts and Miss Mary Roberts, Aberystwyth. Third carriage.—Rev Principal Edwards, Bala Mr R. D. Roberts, D.Sc London; Mr Charles, Liverpool (first cou-iin); and Mr D. J. Davies, Aberystwyth (brother-in-law to deceased). Then followed the hearse, those walking behind it being Mr J. J. Davies and Mr Walter Davies (sons), Rev J. Saunders (Penarth), and Mr Councillor D. C. Roberts (Aberystwytb). Chief Constable Howell Evans and Superintendent Lloyd (Aberystwyth) headed the funeral cortege, and amongst those present were the Revs Llewellyn Edwards, M.A., J. Levi, Penllyn Jones, Lewis Williams, John Williams, William Jones, and R. Hughes, Aberystwyth; Griffith Davies, Cardiff; Rees Morgan, Llanddewi-brefi John Bowen, Pontrhydfendigaid; J. T. Morgan, Penygarn (secretary of the North Cardigan Monthly Meeting) William Morgan, Penygarn; Morris Morgan, Swansea; D. Meyler, Haverford- west; Dr Rees, Bronant; D. A. Jones, Llangeitho; Rev John Evans, Abermeurig; and Messrs William Jones, Unionist candidate for the county; J. Jones, J.P., Cilpyll; D. J. Williams, J.P., Pencefn; Watte Williams, J.P., St. Davids; and Councillors Evan Evans, New Quay; D. W. E. Rowlands, Llanddewibrefi and D. Lloyd, Lampeter. Charles, Carmarthen, grandfather of the deceased, and brother to the late D. Charles, Bala), Yn y dyfroedd mawr a'r tonau," Dwy aden colomen pe cawn (the favourite hymn of the late Principal Davies, Trevecca, and which was sung at bis funeral). The chapel was reached about two o'clock. A bnef but solemn and impressive service was conducted in the vernacular, which was com- menced with a feeling rendering of the hymn, "Tragwyddoldeb mawr yw d'Enw," after which the Rev W. Jones, Aberystwyth, read that por- tion of Scripture which referred to the death of Moses after having a glimpse of the Holy Land. Prayer being offered by the Rev John Williams, Aberystwyth, the Rev Principal Edwards, Bala, uttered a few words and paid a tribute to the memory of the departed gentleman. Upon approohmg the sacred resting-place of the saints, he proceeded, they could not help noticing the statue of the sainted Daniel Rowlands, whose upraised hand seemed to command them to concen- trate their minds upon heavenly things and the resurrection to the life beyond. If their late brother had not lived 80, and always looked to the spiritual world, little mention, doubtless, would be of him to-day.—The Rev Rees Morgan, Aberystwyth, referred to the irre- parable loss which the Methodist cause, and especially the Llangeitho congregation, had sus- tamed by the death of the deceased gentleman, which would be severely felt by all with whom he was associated. He was for nine years closely acquainted with him, and he never left his company without feeling that he was benefited by his discourse and ex. amples. — The Rev Enoch James paid a pathetic tribute to the sterling qualities of the deceased as squire, master, and magistrate, and the Rev T. Levi evinced much emotion in ex- pressing his deep sorrow upon losing one who had proved a sincere friend during the last 25 years. The congregation, the monthly meeting, and the connexion generally had lost a true friend and supporter, and whilst hearing the hymns of the late D. Charles (Carmarthen) being sung on the way the rev gentleman there seemed to have been great haste to gather his family from the earth, the departed gentleman being the last member of the family. The hymn A welsoch chwi Ef ?" having been sung, the body was con- veyed to the grave, where it was laid amid general manifestations of grief and regret, the Rev Wm. Morgan, Penllyne, reading a portion of Scripture, and the Rev Griffith Davies offering prayerr. The hymn Mae nghyfeillion adre'n myned was also sung. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Howell, Aberystwyth.

FOOT-AND-MOUTH RESTRIC- TIONS REVOKED. TheBoardof Agriculture haveissued instructions to their inspectors with reference to tho removal of the restrictions which were placed upon the movements of cattle when the foot-and-mouth disease broke out in London. On Monday the re- strictions regarding the removal of cattle to, in, or from the County of London are revoked, and the only restrictions remaining in force are those issued under last year's Pteuro-pneumonia Order.

NARROW ESCAPE OF A BOY NEAR BRITON FERRY. On Monday an extraordinary accident occurred near Briton Ferry. An express train dashed into a donkey and cart, which were being driven by a boy over a level crossing at Baglan, near Briton Ferry, The donkey was killed, the sbafta of the cart cut away, but the boy was uninjured. He was discovered crying over the unfortunate fate of his steed.

EXTRAORDINARY NBWS FROM ANTWERP. Major C. Hurt, writing from 69, Rue St Vin- cent, Antwerp, says "I only received one of Harness' Electropathic Belts the day before yesterday at 9 a.m., being crippled with lumbago in an armchair. I put it on immediately. An hour afterwards I was able to get up and sit down without catching hold of the armchair. Yester- day I walked easily, and to-day I am completely recovered. REMINISCENCES OF CARDIFF. • l. TALES OF THE TOWNSFOLK. ,I J < (By Caerdyddian.) IL-CARDIFF'S COACHING DAYS. In the sketch of the town published with the preceding article was shown a large square build- ing occupying the site where now stand the warehouses in Westgate-street, next the Grand Theatre. That building and its surroundings were called the Lower Yard, and were the pro- perty of Mr John Bradley, who used to horse the mail coaches. He established the Irish mail coaches, the letters having, before his time, been carried on horseback. The coaches stopped at the Cardiff Anns and at the old Angel Hotel. Mr Bradley ran the mails from Milford on the one side to Newport on the other, having a partner in the latter town, who provided horses to carry them to the Old Passage, where crossing was then made for Bristol. The coach office was in the Angel Hotel, which stood where Lord Bute's office now is, in Castle-street. In the Lower Yard was stabling for sixty horses, and Mr Bradley was famed for his teams, he taking immense pride in them. He horsed all the coaches going out of Cardiff, those to Merthyr as well as those eastward and westward. The relative importance of Mertbyr in those days must be borne in mind. At present it is one among many other populous centres in South Wales but sixty or seventy years ago it was pre- eminent, and had the distinction of sustaining coach service. But the road was a difficult one to travel. On the other route, Milford-Cardiff-Gloucester, the roads are said to have been good and the coaches maintained a speed of ten miles an hour, including stoppages. At first, the regulation speed was eight miles but the Post Office (there must have been business men at headquarters in those days) insisted on increase to ten miles. "The horses were three-quarter bred," says one old Cardiffian who remembers those days, and they could keep up a gallop all the way from Newport to Cowbridge. It was the sight of the town to see the coaches come in and go out." With all due respect to this authority, one must question the gallop so far as regards getting out of Cardiff westwards, for the old bridge was narrow, and with tortuous I approaches from the town. OLD CANTON BRIDGE. I Those were the days when Lucas, the fisher- man, pursued his avocation in the Taff; and standing on the bridge here shown, the townsfolk have seen him hard at work in his coracle. Captain Jackson, who married Mis3 Lewis of the Heath, caught a salmon one day, right under the bridge. Harking back to the subject of the mails, we note (the period is between 1825 and 1830) that the London mail arrived in the afternoon and after waiting 25 minutes, the guard disturbed his passengers (doubtless more hungry but certainly not less determined than the occupants of Swin- don refreshment room during the immutable ten minutes) with "Coach ready, gem'men and all hands had to mount and be off, the westward jour- ney being continued right to Milford Haven, whence (says acentemporaryrecord) "the Irish mails are conveyed by large and commodious steam packets." Miltord evidently had, in those days, the distinction it now sighs for, namely, that of being a mail port. The Post-office was in Duke-street, and Mr John Bird, bookseller, was postmaster. The up mail passed through Cardiff about nine o'clock in the morning, and there was I also a daily mail to and from Merthyr, the despatch from Cardiff to Merthyr being made immediately after departure of the coach for Milford,and the returns from Merthyr being in the morning in time to catch the up-mail for London. The White Lion, at Merthyr, Was the destination of the coaches. There was daily service, too, to Gloucester and Bristol, starting from the Cardiff Arms and the Angel. A from the Cardiff Arms and the Angel. A conveyance to meet the steam packet at New- port ran twice a day, from the Globe Inn, still standing at the corner of Womahby-street. The old Town Hall stood, as has been previously mentioned, in the middle of High-street, and was ac- counted a handsome and commodious public building, if we may judge from the appreciative references made to it, and the particular descriptions of its internal accommodation. Every alternate Thursday a Court of Record was held therein. In the west part is a chamber wherein the jurors, on being sworn, remain till they have delivered in their verdict; and in the south end is a spacious chamber where the magistrates and aldermen consult." Under the Town Hall was the prison. In the High-street, in proximity to the Town Hall, the regular markets were held. It was here that John Wesley preached, nearly 100 years earlier, 1739, and the populace, not relishing the aggre- sive Christianity of the early Metho- dists, procured a dead fox and; organised a hunt, so as to dis- turb the service. CHRISTMAS EVANS. nacle Chapel, in the Hayes. It was in 1826-7 that he left Anglesey and took up pastoral work in Caerphilly and during his residence there came down occasionally to con- dact service at Cardiff. He was invited to become pastor of the Tabernacle, but did not accept. One of his closest friends at Caerphilly was the father of Dr Edwards, Cardiff. Afterwards, when Evans had removed to Carnarvon and came south on the journey which terminated his life, he agam visited Cardiff in his mission of collecting sub- scriptions for the Carnarvon Church. The pre- sent Mayor of Cardiff (Alderman T. Rees) has been among Christmas Evans's auditors. Cardiff boasts to-day of its commercial posi. tion, rapid progress, and brilliant prospects; yet the burgesses of 60 years ago bad even greater reason for boasting, for their position, ootrpara- tively with that of other ports of the kingdom, was a highly favourable one. The late Lord Bute was not alone in recognition of the promise and possibilities of the port Malkin, whose Tours through Wales" bears date 1803, states in reference to Cardiff that Its capability as a port and haven was Un. rivalled and, although a cleric, be ventured on prophecy of the great future in store for the town on the Taff. To j London there was a steady business in iron, a regular line of fast schooners voyaging between 1 the two places, their London mooring being at j Cotton's Wharf, in Tooley-street, and the trips being made each alternate week, i requently, we are told, they were able to accomplish the voyage in five days; and the charges for carriage of goods by these vessels are said to have been not more than one-fourth the charge for land carriage to Bristol." The ironworks up the Valleys produced chain cables, anchors, castings, &c. and the Glass Work& (established 1825-6), which stood where Mount Stuart-square, Cardiff, has since been built, turned out large quantities of glass bottles. These, with coal, formed the cargoes of the coasters that frequented the port. London does not seem to have taken any tin-plates but Bristol did. The principal iron-masters were Mr Wm. Crawshay,atCyfarthfa; Messrs Guest,Lewis, and Co., at Dowlais; Messrs R. and A. Hill, Plymouth Works and Messrs Forman and Co., Penydarren. These latter were also part- proprietors of the then recently-erected works at Rhymney, known by the name of the Bute Works, the Marquis of Bute being owner of the land where they were erected. Mr Crawshay had works at Hirwain, and there was also an iron- works at Aberdare. At Newbridge (Pontypridd) were the chain and anchor works of Samuel Brown and Co., the productions of this firm being supplied to the Royal Navy, the East India Company, and to foreign Governments. At those works were made the chain cable and anchor of the Columbus, noted in its day as "the largest ship that ever arrived in Great Britain this cable weighed eighteen tons, and the anchors were four tons each. The chains of the famous Brighton Chain Pier also came from he as well as those for Hammersmith Bridge. The coal trade was not then of supreme im- portance to Cardiff. Nevertheless, a very con- siderable trade was carried on in that commodity, the principal ports of Ireland and of the West of England beiug supplied hence. Mr Walter Coffin, of Llandaff Court, was a large shipper, and employed several vessels exclusively in the trade. The tin-plates came chibfly from the Malin- griffith Works, owned by Mr Richard Blakemore, and about 20,000 boxes were annually shipped. The consumption of coal at Dowlais Works, in the year 1826, Is said to have been 700 tons per day, and the salary of a Master Collier B200 per annum. The iron brought down to Cardiff by the Glamorgan Canal in the two years 1825 and 1826 amounted to the following quantities (in tons):— 1825. 1826. Smith 8,500 MrGrover 7,040 The Executors of the late Dr Griffith.. 4,338 Messrs James and Thomas 2,321 The Glass House Company.— 2,039 Small Freighters 646 Total 40,718 In the following year Mr Coffin's shipments bad very greatly increased, he sending down in 1827 no less than 23,662 tons. The total sent down by all the freighters in 1827 was 56,117 tons. Concerning the exports of glass, it is to be t noted that Messrs Guest's trade was very large, their consignments being made to both home and American markets. Another town industry of importance was the Cardiff Foundry, which stood near where the Great Western Railway approach road now is, and which was removed to widen Penarth-road. Moggridge and Towgood were the proprietors afterwards, Mr Lisle. It employed a large number of persons, and concerning it we are in- formed that in 1828 it had "risen to considerable eminence, and the castings were considered equal to any in the kingdom." About 1827, Mr Tredwin opened the first dry dock in Cardiff. This is still in existence, beside the canal, being yet in use. S Iron (manufactured and unmanufactured), tin- plates, coal, and glass constituted a good general trade for the Cardiff of those days, the heavy goods being brought down by canal and shipped in the dock at the canal entrance. We are now entering upon the period when dock enterprise opened out the commercial resources of Cardiff. But enough has been said for this time. Later articles will deal with later years. We are starting, as already explained, at the extreme point of living memory; but material is scarce, the very few persons still with us having been too young then to take particular notice of public events and affairs. As later days are dealt with, the store of reminiscence is, of course, much larger; but readers will agree that much of interest lies in those old days of 1825 to 1835, when only the Canal Dock existed to furnish accommodation for trade. Nevertheless, even in that early period, the Cardiff man had faith in the port, and was distinguished for pluck and enterprise. The number of vessels which entered in 1831 was 1,934, and £ 137,170 was the value of the exports the population in that year numbered 6.187, and the Parliamentary repre. sentative was Lord James Stuart.

SUDDEN DEATH OF A CLERGYMAN. The Rev Canon Weldon Chaxmmeys, vicar of i Haslingden and Rural Dean of Whalley, Lanca- shire, died suddenly on Monday, from heart disease. He officiated at the service in the Parish Church on Sunday. Shortly after midnight he suddenly became very ill, and died before the doctor could attend. He was the eldest son of the late Very Rev William Weldon Champneys, Dean of Lichfield, formerly Canon of St. Paul's, and vicar of St. Pancras, and was born in 1839, at Whitechapel, of which parish his father was then rector. He was educated at Charterhouse School and Brasenose College, Oxford, taking his M. A. degree in 1864, For two years he was secretary of the Oxford University Boat .CJub, and rowed in the winning crew at Putney m lool,

FATALITY AT LLANGADOCK. A arentleman farmer named Davies (74), of Maerdy Taliaris, Llandile, Carmmrthlaishire, went from home by the LlandiJo tram, on Mon- day morning. He alighted at Llangadock to go to town, and when going level crossing, for there is no bridge at.? a1 .Place, he was literally cut into pieces by the l'&o down train The head (which had been quartered), legs, and the trunk of the unfortunate man were collected together by the horrified railway employees and dassengers.

SOUTH WALES NEWS. CARDIFF. PILOTAGE Bo-& .-The ordinary monthly meeting of the Cardiff Pilotage Board was held at the Offices, Stuart-street, on Tues- day morning. The chair e was occupiod by Mr J. H. Wilson, and there were also present Captain Pomeroy, Captain Pen- gelley, Councillor W. J. Trounce, Mr E. Handcock, jun., Mr Valentine Trayes, and Mr Jones (Messrs Evan Jones and Co.), who took his seat as the new member representing the shipping interest. The meeting was a very pro- tracted one, but the business transacted was of a routine character and not of public interest. THE SEAMEN'S UNION.—Tae meeting for the discussion of procedure in opposing the recent attempt to lower the wages from the port of Car- diff, which was announced for Monday evening, was late in the day postponed until Tuesday. Shortly after three o'clock the members of the Union will assemble near the Shipping Office and march to the Sailors' Home (Pelican Club), where addr?sses will be delivered by leading Trade U nionwts and a programme of action drafted. SWANSEA. "SOME WELSH POETS." -On Tuesday evening the members of the Swansea Cymmrodorion Society took possession of their new quarters in the Free Library, when Dr. John Evans occupied the chair and introduced Dr. Morgan (Lleurwg), of Llanellv, who had undertaken to lecture on "Some Welsh Poets." Dr. Morgan dealt at length with the office and importance of the poet in different ages and nations, the part he played in the formation of literature, and his influence on morals. He then took a bird's eye view of Welsh poetry, dividing it into four periods. The first introduced Aneurin, Taliesm, Llywarch Hen, and others; the second-from 1080 to 1550- introduced Casnodyn's epitaph on Prince Madawg; the third to 1650, giving birth to Dafydd ap Gwilym, whose tone the lecturer severely criticised, and described it as the period of frivolous and light poetry. The fourth brought the audience dewn to date, which the lecturer e' w regarded as by far the most important and prolific in poets and poetry, and illustrated by examples fFom Goronwy Owain, Thos. Edwards, and Robert IW illivus. At the close the lecturer was heartily thanked, and before the meeting separated a vote of condolence with the family of the late Athan Fardd was passed, while sympathy was expressed with the Rev Dr Saunders and Preswylydd y Garreg, who lie seriously ill. THK WIDENING OF CASTLE BAILKY-STREKT. — Thanks to the enterprise and local patriotism of Mr B. Evans, the owner of most of the property, there is now a substantial prospect of that dangerously narrow channel in the heart of the town, through which most of the traffic passes, being widened and made a credit to the town. The proposal has been under consideration for years, and now Mr Evans offers to solve the difficulties in the way by offering to do all the work himself. This offer was under the consideration of the General Purposes Committee on Wednesday, and it was decided to recommend that an offer be made to Mr Evans of a sum decided on if he will carry out the improvement himself at the price agreed on. This will mean a considerable sacrifice to Mr Evans, but we understand that rather than a necessary improvement shall be longer deferred he will in the interest of the town accept the offer if it is confirmed by the Council, as there is every reason to believe it gladly and thankfully will be. NEWPORT. A LARGE CARGO.—The Norwegian steamer Hermann Wedel Jarleberg was docked in the Alexandra. Docks, on Tuesday, with 4,500 tons of iron ore, consigned to the Blaina and Pyle Steel Manufacturing Company. This is one of the largest, if not the largest, single cargo of iron ore which has ever been brought to Newport. MONMOUTHSHIRE CLUB'S NEW PREMISES.—The now premises of the Monmouthshire Club, in Tredegar-plaoo, were opened on Tuesday after- noon. The President (Mr E. W. Willey) made a few appropriate remarks to the large company present, and a tour of the rooms was afterwards made. A flight of granite steps lead to the billiard-rooir., card-room, and reading- room. These are all fitted up in the best style. Upstairs, on the second floor, are the tea rooms, luncheon hall, and suite of rooms for the care- taker. On the wall of the reading-room is hung a portrait of the late Mr E. J. Grice, the founder of the club. BRIDGEND. PRESENTATION.—On Saturday evening, Mr C. C. Vivian, formerly of this town, was pre- sented with a handsome testimonial, which had been subscribed for by many personal friends, whose acquaintance he had made while actins as cahier at the National Bank of Wales, Bridgend. He had held that office for about seven years, and was recently promoted to the company's bank at Swansea. Ihe testimonial consisted of a travelling bag and complete dressing case and a cheque. Mr Wm. Thorne, of Thorncroftdown Villa, made the presentation on behalf of the subscribers. i CARMARTHEN. THE SHEBEKNING AS TBKLECR.—At the county petty sessions on Saturday—before Mr C. W. J ones, the Rev R. G. Lawrence, and Mr J. H. Thomas—the 12 people who were found on the premises of. Mrs Mafgaret IWes- who ou the previous Saturday was fined eiS and costs for selling intoxicating liquor at Duffryn Stores, Tre- lech, without a licence—were charged with aid- ing and abetting by buying the drinks in ques- tion. Mr H. Brunei Whise prosecuted, and Mr James John defended. Mrs Ann Evans and Mrs Phillips, who, he said, had the rum which they drank given to them. All the defendants, with the excepton of the above-named and Miss Hannah Morris and Mr D. Thomas pleaded guilty. In the result the charge against a lad was withdrawn, and the other defendants were fint-d;Cl pooh and costs. THE ORGANIST OX ST PETER'S.—Mr C. Videon Harding, the accomplished organist of St Peter's, lies seriously ill at his residence, The Parade. BOBOOGH QUARTER SWBIOxs.-At the Shire- hall on Monday, Mr E. H. Morris, deputy-clerk of the peace, informed the Grand Jury that there were no prisoners to be tried before the Recorder, Mr Arthur Lewis, on whose behalf the ex-Mayor (Mr Thomas Davies, Albion House) adjourned the borough quarter sessions to the 27th July. MR C. VIDEON HARKING.—A movement is on foot to raise a fund for the benefit of Mr C. Videon Harding, the famous Carmarthen tenor, who is now in failing health. THE DEATH RATE OF THE DISTRICT.—Accord- ing to information just received, the number of deaths during the past quarter is 121, the highest that has been placed on record for this district since the appointment, 15 years ago. of the present registrar, Mr G. Morgan, Albert House. THE CLERK OF THE PEACE.—Mr John Hoyes Barker, clerk of the peace for the borough, has gone abroad to recruit his health. HAVERFORDWEST. BREACHES OF THE WEIGHTS AND MEASURES AcT.-At the Roose petty sessions, held at the Shire-hall, Haverfordwest, on Saturday, Mr Joseph Richards, Inspector of Weights and Measures for the county of Pembroke, charged several shopkeepers living in Langwm for using unjust scales and weights.—In once instance a machine scales for weighing sacks of flour was found to be 7%lbs against the purchaser. The weights were also deficient. -The Bench imposed fines of 103 and costs. NAVIGATION. DEATH IN A FIT.—A man namiod Richard Hy. Pugh, 37 years of age, was found lying on his face dead in bed on Saturday morning. Deceased had been for years suffering from epileptic fits, and it is supposed that he was thus seized in bed, and was suffocated. PENRHIWCEIBER. Bftdey, who was on duty in ,t Water-street, discovered the photographic stndio of Mr A. P. Ross to be on fire. The studio, which was constructed of wood and corrugated iron, was situate in the Cattle Market. The fire brigade were soon on the spot, but the studio was burnt completely down, as was also van and some swings belonging to Mr North. Had it had been for the efforts of the .brigade the adjoining shop of Mr J. E. David would bavo been destroyed. As it was the roof was considerably damaged. TREDEGAR. COLLIERY ACCIDENT- Rees Owen Jones (•hacklerj, aired 16, employed at the Lady Windsor Colliery, met with a sad accident on Monday evening. While attempting to jump on to a journey of full trams, which were being hauled to the pit's bottom by means of the main and tail rope system, he fell, and three or four of the trams passed over his right leg, smashing it beyond recognition. Dr Morgan (with bis assistant, Dr M'Recbie) was obliged to amputate the limb a few inches above the knee. LLANGADOCK. THE FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.—An inquest was held at Llangadock Station on Tuesday— before the Coroner, Mr R. Shipley Lewis—into ¡' tho circumstances attending the death of Mr David Davies, Mardy Farm, Talley, who was I killed on Monday. Evidence was given by several witnesses, including Mr John Allen, the stationmaster, from which it appeared that de- ceased was trying to cross from one platform to another when he was knocked down by a Swansea train. The deceased was dragged a distance of five yards. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and recommended that a bridge should be erected over the line. PORTH. find that Mr Joshua Morgan, Porth, an ironmonger, and a leading Baptist, has just presented the English Calvin- istic Methodists at Porth with a magnificent sat of communion service worth nearly £10. BRECON. TOWN COUNCIL.—The quarterly meeting of this body was held at the Guildhall on Wednesday, with Alderman Wilham de Winton presiding.— Tho finance clerk submitted an estimate showing that a borough rate of 5d in the £ would be necessary for the half-year ending November next. The total expenditure was estimated at £708 10s lOd (including: £30 for municipal elec- tions), and the receipts £290 7s 4d. leaving a deficiency of £418 3s 6d to be provided for by a borough rate.—The 5d rate, which will raise £460 4s 7d, was adopted. The rate was %d less than that for the correspond- ing period of last year. — Alderman Thomas Williams said he remembered the time when a rat<: of 4d or 4d was sufficient for the year, but now he was sorry to say it had risen to about lOd. This was due to the heavy precept from the School Board, and be supposed there was nothing to do but to face the inevitable.—A letter was read from the Town Clerk of Cardiff respecting the postal facilities between South Wales and London.—Dr James Williams thought the Cardiff scheme would be of no advantage to Brecon. He suggested as an alternative that the directors of the Cambrian Railway be approached with a view of inducing them to run a mail train about an hour and a half later iu the evening—a train which would catch the London and North- western train at Builth-road.—The question was referred to a committee.—The Medical Officer (Dr Whyte) reported the town generally to be in a healthy condition, and that there were ten deaths and eight births during the month of April. LLANELLYc SUDDEN DEATH—It is with deap regret that we announce the sudden and unexpected death, after only a few days' illness, of Mr John Thomas, Medelvyw Farm, Felinfoel. The de- oeased was a guardian for the We?tfa hamlet of the parish of Llanelly, and was universally esteemed for his praiseworthy efforts in alleviating the distress of the poor and oppressed. He was a member of the Baptist Church at Felinfoel, and represented thedistricfc in the;East Carmarthenshire Liberal Association. He leaves a widow and six children to mourn his irreparable loss. It is a. singular coincidence that his mother died only three weeks ago on the same day of the week. ABERDARE. CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB.—The new building3 to be erected at the corner of Canon and High- streets will cost abont £4,500. In addition to the ordinary club-rooms, there will be a theatre capable of seating 500 or 600 persons, three shops, &c. Mr T. C. Wakelin, Merthyr, is the architect, and tenders for the erection of the structure will be issued shortly. PEMBROKE DOCK. VISIT OF DR. STEPHENSON.—The President of the Wesleyan Conference preached in Wesley Chapel on Monday afternoon to a large congre- gation. In the evening Dr. Stephenson, together with the circuit members, addressed a public meeting in the same place. On Sunday morning and evening the Rev J. Smith-Spencer, Man- chester (ex-president of the South African Con- ference), preached to large congregations. The services were on behalf of a scheme-for the renovation of Wes[ey Chapel. CARDIGAN. VACCINATION.—At the borough petty-sessions on Monday—before Mr T. E. Davies—Mr John Sharpe (Borough Surveyor) and Mr Thomas Bate- man (ironmonger) were summoned by Mr D. R. Bayiies, vaccination officer, for neglecting to vaccinate their children. The plea put in was that they had a conscientious objection to their children being vaccinated, and, as the question was now before a Royal Commission, they asked that no order be made until the report was published.^—An order to vaccinate within six months was made. MORRISTON. EISTEDDFOD. — An eisteddfod in connection with the Loyal T. H. Griffiths Lodge of Odd- fellows was held at the Tabernacle Schoolroom on Saturday evening. Mr T. Jeremiah Davies (Clyngollen) presided. The adjudicators were :— Music, Mr J. Roberts, Bethel, Llansamlet; literature, Mr D. Davies, BreaUog, Morriston conductor, Mr R. The chief literary prize, viz., a treatise on "Legends of Wales," was won by Mr John Phillips, Springfield-terrace, Morriston. The poetry prize was carried off by Mr J. S. Davies (Eiler Mai), Bircbgrove. MERTHYR. THE CYFARTHFA BAND CONCERT.—The con- cert given on Tuesday night, at the Drill-hall, by the Cyfarthfa Band, in aid of the Merthyr General Hospital, was very largely attended and was a decided success. We may at once compli- ment the band and the able conductor, Mr G. F. Liysey, upon the remarkably efficient manner in which they performed several selections of dis- tinctive character. Mr W. H. Phillips, the bass vocalist, was unable to attend through illness, but the other special artistes acquitted themselves with much effectiveness. Miss Maggie Moses, R.A.M., soprano, singing several songs which ensured her the marked approval of the audience; and Mr Theodore Carrington, in his inimitable violin solos, being received very enthusiastically. Neither should we forget to note the able euphonium solo of Mr H. Protberoe, and the very skilful pianoforte solo of Miss Carrie Jones, a pupil of Mr Edward Lawrence, the able accompanist (who kindly gave his services free for the occasion). PONTYPRIDD. Reece, coroner, held an inquest at the Bonvil- stone Hotel, Coedpenrcaen, on the body of the barman, Christopher Haslam, Maenammana, 50 years of age, who was found dead in bed by the landlord, Mr J. Seiler, on Friday morning last. Dr Jonkins, Pontypridd, attributed death to a sudden failure of the heart's action, and a verdict to that offect was returned. DROWNING OF A CHILD.—An inquest was held on Saturday at the Bonvilstone Hotel, Coedpen- maen, on the body of a lad, three years of age, the son of Mr A. J. Richards, lampman, 95, Coedpenmaen-road. Deceased was found drowned in the Glamorgan Canal by the Coedpenmaen lock-keeper on Friday. A verdict of Acci- dentally drowned was returned. BOARD OF GUARDIANS.—At the fortnightly meeting of this Board on Wednesday, Mr Evan John presiding, Miss Jones, of Pontypridd, was appointed a matron at the Children's Cottage Home, Llantwit.—Mr E. H. Davies gave notice of motion to rescind the resolution to erect a residence for the master. MOUNTAIN ASH. LOCAL BOARD.—This Board met on Monday, Mr W. Little in the chair.—On the motion of Mr Thomas Jones, seconded by Mr Thomas Edmunds, Mr W. James W3.b elected member of the Board in place of the late Mr 1.,1. Llewelyn.— It transpired that the collector, Mr LL Edwards, had resigned his post, and it was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr J. W. Jones, that a successor to him be advertised for at a salary of £225 per annum.—Mr Beasley, of tho Taff Vale, had written stating that the directors bad decided to cover the exit from the station.—The manager of the London and Pro- vincial Bank, who is treasurer of the Board, bad written that the branch at Monntain Ash would henceforth be opened on Saturdays.—The Medical Officer reported that seven fresh cases of scarlet fever had occurred in the district during the past fortnight, and two cases of typhoid fever. ABERGAVENNY. THE LAW OF THE ROAD.—On Monday, at the county-court, William Williams sued William Biggs for J650, the value of a horse which had died from an accident which plaintiff alleged bad been caused by defendant.—Mr T. Gwynne Powell appeared for the plaintiff and Mr Frederick Gardner for the defendant. Both par- ties are fanners and live near Abergavenny.— Judgment was given for the amount claimed and costs. ABERCARN. COLLIERY ACCIDENT.—A rather serious accident occurred at five o'clock on Monday afternoon at Celynen Colliery, Abercarne, by which two young men, Lewis and White, sustained serious injuries. The day men were waiting at the bottom of the pit to ascend, when suddenly a train of loaded trams coming to the bottom at a quick rate left tho rails. All but the two named, who were badly crushed, managed to yet clear. LOCAL BOARD ISLECWON.—The name of Mr G. H. Nurse, Abercarn, was omitted from the list of withdrawals published in our issue of Monday. RISCA. RATEPAYERS' MEETING. — A public meeting of ratepayers was held a Risca on Tues- day night to consider the advisability of opposing the present Water and Gas Bill now before Parliament.—Mr Aid. Jacob stated that it was important that the Local Board be em- powered to go to Parliament to oppose the Bit!. There were several matters which should be brought to the attention of Parliament, namely, tbe purity of the illuminating power, the desirability of having a gas-tester, and the ques- tion of a continuous supply of water.—Mr Jamee, the chairman of the Board, stated that he had no particular objection to the proposed opposition, but he should like to point out that the Gas Company had only had the works about 18 months, and during that time no effort nor expense had been spared to give a good gas supply. The gas consumers generally expressed themselves thoroughly satisfied with the purity of the gas. The company had ordered a gas tester some six or seven weeks, therefore it was not necessary to go to Parliament for that. With regard to the continuous supply of water it would be to the best interest of the Water Com- pany to keep up a continuous supply, otherwise it would mean a large amount of capital lying idle. A resolution was eventually passed to support the action of the Board. TENBY. HULTS. OF THE TOWN.—At a meeting of tbe Town Council on Wednesday, tbe medical officer, Dr. Lock, submitted a most gratifying report as to the condition of the town. The health of Tenby and the surrounding district is, says Dr. Lock, excellent—in fact, it was never better. This authoritative statement is eminently satisfactory, and will no doubt furnish many visitors with a sound argument for prolonging their stay. PENMARK. THE FATAL ACCIDENT TO A BUTCHER.—At the Six Bells Inn, Penmark, on Wednesday, Mr E. B. Reece, district coroner, held an inquest touching the death of William Watts, a local farmer and butcher, who met with an accident the previous Saturday week by f; l ling out of his trap while driving home through Porthkerry Park, under circumstances already reported.— After hearing the evidence of several witnesses, the jury returned a verdict of Accidental death." EBBW VALE. BAZAAR.—On Wednesday Lord Tradegar opened a bazaar in the new Iron Mission Church, Newtown, in the parish of St. John's, Beaufort, in aid of the church extension fund. The room was tastefully decorated with flags, etc. Six stalls were well filled with useful and ornamental articles. Amongst those present were Lord Tredegar, C. B. Holland, J.P., W. H. Meredyth, Alderman W. H. Powell, &c.—His Lordship, in a brief speech, declared the bazaar opened.—The Vicar (Rev D. J. Llewelyn) proposed a vote of thanks to Lord Tredegar, which was seconded by Mr W. H. Meredyth.—The stallholders were Mrs C. B. Holland, Miss Mary Powell, Miss Esther Powell, Mrs T. Morgan, Mrs D. B. Evans, Mrs D. J. Llewelyn, viearage. Secretaries, Mr Thomas Morgan and Mr Geo. Parry. CHEPSTOW. EARLY CLOSING.—A meeting of the tradesmen of the town, convened by the Early Closing Com- mittee, was held at the Bank-buildings on Tues- day evening. It was unanimously decided to close the shops in the town at seven o'clock, instead of eight, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thurs- day in each week, in addition to the Wednesday half-holiday at one o'clock the new order of things to come into operation from the 15th August next. LLANDAFF. HIGHWAY BOARD.—At Wednesday's meeting of this Board Mr R. Forrest was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year, and Mr Franklen G. Evjuis vice-chairman.

HORSEWHIPPING THE PONTY- PRIDD POSTMASTER. Proceedings at the Police-court. At the Pontypridd police court on Wednesday —before the stipendiary (Mr Ignatius Williams), Mr T. P. Jenkins, and Mr Ed. EdwarW-a case was heard in which Charles Brommage, an ex-postal clerk at Pontypridd, was summoned for having on tbe 4th instant violently assaulted Alfred James McMurray, postmaster, Ponty- pridd, by thrashing him in the public streets with a horsewhip. Mr Charles Mathews appeared to prosecute, and Mr H. W. Spowart (of the office of Messrs W. H. Morgan ana Rhys) defended. Considerable interest was manifested in the case, and the court was crowded. In opening tbe case Mr Mathews said that the complainant had been postmaster at Pontypridd for the last seventeen years, and had been in the postal service altogether for nearly forty years. On the previous Wednesday he was in conversa- tion with a friend just in front of the police- court, and, as he was afterwards proceeding on bis way, he was suddenly seized from behind and grossly attacked. Evidence would be called to show the gross nature of the assault, and how Mr McMurray deported himself during the castiga- tion. A. J. McMurray, the complainant, said he was postmaster at Pontypridd. For some time past he had been suffering from serious illness, and was still under medical treatment. Last Wed- nesday, as he was proceeding to the office, past the police-station, he was suddenly struck from behind with the thonjj of a horgeyrhip. He was struck al together a dozen or fourteen times. The thong cut him about the face. He put up his hand to protect himself, with the result that bis hand was cut th four pfa6es. As soon as he could turn round he saw it was the defendant. He had no idea who was his assailant until he turned round, and he shouted for help. He had been suffering from prostration, and this attack had made him a great deal worse. Defendant called out, This is McMurray McMurray, the postmaster, a d scamp, the d 1 scamp in Pontypndd." Defendant was an appointed clerk in the telegraph and sorting department, and in December last he sent in his resignation. He held the resignation back for some days, but not re- ceiving any communication from the defendant he forwarded the notice. He was afraid of de- fendant. Cross-examined hy Mr Spowart, witness denied that before he resigned the defendant complained to him that he had been missing money from his drawer. It was not a fact that Brommage, owing to missing money from his drawer, could not balance his accounts, and could not square his cash, had been asked to resign. Mr Spowart: I put it to you, sir, that you suggested to this man, because of his relationship with you.—He is no relation of mine. A relation of yonr wife, then ?—Second cousin. Is it not a fact that on account of this distant relationship you suggested that instead of his being reported to London he should send in his resignation to you ?—No. Some time before the day of assault was there an inquiry at the poet-office into certain alleged irregularities ?—There was. This is what I don't wish to give in open court, because it will damage Brommage if I do. The Stipendiary I don't think you ought to state anything that took place between you and l the department. That is a privileged communi- cation. Mr Spowart: At this inquiry did Brommage give evidence against you ?—Witness I do not know. I was not there. The Stipendiary: That would rather be a rea- son for McMurray thrashing Brommage. Mr Spowart: Did you not tell Mrs Brommage that you would do everything in your power to ruin the defendant ?—No, never. That is the biggest lie ever uttered. Did you not ask his wife why she continued to live with such a man ?—No; certainly not. On tbe day before the assault you sent this letter to Brommage's employer :— Post Office, Pontypridd, 3rd May, 1892. Dear Sir,—Some time since, when Mr Charles Brom- maee was in my employ, I gave him a testimonial as to character, but he having since left the service of the Post Office I now wish to cancel it—Yours truly, A. J. MCMURRAY, Postmaster. Mr William Jenkins, New Sewage Works, Pontypridd. Witness: Yes, I sent that. Mr H. W. Spowart then addressed the magistrates for the defence. He would call no witnesses, he said, and would admit the assault; and the first word he desired to utter was to ex- press tbe defendant's extreme regret that heshould have acted as he did. The defendant held himself to have been deeply wronged by the complainant, He had been for three months out of employment, and when at last he secured an appointment under Mr Jenkins there came this letter which, defen- dant naturally feared, would result in his dis- missal. It was under this provocation that he had thus rashly acted. The Stipendiary said that the magistrates had taken into the fullest consideration defendant's expression of regret. None of them would be safe if they were liable to assaults of this sort for doing what the rules of society called upon them to do. People were being constantly asked for characters for employees and servants, and, aa between man and man, it was their duty to do so. Mr McMurray had given the defendant a testi- monial eight months ago, and this testimonial was in defendant's possession to be used by him at all times as Mr McMurray's opinion of Mr Brom- mage. The complainant heard that some few days before defendant had obtained a situation, and thereupon assumed that the appointment was secured by defendant by the use of the testimonial complainant had given him eight months before, and which Mr McMurray thought now required some amount of qualification. Mr McMurray then wrote to Mr Jenkins that he desired to withdraw that character. Now. any man receiving such an intimation as that should have communicated with Mr McMurray to find out why he did not wish the character to be a subsisting character. Whatever might have been tbe result of it he felt that Mr McMurray had fully justified his position as an employer of labour by conveying to the person intending to employ one of his late employees the real facts known to him, aud if Mr Jenkins had made inquiries he would have been satisfied, probably; and Mr Brommage would have remained in his service. Instead of that Mr Jenkins, contrary to the practice certainly as between gentlemen, handed over the letter to Mr Brommage. and this attack was the result. The magistrates had been Considering whether it was not their duty to send the defendant to prison for the full term of two months without the option of a fiae; but they had considered the apology that he had made, and decided, instead of sending him to prison, to fine him J35. That was the limit of their discre- f tion. He would also have to find two sureties of l £50 each that he would keep the peace, and would be detained in custody until the sureties were found. Mr Mathews, at Mr McMurray's request, urged tbe bench to reduce the amount of the jsureties, but this their worships declined. sureties, but this their worships declined. Subsequently Mr W. Jenkins, Brommage's present employer, appeared in court and ex- plained to the stipendiary that he had never seen Mr McMurray's letter, and, in fact, did not know of its existence until that afternoon.—The Stipendiary Then I am very sorry I made any remarks about yon, because they were, under the circumstances, inappropriate. I was informed, or at least I assumed, that you had seen the letter, and bad handed it over to Mr Brommara.

THE POLICE COURTS. The Cardiff Publican's Constitutional. At Newport county police-court, on haturday, Patrick Bryan, coal trimmer, and Honora Bryan, his wife, Cardiff residents, were summoned for assaulting Patrick Barry. Tht complainant is a publican, carrying on business in Cardiff, and on Sunday afternoon decided on a drive to Newport, taking with him the defendants, his sister and brotbsr-in-law, and one or two other friends, sufficient to fill the four-wheeler driven by Charles Reece. On the homeward journey, near St Mellons, the principal occupants ¡ being aU in drink, a row arose, the male defen- dant, it being alleged, having got up and chal- lenged complainant that although be gave him two black eyes twelve years ago he could not do so now. The cabman, iinding his vehicle in dan- ger cl being smashed, promptly got down and got the occupants into the road to settle their differences, afterwards reassorting the box passengers and getting them home without further hitch.—The Bench suggested that the party consisted of famous bona fide travellers but Mr Lyndon Moore, for complainant, pointed out that his client kept a public-house, and cculd get at the tap any time. They were out for a constitutional, he imagined.—Inspector Williams described how ihe summons was served, and how Mrs Bryan ran across to com- plainant, struck the pipe out of his mouth, and dashed the summonses at him.—The defence was that the Bryans were invited for the dnve, and that the complainant was the aggressor. Mrs Bryan's face was badly disfigured.—The Bench fined defendants 20s each, and bound them and complainant over to keep the peace. A Lively Affray at Penylan, At Newport county police-court on Saturday James Williams, William Williams, George Gillon, men employed at Nettlefolds Works, Rogerstone, and Lewis Jerman, employed on the Brecon and Merthyr Railway, were summoned for assaulting Morris Roberts and Wm. Roberts, at Bassaleg and on a cross summons the two complainants were accused of assaulting the two Williamses. The complainant, Morris Roberts, is an undcr-gamekeeper in the employ of Lord Tredegar, and resides with his wife and brother at Penylan. About 10 o'clock on Sunday evening last Morris Roberts went to a well at a little distance to obtain water, and saw a knot of men, with a small white terrier, going along the road. They saluted him with Good night, boss," and a few moments afterwards began, in pure wantonness, too throw stones at Roberts's dog, which was chained up. They kicked the garden gate, and afterwards un- hinged it. Mrs Roberts, hearing the noise, went out with her infant in arms aid remonstrated with the men, who gave for answer half a brick, hurled at her. Complainant awakened bis brother William, who had gone to bod, and they set off to find P.C. Pettitt. They overtook the gang of six men, and one of the Williamses asked them where they were going. Morris Roberts asked whether they had made the row about his bouse, and both the Williamses struck him at the same moment, cot him down, and were kicking him, when his brother interfered for bis protection. Both got so badly treated that they turned and ran, but were pursued, and again overtaken and be- laboured. Evidences of the fray were found in broken walking sticks (produced in court), and that nearly all the actors had their heads still bandaged.—Mr Lyndon Moore was for com- plainants, and Mr Davict barrister, for the defence. The Bench held that it was doubtful who struck the first blow, and bound all the parties over to keep the peace and to pay their own costs. The hearing of the case occupied three hours and a half. Alleged Cruelty to Children at Newport. At Newport police-court on Monday, James Cavill, i ronworker and butcher, 10, Barnard-street, Newport, was summoned under the Prevention of Cruelty to Children Act, for wilfully ill-treating and neglecting his children, Ada Louisa, Olive, Maud, and James, all under 16 years of age. —Mr G. H. Llewellyn prosecuted on behalf of the Na- tional Society, and Mr D. R. Evans defended.— Defendant lost his wife in June last, and since then his six motherless children had, it was alleged, been utterly neglected and illtreated. The children were paraded in court for the inspection of the magistrates, and they looked well-cared for, and, with the ex- ception of a slight bruise on one of the girl's cheek, hearty and well.—"Yes," observed Mr Llewellyn, in reply to the Bench's surprised looks, this is the transformation scene, got up for the occasion.The Mayor had Olive put into the witness-box, and she said her father never beat her, nor the other children. Ada stayed out one night because her father was going to whip h«r and slept under the sofa another night. She got the blow herself under the table !—The Mayor: Who told you to tell us that ?—Olive No one.—The Mayor (in- credulously) Eh ?—Olive Nobody.—The de- fendant also gave evidence, and declared that Ada was untruthful and Eliza Moule, married, neighbour, said she went into defendant's house half a dozen times a day, and that the children were kept in a proper condition. She had been washing for the children for a month.— The dismissed the ease, but cautioned the de-* e ad ant. A Dangerous Lark." At Ysfcrsd on MoBdwy— before MrL Williams and Mr T. P. Jenkins-Llewellyn Richards, watchmaker, residing at Tynewydd, was chained with obtaining 2s 6d by false pretences from Dr Owen, assistant to Dr Warburton. Treherbert. It appeared from the evidence that the parties met at the Castle Hotel in the locality one evening last week and the prisoner offered to the prosecu- tor a "spade guinea" for half a guinea, the former stating that he was hard up. Preseootor accepted the offer, and having received the "spade metal" dbposited 2s 6d on account, pro- mising to pay the remainder in a day or two. On tho following day the prosecutor tested the "spade guinea" by means of a certain liquid and discovered that the metal was a piece of gilded tin. Prisoner observed in defence that be com- mitted the alleged offence for a lark. Prosecutor expressed a wish not to press the charge, and the magistrates considering that a jury would not convict, dismissed the case. Claim Against a Workman. At Merthyr on Monday—before Mr W. Smyth and Dr Webster—Peter Traynor, stoker, was summoned for leaving his work at the boilers of Messrs Nixon, Merthyr Vale, on the night of the 2nd inst. (Mabon's Day) without giving notice. JS5 damages were claimed.—Mr Sydney Simons appeared the absence of his father) for com- plaimints, and Mr W. Beddoe for the defendant. —Defendant, it seemed, objected to a man named Elias Davies being put on as a stoker and feeder on the night in question, and because he thought it was dangerous for one man to undertake the double duty he left his work.—The Bench assessed the damage at 20s and costs (25s in all). Breach of the Merchant Shipping Act. At Penarth police-court on Monday—before Col. Guthrie, Mr T. R. Thompson, and Mr F. W. G. Gore—George M. Davis, described as a runner, of Barry Dock, was summoned at the instance of the Board of Trade for two breaches of the Merchant Shiuping Act, 1854. Mr Ivor Vachell (Ingledew and V achen), who prosecuted, said that defendant bad scone aboard the ss. Winnie while she was lying at Barry Dock on the 8th of February last, and endeavoured to persuade some of the seamen to board with him, the vessel not then having been docked 24 hours.—Defendant pleaded guilty, and urged his poor circumstances in mitigation.—Mr Vachell said he was not instructed to press for a heavy penalty, and the Bench fined defendant 5J for one offence and 10s for the other. Destitute and Desperate. John Morris, 63, a stranger to Cardiff, who at Monday's court refused to give any account of himself, was brought up in custody on Tuesday —before the Stipendiary (Mr T. W. Lewis) —to answer a charge of wilfully break ing a plate-glass window, value J37 5s, at No. 16, St. Mary-street, on the 7th inst., the property of Henry Byron Crouch.—Inspector William James proved the charge.—In reply to the Stipendiary prisoner said that he was miser- able. He was a native of Dublin, but had not seen his home for many a long day. The best part of his life he had spent in iron works in the north of England, but he was now nearly too old to do a. hard day's work. He could not say how he came to break the window. It was done wilfully. He was hungry and footsore, and something made him break the window. He was, as the officer bad said, perfectly sober. He was net a tramp, and the only time he had any- thing to d., with workhouses was at Cardiff, where he spent a night in the casual ward. On his promising not to again offend be was bonnd over in £5 to be of good behaviour for six months. Watch Stealing at Cardiff. Edward Savage (30), of 137, Wellington-street, was charged on remand at Cardiff police-court on Tuesday—Mr T. W, Lewis being on the bench—with stealing on Saturday night last a silver lever watch, value five guineas, from the shop of Mr John Ingram, jeweller, of 32, High- street.—Dr Evans, of Canton, stated that be had attended the prisoner about three months -ago for paralysis. Since this illness he had been very childish at times. He had delusions still, having told witness in the cells that his wife was lying dead in the next apartment, and that the reason why he took the watch was "because the devil told him to take it." In his opinion prisoner was not able to appreciate the difference between right and wrong. His friends were, he thought, well able to look after him.—The Stipendiary ordered that he be handed over to the Union authorities, Dr Evans promising to see Mr Pritcbard in the matter. Assaulting a Constable at Cardiff. At Cardiff on Tuesday—before Mr T. W. Lewis—Charles Crowley, 42, was charged with being drunk, disorderly, and causing obstruction, and also with assaulting P.C. Cook by kicking him, in Bute-street, on the 9th ÏWltant.-Fined £3 or one month's imprisonment in default of payment.—John Kelly, for assaulting P.C. Evans (112), was sent to two months' im- prisonment without the option of a fine, he having been previously convicted for a similar offence. Licensing Offences at Caerphilly. At Caerphilly police-court, on Tuesday—before Messrs D. Llewelyn, F. G. Evans, H. Anthony, E. Edwards, R. Jenkins, and Captain Lindsay— Edward Hodges, landlord of the Angel Inn, near Caerphilly, was charged with selling beer during prohibited hours, on Sunday, May 1st. P.C.'s Webber and Jones proved the case. Fined J31 and costs.—Fred Sutton and Owen Jones were each fined Is and costs for being on the above premises on the day mentioned.—Fred Warren, a navvy, reading a&JUwr UK Caerphilly, was charged with keeping a shebeen at the above place, and selling beer without a licence, on Sunday, May 1st. P.C.'s Hurfbrd, Jones, and Webber entered the hut on the day ia question, and found an 18-gallon cask of beer on tap, with 12 men drinking. The case was proved and defendant was fined £10 and costs, or one month's impirsonment. ud. Fodey and Jn White were also charged with aiding and abetting in the above offence, and were fined £1 and costs each. A Poaching Case. At the Pembroke police-court on Tues day — before Mr S. B. Sketch and other magistrates—Thomas McCrann, John Glass, and Robert Reader were charged with being found on a highway coming from land with game. The defendants were met by Sergeant Harte and two constables coming from the country at 4.20 a.m., with three nets and nine rabbits in their posses- sion. They were captured aftsr an exciting chase across gardens and bye-lanes.—McCrann was fined 40s and costs, ana in default committed for a month Reader paid a line of 20s and costs and Glass did not appear, and a warrant wag ordered to be issued. A Swansea Husband's Complaint. Among applicants for summonses at Swansea police-court on Wednesday was an elderly man, carrying a bundle of clothes, and when placed in the box, he asked for advice under the following circumstances :—It appears his wife had pawned all his and the children's clothes for drink, and after visiting two or three pawnshops in order to stop the procedure, he locked his boxes. The wife, however, broke them open and poured something" upon them which spoiled them. —The Magistrates' Clerk You can't prosecute a wife for that.—Applicant: Is there no protection against a woman of this sort?—The Magistrates' Clerk: The magistrates can do nothing for you. You took the woman for better or for wopse. Did she strike you or assault you?—Applicant No.— Magistrates' Clerk Then we can do nothing for you.—Applicant was therefore compelled to stand down and as he left the court he evidently waa displeased with his interview. A Newport Assault Case. At the Newport police-court, on Wednesday, Mrs Sarah Ann Cockbain appeared at the stance of George Adams, who is a sub-tenant of Mrs Cockbain's and carries on business as a tobacconist in Dock street, to answer a charge of assault. The assault, so Mr Ll. Phillips, solicitor, who ap- peared for Adams, told the Court, arose through a county-court case in which judgment was given against the defendant, and in favour of Adams. The complaint was that defendant was constantly annoying complainant, and saluted the customers who came to his shop with Get yer hair cut." This state of things culminated in a scene on Saturday last. when the parties had a bit of high talk," and exchanged blows with a wet floor- cloth.—Mr Baker Jones, solicitor for the defend- ant, sought to show on a cross-summons that Adams was tbe first cause of the bother, lia putting a sandwich board over her grating and throwing water from a window on to her back yard. The conclusion of the Court was six of one and half a dozen of the other,' and bound both parties over to keep the peace, and pay the costs between them. Whilst the magis- trates' clerk was repeating the usual formula, the old lady, who was rather deaf, gazed in the face of the clerk with a look of astonish- ment. The Bench She does not know what is going on," and Mr Baker Jones, with his face close to the old lady's ear, said, You will owe the Queen B10 if you break the peaca for three months." And Mrs Cockbain promised not to do anything to Mr Adams for that period. Serious Charge at Cardiff. At tbe Cardiff polioe-court on Wednesday— before the Stipendiary (Mr T. W. Lewis) and Dr Paine—a man named Thomas Cunningham, aged 37, was charged with indecently assaulting a little girl named Lizzie James, 14 years of age, on the Penarth-road, on the 9th inst.— The prisoner denied the charge and availed himself of the opportunity afforded by the Act ot Parlia- ment to give evidence in his own defence on oath to that effect. He was committed to take his trial at the Swansea Assizes, to be held in August next. Robberies from Newport Cemetery. At the Newport police-court on Wednesday, Ann Edwards, a widow woman oi. respectable appearance, residing in Graham-street, attended to explain why she had removed a glass shade and wreath from the grave of the late Mrs George Wilkms, relict of Mr Wilkins, contractor. One of the employees at the Newport Cemetery, saw the woman, accompanied by a little girl, go from grave to grave, and stopping at the grave ia question she picked up the shade and put a. handkerchief over it, and was walking away with it when she was stopped. Mr Newman, town clerk told the Bench that there had been a great number of complaints of thefts taking place at the cemetery, but they were very difficult to detect. The present was the first case of the kind brought before the Court.—The Bench told defendant the case was a serious one, but as it was her first con- viction she would be let off with a 20s fine, or a 14 days' alternative.

QTRAGIC DEATH OF A PRIEST. On Saturday afternoon a thief was notioed by two ladies tampering with the alms-box of St. Clare's CatbolicChurcn, Liverpool, when they raised an alarm, which brought on the scene the rector. Father Spencer. He at once gave chase, but had not run more than half a mile after the fellow when he dropped dead. The thief was subse- quently arrested. Much consternation WM caused in his church by the shockinsr announce- ment of the rector's death.
