Messrs Mastcrman, Peters, and Co., London .Messrs. Bailey and Co., Monmouth ¡I' at HE object contemplated by this Company is the working I an extensive field of coal, situate in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, containing, according to the award of the Dean Forest Mining Commissioners, 318 acres of coal, which are computed to contain 3,023,729 tons of excellent quality, suitable for steam purposes and domestic use. Two circumstances combine to render this undertaking one of great promise, and the return of a large per centage upon the capital employed a matter of certainty. 1st the comparatively small amount of capital re- quired for the purpose of bringing the works into ef- fectual operation, the proprieto-rs of the Colliery having consented to receive, in lieu of purchase-money, a small tonnage upon the coal actually worked so that the heavy outlay usually required in a similar instance, is here uncalled for. 2ndly,—The advantage to be derived from the cheap and rapid mode of conveyance which will be alforded by the South Wales and other Railways, as also the increased demand which must necessarily follow the opening of frefih markets, by their aid, in the vicinity of the < olliery, in connection with those of Bristol, Bridgwater, Gloucester, Cheltenham, Ireland, &c. Even when labouring under the disadvantages of bad roads and imperfeet transit, the Forest Collieries have yielded a fair re- munerating profit to those engaged therein. Much, more may reasonably be expected from an undertaking which will I combine the advantages of a cheaper and more rapid convey- ance which these railways will furnish, with the other favour- able circumstances above enumerated. The Estimates, after a most careful computation, enable the Committee to state that a dividend of at least 20 per cent. may be relied upon. STANDING COUNSEL— Charles Egan, Esq., Lincoln's Inn Soi.iciTORS—Potter and Collingbridge, Basinghall-stredt PAHI.UMK.\TAUY AGI.NIS™-Pariat aud Wulinsley, House of Lords StrRiiTAiiy Richard Wallace Smith THE Great Welsh Junction Railway presents to the capi- _L talist, the landholder, and the public, advantages which cannot be afforded by any other line. The promoters of this line 01 iginally intended simply toconstructaroad, which, taking its departure from Bangor, should ultimately find its terminus at Swansea with a view to combine in favour of the Principality, the Midland and Southern Lines. The rapid march of events, however, in the railway world has resulted in a material devia- tion from, and extension of, the views of the promoters. The rejection of the South Wales Railway, in its original form, forced upon the responsible parties in the Great Welsh Junction Railway Company the onus of extending their operations in South Wales, so as to give to that wealthy and energetic popula- lation an equal share of the advantages presented to the North and Centre cf Wales. This obligation is not lessened by the egregiously absurd project now entertained by the South Wales IlDe, of making a tunnel under the Severn, to obviate the difficul- ties created by the veto of the Lords of the Admiralty as to a bridge. The loss of time and inconvenience resulting from the use of a ferry, as proposed by another Company, are too obvious to require comment, and the promoters of the Great Welsh Junc- lion Railway Company are not disposed to insult the under- standing of the public by instituting a comparison between the facilities of crossing that river at the Aust, as suggested by a third company, and the erection of a suspension bridge at the Stone Bench, two miles from Gloucester, on the direct ltae from Swansea to London. Under these circumstances the promoters have deemed it to be their duty to adopt the greater portion ot the South Wales lines, so as to form one uniform system of railway, unequalled in the facility of construction, unexampled in the extent of its connec- tions. and presenting to the shareholders, and the public, advan- tages which it is not in the power of any other railway to hold forth. With reference to this state of things has the Great Welsh Junction Railway Company been formed, and it will be con. structed on the following plan :— The Great Wplsh Junction Railway takes a double departure from Bangor and Port Dyllnaen. It embraces in the make course of line (amongst other towns, too numerous to be men- tioned here) Carnarvon, Harlech, and Dolgelly Passing be- tween Dinas, Mowddy, and Pennant, it traverses Welsh Pool to Shrewsbury; leaving Shrewsbury, its skirts, Colebrook Dale, and the iron districts, and includes Ludlow, Leominster, Hereford, Ross, Monmouth, Merthyr Tydvil, Neath, Swansea, and Carmarthen, and finds its southern terminus at Pembroke. Several large and small branches are attached to this line, the most important of which are:—1. Welsh Pool, Montgo- mery, Newton, and Bishop's Castle, to Ludlow. 2. Ross and Gloucester. 3. Monmouth and Gloucester, crossing the Severn by a bridge at^the Stone Bench, two miles below that city, and joining the Bristol and Cheltenham Rail. 4. Monmouth and Chep,.tolV..5: Monmouth, Newport, and Cardiff". This line directly touches nine seaports, namely-Bangor, Port Dynllaen, Gloucester, Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff. Neath, Swansea, and Her Majesty's Dockyard, at Pembroke. It passes through upwards ot thirty large towns. To the slate-quarries of North Wales it presents an unlimited market. It furnishes a direct communication between North and South Wales, and every other part of the empire, by means of upwards ot twenty different railways, completed or pro- jected. The inexhaustible mineral wealth of the Principality will find, through this channel, a certain and profitable outlet; whilst the manufacturing energies of its population (witness Newton) will receive a fresh impetus from the proximity into which they will be brought with their best customers. It also furnishes the two nearest routes from Ireland to London, and an almost straight line of communication between the me- tropolis and Swansea. These unparalleled advantages will afford to the shareholders a dividend as yet unexampled iu railway annals. The company will be a narrow-guage company but, to avo.d the possibility of an effective opposition, it is intended so to construct the line aa to admit of an uninterrupted com- muniation with the broad guage lines, who will be permitted to use the roads and stations of the Great Welsh Junction Railway Company, with their own plants, paying a passenger and tonnage mileage. The line does not present any engineering difficulties of im- port; but power will be reserved to use the Atmospheric Prin- ciple, if deemed advisable, in certain portions of it. Essentially JD principle a narrow-guage line, communications have been opened by the promoters of the Great Welsh Junc- tion Railway Company with all the narrow-guage companies, for mutual support in maintaining the integrity of a guage forced upon the earlier lines by the Legislature. It is manifestly the interest of all the narrow-guage compa- nies to support the Great Welsh Junction Une, which alone presents the certain means of defeating the grasping views of the Great "vestern Company.
