At a social gathering of the members and friends of the Merthyr and Dowlais Philhar- monic Society, on Tnesday night, at the Merthyr Drill. Hall, presided over by the High Constable, Mr Harry Evans, the able conductor, was pre- sented on behalf of the society, by Mr B. H. Rees, Dowlais, with a handsOjoe canteen of silver (on every pieo6 of which Mr Evans's mooa- gram was engraved), as a souvenir of his success at Llanelly, and as a tribute of admiration.for. his great musical abilities. Mr Harry Evans, in returning thanks, referred to the. historic pro- minence of the society at Llanelly, and said be hoped they bad now disproved the idea of some people that choirs only combined for the sake of competitions. He trusted tbey would continue to give their best attention to the practices, and show as they had done in the past how a large body of ladies and gentlemen couki cultivate S wic for its own sake.

125 MILES AN HOUR. A Remarkable Electrical Railway. As the crowning culmination of three years of plodding persistence and the exDenditure of more than £100,000, German engineers Tuesday magnificently realised their ambition to propel an electric railway train at the unparalleled speed of 125 miles an hour. This epoch-marking feat (says the Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph") was accomplished under sunny skies, between 10 and 11 o'clock Tuesday morn- ing, upon the experimental MarienfeIde-Zoasen military track. With the use of what ia equivalent to 3.000-h.p., the pondetous electric speeding machine pounded its 92 tons of trucks, motors, and gearing over the I heavily reinforced road bed at the lightning velocity of 201 kilometres (125 62 miles) an hour, without so much as losing a rivet or a bolt. The track, with it9 tremendous 961b rails, resting upon rock-inbedded sleepers, also re- mained practically unscathed, although re- measurement will probably indicate that the rails have sprung an infinitesimal, harmless six mmimetroa. The record breaking car is the one built by Siernens-Halske Company, which at- tained 118 miles an hour 10 days ago. and is the twin of one constructed by the Allgemeine Electricitats Company, which will immediately attempt to emulate the triumph of the other. The trial track is a straightaway stretch of 14 miles, with moderate curves at either extremity. Upon either side of the station of Dahlwitz the track assumes a gradual down grade, and it was on the five kilometres of intermediate depression that the car attained its maximum speed. For the entire distance of 14 miles the speed. was maintained at the average rate of 109*37 miles 3>n hour, including starting and stopping. Upon the watchers ot its maddening flight at this point of highest velocity the car produced an almost indescribable sensation of mechanical might and power. Enveloped in a miniature whirlpool of cinders and snowy dust, it lunged paat with The Roar of a Niagara, the fearful vibrations of its metal parts giving forth an instantaneous crude crash of melody. Almost before the eye could comprehend its ap- ■ proach the car thundered by—a ba/y, indistin- gaiRhable, confusing, shimmering vision of wood. glass, brass, !vnd dust—and was lost to the naked sight as quickly as it had flashed upon it. Although 104ft. leng^at so tramendous a pace did it travel that a vehicle little larger thau an ordinary tramcar p hotographed itself upon the mind's eye, and a camera primed for the hun- dredtli of a second exposure caught only a long black streak. Unheimlich (ancanny) was the spontaneous and shuddering expression of a veteran major of infantry as the great electric juggernaut careered through space at its reckless gallop. As has alreadv been fully explained in the English technical Press, the car was propelled by the If three-phase alternating current sys- I tem of overhead trolleys extended from the roof at right angles to iron poles flanking the track. At intervals of 150ft. power was transmitted from the Allgemeine Electricitats Company's plant at Oberachonweide, eight miles distant. Fourteen thousand volts, minus one thousand lost in transmission, were delivered to the car, whose transformers reduced the voltage to the usable point of 350. < It should not be imagined that German en- gineers expect to run railway trains as a regular thing at the demon-like speed achieved to-day. The experiments were made merely to show the powers and limitations of the electrical equip- ment, wind resistance, &c., and they will now be turned to practical advantage for the railway of the future. It is believed that such a line will be capable of an average speed of 150 kilo- metres an hour t93 miles), and a definite project to that end,an express lineservice betweenBerlin and Hamburg, which has been afoot awaiting the development of these trials, will now be puehed towards completion.

DRAMATIC MURDER TRIAL.
DRAMATIC MURDER TRIAL. Extraordinary Scene in Court. On Tuesday the Elder-Dempster liner Soho arrived at Liverpool from West Africa. The Boho left Lagos on the 16th nit., when a white man named Oustav Lanvolanien, a Russian, had just been exeooted for the murder of Mr Henry Moore, chief officer of the British steamer Egga. Lanvolanien is stated to be the first white man hanged in West Africa within living memory. In fact, it is said that it would be neeeesary to go back to the old slave days to find any record of the execution of a white man. A German I and a Swede were charged wi«h Lauvolanien. The jarywas composed of seven white men and five blaeks. They retired to consider their verdict at 3 o'clock ia the afternoon, and did not return to court till 6.30. It was then quite dark, and the electric lights in the courtroom could not be turned on. The verdict was taken in the dark. The jury said they did not consider there was sufficient evidence against the German MELthe Swede to convict them, but Lanvolanien was found guilty. The two other prisoners 'were then withdrawn from the dock. On being asked if he had anything to aay why sentence of death shonld not be passed, prisoner, in a whining voice, said—"I appeal to Court in England." On the trudge saying there was no appeal to the Court in England, the voice was again heard. in the dacfeaess—" X appeal to Court here." There is no appeal here," said the Judge, who assumed the black cap. His Lordship was deliver- ing sentence when the electric light suddenly brilliantly lit up the Court, revealing the prisoner shivering and clinging to the sides of the dock for support. When sentence was delivered the DBisoner turned to the warder and inquired if they were going to hang him that night, and then asked for a priest. The execution was privately carried ont within the walls of tbeorison at Lagos. _0.

jf ■ j_ PUBLIC-HOUSE ALTERATIONS. A special Licensing Sessions was held a& Cardiff on Tuesday before the Mavor (Aldermaø Thomas), Councillor Beavan, and Robert Bird. After a number of transfers had been granted application was made by Mr A. F. Hill for sanction to proposed alterations W premises at 67 and 69, Nora.street, Roath, which have an off-licence. Mr Hill urged that the alterations in no way involved an extension of the premises, bat were intended merely for the greater convenience of those who came with bottles and jugs. The magistrates declined to sanction the proposed alterations. Permission was given to the landlord of the Rose and Crown, Millicent-street, to carry out some structural alterations at his house, the Chief Constable stating that they would facilitate police super- vision. Sanction was also given to minor altera tions at the Heath Hotel.
