WAR'S ANNIVERSARY. IO-DAV, Friday, August 4th, Great Britain, with her loyal Allies-France, Russia, Italy, and Serbia-enters upon the third year of warfare with Germany, Austria, Turkey and Bul- garia and the end is not yet in sight, nor can the military expert or The statesman of any of the combatant powers say when peace is likely to be declared. Lives are being sacrificed by the thousand and money is being expended by the million; the world's industry is being diverted to. the creation of destructive forces in- stead of the creation of wealth the hand on the dial of civilisation has been put back half a century the teachings of the Prince of Peace are, disregarded science is being prosti- tuted to diabolical ends and, so great are the issues at stake in the continued existence of empires and the preval- ence of international righteousness' that the Allies must continue the con-' flict, however terrible the consequences mlay be, until victory crowns their arms. Then and then only will the hope be realizable of the establish- ment of an international tribunal capable of enforcing its decisions on nations desirous of disturbing tne world's peace, so that the peoples will be able to beat their swords into pruning hooks and they shall iearn war no more. It is too late in the day now to enquire into the causes of the war or who is to blame for the outbreak. The nations outside the maelstrom have already decided that question It has been made abundantly evident that Germany had for over a generation been preparing for war and that she regarded the time when France was reorganising her military forces. when Russia was painfully recovering i i-om z!1 her disastrous war with Japan, and when Great Br;tain was threatened with civil war at home when the Kiel Canal had been completed and the German Fleet had been converted .,Ito the second most power- ful fleet in the world as the opportune moment for striking the blow which, with comparative ease, would have secured for Prussian militar sm the practical dominion of the western world. There can be no doubt about that. But how does Germany stand to-day after two years of warfare and putting into operation every intrigue and every diabolical devise for the destruction of her enemies on land and on sea? Could Germany have foreseen the situation as it exists to-day, would she have been so ready to enter upon her miiitary enterprise? it is true that she occu- p'ed Belgium and Northern France, Poland, and Serbia because of the 'nitial unpreparedness of the Allies but she has lost her footing in China. She has lost all her colonies and she I is now on the defensive on all her fronts. Her poor dupes, Austria and Turkey, are practically plaved out. I Armenia, the scene of untold horrors for generations at the hands of the un- spcakaoie lurk, has now been cleared of the dominion of that retrogressive power a fact in the history of humanitv that will go a long way to compensate for all the sacrifices of Gallfpoli and Mesopotamia. The old- time bravery of the British Navy and the indomitable pluck of the British soldier have been established. Wales herself has contributed largely not only to the military forces of the Empire but her soldiers have added to their splendid records in the Peninsula VV ars, in India, and all over the world Russia has risen like a phoenix trom the flames after ner serious defeats last year in Poland and Galicia. r ranee, by her splendid resistance at Verdun, broke the German back on the western front. The forces of the Allies are stronger than ever ,and, I p being well equipped, are able to take the offensive on all fronts, and their united determination continues un- .tbated to continue the struggle until Prussian militarism, which has con- verted Europe into an armed camp for the past forty years, has for ever been put down. The only drawback to the hopeful though terrible situation is the ^a.n.t of other matters, in the ritish politician and the unpatriotic conduct of sections of people like the South Wales miners, which must dis- courage the soldier on the field of battle and impair the power of the Govern- ment at home. But, as we have said, the end is not yet in sight. General Joffre, com- mander of the Allied forces, in a recent message to the French troops says "Vou may be proud of the work already accomplished. Victory is. certain. But victory is not yet,'how- ever hopeful the situation may at piesent appear. The German Emperor is less bombastic than at last year's anniversary and his belief less strong in his doing the will of the Deity in driving his own people to destruction, and in murdjering helpless prisoners, women, and children of other nations but he still professes to believe that Germany is invincible and sGJt blas- pnemously "relies on God's help." 'I'he blame for further bloodshed," ne says, "falls only on our enemies." Germany knows that she is fighting ior her existence and nothing can shake her endurance and determina- tion. "We sha 11," he adds, "bring this struggle to such an end that our Emp: re will be protected against future attack and that a free field will be assured for the peaceful develop- ment of German genius and labour." A question of importance to the owners of one-man businesses called up to join the colours is what is to become of their businesses in their absence r* Are the owners to find on their return that the s of their enterprise and industry have disappeared and that the owners them- selves have to start businesses afresh? There are several such cases in Aberystwyth and throughout the district. Where there is a Chamber of Trade cannot the Chamber keep things going while the owners are away serving ttfeir country and fighting the battles of those left at home? We believe it could be done if someone took the initiatory steps.
