From the Papers. At the annual meeting in connection with the -Cho Training Ship, Mr S. H. Burton, Beaumaris, was elected chairman of the committee 111 place of Sir Horatio Lloyd, who has resigned. The Captain Superintendant (Capt. Langton), in his re- port, stated that the average number of boys on board was 257. During the year 112 boys were admitted, one re-admitted, and 104 discharged. Of the boys discharged five were drafted into the Itoyal Navy; twenty-six volunteered and qualified as signallers. in the Royal Naval Reserve, thirteen joined the Army as musicians, and thirty-eight joined the mercantile marine service. The head schoolmaster, Mr Gastall, who was severely wounded and invalided from Gallipoli in August, was awarded a P.C.M. for gallantry, and an old boy named Merin has earned the same decoration. Mrs Lloyd George opened at Wrexham last week a sale of jewellery and antiques given by the residents of Denbighshire and Flintshire in aid of the National Fund for providing comforts for Welsh troops. Messrs Frank Lloyd and Sons acted as honorary auctioneers, and at the com- mencement it was announced that nearly ESO had been received in money donations. Subsequently Mrs Lloyd George visited Croesnewydd Military Hospital, Wrexham, and the opportunity was taken of asking her to open a complete. X-ray installation which has been presented by the family of the late Mr Alfred Owen, of Woodhey. Mrs Lloyd George, after expressing her pleasure in doing so, said it was gratifying to know that a place existed for the treat- ment of Welsh wounded soldiers, to whom she hoped it would be a great benefit. She was delighted to know that the hospital was linked up with the Welsh army which her husband inaugurated. "The position of women in citizenship and industry" was the title of an address bv Miss Margaret Ashton of Manchester. Women, she said, were in the position that they had no claim on special legisla- tion for themselves. The world was made up after man's pattern. Women were being driven into all sorts of industries that were made after man's pattern, and the race would suffer in consequence. About 5 000,000 women were being under- paid and were. therefore, in a poor condi-- tion of health, brain, and of power to put by and maintain themselves. They ought in some cases to be paid on a better scale than men. The fact that women were not being protected and were being underpaid was a frightful danger to the industrial system of the country. Whether there was a slump in industry after the war or not, there would be great disorganisation. Tho men would come back in large numbers and flood the labour market. If the em- ployers had promised to take men back. the women would have to clear out, and there would be a conflict between men who wanted higher wages and women willing to take lower wages, wth the result that the cheapest wages would win and the de- terioration of the industrial condit ons would be a serious menace to the standard of living of the whole country. They should look ahead so as to be able to meet those conditions when they arose. The only way would be to give men and women a fair field and no favour—equal opportunities. The war name fever shows no signs of abatement. At Liverpool three infant girls were christened "Drdanella" on the same day in the Potteries an unhappy baby was burdened with tho name of "Suvla Gallipoli," and a Glasgow boy will go through life as "Charleroi McVittie." In a letter to his wife an officer of the Indian Army Reserve describes some of the discomforts and some of the humours of the advance to Kut of the force sent to relieve General Townshend. He says —The Garden of Eden is not many hundred yards from my camp, at least that is the local belief. <0n the river front grows a tree of a kind very common in the. Punjab. I do not know whether you will recognise it by the name" shureen." It has long, fiat, yellow beans and feathery leaves. It is the only one of its kind here, and T. Atkins has named it "the forbidden tree." In its vicinity small Arab boys hawk cheap cigarettes aind biscuits nd tinned- milk, and the locality is known as "Temptation Square." It comes as a shock to think tha.t this can have been the crade of the human race. Net only have Cabinet Ministers signi- fied willingness to accept a portion of their salaries in exchequer bonds, but a number of Members of Parliament have written to the Treasury intimating that they are prepared to receive their salaries partly in bonds and partly in cash. By direction of the King, the institution of a new military medal is now under con- sideration. The Prime Minister, in so in- forming the House of Commons, explained that the object was to meet the excep- tionally large numbers of claims to recog- nition on account of bravery in the field. It was officially stated in the House of Commons that a labour battalion is about to be formed from provisional battalions in the Territorial Force for the purpose of relieving congestion at the ports, and that it will probably be followed by the forma- tion of other battalions of the same kind. The ravages of wood pigeons, which are always a serious farm pest, doing thou- sands of pounds worth of damage to the field crops of the country, are this year said to be worse than ever, and the Welshpool Farmers Union have decided on a novel plan to meet the situation. Out of their funds they are going to offer two- pence for each pigeon's egg and three- pence for each fledgling brought to mem- bers. It was also decided to organise shoots and to ask the County Council to waive the necessity of gun licences for the shoots to make the slaughter as great as possible. Replying to a question in the House of Commons last week as to the extent of the colonial possessions of the German Empire at the time of the outbreak of the war, and the extent of such territories now in the occupation of the Allies, Mr Bonar Law said the area was between 1.100,COOand 1.150,000 square miles, of which 730,000 square miles was now in the hands of the Allies. The area of German East Africa accounted for the remainder. The letting by auction took place at Oswestry last week of seventy-four acres of pasture land on the Hayes estate, ad- joining the town. The highest price realised for the different lots was £5 10s. an acre, and the average of the whole was just under £5 an acre, or 6s. an acre more than that realised at last year's sale. An ex,traord:'nar,y coincidence occurred one day ereently on the British front in France. A young lieutenant of the Royal Horse Artillery was sitting on the top of a haystack, accompanied by two of his men and engaged in making observations for his battery. Presently another artillery lieutenant, followed by two men, crawled up beside him, and they made their observations together. Chatting, the two were amazed to find not only that they were both New Zealnnders, but. that each was an Aueklander. Then. by comparison, they discovered that, although they had never before met, their homes were within a few yards of each other at Mount- Eden, one of the suburbs of Auck- land. The astounding sum of £127 .707 10s. 2d. was handed over to the authorities respon- sible for administering patriotic funds in New Zealand recently as the results of a three months' carnival held in different parts of Otago, one of the large southern provinces of the Dominion. The only ex- penditure on wages was £75 to the organ- iser. In every other case the work was done gratuitously. Sir Ciurteuay Cecil Mansel, eleventh baronet, of The Manor, Maesycrugiau, j Carmarthenshire, entered his thirty- seventh year on Friday, having been born on February 25th, 1880. The family pedigree goes back to Sir Philip de Maunsell, who came to this country with William the Conqueror from La Manche, in France. One of Sir Courtenay's an- cestors was Lord High Justiciar and Keeper of the Great Seal in 1246-8. The baronetcy was granted in 1622 to Sir Francis Mansel. The report of the executive committee of the National Relief Fund on the ad- ministration of the fund for the six months ended September 30th shows that the total receipts were ,28.643. of which £2.100,509 had been issued for naval and military relief, and £367,628 for civil relief. With the steady increase in the number of men called to the colours there has been an increase in expenditure on rent allowances, which now form the largest item of the Soldiers and Sailors Families' Association's expenditure on be- half of the fund. Without some assist- ance towards the payment of rent, the re- port says, thousands of soldiers' homes would have been broken up. would have been broken up. Lord Rhondda was the central figure on Thursday afternoon in the picturesque ceremony incidental to introducing a baron to the House of Peers. Alter prayers the newly-created Lord and his introducers. having donned the r robes and taken up their cocked hats. formed part of a procession, headed by the doorkeeper of the House, who was followed by Black Rod, by Garter King-at-Arms in his gold and emblazoned dress, the Lord Chan- cellor, and the Marquis of Lincolnshire. These preceded Lord Rhondda and his sponsors, Lords Merthyr and Aberconway. The letters patent of the creation having been read, Lord Rhondda and his intro- ducers raised their cocked hats to the Lord Chancellor, who replied by raising his, this being repeated again and again. The new lord was then conducted to seats in the House, cocked hats being raised again and again each time a seat was taken. At the close of the ceremony Lord Rhondda, was warmly shaken by the hand and welcomed by the Lord Chan- cellor. after which the peers disrobed. Lady Rhcndda occupied a seat in the Peeresses' Gallery during the ceremony. Later Lord and Lady Rhondda left London for Llanwern. At the annual meeting of the National Farmers' Union in London, Mr Cutts, Derbyshire, said the proposal to place dis- abled soldiers on the land should be fully examined before a scheme was launched which had not a millionth part of a chance of success. Farmers did not want to dis- courage any useful scheme, but it should have every consideration from a practical point of view before adoption. Another member demanded that farmers' interests be protected, otherwise the best portions of their land would be taken from them. Mr Padwick. vice-chairman, said Lord Selhorne had asked him to serve on the Government Committee as a practical farmer and representing the Union. I A Y KOiti, What London is Like Now. The streets are darkened certainly; but a stranger may thread his way along and even make aut the names of the streets. In passing through Landore and Port Talbot on Thursday night the towns were fully illumined. Both were vas~ areas of twinkling lights. At Bristol the streets were easily travers- ifcle. It is puzzling that whilst the most valuable copper works area is lit up, not a candle may be taken to a bedroom, especi- ally one fronting the sea at Aberayron. The same inequality is one of the aggrav- ating features of the war in the matter of recruiting, in the treatment of various units, in the treatment of various inter- ets, in promotions, in pay. In every London crowd, whether it was in a theatre, or church, chapel, or street, or itstaurant, the proportion of me i of re- c: uitahie age was apparently near the average observable at all times. Were they men certified to be medically unfit, and exempted, and young married men? Zeppelins had recently raided the Mid- lands, and there had been hostile aircraft at Lowestoft on that very Sunday; but I met no one who had the slightest fear. The theatres and cinematograph shows are full. The performance of "Faust" at the Shaftesbury drew as great an audience as could be swn at any average time, for there were no seats for money in some parts of the house on Saturday. The performance was superb. What a world of good it would do if every church and chhpel precentor and organist saw and heard such a perform- ance but once ? For the organ plays when Marguerite seeks consolation in prayer at the church. The care in technique, not to speak of the quality of the voices, would cause a revision of methods by all who have eyes and ears. It is worthy of remark that most of the great operas end in tragedy— "Faust," "Romeo and Juliet," "Tales of Hoffman." The morning service at St. Pauls on Monday was as delightful and inspiring as always. Well did Wren say that this matchless church, should be his monument. There was a surpliced choir of about fifty. boys and men. The officiating priest read the lesson with so distinct enunciation that he could be understood fifty yards away. What a contrast to that which is given in some places in the way lof reading of the lessons A gleam of sunshine illumined the dome and glowed the shadows. It is something great after all that we non-con-form from. There was a peri- patetic auditorium of forty people. New Oxford-street and Oxford-street on Tuesday morning. February 22nd, were packed with omnibuses, drays, and taxis. One could walk on the top of the omnibuses which crawled along, in two lines, end to enll, as far as the eye could see. The pavements were as thronged by men and women peering intently into the windows of the well-known shops, just as of old. The searchlights and the semi- darkeii'pd streets were the only signs of anything unusual. There was one other sign of the times. A large restaurant in the Strand, where some good tea is biewed, had more waiters than customers at an hour when it used to be thronged. It might be that it is a sign of the seriousness of the times that the House of Commons was lethargic, for it is when there is a comparatively-trivial matter to attend to that it usually becomes animated. When the sixth vote of credit of £ 420,000,000 was agreed to on Monday night there werci seven members only present in the part of the House visible from the distinguished strangers gallery, When M r Asquith introduced the vote of credit there was no great attendance such as we read of in great times. It dwindled as the night wore on. Even when the Chancellor of the Exchequer rose later on there were fourteen members only in the House. His words brought some comfort to a larger audience who were seated in the strangers galleries. Said he, The Government is satisfied with the present rate of exchange. Any- one comparing it with the exchange rate of Germany or Austria would see what our credit meant It was an absolute marvel that after eighteen months of war we were still almost the only open gold country in the world. Every bit of paper represent- ing a sovereign could be exchanged for gold at the Bank. Two years ago it would have been thought impossible that we should raise such gigantic sums; but although votes of credit had now been asked for of over 2,000 millions, this country continued to be an open market for gold and the whole world could come to it for gold. If we acted with prudence and states, manship we could maintain our credit throughout the war, however long it might last." The Chancellor evidently is a man who understands his work thoroughly. All this time there were two ministers in attend- ance, both Under-Secretaries—Mr Montague and Mr. Tennant. L A The criticisms iiias followed, which apparently were in order •hen they ranged over the whole field of expenditure were startling in their character. One wondered if they were strictly accurate. The charges brought by Capt. Bennett Goldney, regarding the air policy of the Government. in a. quiet and unemotional manner would provide a theme for a Gilbert and Sullivan musical comedy. He said, "Regarding the daylight raid on Dover on January 23rd. what happened was a battle between one of our aeroplanes and one of our seaplanes, each of which mistook the other for the enemy. Having witnessed the fray, our anti-craft gunners turned their fire on both, and in the vain attempt to bring them down managed to damage the tower of Walmer Church and injure some of the men in barracks." As another specimen of the criticism the following is typical of the rest:—Mr Lynch, Clare West, Nationalist, said The country was governed by men who were not fitted to lead in great emergencies. The Foreign Secretary had never seen realities.. He had been one ot the great failures before the war; but then his was a. great undis- covered incapacity. Had we had a man of the force of President Lincoln at the head of affairs he would have told the Foreign Secretary We must part.' The Secretary of State for War had been a monumental failure. His reputation had always been artificial. He was the most disastrous man the nation could have chosen. His blunders had been enormous. We must give up the notion that we can muddle through, that time played for us, it played for the Germans; that we could win by starving the Ger- mans, or a process of attrition, or econ- omically. The war was to be won only by beating the Germans in the field, but hitherto the Government and their mili- tary advisers had no plan." There were seven members present to listen- to all that and the majority of them were wait- ling to catch the Speaker's eye. The House rose at 10-20. No wonder a man came away after such talk, for two or three hours, in a despondent mood. After reaching the members lobby I met a Welsh member and asked him, "Is one-tenth of what those members said true?" Oh. they are the bores of the House." He laughed deprecatingly. But even that grain of comfort did not remove my gloom It is difficult to find such a genial, un- selfish guide as Mr. J. Hugh Edwards can be within the alluring precincts of the house. He shares his time and all the honours bestowable on such a visit lavishly and unstintingly, and they are many. Contrasted with the conduct of others. his services are very remarkable. The people iat Ealing Cliapel) are a happy, bright, and thriving community. Mr. Thickens' chapel appointments speak of strenuousness and purpose To be a successful minister, in London especially, requires the best wearing qualities, including energy.

Mr R.. J. Campbell. formerly pastor of the City Temple, was ordained at Bir- mingham Cathedral last week by the Bishop of Birmingham, Dr Russell Wake- field. The sermon was preached by Canon the Hon. When the tables were cleared, Mr Thomas Jones, Kenel Clothing Factory, took the chair and called on the Treasurer (Mr Tm Jones, National Provincial Bank, Aber- ayron) to read the financial statement The total receipts amounted to tll7. Mr D. Saunders Davies, Commercal House, proposed a hearty- vote of thanks to all who had taken part in the under- taking. He sxd that the success of the favr had exceeded the hopes of the most optimistic of its promoters. The vote was seconded by the Chairman, and supportea by Miss Grace M. Lewes, Llanlear, and Mr John Davies, Cwmcafan Mills. Songs were afterwards sung by Miss Mima Jones, Cwmere, and Mr W'.Ilie Hughes, Nanthenfoel. A few games were then indulged in and an enjoyable evening was spent. Evangelistic. -Miss Rosina. Davies, the woman evangelist, is now on a vis.t to the district and preached at Tynygwndun Chapel last Sunday morning and also on Wednesday evening. Her discourses and especially her singing of sacred solos were keenly appreciated by the congregations.

ABERMEURIG. Tea Party.—The annual tea party was held at the C.M. Chapel on Friday. Though the weather was most unfavour- able, a great number of the members and their friends presented themselves at the tables. The following ladies were respon- s.ble for providing the necessaries:—Mrs Jenkins, Tanffordd; Mrs Griffiths, Cwm- cafan; Miss Griffiths, Cwmcafan Canol; Mrs Evans, Gilfachfran; Mrs Griffiths, Caemelyn; and Misses Davies Cwmcafan Factory. In the evening a concert was held. The veteran minister (the Rev. John Evans), now in his eighty-sixth year, presided, and Mr W. Thomas, C.M. Council School, Gartheli, acted as con- ductor. A lengthy programme of recita- tions, solos, duetts and two items by the local choir under the conductorship of Mr Daniel Jenkins, Tanffordd, was gone through. The meeting was terminated by the rendering of the Welsh National Anthem, the solo being taken by Mrs M. Roger Lewis, Abermeurig.

LLANAFAN. Personal.—Mr. and Mrs. Crawley Boevey, Birchgrove, have recovered after their recent indisposition. Mrs. Crawley Boevey has been energetic with regard to knitting for soldiers and used to call round at the cottages, so that her absence was greatly felt. One and all were glad to see her again on her usual rounds.

V"tt. LIBRARY. A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS by Howell Thomas.- London: T. Fisher Unwin; 3/6 net. At the present time when the Royal Welsh Fuisiliers have added fresh lustre to their name a history of the regiment is opportune and will be read with interest by all Welshmen at home and abroad. All the profit from the sale of the book will be handed over to the Old Comrades Fund of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Mr Howell Thomas states in his preface "The pub- lished historical records of the regiment have long been out of print; and the pre- sent work is intended to satisfy a wide- spread and eager desire in Wales and elsewhere for particulars of the doings and adventures of that famous regiment during its existence of over two centuries." No Welshman can read the record without a feeling of pride, for as the late Prince Consort said in presenting new colours to the Welsh Fusiliers in 1849 the regiment was "renowned for valour, fortitude, steadiness, and discipline." The book graphically describes the true soldierly qualities which characterised the regiment in Marlborough's campaigns, in Minorca, in America, in Egypt, at Corunna, at Martinique, in the Spanish Peninsula, and at W aterloo, as well as its subsequent history in nearly every quarter of the globe—in Canada, the West Indies, the Crimea, India during the Mutiny, Ashanti, Burmah, China, and South Africa. The word "fusilier," Mr Thomas says, "signifies a soldier armed with a fusil '-a musket or firelock-and. was conferred in the first instance on an ordnance corps raised in 1685 to guard the artillery, so as to distinguish its members from the gunners with whom they were associated. Many names familiar to our readers are mentioned in the book, in- cluding Brigadier General Mainwaring, who was brigadier at Aberystwyth, last winter; and Major General Owen Jones of Bala who was captain of Royal Engineers engaged in road and bridge making in the Ashanti campaign. This little book of some seventy pages contains much useful informa- tion on a large number of subjects. They include the keeping of accounts in order to save the frittering away of house money in spending small sums on un- necessary things; how to save in catering 11 for a family, practical hints on clothing, simple house repairs, and how to make 800 per cent. on small garden plots and 200 per cent. on poultry keeping. A useful chapter is that on "Food Constituents for Well-Balanced Dietary." It is to be feared that a large number of housewives never learn the constituent values of food and are not given that instruction in the ordinary cooking class, with the result that when housekeeping money is reduced and the housekeeper is unable to buy the more expensive foods she is at a loss to know how to maintain the body with foods which cost little but are equally nourish- ing. For an average adult person in full health, the writer says, no more than one ounce of protein is necessary each- day to sustain the body in full vigour. One pound of butcher's meat provides three ounces of protein at a cost of Is. 2d. whereas one pound of haricots at 3d. pro- vides 34 ounces of protein and one pound of dried peas at 4d. the same amount of protein. Fat which is of immense import- ance, especially to growing children, is obtained from both animal and vegetable substances and carbohydrates are pro- vided by bread, potatoes, rice, sugar, and tapioca, while, carrots, parsnips, artichokes, and beetroot provide a considerable pro- portion of carbohydrates. Interests of Welsh Troops. General Owen Thomas's scheme for establishing a Welsh national organisa- tion to saieguard the interests of Welsh troops during and after the war was suc- cessfully launched at a national confer- ence held at Shrewsbury on Friday. Everyone present at the conference was in some degree or capacity representative of Welsh public life. General Owen Thomas was voted to th.2 chair. All that it was possible to do in promotion of the scheme at so early a stage the conference did and did with a whole heart. The first and most important act was to adopt unanimously the following resolution pro- posed by the ibishop of St. Asaph, seconded by Colonel the Rev. John Williams (Brynciencyn), and supported by Sir Herbert Roberts, M.P. :That this meeting has heard with interest the scheme now laid before it, and is in cordial sympathy with it-s object as a supplement to the scheme inagurated by H.R.H. the Prince. of Wales, under the provisions of the Naval and Military War Pensions Act, and pledges itself to do all in its power to enlist for it the sympathy and support of Welshmen." There seemed at one point some risk of a division in the conference, but after a friendly comparison of views it was happily avoided and complete unanimity attained. The difficulty arose on the question whether the new organisation to he set up might not overlap and conflict with the new statutory authorities. Colonel Pryce-Jones emphasised the need of guarding against the danger of overlapping. In the end, however, it all came clear. The scheme is not intended to conflict or compete with or to overlap any State provision. -It is intended, as the Bishop of. St. Asaoh. and Mr. Henry Gladstone pointed out, to enable Welsh soldiers and sailors to take the fullest advantage of any State provision, to supplement it where it falls short materially, and, not least of all, to pre- serve in the administration of relief funds and agencies the ihuman tnd, personal touch. General Owen Thomas was asked and authorised to make the necessary arrange- ments for convening provincial conferences for the four areas into which Wales is to be divided for th purposes of the scheme. The Prince of Wales was elected president of the movement, and the Earl of Plymouth, General Sir Hills Johnes. Mr. Lloyd George, and Lord Kenyone—each representing one division of Wales—were elected vice-presidents. For the positions of chairman and vice-chairman of the Executive Committee, Mr. Henry N. Gladstone and the Lord Mayor of Cardiff for the time being were chosen, and Sir W. J. Thomas was "elected treasurer. Addressing the conference, General Owen Thomas said—"This conference is, in fact, the whole nation in miniature, and I am proud to feel that my countrymen realise with me the duty we owe to our brave soldiers and sailors. Wales in this war has responded magnificently to the call of Empire. No fewer than 200.000 men have joined. I do not think any part of Great Britain can boast of a higher percentage of the population. Two hundred thousand—a bigger army than that which Wellington had when he over- threw Napoleon. I have spent some time and energy in recruiting for this Welsh army; but I am here to-day to start a new recruiting campaign. J want a. new army of two millions, and in this second army I want every man, woman, and child to take an active interest. There will be no man, woman, or child military unfit to serve in this army—no age limit, no advisory committee, no tribunal. What is the work of this new army? Speaking in military terms, I want it to dig trenches between the workhouse and these brave fellows, to scout the country for billets for them, and to save them from the humiliat- ing experiences which many brave men who went with me through the South African war were subjected to. It is gratifying to us to know that the Govern- ment contemplates provision against such a condition of things being repeated, but the Government is at best only a mother- in-law. We want to help the Govern- ment We welcome all the Government will and can do; but we feel that some- thing beyond that something more per- sonal and intimate, is demanded of us. This is our own Welsh army. We want as Welshmen to look after our own men, and I am sure from what I see to-day that Wales will do it. We have over two million people in Wales. Let everyone give, but a shilling a. year, a penny a month, and we shall have a great popular fund, in which the humblest as well as the greatest will be personally interested, for helping the brave fellows who have sacri- ficed so much for us. (Cheers). General Thomas, after the close, of the conference, expressed his complete satis- faction with the result. Everything, he remarked, had gone through without a hitch, and he felt confident of the success of the scheme. There was no real fear of overlapping, though it was wise to pro- vide against any possible danger. He felt sure that outside the fullest and best Government provision there would be plenty to do in Wales for the Welsh troops after the war, and he wanted to see that voluntary work done in a truly national and democratic spirit, completely uniting the whole nation. An offer made by the Australian Com- monwealth of an aerial squadron has been accepted by the War Office. Comprising twenty-eight commissioned officers and 186 men. the squadron has already been pro- viisiVnally organised in Australia, under the command of Colonel Reynolds, who has been head of the Werribee Flying School and was formerly at Camberley Staff College. The flying machines, it is stated, will be sent from England to the front.

I PENBRYN Wit!< Case.—In the Chancery Division last week Mr Justice Younger heard the adjourned summons of in re Rees Thomas Evans v. Thomas which was taken out by [ Mr Thomas Evans, of Dyffrynbern. Pen- bryn, as administrator of the estate of the late Mr Rees Thomas, of Pencnwc. Tre- saith, to determine certain questions arising under his will. Mr Baker said the will was a short one and of the home- made variety. The respondents to the summons were Capt. John Thomas, of Penylan the Rev John Thomas, of the Vicarage, Penbryn; Mr David Davies, Cefnceirw, Penbryn; Mr John Hyett, Penbryn; Mr Evan John Evans, of Pen- cestyll, and Margaret EVans, May Evans. and Lily Evans (infants), cf Dyffrynbern. The questions the Court was asked to determine were whether the plaintiff ought to convey the testator's estate of Pencmvc, Tresaith, to Captain John Thomas, and, if so, whether it should lie a clear conveyance or whether it was sub. ject to a condition as to the upkeep of the graves of the testator and his family, Secondly, whether the Vicar and church- j-wardens of the parish of Penbryn could give a good discharge for the sum of £ 530 mentioned in the will. Thirdly, whether I a bequest to Evan John Davies of the testator's house, Gwynfan, or 14, Nortli- gate-terrace, Cardigan, was subject to payment by him of the expenses incurred in connection with the taking cut of letters of administration, and whether those in connection with the taking cut of letters of administration, and whether those expenses included estate duty. And, fourthly, whether a gift of LSO to each of the infants was a joint gift. By the will the devise to Captain John Thomas was subject to a condition that lie should pay Ll yearly towards the maintenance of the g.raves of the testator and his parents, Mr Tyldesley Jones, on his behalf, argued that he was heir-at-law to the estate, and the upkeep of the graves was purely an honcurary oblication, and the Captain was therefore entitled to a clear conveyance. His Lordship held that that was so. After argument, his Lordship held that the L530 payable to the Vicar and churchwardens sliculd be paid to the Official Trustee of Charitable Funds, the income to be paid to the Vicar and churchwardens for the time being to be applied by them in ar- cordance with the terms of the will. He also held that Mr Evan John Davies was not to I pay estate duty on reality and, in the event of the death of either of the infants, all of whom were stated to be now alive and flourishing, her share should be equally divided between the other two.

Cardiganshire agricultural interests were well represented at a recent conference in London with Lord Northbrook and other members of the Agricultural Relief of Allies Cbmmittee. CREAT WESTERN RAILWAY. The annual general meeting of the Great Western Railway Company was held at Paddington, Viscount Churchill presiding. The balance available in 1915 for dividend on ordinary stock was £ 2,292.852, and in 1914 £ 2,338,576. The interim dividend on ordinary stock of E2 per cent. for the half-year ended 30th June absorbed L741,644, leaving a balance of ZE1,551,208, which admitted of the pay- ment of a dividend of £ 3 15s. per cent. for the half-year ended 31st December, leaving a balance to be carried forward of £ 160,625. The Chairman said the figures of 1914 were higher relatively than those of other railways, owing to the Great Western re- ceipts during the earlier part of 1914 being especially good, whilst those of other com- panies showed a decrease. By comparison the Great Western dividend for the past year showed a reduction of one-half per cent. The reason was that the Company had to pay war bonus, amounts charged for dependents of men serving with the colours ( £ 66,000), L12,000 interest on the additional debenture stock, C8,500 addi- tional paid on account of rents, etc., £ 15,500 less was received in respect of in- terest, rents, etc., and a smaller balance by £ 18,000 was brought fcrward. If he were asked whether the directors were satisfied with the arrangements with the Government, and whether those arrange- ments had been beneficial to the Great Western Railway, his answer was that in the extraordinary circumstances in which the Company was placed by the country being suddenly plunged into a European war, he thought it had been abundantly shown that the placing of the railways at the disposal of the Government for the carriage of men, material, and munitions had been completely justified by results. The manner in which the enormous amount of traffic had been carried by the Comoany reflected the greatest credit on all their employees engaged in the work.

THE QUESTION OF HEALTH.
