With the exception of a shower between. twelve and one o'clock, rain kept off, thongh heavy dark clouds rolled in from over the sea and along the mountains. There was a large attendance and it is understood that the takings of the gate were IN excess of those of last year. There was. as usual at Talybont, a fine show of agricultural horses, the exhibits maintaining the standard of former years since an improvement set in consequent on the introduction of new and better blood by the late Sir Pryse of Gogerddan. The draught mares and foals (the mares 16 hands and over) were a particularly-fine lot. Mr H. P. Edwards, Lovesgrove Farm, took the prize with his" Y swyth Molly," which also won as one of a pair of draught horses shown in a cart or waggon. In the same class of horses under sixteen hands, Mr Griffith Jones, Wileirogisa, was placed first to Mr John Griffiths of Dolgau's second. An interesting class was that for draught mare or gelding of the collier type and no fewer than ten entries were made. The Cardiganshire heavy horse seems suited for colliery work for it is short, compact, and strong. It was alto- gether a strong class. Mr. Jenkins of Oerrigtaranau's fine mare was selected for first place here as at Machynlleth, her ex- cellent hoofs and pasterns at once securing the Judge's attention. Sir Edward Pryse's fine exhibit not only secured first place in the class for draught mares or geldings, but for the best two-year-old draught colt or filly. It is A I--I RONG PROMISING young "ter. S'r Prrse's special p r i ,o for the yeurling got by CCq VIC'U-R' won by Mr. J G. Jones. Ruel I:-af, in class of six in which five were marked- FC.. the Judge, and Mr. William Morgan. Pvllg'as. took Sir P:'yse's extra prize for tho best foal got by the same sire. No fewer than seven prizes were offered. all of which were awarded and there werc- several entries over and to spare. There were five entries for Mr. R chard Jr.imes' prizo for best colt or filly got by Webh I t Rocket," and the prize went to Mr. John Edwards, Nantsiriol. The light horses classes were all WEL' filled, and there were many smart, well- bred animals brought under the eye of judges. The competition was remarkably keen in all the classes, and the excitement during the trials for speed and action great. Out of the competitions and trials, Mr D. R Thomas's (Tanrallt) Stud Farm came off with many prizes and much credit, for Jr. Thomas had to meet Mr. Evan Richards, Penuwchfawr. and other foemen worthy of his steel. In the class for cob mare and foal. 141 and under, there were three 2 entries, each of which was placed. lr. Thomas was placed first with a smart chest- nut mare wlrich obtained first last year at Talybont—" Miss Recruit." His mare "Action Again," not only took the prize for the best-F.ctioned mare or gelding, 14 hands and over to be ridden, but second in the open class for horse or mare to be ridden, and second in the open harness class, stylo and action taken into considera. tion. His bay mare "Paula," was also a prominent winner, as it was at the We HI National a few weeks previously. It took the prize for the best-actioned niare or gelding under 14 hauds to be ridden, for the bast pony and foal under 12. and in tho best turn-out when style, action, and turn-out wero taken into consideration In the strong class of pony colt or filly under 131 hands and foaled in 1907. Mr. Thomas took first place with his smart dark brown horse "Lord Snorer," which took second at the London Haeknev Show last March, and was placed first at tho Easter show. Th second prxe went to a fine horse belonging to Mr. L. O. Williams, butcher. Tre'rddol, for an exhibit wh:V-h was deservedly placed first at Machynlleth Agricultural show in the previous" week. With his Firegirl," Mr. Thomas took the Welsh Pony and Cob Society's silver medal for the best maro and second in harness for stylo lanÓ action. Among the other suc- cessful exhibitors in the light horses classes were Mrs. Jenkins. Henbatod. with "Hafod Horace," Messrs H. P, Edwards with "Ystwyth Toff," land Mr William Owen. Brynrodyn. Borth. Mr. Morgan D. Wil- 1 liams, Cynnullmawr, and Mr. John Lewis, Tyngraig. in the pony classes. The trot. 1 ting and turn-out competitions excited the greatest interest and enthusiasm in the spectators. In one of the turn-out cocn- J petitions a portion of the harness gave way with the result that the shafts went on to I the ground and one of them was doubled up. In tho contest for first place for the prizes for the fastest trotting horse or mare 1 under 13.1. Mr. D. Jenkins Bryncarnedd, won; ana in the open trotting class for horses 14 hands and over, Mr Daniel Row. lands, Cross Inn, Llanon was placed first, Mr Johiv Griffiths, Pentrebolan, second, ] and Jr. E. V. Rees, Pennal, third; and in thé.. open DOTTING under 14 hands Jenkins, Brviieirticcid Mr. Jones. Eryn- gwynmawr, and Ah- R Jenkins, Henhafod In the two latter classes, horses having taken first prize for two previous years at Talybont show were not eligible for competition. Perhaps the most exeit- ing event of the afternoon in the horse department was the contest for the on en I. prizes among the riders of horses or mares. After a spirited contest, the first prize went to MR Da via Evans, Nag's Head, NEW- CASTLE Emlyn; the second to Mr. D ":{ Thomas, Tanrallt; tho third to Mr. Evar Richards, Penuwchfawr; and Mr Boughton Le'gh, Do\ "oy Bank, was highly commended. Ir. Leigh also occupied honourable place 111 turnouts with style and action. JI Randolph Fear, Terrace-road. Aberystwyth was placed first in tradesmen's turnouts. All agreed that the show of Welsh cnUlf' was excellent, and the fact that several prize-takers of previous years had to occupy a somewhat lower place in the pr z-? list was in itself significant of progress in the breed and get-up of the native stock. There were three entries in the aged bull class and all three were marked by the judges. The Cerrigtranau fine and mas- sive bull, well bred and having good all- round points, which narrowly missed first at Machynlleth, was placed first at Taly- bont, Mr R. James, Btynllys, and Mr. Bodvel Morgan coming second and third with very creditable exhibits. In yearling bulls, Mr Williams,Cynullmawr, took first with a promising youngster which also made a close fight for first place at Mach- ynlleth. It is a harciy and well-shaped bull from one of the best herds in Carnarvon- shire. Bull calves made a small but meritorious class, Mr Re-es. Tygwyn, Taly- bont, taking first, and Mr. J G. Jones, Ruel Isat, second. In cows and heifers in milk or in calf and in yearling heifers, Mr. Jenkins, Cerrigtranau, again led the way. The in-calf heifer should be the progenitor of a capital herd "for Mr. Jenkins. It promises to develop into a massive cow and is of excellent touch and good coat and appears to have been carefully bred and attended to by its owner. It took three first prizes, including the open last year and was a winner at Machynlleth. His yearling heifer is also a well-shaped animal which was placed first in her class at the Welsh National where she had formidable competitors from Mr. Greave's herd and stock from Bangor College Farm. In two-year-old heifers, Mr Jones, Elgar, was placed first with 13 promising youngster, and in heifer calves Mr. 'J. Llewelyn Jones, Doleneglwys. There was a fine show of steers, in which Mr. R. Jones, Ynyshir Farm, and Mr. Jones. Elgar, came out on top. Cattle of any other breed were repre- sented solely by those of the shorthorn breed, AND the exhibits, almost without exception, were of pedigree stock. In the bull class. Mr. Rees. Tynpark, led the way with his excellent roan, "Messenger," and in yearlings, Mr J. R. James, Peithyll. with a pure pedigree youngster of good quality, bred by Mr. R. S. Rowland. The Garth. Sir Edward Pryse's massive red bull was placed second in the aged class, and his pretty red and white exhibit first in the bulf calf section. Sir Edward was equally successful in obtaining first with an exhibit possessing a silky. touch and excellent points all round in the COW AND heifer class, Mr. Rees's "Proud Duchess" coming second. In heifer and heifer calves, Sir Edward, Major Bonsall, and Mr Rees divided the honours. Mr Lewis Owen, Elmen House, Talybont, took first in the cottager class with a very presentable ex- hibit In the special class for milch or in- CA^ cows or he:fers belonging to a tenant farmer, Mr David Jones, Elgar, carried eff the laurels from two shorthorns with a black heifer which had taken first prize in her class. Sheep, as usual, at Talybont, made a large and interesting department or the show. The entries were divided into up- land and lowland Welsh, Kerrys, and sheep of any other breed which practically meant Shropshires. There was a remarkably- large number of upland rams and ram lambs, and all were of improved breed and quality. The judges, however, were some- what sparing in their awards and com- mendations. Mr Tom Jones. Moelglomen, led all the way in rams and ram lambs, only giving place to Mr. Hughes, Tynant, in yearling rams. Mr Jones, Moelglomen was also first in three ewes, yearling ewes, ewe lambs, and wethers. Mr. Jenkins, Alltgoehymynydd, another well-known flockmaster, had a respectable look in with itwo-vear-old wethers. In lowland sheep, Mr. Jenkins was first and second with fine rams. Mr. Jones, Elgar, and Mr. Morris. Penywern, coming first in yearlings and ram lambs, as they did also in ewes, wethers, and lambs. There was a very presentable lot of well-bred Kerrys in the exhibition, of which Mr. James. Peithvll, Mr. James, Nantcellanfawr, Clarach, and Mr.Rees, Tynpark, were highly successful. There was but a. small show of Shropshires. but they were all well bred. All the first prizes went to Major Bonsall, Fronfraith. The side shows in roots, grain, garden produce, butter, horse shoes, sheep shear- ing, aiid weight-guessing attracted great attention. In the absence of Professor Bryner Jones through the illness of a relative, Mr. Roberts of Perfeddnant was the judge of green crops and so pleased was he with the excellence of the competition that he marked eight out of eleven entries and suggested an increase and further award of prizes. Miss Fisk, of the TTniver. sity College of Wales, was also gratified at the quality of the butter ffxhibits as indi- cating some results of instruction in dairy, ing which have now been carried on by the County Council in conjunction with the College for many years. There was a decided improvement in ripening cream, in the matter of moisture, and in the absence of over working and excessive salt, ing. Some of the butter would COMPARE favourably with exhibits AT the dairy show. J competition in horse shoe-making wa: NEW and useful feature. The guessir:. h THE we.GLIT of a well-bred pig and O, attenuated sheep was al: O novel. Some GO competitors entered, including experc. cMiced farmers and butchers who were non. piussod by the sheep and were far out ii; their guessing. In the sheep shearing competition, the prizes were won by men who were left handed, but who neverthe- less did excellent and dexterous work. THE PRIZE LIST.
