FOOTBALL NOTES BY YSTWYTH. Mr. Alf Townsend, Newtown, has been II appointed to referee in the cup-tie between 11 Aberystwyth and Llanidloes on February 27th. The same official will do duty next Saturday at Aberystwyth, in the Senior Gup tie against Chester. A cheap fast excursion will be run from (hest-er next Saturday to Aberystwyth, 'n the occasion of the cup tie between I A her. and Chester. The return fare for one day is 3s. 9d. only, and for the week- I pnd 6s. 6d. It is stated that a good j i 1 umber intend coming from Chester just vo see what kind of a seaside resort Aber- ystwyth is and many no doubt will stay tor three days. The Chester j i "layers look upon the game as already on. The unexpected, however, often appens in cup ties, as Liverpool found j -stit last Saturday in their cup tie with Norwich City who occupy a Qoor position j i i the Southern League table. A crowd | 1 of enthusiastic supporters from Norwich accompanied the team to Liverpool and encouraged the players by shouting and j cheering from the beginning to end. The j Liverpudlians are a class above Norwich and expected to win with a good margin j i of goals, bnt the Norwich players flew all f over the place, never keeoing still, and j I making the ball as restive and restless as j ] themselves. It upset the Liverpool halves sadly at times, with the exception of Maurice Parry. Aberystwyth, to make any kind of show, should follow the exam-pie of Norwich, an if the Aber. players attempt to play a scientific game ,i, a i, I against the Cestrians they will be clean over-matched, the visitors being past. masters in the best tactics of the game. All the Town players should step on to the field with a thorough determination to win and pla-v a. dashing vigorous kick-and- a-rush kind of game until the can of time. They I are just the right stamp of players to up- j set the Chester defence and if the shrh-nts and the other players worry the defence continually and the crowd cheer them on ¡ there is quite a possibility of the searidero pul'insr through, or. at anv rate, making a draw of it. As this match promise- to be one of the best that has been played at I Aberystwyth for a number of years, the shop assistants in the town are anxious to be present, and it is hoped tradesmen will close their establishments next Saturday afternoon for two hours. There will not be much business done, as practically all the town will be on the Smithfield Ground or lining Penparke road for a cheap view. The great Rugger international match between Scotland and Wales took place at I Inverleith, Scotland, on Saturday, and iust on the call of time when Scotland was leading, Wales, by a magnificent effort, scored a try and Bancroft kicked a grand goal, thus giving the Welshmen a victory by five points to three. As usual in these particular encounters, it was a contest between the Scottish forwards and Welsh hacks, but on Saturday both sides gave & somewhat ragged exhibition. The ScottisI: forwards wheeled cleverly, they scrummed honestly, and their loose footwork wm good, but they invariably failed when the: had established themselves in a good posi- tion near the Welsh line. The ehl. backs, too, did not show that wonderful accuracy of combination for which they are noted. There were plenty of beauti- ful movements, generally started by Owen with his pet reverse pass and carried on by Jones, but as a rule little ground ■ was gained. This, of course, was due to the sturdy spoiling tactics of the Scottish three-quarters who on many occasions practically stood offside in their anxiety to prevent the \Velsh "threes" getting J under weigh Nothing was scored up to half-time and matters looked towards a pointless draw until Cunningham placed an excellent penalty goal for Scotland. Three minutes before time. however, the Welsh forwards worked the ball down to the Scottish "25." In a moment it was out, like a flash it went from Owen to R. Jones, on to J. P. Jones who passed to Trew The Scottish defence was out- witted and Trew scored rather far out, but Bancroft converted and Scotland saw victory snatched from her grasp when expecting to hold it securely. The cus- tomary hooting of the Welsh team at Inverleith took place which does not say much for the sportsmanship of the Scot- tish spectators. The League game at Aberystwyth on Saturday, between Towyn and Aberyst- wvth, ended very unsatisfactory as far as Aber. was. concerned. The homesters were pressing three parts of the game, but the forward, with perhaps the excep- tion of Jack Jones and Wright, were poor. They had innumerable chances to net the ball, but mulled every one. The referee was partly responsible, as his decisions on the offside rule were somewhat crude, dis- heartening the youngsters in the front rank. The crowd got into a bad humour, but nothing serious, happened with the exception of a lot of booing and the making of uncomplimentary remarks. It is hoped that the noisy followers of the team will not get beyond the hooting ftage—there was far too much of that on Saturday—or else the Weisli Association will get to hear of it and the field will get suspended. Already some of the visiting teams have comolained of unfair remarks shouted at them which will eventually give the town a bad name un- less it is stopped. For Towyn, Pryce Evans at left back was unsteady for the first fifteen minutes, but subsequently improved. He was not the equal of Oswald Green, the Aber. left hack. The Towyn left half was a clinking good player, very clever at robbing opponents off the ball, and untiring throughout. He would be a decided acquisition to the Aber. team. The goal which Towyn had and which equalised the result of the game was a soft affair, mainly due to the fault of the Aber. backs who had wandered out of their places and Davies could not be blamed as he could not tackle three men singly. The College team went to play at New- town against the Royal Welsh Warehouse and from all accounts, after having all the best of the game, were defeated by three goals to one. The replay in the Welsh Amateur Cup competition between Bala Press and Rhos Rangers was played off at Bala on Satur- day and, to the disappointment of the fol- lowers of the Press, the Rangers won by two goals to none. Everyone expected the Bala PreFs to win, as having drawn away at Rhos a fortnight ago, the people naturally expected the Pressmen would get the best of matters at home. On the occasion of the international at Inverleith on Saturday, there was a fine invasion of the Scottish capital by Welsh enthusiasts. No fewer than 3,500 travelled from South Wales to Scotland and wearers of the leek made themselves conspicuous in the forenoon promenade in Princess- s street. The following players have been selected by the Match Committee to represent Aberystwyth against Chester on the Smithfield Ground next Saturday:—Goal, H. D Roberts; backs, M. Jenkins (vice- captain), and Oswald Green; halves, T. W_ Rees (captain), Peter Edwards, and W. D. Thomas: forwards, T. J. James. Jack Jones, W. J. James, R. R. Jones. and W. Wright. There are six students selected and five from the Town League Team. It is a good combination and if all wi'l give of their best Chester will have their work cut out to win. The defence "is sound. and if the attacking line will do their duty without flinching, the prospects are thnt Aber. will gain a victory, but each mnn n the team must be a thorough trier to ihe very last, or the disappointment will be great in the town that night. Towyn having the sun in their face: Aber. were the first to become dangerous and Pryce Fvans cleared well, and at the other end .Davids had to clear from Morris. After the game had been in progress for some time it was seen that Aber. were the best team and were continually swarming arourd the visitor;' goal-mouth. but the home forwards c-ould do everrihing but score. Towyn once or twice got down to the home territory, but Green proved a stumbling block. After a corner to Aber. had been cleared by Pryce Evans, who was playing a good game Morris tested Davies with a good shot which the Aber. goalkeeper saved well. After this both goals were visited in turn and, had the Aber. forwards showed anything like con- sistency in front of goal they would have been two or more goals in front before half-time. As it d was, the splendid centres of both the extreme 'wingers, Wright and Jack Jones, went a-begging. Time after time did Wright send in centres only to see one of the forwards fail to trap the ball or either shoot the wrong side of the pott. Harry Edwards, on the Towyn right, also sent in one or two centres, but Jenkins and Green took good care not to allow the visitors' for- wards to get within shooting range, although Wynne, in the centre, once or twice looked like going through, but John Roberta did not allow him mu-ii latitude. Several good openings were spoilt by the Aber. forwards getting pulled up for off- side. Half-time was caTed with no score. The se-cond half was all in favour of Aber., and was a repetition of the first half as far as play was concerned. The first incident of note was a failure by Jones, the visitor inside right, to score with an open goal at his mercy. Later. Aber. got down to the visitors' quarters and John Jones ought to have scored, but he shot feebly. A good shot by Join1 Roberts deserved a better fate than going ontside. Aber. continued to have the best of matters, and both Lloyd and Warring- ton failed to take advantage of severa' good openings made by the Aber halves, Tommy Rees being here. there, iii.ti every- where. and he never allowed the Towvll left wing to settle down. Again the play was mostly in the Towyn territory and John Jones shot outside when he could have added to the score. However, the victory of Aber. was short-lived, as Davies was beaten soon after bv Morns who had run through on his own. After Jones had tipped a shot by Green over the bar, Francis, on the visitors' left, looked like scoring the winning goal, but John Roberts saved at the expense of a corner which. was cleared. From now until the end of the game Aber. had the best of matters, but failed to find the net. The fmal result was a draw—one eacb. The game, as a whole, was disappoint- ing owing to the weak exhibition of the ther. inside forwards. The only two for- wards who showed anything like form were Wright, on the left, and Jack Jones, on the extreme right, who improved con- siderably in the second half. The home defence was all that was expected Rees and Roberts being very prominent, as also were Green and Jenkins For Towyn, Pryce Evans played hi1- usual good game, and it must be admitted that they were lucky in sharing the points.

LAMPETER Brewter Sessions.—The general annual licensing meeting was held at th > Town Hall on Friday before Alderman Timotihy Richard, mayor, in the chair; D R Jones and T Gwarnant Williams, Eqrs.—Super- intendent Williams presented his annual report which stated that there were thirty- three fully licensed public houses, one wine, and one wine and spirit licence in the division for a population of 5,460. Twelve licen'-rs were available for seven days and twenty-one for -six days. No proceedings were taken against any of the licensees during the year. Twenty-four wrsons were proceeded against for drunkenness and convicted. Seven occasional licensee wrre granted and four licenses were trano- f erred. 'J1 le police had not served notices j of objection against the renewal of any of the existing licenses. Superintendent Williams added that if the Bench thought it desirable to object to the renewal of any of the licenses he would be pleased to act on their instructions.—All the licenses were re- newed.—The licence of the Royal George was furtfi^r provisionally renewed, pending the settlement of, the question of compen- sation.—The sessions were adjonrned to February 26th.—An occasional iicenee to sell intoxicating liquor at a ploughing match ;n the parish of Llanwenog W38 granted to Mr E Morgan Evaws, Vale of Teify Inn. St. David's College School.—The Lampeter Rugby team is im- proving by leaps and bounds. They did exceedingly well in holiday matches, and this meeting with the School had been looked forward to by th-ir supporters. The match, was played on Wednesday on the school field and resulted in a win for the town team by the narrow margin of eight points to Fix. Both teams were fully represented, and the game keenly con- tested, being a splendid one to watch, as the icsue wav. in doubt up to the last moment. Two were not regular residents in the borougjh which re- duced the rate. of mortality to 15.6 in a thousand. In 1908 three died from phthisis, seven of bronchitis, one oft pneu- monia, one of p eurisy, two of Ir art di- sease, three of cancer, and two of accidents. Three died under one year, two between one and five, one between five and fifteen, one between nft: en and twenty-flv-, eleven between twenty-five and sixtv-five, and twelve over sixty-five. The district had b en free from infectious diseases with the exception of case- of scarlet fev r which broke out m July and which in his opinion were imported. All the children in th" borwigh had been vaccinated. He had not heard o5 any parents in the borough who had applied for exemption certificates. The sanitary condition of the borough was in a satisfactory state. Fifty-five nuisances had been discovered and fifty-on- abat-d. The town was well supplied" with wate" during the whole of the year. The gul'iies won?- regularly cleansed, tQJJ sewers flushed, and the outfalls attended to. The slaughter house bad been periodically in- spectod and found in a s-aii,,fa--toi-y con- dition. The Town Clerk stated that he had re- ceived a letter from Mr John Evans, secre- tary of the Light Railway, in reply to the Council s letter in which they asked what security would be given the Council.—The letter stated that L750 debenture stock and £ 250 ordinary stock would be allotted. The C County Council and local authorities agreed to advance £ 20,000, of which £1,.500 was to be secured by ordinary stock to be divided pro rata among the authorities advancing the money.—The Clerk also stated that he had received a formal notice from the Light Railwav Commissioners enquiring if the Council had any objection to the proposed amendment of the Order. The Clerk ex- plained the proposed amendment and stated that the Council Council woold be em- r-owered to nominate a director.—Mr Wm. A Ceaim.—Owen Jones, Rhiw, Cenarth, claimed from Daniel Evans, Penrherber Inn, Capel Evan, a filly and grey mare which he alleged had been illegally seized bv the execution creditor while distraining on the goods of his brother, Sam Jones, Rhiw, Cenarth.—Mr D T George appeared for claimant and Mr J H EVans appeared for the execution creditor. Owen Jones said he lived at Rhiw with his mother who paid the rent for the house. Witness aVso rented a field of about three acres for j38. His brother also rented fields and paid rent for them. His brother owed money to Mr Henry Jones, auctioneer, Llandyasul. Witness; went to Llanybyther fair on Nov- ember 2nd and bought a, filly for £ 8 5s. Mr E J Bowen was with him then. He paid £1 on account and paid the balance when he took the animal away. He brought the filly home and placed it with other animals at Giandwrog. His brother had a sale of all his stock, which were in the same field as witness's animal. At the sale the filly was put up, but was not sold. Witness withdrew it. After the sale, something was said in the house about the grey pony. His brother had sold everything except the pony and asked witness to buv it. Wit- ness bought the pony and paid for it on the following day.—Cross-examined His brother bought eight horses at Llany- byther. His mother did not claim the pony and had nothing to do with the busi- ness. He had intended buying the pony for tihe fish trade. He paid JB1 on ac- count at Liianybyther fair. He did not go to the fair on his brother's account. He had not paid for the grazing at Glan- dwrog. He had not heard that his brother had paid. The grey pony had been at Rihiw for about a year, and his brother usoed it until he sold it to witness. When he paid for the filly at Llanybyther his brother did not lend the money. He was not in the ring when sale took place. Wit- netss made the last bid for the pony at the sale. The pony was sold on tMe evening of the sale. The fihy was not included in t'he particulars of sale. His brother had eight sucklings- Ten were advertised for pale because the advertisement was printed before the Llanybyther fair. He was at Rhiw when the Bailiff called. Witness did not 81'0 his brothcrr come out with a gun. Ho saw Sergeant Harries who accompanied I the Bailiff. He did not see a gun with his brother at that time. Witness objected to the rr moval of the filly and pony, be- cause they were his.—David George Bowen, Alltrodvn, Trelech, said he went to Llanybyther fair op November 2nd and saw Owen Jones buv a fillv for tB -5s. He paid £1 on ac- count and paid the bahance when the colt was taken away. Witness, was at th fal. and saw the filly being put up. When he went to the fair he took John Jones and David Bowen with him. His brother a'^so went. He bought eight fillies and his broth r oought one. He paid David Davies 2s 6d for the grazing at GJan- dwrog. He rede the grey pony to New- castle Emiyn fair on November 21st but did not bring the filly with him. His brother asked John Davies, P' ngwernisa to take the filly to the fair. Witness did not ask him. The filly did not go to the fair at all, but witness it part of the way. His brother was a fish seller and a good fish .seller too. On December 17th the Bailiff called wit;i S.rgeant Harries. V\ hen a claaff cutter was put up, defendant asked p.aintiff to buy the machine, stating that he would like to exchange his machine for a hcavwr onv Plaintiff suggested that the machine should be seen, and asked it defendant's machine was in £ ood order. Defendant said it was. Slae remembered defendant calling on her husband who rw defendant to bring his machine back. Defendant refused and offered 10s and his machine for the exchange.—Cross-exam- ined: Her husband did not go to defendant at the sale. It was defendant who went to hei- husband.—David Williams, biack- smitin, said defendant sent a machine to him about the beginning of October. The machine required a great deal of repair.— Defendant said he attended a sa!e on October btli. Plaintiff went to witnecs and asked if he would buy a machine, and witness stated that he had one. Plaintiff then said he had bought a machine and asked that they should make a "swap." Plaint-ff^stated that the machine he had would suit defendant better than the one he^ nad. Plaintiff was so anxious that witness should view the machine that wit- ness promised to do so. On the fo.lowing morning he went to see the madhine. He fetched plaintiff's machine, but plaintiff refused to make the exchange — Evan Evans, coal merchant, Llandyssul said he was talking to defendant at Ho eb sale when plaintiff cam- un and asked Mr Jones if ine was in need of a machine. Plaintiff explained that he had bought a machine which he thought would answer defendant's purpose. Witness suggested that defendant should see the machine and nlain, <1 invited defendant- to do so. Plaintiff also stated! fihat if tW machine stinted defendant he cou'id send a cart for it, and that, he wonld .send for -defendant^ machine.—John Williarniq Rhydfach also gave evidence.—His Honour' gare judg- ment for the amount claimed.
